A sharp, ceaseless ringing coalesced into being.
And then the pain. Silvermoon was laying on their side, pain lancing up everything. Their head throbbed, pounding further as they tenderly moved, trying to sit, but only being able to halfway push onto their hands. The ringing just kept getting louder, and Silvermoon tried to blink their eyes open- only to realize they already were, vision slowly fading back in through pinpricks.
Something touched their arm, and a flaming pain shot up the entire limb, Silvermoon giving a whimpering cry in response. <Hey! Hey! Are you okay? Hey! Help!> Phoenix squeaked, realizing that bumping into Silvermoon wasn't going to help, and running over to Kazuki. <Hey! Help!>
Silvermoon finally pulled themselves to a sitting position, leaned against the wall of the cave. Everything hurt. Kasey realized, distantly, that they were crying, sobs escaping in gasps. The pineco was a blurry teal amidst the brown, the other man a blur of tan. This- this was supposed to be a game.
Right?

In the pitch black, vague shadowy dreams pass through his memory; indecipherable, unmemorable. His mind relishes in the forced slumber, a respite from throngs of pain and exhaustion.
It feels all too short when his peace is shattered by panicked cheeping.
A groan. He tries to swat the noise maker away, but it’s a persistent thing, an alarm shoved in his ear. His eyes twitch open and the pain welcomes back him like a begrudging spouse.
“What the hell do you want,” he rasps, squinting tiredly at the orange chicken hopping by his head. It takes a second for his mind to remind him who it belongs to, the same time it takes for his ears to pick up on the sobs and gasps echoing through the sound of rain.
Goddamn it. A second to breathe, and then he hefts one elbow under his prone body; even his good arm protests, still sore from the blast. He rises enough to see Silvermoon leaning against the wall, small in the yawning tunnel with tears dribbling down their face.
God. Damn it.
Gritting his teeth, he continues pulling himself up until he sits. And then he staggers as he gets to his feet. One step scuffing against the burrow floor. Two.
The pain is annoying, but his body can take it. The blessing and curse of a high pain threshold are that he’ll weather it all, but it robs him of the ability to escape with ease.
Standing in front of some kid having a breakdown makes him wish for that option.
“Did you break some shit? Why are you crying?” It comes out angry, a snarl. His eyes search them but can’t see much between the dim light and the distractions—the lightning and the tears.
He is not built for this. He is not a little stuffed dog to be held during a therapy session. He is a giant prick.
So, he rummages through his pockets with his good hand.
Sprigatito pops out in a quick flash of red light, eyes wide with excitement at being released at last, only for it to be doused by the sight of blood. He tries to mewl his concern, but he’s scooped up.
And then dropped onto an unfamiliar trainer’s lap. The kitten’s bewildered, of course, but he sniffs curiously. He smells salt. His own scent is sweeter, his fur as soft as dandelions.
“Hold the cat.” Not a dog, but close enough. Kazuki finally sits down, cross-legged and slumping. “And stop crying. Or—cry until you run out. Whatever.”

Silvermoon dragged their head up. It hurt to do that. They hurt. Why did they hurt?
The pineco. The explosion. They hurt.
The man- Silvermoon still didn't know his name, somehow. Had he not introduced himself? Had they just forgotten it?- was standing there, blurry and furious. He snarled- Silvermoon could catch the sharp edges of it, but not the words. They stared up at him. His face morphs into something resembling disgust. He was mad at them- They'd messed up, again. Their sobs caught in their throat, flinching back even before Kazuki reaches for his pockets.
They slowly opened their eyes again at the mewling of... a cat. The ringing had gone away enough for that. They looked up- and a little cat had been dropped on them.
"Hold the cat."
Silvermoon blinked, sniffling, and then curled themselves entirely around the sprigatito, crying into his fur. It's soft, like a stuffed animal. He smells like summer grass and fireflies.
Everything slowly comes- They way their arms are rubbed raw even through their clothes, the way sound isn't quite right, but so slowly improving. The thrumming pain in their head.
The way the man is still favoring his injured shoulder, the exhaustion through him as he sits there, slumped, like a puppet where all the strings had snapped.
"I'm sorry," They finally got out in a hoarse whisper, still marred with tears and muffled by fur. They wanted to say more- to ask if he was badly hurt. To ask what they could do. To ask how to make it stop. But nothing else came out. "I'm sorry."
Eventually, the tears ran out, and the cavern fell quiet once more.

Sprigatito mewls as he feels the stranger curl around him, wiggling. He’s not used to this much contact. Purrai carries him, and his trainer lets him ride on his shoulder sometimes, but now it’s as if he’s wrapped in the soft clothes of that one nice lady’s house, except instead of cloth, it’s made of scraped, trembling skin.
The stranger’s face buries into his fluff. He begins to purr, his paws resting against them before he gently bunts his head against their cheek, rubbing insistently. He smudges the tear tracks this way.
Kazuki is waiting for the pain to subside. He sits with his eyes down, tracing the drying line of red slithering from his shoulder to his fingertips. When Silvermoon finally speaks, his face sours, gaze moving from his lap to their eyes.
“I don’t want your apology,” he spits. “I want to get out of here.”
He reaches down and rips up the end of his pant leg. “If this is too much for you, you can leave. Accepting the quest teleported us here, it’ll probably get you out if you quit.”
He takes the jagged length of cloth and bites down on one end before beginning to wind it over his shoulder. “I’rm sht’ck’ng to d’end.” Pressing the makeshift bandage under his arm pit, he starts sloppily tying a knot one-handed over his bicep. “Like hell am I starting over after all that.”

Silvermoon whimpered softly, crushing Sprigatito a bit closer and rubbing their face against his, in turn. He was really soft- Had they found anything this soft in the game, yet? Even Phoenix wasn't this soft to the touch... Still shaky, they pulled back, and pressed a kiss to the top of his little head. They worked over Kazuki's words, frowning. They could leave... Leave the quest, leave the game too, maybe. Log out and try to recover. But...
"If I leave, you'll be alone." Silvermoon whispered. They worked their thumbs anxiously over the Sprigatito's fur. And that... wasn't kind. Not that exploding both of them was nice, but... "I..." Silvermoon swallowed, and took another breath. "I- I can get up." They didn't, at first, simply holding the little pokemon and trying to work themselves up to it.
Slowly, shakily, they finally began to get up, occasionally whimpering as something caught or burned, but did manage to get upright. Sprigatito was gently half-dropped on the ground, Silvermoon then tenderly removing their once-white cloak, folding it and putting it away. They moved forwards, clearly not as eager as they had been before, carefully kneeled down by Kazuki, and started trying to shore up the pseudo-tourniquet he'd started.

Sprigatito purrs and purrs, as if the closer he gets to being a car engine the more effective this healing strategy will be. The human holds him tighter and he’s a little more uncomfortable, but then he feels them press their lips on his head. The gesture has him blinking curiously, unsure of what it means—maybe it’s how humans purr?—but the stranger isn’t sobbing anymore, so maybe it worked!
The rain has thinned into a drizzle. Even a whisper carries in the lonesome expanse of the burrow.
There is a heat in Kazuki’s chest. Like his blood, boiling. Like shame. He hates the consideration they extend to him—as if he’s the one who broke down here. The injury? 'Tis but a fucking scratch.
When they get up and approach him, he recoils as if ready to snap their hands between his teeth. But they peel off the ridiculous cloak around their shoulders and approach him the way you approach a frightened animal.
He is very seriously debating on biting them.
They tug at the flimsy bandage on his shoulder and he resists the impulse, his eyes moving from their toothpick fingers to the pathetic excuse of medical aid barely hanging on his bicep. The blood has already changed its color. Denying help now would just be—impractical.
So for once, he stays put. He has a mean sneer on him as if he’s swallowed a lemon instead of given proper assistance, but he doesn’t make a fuss as they fix the tourniquet, adjusting his arm so the injured medic can work without moving unnecessarily.
“… Do I seriously have to call you Silvermoon?” he grumbles. “Are you a warrior cat?”
Sprigatito pauses where he's settled beside Silvermoon and his trainer, turned to the direction of the big scary tunnel (guard duty!) and looks back, ears twitching as if called.

His expression was malevolent, but Silvermoon tried to ignore him. The fix up the bandage, sitting back finally with a shaky sigh. And, of course, the first thing out of his mouth is mean. "Um, no." They never even read Warrior Cats. Their mom didn't like them. "You-" They wanted to deflect, no, you don't have to, but the only other thing they could think of was their own name. And if they learned nothing else on Surf Swell Island, it was not to give absolute strangers your real name. "My name is Silvermoon," They instead enforced, voice raising a bit in sort-of indignation.
They then had the audacity to pick up Sprigatito again, kissing his head again, and looking deeper into the cave. "So," They said, almost a bit put-out, like Kazuki had offended them. "Did you want to wait out the rain, or-"
There was another white-flash of lightning, and a rumbling snarl of thunder.

Kazuki gives them a flat look when they only emphasize their name again. But the bandage is secure; he moves his elbow in circles, testing it out. The wound still hurts like a bitch, but it doesn’t seem on the verge of killing him via bloodletting anymore, so this should do.
Sprigatito is picked up with ease. <Am I done with guard duty?> he asks disappointedly, perking up when Silvermoon kisses his head. He purrs while curled up in their arms. The kiss meant he had done a good job.
As Silvermoon asks Kazuki about their next move, the man is in the middle of getting up. He’s on a knee when everything flashes white and the burrow is filled with the sound of the howling skies outside. His sight fizzles and shakes with strange shapes, before finally settling.
It takes him a second to realize the floating text and symbols have completely disappeared. He attempts to pull out his inventory. The map. Anything.
“It’s busted.”
The rain comes down as a heavy sheet past the burrow, the Steppes now indecipherable under the thunderstorm.
They are trapped in the tunnel without a way to access their supplies or their other pokemon. There is no contacting other players. As far as he can tell, there is no way to log out either.
“Welp,” Kazuki slaps his thighs and stands up. “Guess that’s that.”
He pauses only to regard Silvermoon, his eyes briefly glancing at his cat. “Hey, Silvermoon,” he rolls the name around. Still weird. “You got a light? We can’t explore the rest of the tunnel when it’s that dark.”

Silvermoon had winced as light flooded the cave, blinking stars from their eyes as they held the cat close. "What's busted?" They asked- only to realize there was nothing. No map, no names, no chat- Nothing. They looked at the cat in their arms, who mewled... unintelligibly.
This... was bad.
Kazuki asked them something, and Silvermoon turned to face him. "Oh, um, yeah, I- I- C'mon P-Phoenix." The little torchic trotted over, cheeping urgently about- something- and started puffing out little bursts of flame. It wasn't a lot of light, but it was more than nothing. He started down the tunnel, and Silvermoon started slowly following him, looking over the walls.
The walls were scraped by the nidoran that lived there- a few still lurking in the darkness, watching with red eyes, but never approaching. Slowly, though, there were other markings- dark ink traced over the curves, swirling together to make shapes and designs. Silvermoon just looked at them, wondrous despite how they were stuck in a cave. "What do you think this means?" They asked, picking up torchic for more light, and stepping back to get a better view. It looked like an animal, but not one they'd seen before...
Quietly, the pokedex in their bag began to beep, slowly growing in insistence.

With a little chick spewing embers as their torch, they enter the rest of the tunnel. Kazuki keeps to the back, a little to the side. He remains aware of their flank while still keeping sight of the dim path ahead. Sprigatito hops in, weaving past his legs to walk alongside Silvermoon and in front of his trainer.
Beady red eyes follow their movements, Kazuki at first expecting another attack, but they remain stationary. Silvermoon picks up their torchic and bring attention to the strange markings on the walls.
“I don’t know. Could just be a design,” Kazuki says absentmindedly, reaching out to touch the ink with his good hand. Touching it left no flakes, the drawings well-preserved on the cavern walls. He traces the shape of them. “Definitely not any design I’ve seen.” A little crude but—interesting.
As Silvermoon steps back, the light dims, but spreads further out to reveal more of the drawing. What he had assumed to be its head turns out to only be a limb. It is much bigger. Much, much bigger.
The cavern has grown quiet. The hairs on Kazuki’s arms stand as he realizes he can’t even hear the nidoran’s scraping anymore; they’ve skulked elsewhere, hidden.
The tunnel rumbles, and this deep in, he can’t tell if it’s the thunderstorm outside.
“Kid,” he says, stepping back as Sprigatito begins to hiss, fur glowing as he summons a few sparse leaves. His body aches, not quite healed; not quite in the state to run. “Might want to get behind me again.”

The rumble shook everything, every aspect of the tunnels around them. Silvermoon didn't respond instantly, reaching to likewise brush their fingertips against the art. It was like- what it meant was almost there, just on the tip of their tongue- And it rumbled again, deeper and stronger, and Silvermoon finally stepped back, moving towards Kazuki.
And there was a sharp crack, from somewhere before them, the wall snapping- And a spot of pink light flaring to life... and looking at them. There was another crack, and the wall began to move, the design ripping itself free to loom before the trapped and injured trainers. It crept forward, horrible stone dragged against stone, and regarded them with its sole, burning eye. And then it screamed.
Silvermoon had gone half-behind Kazuki, looking fearfully up at the giant spirit. "What... do we do?"

The wall shatters, ceilings crumbling as jagged cracks snap around the markings on the wall. The ink—or what he thought was ink—proceeds to glow, and it’s then he realizes he’d been wrong.
He had seen this design before.
He’d been curious about it, seeing only a portion sticking out of the Professor’s desk—the hands—and had wanted sorely to fight it.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
Chunks of rock dislodge from the singular wall, connected to the main body by ghostly tendrils. Its eyes settle on them, and its painted mouth does not move as it releases a haunting wail.
GWOOOOOOOOOOOOOGH!
The tunnel shakes. He hears Silvermoon ask him what to do behind him, and Kazuki grits his teeth, his injuries radiating pain alongside the adrenaline in his veins. “The hell do you think? We need to get out! CAT!”
Sprigatito springs up from where he’d flattened against the floor in a panic, paws over his ears, now standing straight as if he hadn’t just cowered in the face of the monster.
“Seed bomb!”
A hail of seeds comes to shoot at the Runerigus, the massive stone creature howling as its stone arms move to cover its single eye. The seeds slam into its armor and the ghostly tendrils, rebounding and bouncing all over the tunnel.
The Runerigus quickly retaliates, massive arms clawing into the ground, barely burrowing before it lunges for Sprigatito, who yelps as he’s sent flying on a hunk of the dislodged floor.
The cat bounces on the ground like a squeaky toy, groaning, before staggering back up to his feet.
During the chaos, Kazuki begins moving back, urging Silvermoon out the direction they came from, the floor under their feet already littered with rubble and cracked stone.

The roar shook the entire cavern, Silvermoon wincing as they started running, trying to get away from the violent creature. Once, they tried to twist back, and look at Sprigatito- but a sharp shove from Kazuki kept them running, eyes forward. Phoenix had been running after them, as fast as his legs could take him- but that wasn't very fast, so when Sprigatito got launched he simply twisted, tiny wings raising as he readied his attack, swirling fire around himself and charging back at the runerigus with a cry, flames lapping at the foe.
The runerigus, surprisingly enough, did not like that, letting out another bellowing howl, and driving itself into the earth. Phoenix scrabbled to get away, but the ground ruptured underneath him, sending him flying into one of the cavern walls.
"Phoenix!" Silvermoon whirled, skidding a bit as they tried to quickly run back, towards the torchic, and towards the massive, furious ghost pokemon. Phoenix needed help, and they weren't going to abandon their starter- not like this-
The runerigus watched the trainers, eyes bright and omminous, dragging itself evercloser to them. Another unearthly cry escaped it.

The plan of fighting the sentient wall with two pocket-sized critters is not exactly working. The seeds and the rush of flames only serve to deter it momentarily, giving them a precious few seconds before the Runerigus counterattacks. Kazuki isn’t thinking about the battle behind him. His eyes are set forwards, to Silvermoon’s back and the exit ahead.
In the middle of those precious seconds, Silvermoon turns and tries to push past him, calling out the name of their pokemon.
Kazuki hisses, grabbing them with his good hand. “Do you want to die?! You can call the bird back when we’re out!” He opens his mouth to say something else but is quickly cut off by another bloodcurdling howl.
The ground under Sprigatito’s paws is shaking so hard he’s afraid he’ll fall through. Sand and stone debris are pouring in from the ceiling. The dust clouds settle enough for him to see Phoenix pressed against the walls.
<Back off!> comes his little war cry, charging forwards with blades of iridescent grass. The Runerigus covers its eye as the blades ricochet off its arms. Sprigatito skids to a stop near Phoenix, taking the Torchic’s fluffy wing in his mouth as he tries to tug him to safety behind a rock. <Chiggy! Wrr godda go!!>
His efforts are halted as the temperature in the cavern drops. His fur stands and he shivers, grateful then to be near the fire type as a veil of chilling energy spreads through the tunnel. It reaches through his fur, his skin—the sensation of some dreadful thing scratching his bones.
Kazuki curses, attempting to yank Silvermoon one-handed towards the exit. The hairs on his skin are now standing. The air has turned repulsive, as if a corpse had been deposited somewhere. “Come on, come on!” He looks towards the meager light seeping through the exit.
Fuck, they’re so close. They’re so close.
