Verai was leaned against the base of a tree. Kitten and Kitty were bounding around him, rustling into nearby bushes. Slowly, a small pile of fruits and berries were piling up next to him. A few were even, daringly, dropped in his lap. His eyes were closed, breathing slow, ears only idly twitching at the noises the cats made.
<When he wakes up! He's gonna be so surprised!!> Kitten growled, dragging a hefty grepa over, and trying to haul it onto Verai's chest. <Maybe we can BURY HIM in berries!!!!>
<I'd like that,> Kitty said, pausing to dreamily think- waking up in a pile of berries, as big as you were... <That sounds heavenly....>
Kitten turned at a rustle- and bounced in excitement. <SPRIGATITO!!! Hi!! Hi!!! Do you want to get berries with us?? We're gonna CRUSH PURRAI under them!!> She chattered, overly excited despite any growing tension. Why would there be, after all?? They had so many berries!!!

<KITTEN!> Sprigatito cries, nearly falling off his trainer’s shoulder in his excitement at both the snacks and the sight of his best friend. He climbs down Kazuki’s arm, pricking the man’s skin with his claws, before jumping off it like a springboard and scurrying straight for Kitten and the berries, fully intending to barrel into both.
Behind him is what appears to be a Meowth, who had been walking on the ground rather than catching a ride on their trainer. The new cat approaches curiously and cautiously, unsure of how to act in front of the unfamiliar pokemon.
Kazuki doesn't appear particularly bothered by the claws, and in fact, prefers them there over his face. He follows his cats with long, lazy strides, watching Verai with a growing smile. When he gets close enough, he drops down to crouch in front of the man, reaching forwards to pluck one of the berries from his lap.
“I leave you alone for a bit and you’re already becoming a monk?” He chuckles, popping the berry into his mouth. “Could’ve just called, Ver.”

Verai caught his breath with a soft snort as the cats tumbled next to him, berries falling apart everywhere. He stretched where he sat, looking over at Kazuki with a squint. "What do you want?" He grumbled, which wasn't how you greeted people. He slowly got to his feet, and-
Saw the meowth, trailing after Kazuki. He then promptly pushed past Kaz to pick up the pokemon, who wiggled a bit in his grip, settling once they were allowed on his shoulder. Her fur was rumpled, face dirtied- Kaz didn't know anything, did he?
"I'm taking her." He said, not looking at Kazuki or even asking. He reached into his bag, and pulled up the first pokeball he grabbed- The torchic, that Kitten had very bravely befriended.
If there was a berry-juice commotion at the tree, with Kitten, Kitty, and Sprigatito, he simply did not see it. Trading Verai's Torchic for Kazuki's Meowth!

Verai greets him with all the enthusiasm of a corpse. Kazuki snickers, but before he can make some quip, he’s pushed aside, Verai having bulldozed straight past him, to the Meowth he had obtained from his team’s romp at the Tower of Cats.
Kazuki stands up and turns to see Verai inspecting his prize critically, disapproval clear in the stiff line of his mouth. The cat looks like it’s just been picked up from an alleyway. Considering they spent a majority of their days fighting and traveling, he hadn’t found grooming a point of concern. Even Sprigatito, who groomed himself to excess, is now dyed purple with sticky Bluk juice, rolling in the berry pile as happily as a pig with his fellow kittens.
Their trade is done with no negotiations and no warning. Verai just shoves a random pokeball from his bag into Kazuki’s face, and it’s only then that Kazuki can blink at him, green eyes bewildered.
“Anyone ever tell you how bossy you are?” He laughs. He reaches into his pocket, taking out the meowth’s pokeball. “And here I was just going to hand her over to you. I don’t need another cat.” TRADE ACCEPTED

"You can't do that." He said, with all the air of someone who knew the rules. Which he himself did not. "The ownership gets blocked, or something." Was that true? Who knows. That's what Bria said.
Sure enough, know that Kazuki had agreed- by way of... not outright saying "no," he supposed- the trade screen flicks up, along with the little loading gif, before the trade is processed. As it was going to close, though, Verai's field of view seemed to spark, flickering brightly before fading like nothing had even happened. "What-" Verai hissed, then glaring at Kazuki like he was responsible for it. "What was that?"

“Really?” He says as someone who also didn’t know the rules but also didn’t care. He simply wanted to get rid of some deadweight; it’s a bonus to get something in return.
The trade, however, seems to think otherwise. It reaches the last possible moment before his eyesight fizzles, as if hit by a flashbang. He doesn’t get spots in his eyes, but he blinks anyways, bewildered when Verai faces him.
“The fuck are you looking at me for? I didn’t do anything,” Kazuki snaps back. He feels the inklings of a familiar discomfort.
Meanwhile, the kittens continue to play. Sprigatito makes a game out of balancing a berry on his nose and trying to toss it to Kitty or Kitten, the three of them taking turns and seeing how long it takes for the berry to pop. He’s finally nudged the right side of a Pecha berry onto his nose, and when he moves his head into the perfect berry toss, it is sent flying.
And does not land.
The Pecha berry hangs in the air, embedded into it like a butterfly wing on a board.
<Hey! What gives!?> Sprigatito whines, hopping on his back legs and trying to nudge it as if it were a basketball stuck in a hoop. It is far too high for him to reach.
Kazuki’s eyes widen. “Ah… shit."

Verai glanced over at Sprigatito's cry, looking at the berry, that... simply hung there, like a snapshot. Verai blinked, and it refused to fall, even as Kitten sprung for it, and missed. "What's going on?" He asked, quiet now.
There was then a call, breaking across the silent woods. It was a braying roar, between bear and bull, echoing against trees. Kitten, even, had gone quiet, running back to Verai's side as something stepped into view, well in the distance- but not far enough.
It was a deer- Or, it was supposed to be. It flickered and sparked, legs not quite attaching to body, head misplaced from where it was a frame ago. It stared down, between the gaps of the trees, at the pair of men, with far too many unblinking eyes.
{cw flashing image, glitch text} "W̶̛̭͔̒͛̈͝h̷̡̛͓͖̪̱̰͇̥͙͖̫̟̒͊̎̉̄̿͗̎͐̑͂̐̆̚͘ͅͅͅͅa̶̡̧̡̛̜̹͚͎͔̟̙̓̂̾͗̿̂̌̈̕͝t̴̢̛͓̲͓͉͍̙̼͍̅ͅ ̵̧̨̣͔̤̘̤̬͈̦͎̭̖̕t̷̤̣̭͓͐̆̍͘̚h̸̢̲͍̠̒͛̒́̌̐̀e̷̛̲̪̰̩̩̰̮̣̍͑̾͂͂̄͒̽͒̓̌͝͝ͅ ̷̞̳̘̣͇̻͍̥̹̱̮̤͗̅̈́̈́͒f̴̢̯̭̣̅̆̎̂͒̊́̒̈́̅͜͝u̷̢̯͙̝͊͆̃̀̓͛̄͌̾͋̓̄̚̕̚͝͝c̷̡͖͕̞̰̳͖̍͛̓͘͘k̶͈͖̣̬̆͌̾̒͌͒̒͒͊̍̏̓͛̕ ̶̧̼̳̖̭̲̻̝̙̺͓̠̖̏̒̽̀̇̒̑̈́́̍i̴͈͔̻̮͉̇͘͠s̵̳̾͋ ̶̦̳̘̞͈̥̻̹̀͌̇̓͂̾̏̓̎̾̾͜͠t̷̖̰̗͖̹̭̲̳̞̬̝̰͔͇̃͊̋̏͛̽̄̈́̊̚ͅͅh̶̩̯̳̬͍͍̣̞̪́̽̉́̏͑̒̎̌á̷̛̤̰̗͖̭̪̤̼̤̝̻̤̘̞̞̌̏͑͗̈́͌͐͑ṯ̵̱̟̼̭͉͉̮͓̥̙͔̘̩̥̝̀͊?̸̫͐̾̅͛̃", Verai asked, taking an uncharacteristic step backwards. "-go!" He finally forced out, scooping up Kitten and whistling for Kitty, who started bounding after him. The deer continued to follow.

Verai asks him for an explanation, but Kazuki has none. All he has to go by are memories: Perilous caves, ear-shattering audio, and a haunted timberland. He sees the pecha berry break the law of physics and knows in the pit of his stomach that something terrible is about to happen.
A warning call, and the creature emerges, and it is the worst abomination he has seen so far.
Kazuki’s hands clamp over his ears, but they don’t block the screech of Verai’s audio. It leaves his ears ringing in a familiar way. It’s painful to even look at the monster—its colors oversaturated and trembling out of its lines, as if being yanked by invisible hands. He tears his eyes away to make a break for it, but lags enough to see it take a step forward.
Its leg stretches to a bone-snapping length, reaching across the leaf-strewn ground like taffy—like a rubber band, like a spider’s leg, like sinew—becoming too thin as the tip reaches the floating pecha berry.
In the next second, the berry is speared into the ground, punctured and bleeding into the fertile soil.
The creature continues, moving at a sluggish rate, its frames cutting out and restarting constantly. And yet it keeps up. It takes massive, unnatural strides, contorting its body, dragging it forward just when it seems as if it’s out of sight.
“Holy FUCK!” Kazuki’s booking it, he’s breaking a personal best at this rate. Sprigatito clings to his shoulder for dear life, having jumped onto his trainer as soon as the monster had emerged, and is also now screaming. The cat makes a valiant effort to try and increase the distance between the trainers and the monster, but the magical leaves he chucks at its legs only rebound off it, before being frozen in the air like the pecha berry.
The grove shifts, ever so slightly. It still retains its auburn leaves and its honey-sweet sun. It’s just brighter. Time moves a little slower. In the grove, there is no spring and summer, only a season of bountiful harvest.

His chest hurt, ribs curling tighter and tigher as he ran, throat burning. He didn't dare look back, or even dare swallow. Kitten is clamped tight against him, face pressed into his chest, eyes squished shut. Kitty had caught up enough to cling to his leg, only faintly wailing in distress. Something was rising, a crackling below his hearing, something he could rather feel instead, pressing as if to cave in his skull.
The creature brayed again, and it simply was, not growing or quieting but just existing, no matter how they ran. The grove shifted around them, growing brighter, growing slower. Fruit and berries hang thick from trees. A leaf slowly falls and stills, locked in place. Verai does not think to move around it- and the leaf slices through his arm for his trouble.
He swore, grabbing at the gash- only for something to snap up in his face-
{cw flashing image}
He squinted, trying to figure out how to get it away with everything freaking out- The pop-up vanished, and a tree warped in front of him, Verai quickly jerking to the side-
Right to where the tree had been. His feet found nothing, and he fell, barely able to grab onto the edge of where the autumn ground cut out, just a looming pit of off-blue-grey below. The cats freaked out, Kitten shooting onto the grass, Kitty clawing her way up Verai's back to safety. "Fuck-"
The deer caught them both in its lamplight eyes, slowly putting down one leg, and starting to reach another forward.

The environment has begun working against them. The leaves and fruit fall and freeze in their path, the twigs and plant litter now indestructible spikes under their feet. Kazuki must weave and duck to avoid bashing his head on the floating apples and berries, all while their worst nightmare stalks after them.
He narrowly avoids crashing into a tree, skidding to a halt as it fizzles out of existence and is replaced instead by an endless abyss. Verai is not quite so lucky.
“Damn it, Ver!” Kazuki’s eyes move from where Verai hangs off the cliff, the man’s two cats reaching safety in a mad scramble. He looks over his shoulder to the writhing mass of eyes slowly but surely moving their way and drops down to his knees.
“This is- not- the time, for this shit!” He grabs Verai’s arm with one hand, the other latching onto the back of the man’s shirt and pulling. He has his feet braced against the edge of the pit as he pulls, pieces of dirt and rocks tumbling out from his soles into the nothingness. Sweat beads down his temple, knowing that any moment now he could be skewered through.
His eyes catch something flash in the monotonous void:
Behind him, Sprigatito panics. He scrambles as the looming monstrosity’s blinding gaze locks onto Kitty and Kitten, tripping on his own paws and landing on the dirt. He raises his head to see its leg reach forwards—<NO!>—and sends out a flurry of leaves, all of them rebounding off the creature’s body and freezing in the air before it.

Verai tried to dig himself into the earth further, but whenever he tried the dirt under his fingers slowly gave way to simply nothing, the bytes dissolving as they reached the air. He felt Kazuki grab him, trying to haul him up, and Verai tried to assist as much as he could without fear of pulling Kaz down with him.
The leaves froze, their trajectory and gravity simply erased. The creature kept its gaze on them, leg finally, jerkily, finding place on the ground, body snapping to meet it. It looked down at the pile of cats, mouth going slack, opening in an impossible and macabre display. And, with a rough bellow, it roared, the world around the noise distorting and warpinng, cats thrown backwards, trees sliding in and out of place-
And gaps in the geometry, enlargening.
Verai felt the ground give way under his arms, reflexively grabbing at the nearest solid- Kazuki's shoulder. They fell, wind whipping until even that faded away- and he slammed hard onto the ground, feeling Kazuki and the cats landing alongside. He groaned weakly, and simply laid there, slowly opening his eyes to the sky.
The edges were a sky blue, perfect and unblemished, and laid overtop was a dark brown-grey. He stared at it, trying to parse it, slowly coming to realize what he was looking at was the ground, but from beneath. Tree roots and burrows were visible, the underground parts of the far-off settlement, the deep roots of the metal spires in the Steppes.
All very much far above them.
The area of tree roots seemed to warp, pixelating and glitching, before it all seemed to snap and... presumably go back to normal. "Kazuki," He rasped, reaching over to shove the other man, eyes still fixed upwards.

Sprigatito feels the blood drain out of his face as the monster approaches undeterred, its jaw unhinging. His trembling eyes stay locked onto the mouth, if it could even be called that. No teeth, no tongue, and no flesh inside. A dense, endless black hole.
The roar that comes next dislodges him from the ground, from his friends, sending him flying back as the trees around are scalped by the ensuing gale.
The wind whips hard against Kazuki's back, the unholy sound behind him causing every muscle in his body to tense. His feet reflexively dig into the lip of the pit but find nothing to brace against. He sees Verai’s hand latch onto his shoulder, pulling him along, into the abyss.
The freefall becomes a flash of spasmodic colors, scraping winds, and then pure white.
It’s only when he feels a hand shove his shoulder that he comes to. “M’going to kill ‘em.” His voice comes out muffled under the pile of cats on his face. “Everyone who allowed this half-finished shitheap of a game to ship. I’m going to kill them.”
Sprigatito mewls as he’s lifted by his scruff and placed on what feels like solid ground. Kazuki piles the cats on the floor and takes in the strange sight over their heads. He can’t even find it in him to be surprised, his eyes lidded and brows scrunched with disgust.
He raises his hand and tries to tap on the UI. Main Menu. Exit.
“This again,” he grumbles, tapping furiously on the icons. They blink and sound as if they’ve been pressed, but don’t do anything. He braces his arm against the ground and lifts the upper half of his body creakingly, ignoring the waves of soreness to see which godless place they’ve been sent to.
The new area is—well, it’s not terrifying but not exactly comforting. Walls have been erected everywhere, in metal or concrete or tile, creating corridors. There are lights but they’re placed haphazardly, as if designed for the walls they’re embedded in rather than the room.
And there are berries. And leaves, and stones, and all manners of things they saw in Birchwild. The items are floating. When they touch the ground, they tip over, affected by gravity.

Verai finally looked around, at the ominous room around them. The items hovering, strangely. The walls, repeating themselves. "What is all of this?" He asked, voice torn between curiosity, concern, and anger. It was bizarre, some kind of strange back warehouse. Why wasn't there a ceiling? Why was half of it floating? He squinted, glaring at everything as if something more ominous would creep from an endless hallway.
Kitten slowly lifted themselves off the floor, stumbling dizzily. <Did.... are we....... did we win?> Kitty was simply laying on the floor, sprawled sidelong. Verai looked up, again, trying to see if there was anything- stairs, a ladder, anything. The only things that reached down were sprawling caves likes dark fingers, the distant roots of trees.
None of this was making sense- it wasn't real. Like Kazuki, albeit more slowly, Verai moved through the menus. Settings. Log out. Reload. Quit. Anything- Nothing reacted to him. There was a dread, growing deep- This was not a frightening place, and there was technically food and water- though it sat, ominously, at chest height- and the deer-creature was no longer in sight. But...
"We need to find a way out of here," Verai said, excelling at stating the obvious, and started walking. There were rows and rows of doors, and he grabbed the handle to one and threw it open.
The room opened to- the inside of a tent, canvas keeping the rain at bay. There was a faded poster on the wall, though it said "placeholder" isntead of showing any of the creatures. The filing cabinet was set firmly and awkwardly into the corner, instead of at a more natural angle, with the desk and chairs likewise set... strangely, as if they were only able to be set in specific places. As soon as he crossed the threshold, the sounds of wind and rain struck him- which vanished as soon as he crossed again. "How is this possible?"

“Garbage,” is all the answer Kazuki can offer to the question of what this broken wonderland they’ve been transported to is. It doesn’t make any sense as to why it even exists. There are patches that seem identical to what they’ve seen in the overworld, but others are entirely nonexistent from the usual maps. There are no other signs of life beyond their group.
<I think we did…?> Sprigatito blinks warily at their surroundings, the scents unfamiliar save for his friends. He gets up unsteadily, his heart still beating wild in his chest after such a terrifying encounter. He vigorously shakes his body, fluffing up. <Come on, it’s time to go!> The trainers were already on the move.
“No shit,” Kazuki says, following after Verai as they investigate the glitching labyrinth. He leans to peek over Verai’s shoulder into the room, recognizing immediately what it is—or what it’s supposed to be.
Verai goes to check the entrance of the tent, getting rain on himself, while he immediately moves for the desk. “It’s VR. Anything’s possible, and that's why we just saw our fucking nightmares come to life,” he answers absentmindedly, eyes focused on the desk flanked by crooked chairs and a filing cabinet.
It’s similar to the Professor’s, but the textures are simple, it doesn’t feel quite like wood. He pats it and feels something off. As if hollow, or hollow and filled. He tries to pull its drawers and peek into its gaps, but there’s no way to open it. Unless…
“Oi, Ver.” He raises his head. “Attack me.”
