"Will you make a contract with me, then...?"
Face cast in shadow, Bergamot was the spitting image of Gothic Bethany. Her dress may have been blue, her hair may have been brown, and the setting may have been the player's childhood bedroom rather than the ominous trade shop, but the comparison still stood. Well, it stood about as well as a girl who couldn't use her legs.
She opened her hand, allowing LED light to flood the room.
Inside was a 2D icon of a DNA helix. It wasn't a real DNA strand, which would have been microscopic and invisible to the eye. The icon floated in her hand, little more than a rotating trading card with the unmistakeable words:
LEGENDARY DNA: DARKRAI 1/5 "This is DNA for a rare Pokémon called Darkrai. It is said to control nightmares, the dark side of the moon, evil maid cafes, and other goth things." Bergamot closed her hand, dimming the light, then reopened it again. The helix spun there in shades of shadow, waiting for action. "I found it in some hot wings," Bergamot whispered, lowering her voice to a murmur. "Dark hot wings."
...She was actually telling the truth.
"So what do you say, Ruby?"
Her eyes gleamed like stagnant starlight.
"Will you accept your destiny?"

The bedroom was dark, dimly lit by the glow of the DNA from Morgana's hand.
She sat on the floor by the edge of her bed, legs crossed as she stared in awe. In truth, she had no idea what she was really getting herself into. This seemed like such a big deal, something that would shape her experience in UNOVR for the rest of her time here. And yet, she was tempted like nothing had really tempted her before. Her eyes were wide as she stared at the DNA like she was just being handed the answer to so many unknown secrets.
The ability to control nightmares...
Dreams were an avenue of science that was still not fully understood. There was no way to study them, no way to attempt to research what they really meant. But here, in this world, she could not only do that but so much more.
Wait, did she say "Dark Hot Wings?"
Ruby was pulled from her thoughts by those words, looking over at Morgana. Destiny. A complicated word that she had a fairly complex relationship with. What other destiny was there except the one you forged for yourself?
"I accept." Ruby opened her own palm, revealing a similarly floating DNA strand.
LEGENDARY DNA: KYOGRE 1/5
An equal trade. It was the only way to make this fair in her mind. She looked up at Morgana with a wide grin on her face, and a damn near sparkle in her eyes.
"Destiny is ours for the taking, and I see no reason to wait for it."

12 Hours Earlier...Briarbane Settlement was finally finished, and Morgana was making the most of every dark alleyway, parked stagecoach, and blind corner.
She was watching someone. A teenage girl, to be exact.
Had she herself not also been a teenage girl in real life, this behavior could have been classified as 'very creepy' and worthy of sending an automatic harassment report to the devs. Fortunately, her settings fell within acceptable parameters, and so Morgana was allowed to stalk Ruby to her heart's content.
Of course, this was not a long-term venture. Yet.
Morgana had no idea her actions might have triggered real-life consequences, because she had no idea she was dealing with a real-life person. As far as she knew, Ruby was "their sister"-- just another part of the game that came pre-packaged with Mom, free shoes, and that Pokemon-infested back yard. A part of the game that came with a unique rumor.
Darkrai.
The DNA she'd gotten from the stone circle in the Birchwilds seemed to burn a hole in her inventory.
...Anyway, she still had yet to successfully get a peek at Ruby while she was sleeping (note: this is the kind of flaggable behavior we were talking about), but in the interest of collecting more data on Darkrai, Bergamot had decided to follow the NPC into town today on her errands. But the results were mundane. It was like tailing a target in Assassin's Creed waiting for them to be alone so you could assassinate them, only without that last part that actually made it fun.
She suppressed a yawn. Do something spooky, stupid Ruby, she thought crossly, counting to thirty under her breath before following the bespectacled teen into the Gallery of the Endless Memoire. Why are NPCs so boring?

Ruby had to admit, seeing the whole settlement being created from next to nothing originally was super interesting. She had joined just after the Beta, and staying in Briarbane most of the time meant she had a front-row seat to the development of the town. And she had to admit, it had definitely come into its own.
In fact, it was solely because of this desire to see what had changed in the town that she stepped out of the house for the first time in a few days, and began to casually walk about. It was fairly peaceful, all things considered. The dark and gloomy aesthetic originally spooked her a bit, but now it just kind of felt a little bit endearing. It was just an art style, and she was admittedly growing to enjoy it.
She was granted free admission into the Gallery of Endless Memoire, and even Ruby had to admit it was kind of interesting. Was she also within the paintings? She couldn't recall doing anything super interesting worthy of painting, but perhaps she'd find out inside at some point.
Her Munna, Murmur, lazily floated by her head as she walked inside. It mumbled something lazily and Ruby turned to face them. "Yes, I know. You're always sleepy, my dear."
"Muuu-"
Ruby rolled her eyes, affectionately patting the Munna as she walked further into the gallery. Only Munna stayed behind for a second, their lazy eyes were locked onto something in the distance. Or perhaps, someone. Deciding it wasn't worth the energy, nor the concern of their trainer, the lazy Munna just rolled mid-air, slowly floating over towards Ruby as she went to examine some of the pictures.
Ruby was paused in front of a dramatic painting, eyes wide and very distracted by it. Moltres emerging from their egg, surrounded by flames of rainbow and burning spirits by their side. The phoenix born again, an awe-inspiring painting. Just who painted this? Not only was the subject matter incredible, but the actual composition of the artwork was stunning.
"Woah," Ruby whispered under her own breath. "... This happened when I left, didn't it?"

She was expecting to have to fork out a few BYTES to get in, but the receptionist took one look at her and gasped. "Oh! You must have been the model for 'Curse of Medusa'!"
"I am," Bergamot said immediately, then "Wait, what?"
"Over there."
Distracted momentarily from pursuing Ruby, Bergamot followed the woman's line of sight. There was a huge portrait on the wall done in shades of black and white, almost like a colored manga panel. A Galarian Slowking with glowing eyes was focused on a human woman with writhing Ekans for hair, her face contorted in a screaming mask of agony.
I feel like I should be offended, Bergamot thought.
"Ohohoho, yes. Tis I," she said smugly instead, "Now, be hush-hush and don't tell anyone you saw me." She slid an iron ingot across the counter as a bribe and continued into the gallery, high heels clicking quietly on the marble floors.
She hadn't seen Ruby pay either. Did that mean NPCs were in the portraits here as well?
The glasses-wearing teen was standing in front of a familiar-looking scene when Morgana found her again, gazing up at it. It was an incredible depiction, not that Morgana had seen it herself, either. She'd been embroiled in the battle at the greenhouse when the egg had hatched, and during the excitement she'd ended up attacking the Ascended legendary in the air. Not her proudest moment, but not one she'd take back, either.
"Why did you leave?"
There were few places to hide in the open, muse-amplifying chambers of the gallery, so Morgana decided to give up on stealth. She approached, looking the artwork up and down. "I thought I saw you at the party, but we didn't talk. I'm Morgana." Her eyes turned to fix on Ruby. "Then again, you already know that, don't you? We're sisters, after all."

"Why did you leave?"
Ruby nearly leaped out of her shoes. Just who was listening so closely that they heard her whispering to herself? She quickly turned around, only to see Morgana approaching. She remained quiet for a second, silently judging their motives for listening in. The stress on the word sisters stood out to her as if she was supposed to know exactly who they were.
Instead, she just laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her neck. "Actually, uh, no, sorry. Mom has so many kids, it's kind of hard to keep track of everyone who comes and goes at times. Siblings come and go at all times of the day. I swear, Mom doesn't even sleep." Ruby would quietly chuckle once more, politely stretching a hand out to shake theirs.
"I'm Ruby, but... I guess you knew that, sis?" A wry, teasing smile would be returned.
"But, to answer your question," Ruby would begin whether they shook her hand or not. "I admit, I was worried for Mom. If that man who came out of the keg could be corrupted, and it's not just a thing that affects Pokemon, I didn't want it to hurt Mom. She's not a battler. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen her do household chores and yoga with her Pokemon." It was all the truth, really. She just happened to leave out the fact that it all scared her to no end. She certainly wasn't a battler either.
"I heard what happened afterward, though. I've been tempted to see the phoenix at their shrine, but it is an awful long trek on foot. May I ask what brings you to the museum today? I've never been here yet, it seems quite lovely. Are you in a painting too?"

"Hmmm," Bergamot said, disgruntled. Of course she knew Mom had an entire server's worth of player-children and she would never be able to remember them all, but apparently Ruby lacked Mom's 'infinite backstory' generator. Maybe it was supposed to make her more approachable. The type of person teenage girls would want to go shopping and have sleepovers with. The topic of sleep was absurdly close to what Morgana wanted to discover, however, and she seized onto the thought like a lioness seizing a zebra haunch. "You must get quite a bit of sleep," she said (cunningly). "You must get nightmares sometimes. Why, even I get nightmares."She leaned in close, eyes gleaming. "The other night I dreamed I was in a tall, dark forest. It might have been the Timberlands," she added as an afterthought, though the woods in her dream had seemed taller. Older. "There were bookshelves in among the trees, and something about a cat. And I felt like someone was... watching me." Bergamot was quiet for a moment. Her brows drew together, as if she was trying very hard to remember. Then she seemed to shrug it off, returning to her usual, carefree state. She spun in a circle, skirts flaring out around her legs. There. That always made her feel better. "Anyway, you're not missing much," she said, referring to the phoenix at the shrine. "It just sleeps all the time, like animals at the zoo. I wonder if we could go at feeding time?" When did Moltres feed? More importantly, what did it eat? "I'm not a big walker either. I suppose you could charter a carriage from the Trading Post. Or ride a Pokemon."Despite her game-sister's question, she did not point out the weird Medusa painting Hydance had decided to pseudo-legally photoshop her likeness into. Perhaps another player could laugh about it with her, but an NPC might interpret it differently. "Nothing notable," she said quickly, waving it off, then glanced suddenly at Ruby. "Did you say 'too'?"Her eyes lit up. "If you don't know where it is, let's find it! It can be like a scavenger hunt."
