It was the dead of night, and Bergamot Gristleborg was posed outside Mom's House in the most suspicious possible way. Back flat against the siding, check. Half-concealed behind a bush, check (being completely concealed meant giving up potential photo ops. Just in case anyone was catching this epic heist on camera.) Holding a crowbar, check. Morgana had forged the crowbar earlier that spring at the Post-Raid Barbecue when she'd been trying to get orioncayge to mess up his dancing minigame. Now, she planned to use it for evil. Mom would be so disappointed— but Mom wasn't here. Tuesday was. She'd gotten the idea to invite Tuesday when she'd checked the date and time of her planned heist, which was on a Tuesday. Oh yes, this was a completely premeditated breaking-and-entering plot. She'd been planning it ever since she'd heard on the Rumor Mill that the Ruby NPC in Mom's spare room could be used to fight Darkrai in the Dream World. Who would turn down the chance to fight Darkrai?! "Here, put this on," Bergamot said, handing Tuesday a black ski mask. "It's a collectable hat." Bergamot did not clarify how she'd won this collectible hat. She also made no attempt to put on a ski mask of her own. She put her ear against the side of the house, listening for guards. "Ivory. Pantone 1109-07," she said grimly. "...Let's move out."Barefoot, like all wayward children who'd failed to pick up their Running Shoes, Bergamot tiptoed up to the gate enclosing the back yard. At the sight of the simple picket fence, her eyes lit up. Our first obstacle! She'd been hoping for a moat full of Feraligatrs, but perhaps that was a bit much to ask from a Tutorial Setting. "Give me a boost," she whispered to Tuesday, eyes gleaming with assurance. "Not even a force field? Child's play. Like taking candy from a Mime Jr."

Heist movies have always been Mars’ favourite kind. They just have it all, you know? Action, suspense, drama, an overly elaborate plan that’s bound to go wrong in some way at one point or another, and of course, the sickest special effects.
Cue a Cryogonal’s HAZE.
Probably unnecessary considering that this is mere breaking-and-entering in a video game and no actual heist, but you know, at least Tuesday looks fucking cool when coming out of the dark mist. Her mismatched eyes glimmer with confidence under the moonlight, her cat ears point up to the skies, her blonde hair is neatly tied up, and it’s from head to toe that she’s clad in black… or, well, rather from head to ankles – no shoes to be found.
”Morgana, I’m not wearing a ski mask.” And just like that, the illusion is broken. Still, nothing in this virtual world seems capable of shaking Tuesday’s confidence, and it’s with a smirk that she attempts to flick her hair back… only to end up flicking air because her hair is tied. Whoops. No worries, she’s still cool, right? ”The cameras should capture me in all of my glory.” Obviously, that’s what all this is really about, right?
Despite her own words, she takes the “collectable hat” from Bergamot Gristleborg, because you know, free stuff.
”Psshhh… No, no… Jumping over the fence would be way cooler. Like this, look.”
She places a gloved hand on the fence, fully intending to jump over it. It would work too, except for one minor yet crucial miscalculation: Mars had forgotten that Tuesday is much shorter than what he’s used to, and so even though IRL something like this would be no issue for him, Tuesday ends up tripping over the fence and falling face-first in Mom’s backyard.
The fence shakes, and with a creaking sound, the gate that had been only a couple of metres away opens. It had been unlocked.

Creeeeeak.Morgana flounced through the open gate, dropping to one knee at the fallen Tuesday's side. "Nice work," she whispered unironically. The grass was damp and dewy beneath her hands and she quickly dismissed the idea of stealth-army-crawling through it to the back porch. "Good thinking with that Haze. No lasers, I see..." The mist from Cryogonal would have lit them all up if any had existed, but Morgana was still not convinced. She must have some kind of security. At least a guard dog. <Woof?>"Silence," Bergamot breathed, pushing away the cold nose currently touching her elbow. "We need a— hold on." She stopped abruptly, turning her head to see a Lillipup standing next to the two of them, wagging its tail. "This lawn is... no. It can't be. It's almost like... That would mean...No!"Tall Grass, in Mom's backyard?! ...Actually, it made sense. What better place to do a Catching Tutorial for a beginning trainer? "This is all Dad's fault for not being around to mow it," Bergamot hissed under her breath. "Curse him for being perpetually absent!" Supposedly hers was in a prisoner of war camp, but who cared about that when she'd just realized a sea of low-level spawns was between them and the back door? With the Haze still covering the ground, it was difficult to see how many pairs of bulging Patrat eyes and adorable terrier puppies were truly concealed in wait. "It seems I must use my secret weapon," she said, pulling up her inventory and selecting the item she needed. "...a grenade!"Just kidding. "A Mini_Codie," she said, letting the tiny Porygon pet pixilate into existence. "This won't trigger any spawns, since it's not a real Pokemon. Go investigate and find a safe path!" she ordered it, shooing the miniature AI away. The Mini_Codie floated into the Haze, leaving square, pixel-shaped holes behind itself like a trail of bread crumbs. Bergamot got to her feet, beckoning Tuesday and following close behind. The back porch had never seemed so far away.

Bergamot Gristleborg is right, she had done a nice job!
Obviously this had all been part of the plan; every step being completely intentional. Yep! See, it had been necessary for Tuesday to trip over the fence, fall, and cause a ruckus, because—...
"Ah!...Ehem... I mean..." The sudden appearance of the Lillipup startles her, but of course UNOVR's best Alchemist is quick in her recovery. Clearing her throat, Tuesday stands, dirt being brushed off her clothes as if it were nothing at all. "I see my plan to flush out any potential threads worked as intended. Good thinking with your Mini_Codie, Bergamot."
All according to plan.
Now, what was the next part of the plan?
Right... Getting through the tall grass to reach the back porch of MOM'S HOUSE.
"Ancile." Tuesday must have suddenly decided that silence is of utmost importance, because she calls out to the Cryogonal with the most quiet of whispers.
<'YES, MY LIEGE?'> In response, Ancile does not whisper.
"Shhhhhhh. Pass me your chain and follow Morgana's little pet thing." As Tuesday whispers, the Cryogonal does, and one end of its frozen chain is gentle and carefully placed in his master's gloved hands. Tuesday holds it, and so, they go, led by a Mini_Codie which the sentient snowflake dutifully follows.
With this not-at-all-needlessly-elaborate plan, they reach the door in no time, but then comes their next obstacle:
"Do you think it'll be locked?" Tuesday asks Morgana. Logic dictates that yes, but then again, UNOVR is a game, and at this point in time, their nameless settlement is barely more than a few tents.

Never one to be cautious (even in a breaking-and-entering type situation that typically required caution), Bergamot reached out to test the doorknob. "It's not locked."MINI_CODIE beeped in assent, zooming forward and taking a single BYTE out of the hinge. There was a low creeeak! THUD as the screen door suddenly sagged. "Sss! No!" Morgana quickly put the PokePet back in her inventory, but it was too late. The porch light came on. "Bergamot Gristleborg, is that you?" How did Mom know? "No," Bergamot said, pitching her voice higher in a vague, screechy imitation of the catgirl's soprano. "It's just Tuesday!" Time to throw her bait under the bus. While Mom was busy serving giant smoothies to Tuesday, Bergamot would finish infiltrating-- "Oh Bergamot Gristleborg, you're always such a prankster. Come inside where it's warm! And bring Tuesday with you."Honestly, they should have known Mom was up at all hours of the night. Players played at all hours of the day, after all, and one couldn't risk missing a starting tutorial just because the relevant NPC was asleep for "realistic reasons." ...Ten minutes later, they were seated at the dining room table. Bergamot wasn't sure how they'd gone from crawling through the grass to drinking hot cocoa at midnight with their game-mother, but they were here now. Curse Mom's supernatural child-sense! Maybe she was the one hiding Darkrai. "Your shoes are both so muddy! Where have you been?" Mom asked in dismay, folding up her tea towel and bustling away to fetch them some new boxes of Running Shoes. "Tuesday, you know what I always told your father when he came home late with muddy feet, right?"Morgana sipped her cocoa, aware they had to finish this story requirement of the tutorial before they could progress. Wait, when did they start doing a tutorial? This was supposed to be a sting operation!

"Morgana." Tuesday whispers in the way people whisper when they actually want to yell, all but hissing the budding villainess' name.
However, her reproach comes too late.
Like a parent sitting at the living room couch in the darkness, waiting for the rebellious misbehaved child to return home from the party they had snuck out to attend, Mom finds them. Except that in this case there is no real scolding or punishment (quite unrealistic, in Tuesday's experience). Instead, what they get is... an invitation to come in and hot cocoa?!
Definitely unrealistic.
However, who is Tuesday to say no to hot cocoa? It isn't exactly keto-friendly, but what Mars refuses to enjoy in real life, Tuesday is allowed to enjoy in game with no repercussions whatsoever. That is the beauty of deep dive VR. Forget about Darkrai, maybe the menú is the real appeal of Mom's House.
Or, maybe it's the tutorial rewards...
Mom runs off to get them new RUNNING SHOES, and there, at the top right of her line of sight, Tuesday sees the magic words:
TUTORIAL 001 - PUMPED-UP KICKS
Ah, of course.
What did mom always tell dad about muddy feet? It feels like a test, a quiz, like she'll fail if she doesn't give the right answer—...
"Uhmm... That just because mud is a great skin treatment, often recommended by dermatologists, he shouldn't go around jumping in every puddle he sees?"
"Exactly!"
Oh.
If Tuesday remembers the story correctly, her own father had supposedly fallen victim to a Firecracker Red Jeep Wrangler. Maybe his fondness for mud had something to do with that.
Anyway! Mom offers her a box and the sneakers within it are black. Nice. Wait, is that logo a... leaping Persian?
"Ah, he never learned. I guess the Applin really never falls far from the tree, no? Put these on. You too Bergamot Gristleborg. Really, you know what happens to children who go around leaving muddy footprints everywhere!"
What does happens to children who go around leaving muddy footprints everywhere?
It sounds like some sort of cautionary fairy tale, but whatever Morgana's answer is, Tuesday barely listens — being much more preoccupied with her hot cocoa and her new prize. She loves presents.

This was the end of her quest to sneak a peek at sleeping Ruby, Bergamot realized forlornly as she sat at Mom's dining table, sipping hot cocoa. Considering how vigilant the motherly NPC was, with a supernatural sense for which child was visiting at any given time, it was unlikely she would ever be able to fight Darkrai in her teenage daughter's dreams. Not without getting rid of Mom first. And Morgana might be a villain, but she wasn't that evil. The Quest-- if there was one, and it wasn't just a rumor someone had started-- was difficult for a reason. Bergamot was up for the challenge, but this experience had proven to her she needed to change up her tactics. I'll have to revise my strategy. She absentmindedly took the shoes Mom handed her, then did a double-take when she saw what they were. "High heeled Running Shoes? Mother, I didn't know these existed," Bergamot said, immediately kicking off her shit-tier stilettos and putting these on instead. She stood up, doing a little twirl. "Do they look fabulous? Frightening?"She un-ironically loved them. Belatedly, she remembered Mom had asked her a question. What happens to children who run around leaving muddy footprints everywhere? "The Great Darkness takes them, doesn't it?" Bergamot asked innocently. ... When they'd both finished their hot cocoa and chatted some more, Mom sent the two of them on their way, making them promise to come back and show her any new Pokemon they caught on her journey. Oh I'll be back, thought Morgana, glancing back over her shoulder at the house. After a little... reconnaissance. Perhaps she'd even invite Tuesday again. If it was on a Tuesday, of course.
