NON-PLAYER CHARACTERSWhat are NPCs, and how do they act on-site?NPCs behave like real people more often than they don’t. For every NPC that just spouts three recycled lines of game dialogue and stands in one place waiting to be talked to, there are ten others with a wider variety of reactions, emotions, and intelligence. These NPCs are to be considered the norm on UNOVR and can be interacted with almost interchangeably from real people.
It is worth mentioning that NPCs can gain depth, develop, learn, and become more complex given enough interaction with Player Characters. This especially applies to Pokémon and major “named” NPCs.
NPCs are capable of recognizing Player Characters as different from themselves and will generally default to their guidance, but will not be able to understand the “game” nature of their own existence. They view PCs as “important people” and themselves as “ordinary people.” How an individual NPC reacts to that information varies—they may be resigned, content, or resentful.
There is no clear label or indicator of when a person is a NPC, but they are usually easy to spot. NPCs never have Trainer Classes (Kindler, Gardener, etc) and lack Player Characters’ aesthetic effect on the environment. Additionally, NPCs are unable to understand Pokémon Speech. NPCs can perceive and actually affect the Player Character’s User Interface in order to give them quests, mark locations on the minimap, or send messages. However, NPCs do not actually have a UI of their own.

MAJOR NPCS
recurring and important characters across unovrProfessor Ash Professor Ash is a renowned cryptozoologist known for her cool head and logical, straightforward approach to research. She is well respected in her field for her work on supernatural phenomena, which includes debunking centuries of false “new species” claims and spearheading the current dominant theory on how ghost Pokémon are created. She was chosen for this expedition due to the presence of several unexplained phenomena in the former-Unova region, which she seeks to answer through further research.
As of the end of the Thunderfall Raid, Professor Ash was dismissed from her position as Pokemon Professor. Armed with new knowledge about Pokemon Sentience, she has since revived the historical Team Plasma (and is recruiting). She has set up residence in the Abandoned Lab of Ostellia.
KNOWN PKMN: Beautifly (released), Runerigus, Nihilego
Dr. Bunya Professor Ash’s miniature assistant made her name known by creating a functional fossil resurrection machine out of scrap materials in her University dorm room, then releasing the design for free in the public domain. The fossil market has never been the same.
A bit of a mad scientist, Bunya and Professor Ash first collaborated during an attempt to resurrect Mew from a scrap of recovered DNA, which ended disastrously but formed a firm alliance between the science duo. Bunya was chosen as Ash's official replacement in Briarbane Settlement.
Bunya has an unusual way of speaking and a seemingly bottomless hunger for fresh fish. Recently, her corporeal form was lost due to an extended stint in the Corruption Zone, transforming her into a specter of darkness (she claims this will 'wear off').
KNOWN PKMN: Aerodactyl
COD13Codie is a sinister Microsoft Word-style Porygon mascot who usually floats around in your user interface, waiting for you to accidentally click on him. Known for his liberal use of the Customer Service Cannon, Codie was suspended from duty after the High Tide Raid and was replaced by the more generic and user-friendly mascot C0D13:QUACXEE until his recent resurrection. His deletion powers have been heavily limited, however, so he has mostly gone back to doing mildly threatening customer service.
KNOWN PKMN: Mini_Codie, Mini_Codie_2, Alolan Meowth, Grookey
SetaThe gatekeeper of the Everworld, Seta appears as a gray-cloaked figure who drains the color from the world around them. Their face is hidden by a golden mask, disguising their gender and/or true appearance. Seta is straightforward and levelheaded. Players will only encounter Seta if they seek the soul of a lost Pokemon.
KNOWN PKMN: The Everworld
ChadwickChadwick Bronstanton likes three things: beers, bros, beers with the bros, Pokemon, respecting women (nah, respecting HUMAN BEINGS), and eXtreme topless frisbee-golf.
He runs the Round 2 haunted frat/guild house on the principles of equality and fairness, and you can often find him pumping iron with his bros in the basement, or chatting with them on the back steps.
The Round 2 guild is like family to Chad, and he's always wanted a big family.
KNOWN PKMN: Audino, Granbull, Marshtomp
C.L.A.WLeader of The Creed, C.L.A.W (short for Cindy Lou-Ann Who) is a southern gothic temptress with a pistol, a long cigarette, and a harem of leather-wearing fanboys. She only dates bad boys (or girls) and expects absolute deference in her Guild. CLAW's goal is the acquisition of power and influence in the region, regardless of any methods it may take to acquire it. CLAW seeks mental control rather than might, and depends on her followers to follow through for her. For a reward, of course.
KNOWN PKMN: Rapidash, Musharna
CygnusDescribed by Professor Ash as "one of the single greatest minds of this century," Cygnus is a brilliant inventor, visionary, and legend-chaser from a different time. He is intense, cerebral, and generally two mental steps ahead of everyone else in the conversation.
Unfortunately, his time exploring the Corruption Zone has irreparably changed him. Codebreakers now are working to decipher the strange tongues Cygnus sometimes lapses into, as well as treating his symptoms of memory loss and confusion. This may simply be age, however.
KNOWN PKMN: Swanna, Ampharos
MomMom is an adorable lady with an infinite number of adopted in-game children. She effortlessly keeps track of all players by name and loves them all unconditionally. She is either very unfortunate or very prone to exaggeration, as she never tells the same story of what happened to your “Father” twice. She loves cooking super-sized foods and seeing any new Pokémon the player has found on their journey.
KNOWN PKMN: Medicham
"Your Rival"Your Rival differs per character, and is actually a variety of different (broadly similar) NPCs. A self-proclaimed musical prodigy striking out on his own after his parents cut him off, your rival punctuates his battles with epic guitar riffs and one-liners from his latest single (unreleased). He can sometimes be encountered giving out demo CD’s or playing for BYTES on the street. His confidence is unshakable no matter how many times he is beaten.
Your Rival may also be female or nonbinary.
NEW! Recently, Your Rival received a revised progression system for acquiring new Pokemon over time! Scroll down to the next post to read more!
{MORE NPCS} Bethany (Beta, Gothic, Nurse)Bethany is the Trade Shop shopkeeper in each discovered Area of UNOVR, though her form and personality seems to differ between locations. Coincidence?! No! Fan theory is that Bethany is actually a Ditto impersonating human form, though there is no evidence to support this. Currently, Bethany can be encountered on Beta Island (in the form of a dancing old woman) and in Briarbane Settlement (in the form of a witchy goth). Recently, a Nurse Bethany has also been spotted.
KNOWN PKMN: Stoutland (Beta), Gothitelle (Gothic), Chansey (Nurse)
Ol' BlarneyA fisherman from Beta Island who once dreamed of catching the colossal High Karp, Ol' Blarney is a romantic old guy out searching the seas for his Five Perfect Brides. He loves fish Pokemon (maybe too much) and runs a local sandwich shop with his Grapploct in his free time, where players can enjoy reading fishing almanacs.
KNOWN PKMN: Grapploct
Chanda MamaA moon spirit which takes the shape of a wicked Sylveon, this trickster character lives to be entertained and knows just how to pull players' strings to make it happen. Delighted by rhyme, dance, games of chance, punishment, and human suffering. Chanda Mama is the living embodiment of 'don't trust the fae.'
KNOWN ITEMS: Firecracker Red Freedom Top® Three-Piece Hardtop 2023 Jeep Wrangler
The PrincessFirst encountered sleeping in a casket in the Misty Timberlands, the Princess is a parasitic entity which infested the Precipice Shrine and usurped its Legendary Pokemon (Articuno). She appeared either in the shape of a winged human princess with blank white eyes or (evidenced in alternate regional servers) Galarian Articuno. Dead, but her influence remains...
KNOWN BOONS: Boon of Awakening
King ArticunoThe co-ruler of the newly-established Dream Kingdom alongside Queen Rubella (Ruby), King Articuno appears in the shape of a middle-aged king with a long, silken beard that trails almost to the ground. He conducts himself with dignity and composure, but is well-regarded to be the weakest of the Legendary Bird trio due to his long imprisonment.
KNOWN PKMN: Salamence
The PrinceZapdos in human form, The Prince appears to be a red-haired man in his mid-30's with yellow eyes. He was heavily wounded by the Princess and taken prisoner in the Dream Kingdom for some time, but was set free and successfully reclaimed the Giant Shrine on the Surge Steppes. He seems to have a violent and unpredictable temper.
KNOWN BOONS: Boon of Surging
White LittenThis shape-shifting entity from worlds beyond our own usually appears as a white Litten who speaks only in alien hieroglyphs. He is a wanderer, far-traveler, and seems to have survived centuries due to faster-than-light travel and time dilation. Litten often seems eccentric or speaks in riddles, responding to passive psychic awareness of local events. When he takes red Solgaleo form, his true intelligence is revealed.
KNOWN FORMS: Litten, Solgaleo
HearteaterA flightless, vampire-coded red Lunala who was roosting beneath Ostellia until being sealed in The Princess's casket to await further judgement. Hearteater's bottomless appetite led to centuries of abducting Ultra Beasts from their home worlds and bending them to its will, forming an alien hive-mind. Hearteater is able to dissolve into mist as well as drain the color and will from living Pokemon.
KNOWN INHERITOR: Heartspawn

THE RIVAL: REVISED
a new system of progression for your unovr rivalSystem Admin:Rival has been around since the beginning of UNOVR, but this new system will allow the Rival to actually grow, change, and adapt in response to your interactions with them! They can become a close friend, a bitter enemy, or anywhere in between. It all matters on how you interact with them, and how you both grow together.
Your Rival differs per character, and is actually a variety of different (broadly similar) NPCs. Your Rival may also be female or nonbinary.
Mechanically, there are three styles of NPCs which can be chosen upon launch. These change not only their physical appearance, but their personality and what Pokémon they have!
Cola, Classic, and Custom:
Rival Tiers:Upon each Battle Thread, regardless if the Rival Wins or Loses, they go up a Tier. Their Pokémon's stats increase to the next Tier, and they are able to gain new Pokémon. Their team will typically be balanced between Sweepers, Tanks, and Supports, but it is up to you to decide what exactly their Pokémon are!
- T1 - Starter & Secondary Pokémon
- T2 - Add a Pokémon from Current Route, Owns a Legendary Egg (from any currently available DNA)
- T3 - Add a Random (Rookery) Pokémon, Legendary Hatched (Baby, can't fight)
- T4 - Legendary Juvenile (moves capped at lvl 20, rarity +15, no signature moves)
- T5 - Legendary Adult (rarity +20, no other limitations)
Gaining New Pokémon:After Rival reaches T2, they immediately gain a new Pokémon from the route the battle took place in, and T3 from any Rookery egg. However, your Rival can actually gain additional Pokémon as well! After a Rival has reached Tier 2/Tier 3, during any Non-Combat thread involving them, they are able to catch or hatch a new Pokémon to permanently join their team through roleplay!
However, Rivals can never have more than one Legendary Pokémon. THANK YOU TO MAGNERE FOR THIS WRITEUP!
