“This isn’t your house either,” he responds with a smile, yet he lets Verai snatch the album from his hands, amused by how the man is so intent on respecting an NPC’s things. For someone who tried to shatter his ribs, Verai was a goody two-shoes.
The smile drops when Verai mentions her wanting to see him. “If it’s actually required, she can wait. She’ll probably wait for days.” He doesn’t see a deadline by the floating text. It’s very plausible he could just leave her there, standing in the kitchen until the sun sets. Until the sun burns out.
“And I don’t.” He chuckles. “Both my folks are alive and well. This quest is just stupid.” And clearly meant for the children who had yet to leave home.
“Why do you care?” He asks, because Verai is an endlessly entertaining curiosity to him, “You know she’s not real. Does she remind you of your mother or something?”
His eyes narrow, just a bit. “Do you even—”
The jingling entrance of Litten and her subsequent crash into his legs cut him off before he finishes. And right behind her, running and running, is the cat he was given. Sprigatito gives a quick <Hiya!> to the trainers, before bumping his head against Litten and trying to steal the pretty-sounding door toy.

Every word Kazuki said was getting on his last nerve. Does she remind you of your mother or something?
Not his, but Bria's. A woman on her own who was trying to do her best with what she'd been handed in life, and made a difficult decision to try and get her daughter a better life. A woman who reminded him that people were, by and large, inherently good. That the terrible people were outliers. Most people didn't derive pleasure at the pain and suffering of others around them, least of all those they raised.
In lieu of answer, he simply grabbed Kazuki by the jaw-
Clearly reluctant, he let go, glaring at him a moment before turning to return to the kitchen.
Litten batted at the jingle, and Sprigatito when he came by- and let out a howl like she was being slaughtered when he tried to take the toy. <Heyyy no! I found it! It's mine!> She yowled, sinking her teeth into one of the ribbons, and trying to pull it away with a little, tiny growl.

Something he said landed. He’s not sure which, but it earns him a tight grip around his jaw, fingers digging into bone, and despite being locked out of talking, Kazuki grins.
Whatever Verai was about to hit him with, whether words or a fist, is stopped by the kitten antics.
He watches the man go, still snickering to himself as he rubs his jaw. 'Fucker's got a grip.' The kittens were busy among themselves, so he follows his metaphorical leash and stalks after Verai, allowing Mom to greet him as he enters the kitchen.
Sprigatito tenses at Litten’s yowling, his small fangs clenching the end of the jingling toy harder. When Litten tugs at it, he reflexively digs his feet into the floor, confusion painting his face. <But the nice lady said to share!> He whines, letting go of the toy entirely. <Ah, Litten!> He gasps.
In the other room, Mom’s dialogue has commenced. “He joins us at last,” the woman teases, gesturing for both men to join her at the table. “Come, both of you, sit! You can’t have a journey without a good meal.”
The table is set with a veritable feast, although Kazuki’s eyes glance over them derisively. They aren’t meals sufficient for his training and they don’t resemble the dishes of his childhood. He sits without an appetite.
Mom notices this. “Now, I know I don’t cook as well as your mother—” Kazuki raises his brows as her smile tightens “—but you must eat. She would be heartbroken if she knew you’re not eating well.”
He picks up one of the sandwiches. Chicken and parmesan, by the look and smell of it, and piping hot. “What do you know of my mom?”
Mom’s smile wavers. She places her hands on the table, one over the other. “She was my neighbor and my friend, Kazuki. You know this. A wonderful woman—so strong. A natural fighter. I couldn’t believe it when I heard how she—” she wrings her hands “—how she died out in the wilds.”
Kazuki makes no attempt to hide his disbelief; his face cracks into a smile, looking at her like she just made a joke. Mom is too preoccupied with her story and her hands to notice.
“But your father is a good man. It can’t be easy, raising a child alone and juggling his research. Please don’t resent him for not being around more.”
When she raises her eyes, Kazuki’s smile has flattened, his brows furrowed at her. “The other children may not have treated you well, but believe me, you will find kind people. A life of crime isn’t the path you’re meant to take, and I’m sure this pokemon journey will teach you that.”
She reaches for him, holding the one hand he has on the table with both of hers in an outpour of compassion. “I wish only good things for your future.”
Marinara sauce drips onto the floor in a red puddle; the sandwich in his hands has been crushed in his fist. He stares as if preparing to chuck it at her.

Litten fell backwards when Sprigatito let got of the toy, landing with a soft squeak. <Oof! I- I thought we were playing!> She accused. Someone had the toy and someone else tried to take it! So they could chase each other! That was the basics of play! She wiggled it again... but dropped it, as it wasn't very fun as a toy anymore. <It's okay- We can find something else!> There were lots of things to play with in houses like these, after all.
She scrambled free of the bedroom, sniffing at the air, and then running into a different room, all cool tile and fluffy things. She hopped up onto the plush toilet seat cover, kneading at it a moment before climbing up onto the sink. There wasn't much here... just a soap bottle she eased into the sink. But when she turned around, oh- oh there it was. The big, tall shower curtain. Asking to be climbed. <Sprigatito! Look!!!!> She cried, eyes starry. Who knew what was up there, or behind that? She would, soon enough.
Litten hunkered down, butt wiggling, and she launched herself- landing on the ground in front of the bath. Well, no matter!! She threw herself at the wall again, hooking claws into the fabric. <C'mon! C'mon!> Slowly, she tried making her way upwards- until there was a weird noise.
And the curtain rod collapsed. Litten shrieked, running, wildly out of the room, smacking into the hallway wall, and finally dislodging the shower curtain. The horror finally over, she ran further down the hallway- Oh, and there was Purrai! And Sprigatito's person! And the nice lady with the snacks!
Verai had primarily remained both quiet and seated as Mom spoke. Given what she'd said to him, there was no correlation between real life, and what Mom said to them. So- especially when given his amusement- it wasn't likely her story had affected him. But... the kindness had. Verai understood. After years oof cruelty, the idea that there was still kindness out there was... impossible to fathom.
He moved, grabbing hold of Kazuki's hand, despite the marinara getting everywhere. "Kazuki..." He said, almost a warning.

He doesn’t know how she managed to enrage him. It was amusing at first, how the NPC generated an entirely new backstory for him. It made him wonder what factored into it, if it was wholly up to chance, or if they applied something from real life. He leaned on the former considering its propensity for angst.
But there was a point when the cuteness wore off. By the time she held his hand as if he were some misunderstood child, his body had already begun to move.
A grip stops him.
It snaps him out of it. The marinara dribbles down his wrist to trace across the palm clamped around his pulse. His eyes slide to look at Verai, snarl twitching a moment, before gradually unfurling back to its usual smarmy line.
“Someone’s touchy,” he says, unrolling the tension from his shoulders. He makes no effort to shake his hand out of the grip. “If you wanted to hold my hand, you could have just asked.”
Mom looks up when the topic switches, her own smile genuine. “I’m glad you two are getting along,” she chuckles, quirking a brow. “But you really shouldn’t play with your food!”
“I’ll have another.” Kazuki, now pacified, lets go of the ruined sandwich, dropping it back onto his plate with a splat.
The sound of pattering footsteps alerts the diners to the commotion in the hallway.
Sprigatito huffs, sprinting to catch up to Litten. Adrenaline pumps in his veins, with just a hint of guilt since he had ruined their tug-of-war. He likes playing with Litten. They’re both the same size, but she’s strong and determined, and so full of energy! He has to work twice as hard to keep up.
That would be a lot easier if he could see.
<Wait for me! Wait for m-OW!> he yelps, crashing into the hallway wall. He hears Litten bolt ahead and scrambles to follow, feeling a hundred times heavier but still hellbent on staying with his friend.
“The fuck is going on over there?” Kazuki blinks as Verai’s pest comes barreling through, loud as usual with her cat sounds, and his own is—a curtain.
Sprigatito mewls pitifully, wandering in circles with the Ducklett-patterned curtain still draped over his head. <Litten? Where are you?>

Verai waited, a heartbeat, or maybe two, once Kazuki seemed calm. Finally, after an eternity, he released his grip on the man's wrist. He regarded Kazuki, and then his hand, stained by Kazuki's misdeeds. With a single, strong flick of his hand, he shook it clear. Kazuki was then ignored, Verai standing to wipe off his hands properly.
And then the cats reappeared.
Verai glanced over to see Litten springing over, followed by.... a wad of cloth. <Hi! We're pl- Oh!!!!> Litten's attention was instantly ripped from Purrai, instead fixed on the marinara puddle on the floor. She scampered, lapping at it- and sharply stopping. <Sprigatito!!> She called, bounding back to the shower curtain, and bunting it affectionately with her head. <This was so much fun! And there's another snack!!> She sang, chewing on Sprigatito for a moment before grabbing the curtain with her teeth, trying to pull it off of him.
Verai moved, scooping up Litten, freeing Sprigatito and scooping him up, too. "Don't eat tomato sauce," He chided, carrying them over to the cat bowls, which had actual cat food in them.

“You’re kind of a prissy bitch, aren’t you?” Kazuki chuckles, seeing how Verai cleans himself up as if trying to wipe away his touch entirely. Insufferable. He’s never going to stop annoying this guy.
“And that’s the second strike. Language!” Mom tuts, heaping more food onto their plates. “One more and you’re out, mister.”
Kazuki can only roll his eyes, shoving a sandwich into his mouth before he can be tempted to rebuke. He wishes he could leave.
<Litten?> Sprigatito asks, jumping a little when he feels something bump him, only to relax when he realizes it’s just his friend. <I want a snack too!> he shakes his body to try and shrug the curtain off him, and even with Litten’s chewy aid, the thing doesn’t come off.
Just as he’s about to resign himself to life as a living curtain, he hears heavy footsteps and is lifted into the air. <Ah, hey! What gives?> he wiggles his stubby legs, unaccustomed to being carried. Whatever complaints he has are gone once he can dunk his head into his food bowl. He begins stuffing his face as if the world is ending.
“Thank you for feeding the kittens, dear,” Mom smiles, giving Kazuki a look as if saying ‘take notes’. She stands. “Now come over here and finish your food! While you’re both eating, I’ll grab your presents.” She sounds positively giddy as she says it, walking from the table down to the hallway and heading into her bedroom.
Kazuki continues chewing, glancing away from the direction she disappeared to. “... This isn’t that bad, actually."
A distant gasp. Mom’s voice echoes throughout the house: “MY ROOM!”
He swallows. “But it needs more salt.”

At the woman's request, Verai moved to sit in what was "his" seat, glancing at the kittens to ensure they were behaving. The plate, with the toasted sandwich, is entirely untouched, mirroring the glass of water that is not even marred by his fingerprints. He glanced over at Kazuki, who is gracelessly shoving the sandwich into his mouth.
"Why are you eating it?" He asked, even as Litten stepped back from the bowl, dropping a chunk of food onto the floor to further tear it into smaller, more manageable bits. His tone was a mix between curious, and derisive. "It isn't going to help you."
Mom's screams went unaddressed.

“Same reason why I’m sticking with you,” Kazuki says, chewing slowly as he stares at Verai with lidded eyes. “For the experience. Sure, it’s a mess and a waste of time.” He snickers. “But I’m still going to eat it anyway.”
Sprigatito pops his head out of his bowl, crumbs of food clinging to his whiskers. He glances to where Litten is eating food off the floor and quietly ninjas his way over to sniff at her bowl. If he’s quick while she isn’t looking—
“Well!” Mom’s voice finally re-emerges. Her hair is sticking out of her side ponytail and her smile is tight as she regards them, holding two shoeboxes in her hands stacked on top of each other. “My house is a mess and my collection of a hundred lovingly-crafted scrapbooks has been completely taken out of order, but I have your presents.”
She puts them on the table and regards both men with her hands on her hips. “They’re running shoes! So you can both stop wandering around bare-footed.”
Kazuki pauses and looks down. He honestly hadn’t noticed. He continues chewing; taking off your shoes indoors is polite anyways. He doesn't deign to think about the dirt they tracked.
“But you are both cleaning up before you go. And my shelf is in chronological order, sorted further into seasons, thank you.”

Verai just studied Kazuki, processing his answer. "You are... disgusting." He said simply, glancing up as Mother finally returned to the room. He listened, looking at the boxes as they were addressed. That was kind- Despite all the disservice they had shown this woman.
"My apologies," He said, apologizing because he knew Kazuki wouldn't. "We will ensure the room is cleaned again before we leave." So saying, he eased himself up from the table, moving towards the kittens. Litten had noticed, despite Springatito's attempts, and was low to the ground, eyes wide and black, butt wiggling as she attempted her arcane incantations, preparing to launch herself at-
<Hey!> She squeaked, torn from her criminal acts. <We were playing!!>
"Mhm. We can play more after we clean up." He said, carrying the litten off to go, responsibly, clean up the bedroom.

The smirk Kazuki wears breaks into a full-blown grin after Verai understands what he means. Digusting is almost taken as a compliment. He continues being infuriatingly pleased even after Mom barges in, even after Verai takes the initiative to apologize for them both.
Cleaning up is, of course, a goddamn chore, but it’s probably required to complete this hassle of a tutorial, anyway. And the additional excuse to stick around to poke at his new toy’s nerves is a welcome one in his book.
Sprigatito pauses at the sound of Litten’s protests, ears pricking up, his cheeks puffed with stolen, delicious loot when he raises his head. His friend’s flailing launches him into action, swallowing food and stumbling over to thrash soft paws against Purrai’s pant leg. When the man begins moving to the bedroom, Sprigatito comes along, clinging to his leg like a koala and chewing the fabric with his tiny teeth.
Kazuki gets up, about to follow, until an arm blocks his way.
“Tut tut,” Mom says, and for someone over a head shorter than him, she looks quite confident, head tilted up as she moves her hand to point behind him. “You, table.”
Green eyes slowly narrow, before moving off to the side with a scoff. “Damn it.”

It was meditative, the cleaning. Everything was sorted loosely- Clothes in a pile, knicknacks atop a dresser, bed stripped and carefully made. Then, the clothes piled atop to fold and put away. Sentimental items placed where they felt they belonged. And then, the crux of the concern- The scrapbooks. Thankfully, "Mom" was organized, every scrapbook carefully dated. Years were put together first, and then by season. And then, one by one, they were put onto the bookshelf, carefully aligned.
Litten and Sprigatito helped, where they could, mainly by burrowing into the piles of clothes, chasing each other under the bed, climbing up onto a shelf in the closet, and Sprigatito crying because Litten trapped him behind the open door. Verai stepped back, looking over the room again, and scooped up both cats, one in each arm.
He frowned as he returned to the kitchen. He half expected the place to be more dirty than when he had left, but it was surprisingly... better. For the most part.
"You need to let the spray sit a moment! Mom was saying, smacking Kazuki in the head with a flimsy spatula. "If you wipe it up too quickly, it won't have done anything!"

“What does it matter!” Kazuki hisses. “It’s clean!” Smack once again, and it is incredible, seeing how quickly a housewife can swat down a professional fighter before he can duck.
“But is it cleansed?” Mom insists. “Bacteria, Kazuki! You are a grown man, you should know this!”
“As if you can even get sick!”
“Of course I can, and in fact I’m getting sick right now. Sick of your attitude!”
Instead of tearing his hair out, Kazuki proceeds to aggressively respray the cleared table with cleaner, cursing under his breath.
“And now you’re spraying too much. Really, is there such a need to be wasteful?” Mom sighs. She pauses, finally noticing Verai in the room with the kittens in tow. “Oh, welcome back, dear! Finished already?”
Shuffling over to him, Mom beams, cooing briefly at the kittens. Sprigatito has learned to be accustomed to being carried by Purrai by now, and after wiggling his legs in the air for a bit, proceeds engaged in aerial warfare with Litten, batting at her paws.
“It’s already over… goodness.” Mom looks close to tears, shining with pride. “My boys are heading out into the world as pokemon trainers… I’m sure it’ll be wonderful. Just remember to have fun! And if you're ever tired from the journey, know you can always come home.”
Kazuki pauses, practically throwing his hands up, one still clutching a cleaning rag. “The hell! You aren’t even checking his work?”
“No need,” Mom says, still smiling gently at Verai. “I’m sure my room is now spotless.”
Then she turns, “Hurry over there, you’ve still got the dishes to do! I thought you didn’t want Verai getting a head start?”
Another loud sound of frustration, before Kazuki proceeds to move double time, leaving wiping down the table for after he’s finished scrubbing the dishes, his mess having returned to bite him.
