SPIRIT DRAGON RACE "Welcome!" shouts a ghostly announcer, "to the SPIRIT DRAGON RACE!" The Ghost of Races Past is perched in the rotting nest of a grounded ship, and their voice echoes over the dark, misty waters of the race course. The track begins at the shore of the bay and stretches into the fog. Hulking wrecks border the course, and an audience of spirits holding supporting banners crowd the decks.
The waters at the shore bubble and churn as ruined, leaking longboats rise from the depths. They stink of rotten wood and freshly-dredged sand, and the seats are slippery with sediment and disturbed sea creatures.
"Will racers and their Pokemon please board their boats and prepare for the race!" calls the announcer.
Big Bee watched all this with awe. He'd been out swimming alone and triggered a multiplayer event! "Well I can't do this alone," he said, looking alone the shore now filled with sopping wet boats. "What fun is a solo race? I better send out some invites." He retreated to a safe distance so that the quest reset, opened his UI, and fired off a bunch of messages to his friends from the Silent Night event.
Hey it's Big Bee! I found an awesome boat race event in the Drowned Harbor! Come check it out! Was that too many exclamation marks? No. They needed to know that he was excited and that they should be equally excited. It was all about setting the right vibe. He hit send and waited for people to show up.

While at a shrine getting his Pokémon patched up after a disastrous trip through Ostellia's abandoned laboratory, a ping from Big Bee alerted Josh that there was a dragon race coming up in the Drowned Harbor. He couldn't reply to that message fast enough with an enthusiastic one of his own. "On my way once my Pokémon are healed up!" Even if he couldn't participate in the race due to not having an aquatic Pokémon he could ride, it would be fun to watch, and it made him aware of the demand for racing. Maybe he would be able to get a UNOVR racing league established when he became more famous, after all!
Granmarg clopped toward the harbor, Josh seeing he was the first team to respond. It wasn't a Pokémon race, it seemed; it was a boat race. A little disappointing, though Josh wouldn't turn down a contest of speed. "Thanks for the invite, Big Bee!" he waved. While he didn't have the best Pokémon to operate a boat, he would have to make do with what he had. "Team Atsushi, let's do this!" he announced, spontaneously registering his roster: himself as Figurehead, Granmarg the Rower kicking the oars back and forth, and Xira the Helmswoman tethered to the rudder. Once they were instructed, they would climb into their red-and-orange vessel, ready to partake in the contest of speed!

Jade squinted suspiciously at the message. Right. Big Bee. The one from the belated holiday digging event that had somehow gotten her back into casual VR. Didn't help that her coworkers had been blowing her off lately and she had yet to make any other friends.
How had she ended up one of those internet nerds?
Anyway, Jade had a problem, and the problem was that she just couldn't say no.
no way! Hell no!! I heard Ostellia's full of literal aliens, no way am I going Well, she'd say it plenty, but it wouldn't stick.
The ninja woman appeared on the Drowned Harbor pier, her first step into the area of Ostellia since it'd opened up last fall. "Looks different than the demo," she observed, looking around herself. The sneak peek from UNOVRCon had shown off this area, but there had been a hell of a lot more wild Pokémon and a hell of a lot less badass dragon boats.
They were really cool, honestly. Even if it reminded her a bit too much of Chinese New Year. Could use a red envelope or two to help pay bills this month. Why did kids get all the good stuff?
"Don't start," she warned Big Bee as she approached the man on the dock, "Got curious, that's all. One alien and I'm outta here."
Clambering awkwardly into one of the boats, completely forgetting she had literal bug wings, Jade reached in her pockets and released a trio of Pokémon. Novak the Lokix, the speedy helmsman. Pete the Floragato to row the boat. And Roger the Combusken, currently asleep, the perfect figurehead.
And Jade would be sitting on her happy ass keeping a lookout for goddamn aliens.

#s://i~imgur~com/PC2oujK~jpg Oh, hell yeah! I'm so there!
Just when Jian was wondering whether or not a game as big as UNOVR would have seasonal quests, there it was. Though maybe it was only a coincidence? It did look a lot more foggy and ghostly for it to truly be a 'Chinese New Year' event. Maybe Hungry Ghost Festival would be more like it, he thought with an uneasy chuckle.
He was surprised to be pinged about this event though, he's barely spoken to that Big Bee guy back during the Silent Night event, but hey, he wasn't complaining. Though he did kind of replied without thinking about the pokemon he had on him at the moment though.
"I guess I've forgotten how much water is involved in a boat race." The man laughed sheepishly, approaching Big Bee and Jade Jager by the harbor as his litten glared daggers at him. His purrloin on the other hand, seemed surprisingly raring to go.
"I wanna sit in front and be the figurehead!! I'll be SO GOOD at motivation!!" Her tiny paws bapping at Jian's leg.
"You are absolutely insane, if you think I'm getting in that thing. It's still wet!!" The litten snapped as he took a couple steps back.
Jian feels like he's babysitting all of a sudden.
"Well, you don't have to sit on the chair if you don't want to, I think. Though it'll be a little hard for you to control the rudder too. You don't exactly have hands." yet. Jian thought as he finished his sentence.

#s://i~imgur~com/hvQJMUd~jpg It beat studying for her Equity and Trusts exam anyway, even if Vivi had no idea where this 'Drowned Harbour' was. She'd gotten the chance to explore precious little, given how she started the game during a time when a lot was happening in real life: aforementioned exams, calls back home due to impending holidays (read: CNY), three whole photoshoots she was booked in for, and a recent row she'd gotten into with her neighbour in the flat opposite. Vivi was pretty damn sure that being a music student didn't give you the right to practice a trombone in a building with thin walls and even thinner patience. In fact, being a music student meant he'd have access to practice rooms, no? Twat.
Also, being no-strings-attached invited to something? The feeling was so incredibly novel that Vivi had actually guffawed for five seconds before heavily debating what people usually said in invitation reply texts for six minutes.
When she entered the game and navigated to where the event quest - as it was apparently - was pinging, any preconceptions of what a 'Pokémon-themed boat race' was were promptly struck from her mind. Yes, it was probably some kind of tribute to a dragon boat race but with extra ghosts and murk, but she'd expected at least some colour in the form of banners or the like. The smell, too, did not compel her; neither did the structurally unsound boats. The quest instructions pop-up made her feel even less enthused: it looked like she'd be needing at least three bodies, and last time she checked, she just had two.
Time to scavenge, even if it did hurt her pride a bit. Goddamn team sports.
Emery saw a blond man she did not know looking already ready to rumble and spotted the insectoid ninja woman from the digging event some time prior. What was her name again? She scuttled up to the woman's boat (if the woman had been on the ground still, Emery would've tackled her) and stood there in the sand for a good bit trying to grasp the name from her memory. The problem was that it was stored in the 'Fake Names (lol)' file, which took a bit to access given its, well, laughable nature.
"Jade Jager ! Fancy seeing you here, you fake dragonfly, you," said Emery finally, wide-eyed, with a snap of her fingers. She said her entire name slowly, as if chewing around a foreign word. "Didn't think I'd be seeing you again so soon, if at all, but I'm well glad I have. Looks like you're full up; are we supposed to man our own boats here?"
Big Bee also caught her attention at the same time Jian did and so she trotted towards the boat that seemed to be less occupied. On the way, to Jian, she gave Bee a cheery wink and cheeky air-kiss, just to mirror her message. She'd seen this before on campus and if Bee was the kind of person who sent invites every which way, surely he'd be the type to take that in stride. If not, well, too bad for him.
"兄弟. 兄弟! Help me in!" Emery lifted her leg and snagged it on the lip of the boat, which swayed to her side. "I thought it would be everyone versus some ghosts or whatever, but it looks like a free for all here, and as much as I hate to admit it, I'm pretty poorly for this. 恭喜发财, by the way" - she opened her palms - "so where's my 红报?"
Once on the boat, she unballed Idol, who barreled into her chest for a hug, and then sat at the helm, not even asking Jian or his animals whether that was alright or not.
"You've already met Yanyan, Idol. Who's this other cat?"
"A new friend, that's who!" Idol did a loop-de-loop in the air and came down to paw at Yanyan's head, then fled to swim in the air around the other, slimmer-looking cat. "What tall eyes you have, haha! And such purple fur! If I asked you to, would you dance with me? I'm Idol, who are you? Are we working together? Pleased to meet you!"
He let out a happy bray. Emery supposed that being this close to the water, which they'd never been before, was putting him in high spirits.

Oh a race? Might check it out. The notification message flashed across the top of her UI along with the message; Big Bee HAS INVITED YOU TO A RACE! DO YOU ACCEPT? Lucille's finger hovered over the yes button for a few moments, hesitant. She had interacted with Big Bee a little here and there, which honestly was a lot for someone used to being so socially inept and solitary. The thought of actually building friendships in UNOVR both excited and terrified her greatly. But perhaps she just needed to take the leap and dive into the complicated world of personal relationships.
Breathing out slowly to calm the building knot in her stomach, she finally clicked the yes to accept the invitation. Ostellia had been unexplored territory for her so far, work had kept her too busy to do much of anything after the Thunderfall Raid and honestly, Lucille felt a tad bit under prepared for such exploration currently, especially in the TGHP department. She would have to fix that at some point, but right now, she had a race to attend.
Upon arriving to the Drowned Harbor, Lucille was greeted by the sight of many Viking-esque Dragon boats, though the helms were all shaped like various different Pokémon heads, ranging from Gyarados to Empoleon and more, each baring unique design patterns and colored woods. Various trainers selecting their teams for the upcoming competition. The announcers call loud and echoing across a set of loudspeakers, hurrying along sign-ups and late comers. Tucking the yellow and black striped legendary egg under her arm as she approached one of the barnacle and sediment covered longboats, blinking as she found a rather questionable Magikarp flopping about helplessly against the deck of the vessel, furrowing her eyebrows, she set the egg down leaning against one of the seated sections before moving to soothe the aquatic creature enough to calm its erratic movements then scoop the poor thing up and return it to the oceans it came from.
Once that was over with, Lucille scooped three Pokéballs from her belt, releasing her teammates for the race, Aymr the Helmsman, Byleth the Rower and Edelgard the Figurehead.
Aymr the Hisuian Typhlosion shook himself off, a somewhat sour expression on his face as he side-eyed his trainer and huffed, obviously not enjoying his time cooped up within his Pokéball when he preferred to be out and about alongside his trainer, before making his way to the back of the boat to his designated position. Grasping a hold of the rudder and giving it a few test movements, the movement stiff and uncoordinated, the wood feeling slimy and almost like the slightest touch would make it disintegrate in his grasp yet somehow started to loosen up from its stiffened state. With a nod, Aymr seemed satisfied, for now.
Byleth the Dragapult took her position in the rowers section of the boat, curling her noodly-hand arm around the oar and floating above the disgustingly slimy seating, her ghostly tail curling around the egg resting against the wooden benches footing area. Wide amber irises glancing at the electric-yellow surface of the oval-shaped object, shoulders slumping in a slightly disheartened manner, the egg was no further along to the point of hatching quite yet. Byleth, bless her maternal nature, wanted to meet the bird inside eventually.
Edelgard the Litten's eyes widened like dish plates as she scrambled along Lucille's form, claws digging into fabric and skin alike as she finally came to rest upon the kindler's head, causing the woman to wince and grit her teeth as the scratches began to sting. Hissing and fur standing on end ❝Water! We're surrounded by Water! Get me out of heeeerrreee! I demand it!❞ Edelgard bellowed, her tail whipping about in agitated manner. Sighing, Lucille reached up to try and peel the fiery feline from her head only to have the Litten's claws digging into her scalp, causing the kindler to yelp ❝Edelgard, will you calm down! You're not going to fall in the water. We'll be keeping an eye on you the entire time, okay? You just have to cheer Aymr and Byleth on. That's all you have to do.❞ There were a few moments of reluctant grumbles before the Litten sheathed her claws again ❝Ugh... fine, but you better keep to your word, got it?❞ Finally Lucille peeled the fire-type from her head, making a mental note to place bandaids on any scratches she could find later. Moving to the front of the boat and placing the reluctant feline down against the slimy, moss and barnacle covered wooden surface at the front of the barely sea-worthy vessel.

sounds cool, omw! just lemme figure out how to get to the harbor first! It was a quiet day in Felicity's apartment - a lack of shifts (most likely to train any new hires) left her entire week free to do whatever she wished. She could go on a walk, she could go to one of the cafes - she could do anything she wanted.
And yet, here she was, staring at the beige ceiling, feeling almost bored. She could do so many things, and yet all she wanted to do was get back to work.
But then, a message arrived - prompting a tilt of the head. Big Bee...? Oh! Big Bee! From that event! She read it over.
A boat race...? At a...Drowned Harbour? Now that sounded cool!
Typing up a response, Felicity would smile to herself, before exhaling. Now how to get to this...Drowned Harbour?
An hour later, Cypress would be walking over to the pier, taking note of the once proud vessels now shells of their former glory. If she spotted Big Bee, she would give a cheerful wave, smiling. "Sorry for the wait! Had to figure out where I was going..."
Would she most likely need to figure out a means of transportation? Probably. But right now, it's Boat Time.
Preparing to clamber into one of the many Pokemon-themed boats, a pop-up would catch her attention.
Please select Three (3) Pokemon, or yourself, to participate in this event!
Three Pokemon hmm...? Well, luckily for this event!
Soon, after the Pokemon were sent out (and explanations were had), Cypress had selected her roster - with input, of course.
Huck requested that he be on the Rower position and Spearmint all but cheered when the Figurehead position was mentioned. Paprika, on the other hand...
Paprika was staring into the ocean, before shuddering slightly. A beat passed before the reason hit her as to the reaction.
Houndour is part Fire-type. Fire and something like a boat race over an ocean...That wouldn't mix well.
So, with a sigh, Cypress would approach the Dark Pokemon, before lightly patting him on the head. Silence passed.
<"Madame, are you sure this race is...safe?"> "I'm sure it will be fine...but you don't have to participate if you don't want to - I can take the final position, if you need." A moment of silence before a nod from the canine,. <"...if you could do so? I give my thanks.">, he would bark, as Cypress returned him to the Pokeball, before clambering into the boat with the rest of the team.
Spearmint would Ingrain herself to keep herself steady in the slightly damp seat, while Huck would appear quite comfortable in the rowers section, front paws around the rowers and preparing to push with all he had.
Cypress meanwhile, had positioned herself at the helm, testing the rudder and taking in the salty sea air.

By an unfortunate coincidence, Hekate had already been in the area when the message was sent. As part of her gradual exploration of UNOVR, she'd managed to wander her way over to the Drowned Harbour, and lost herself in staring out over it's expansive waters. Despite living on an island, she'd not been to a beach or bay in... a long time. It was peaceful, beautiful, and she'd almost fallen in whan Bee's message made her jump out of her skin.
She'd read the message, and then quickly closed and ignored it. There was NO way she was gonna show up for something like that, right? Another big social event, invited by someone she hardly knew, involving a bunch of boating and racing when she'd barely done either in her life? No chance. Hekate had simply sat back down on the pier she was on, and refused to move. ...some time later, at the site of the race, there's a flash of orange moving quickly towards the bay. On closer inspection, it looks to be... a small, Phantom Torchic? Oh, and behind it, there's a person chasing - someone wearing dark clothes, mostly purples, with bright white hair- oh, it's Hekate, gasping for breath, huh. Looks like Lil Guy had other plans, plans that went strongly against Hekate's desire to have nothing to do with all this.
Swift as his little feet can carry him, Lil Guy races down to the ships, hops onto an empty one, and proudly stands at it's front. He looks around at the other competitors, before puffing himself up confidently. He is intent on winning this race. Hekate stumbles onto the boat behind him a short while after, giving a nervous wave to the other competitors. "H-hhhh.... heeeeeey, e-e-everyone... let's... goooooooo..."
A window opens in her UI, prompting her to select her team. It looks like Lil Guy has already self-selected as Figurehead, but the remaining two slots cause Hekate to gulp. "Uhhh... I, uh, I don't-" She can probably take the Helmsman role, right? But that still leaves... "I, well, don't h-have... enough Pokémon, I think...?" Is she already disqualified?? She just got here!
Wait. Is she already out of this? She perks up all of a sudden. "G-guess I, uh, can't do this! Hah- s-such a shame! Too- too bad!" Lil Guy shoots her a dirty look.

Bee greeted his friends with waves, handshakes, fist-bumps, and even a hug or two.
"Great to see you Josh Devlin!" he said, admiring the man's response time and sheer enthusiasm. "Grab a boat, any boat. You've got your pick of the litter!"
"Jade Jager! Aliens? Oh I wouldn't worry, I'm pretty sure there won't be any here." He tucked away his Pokeball containing Buzzwole. He didn't want to risk a player leaving over something so little. "In fact I'm sure that we won't see any out here today. Have fun!"
"Can't have a boat race without water!" he said, laughing together with Jian. "Cute cats! Are they good around water?" he asked, before wincing at the Litten's obvious displeasure. "Well, good luck!"
Bee caught Emery V.'s wink and kiss and returned it with a beaming grin and a huge, sweeping wave. "Good luck in the race!" he called out.
He spotted Lucille hurrying over to a boat, a legendary egg under her arm. "Have a good race Lucille!" he shouted, still entangled in trying to welcome everyone to the race. "And be careful with the egg! Fresh eggs sink!" That was just good advice in general.
"Oh don't worry, still plenty of time," Bee said in reply to Cypress' worries about being late. "These events don't usually start until everyone is here and settled. One time there was a huge countdown clock, but here it seems to be more the whim of the announcer. And look!" he pointed down the beach to where there were still boats unfilled. "Still plenty of boats left. Take your pick!"
As Bee was looking around for the last few latecomers he spotted a flash of orange and white. "Hekate!" he called, jogging over to intercept her at an empty ship. "It looks mighty lonely in there with just the two of you. I've got a third for you right here!" he said, sending out his Poliwag. "This is Connie! Her full name is 'Conan the Barbarian (1982)' but I only call her that when she's late to dinner!" Bee laughed, and Connie jumped from one foot to the other, overjoyed to be making new friends.
"Hey you two!!!" Connie said to Hekate and Little Guy, the words sounding rounded by her tiny mouth. "Nice to meet you both!!!" She bounced into the boat, shuffling about until she was seated and ready for the race.
With only two latecomers still on the way, Bee finally had a chance to pick his team. He needed someone fast at the helm. Reaction speed was key. "Orange, can you handle steering?"
His Blaziken appeared, arms crossed and eyes already rolling. "Yeah. I should be fine with that. Anything else you need help with? Maybe tying your shoes? Or wait you've got sandals on again."
"There's nothing wrong with sandals! And you don't even have any shoes!" He frowned, then relaxed. "You're on helm then. Over there at the back. Thanks Orange!"
Next up is a powerful rower. Someone able to handle multiple oars, and maybe even paddling. "What's better than strong forearms?" he said to nobody in particular, "four, strong arms!" Cofagrigus emerged in a gleam of gold. The effects of Bee's Basilisk subclass were inperceptible on the creature, as his body had already been entirely stone and gold (aside from the quarter of ghostly appendages. "You're in the middle, The Mummy!"
The Mummy grinned and lifted itself into the boat, settling in the middle and reaching outwards with its arms like some massive stick insect.
And that just leaves the mascot. Inspirational. Beautiful. Motivational. Rian's drumming? No. Jam's adorable face? No, he doesn't like boats. And then in a flash of inspiration he called on the perfect Pokemon: Gyarados. Bergamot the Gyarados roared onto the scene. She coiled around the front half of the boat, anchoring her torso as she lifted her massive head out of the water. Her neck arched towards the unknown mists, mouth open in anticipation.
"Yeah! That's perfect! Now it's a real dragon boat!" Big Bee climbed into the boat between The Mummy and Orange. The beautiful craft was still sopping wet, with a Pyukumuku and half a school of Wishiwashi splashed about in the bottom. "Let me help you outta there," Bee said, picking up the Pyukumuku and releasing it into the bay.

#s://i.imgur.com/3jB6FnR.jpeg "Your 大哥's not even married yet and you're asking for a red packet! How old do you think I am, huh?!" Jian exclaimed as if offended. Still, he held onto the sides of the boat to keep it steady as Emery climbed in, making a face at the wet, mossy feel of a boat that's spent way too long underwater.
"Oh yeah, that's-"
"I'm Taro!! Nice to meet ya, new friend!!" The Purrloin replied enthusiastically and very much unlike a cat. She reached up a tiny paw to Idol for what looks to be a paw-fin high-five. "And I don't know about dancing, but I hope to be a model one day. I'd s(l)ay I already got the moves for it." With that said, Taro stood up on her two hind legs and struck a pose, but quickly grasped at the bow of the boat as it rocked unsteadily.
Yanyan on the other hand, unhappily rubbed the area where Idol pawed him on the head."Can I get out of here, please. At least let me take a nap."
"Alright, alright, get outta here ya grump," Jian rolled his eyes with a sigh before retrieving the litten back into his pokeball. "Anyway, the initial plan was for me to row and Taro to be the figurehead, but if Idol wants to be the motivational speaker, well, maybe you two could rock, paper scissors for it. Hope you're good at QTE games, 小妹, because it feels like that's what the helmsman is supposed to be for."
