William had not expected to find such obvious religious imagary in the newest Pokemon game. It was obvious it was by no means a significant thing in the game and was probably used for aesthetics more than anything, but from what he remembered of Pokemon from his childhood, it had always just been a game about collecting strange looking little creatures and making them battle eachother. He shook his head as he headed to a quieter spot and took out the pokeball he'd recieved from the starter laboratory.
The clicking sound that indicated the ball being opened or closing was a strangleyy satisfying one. As William crouched down to look at the green lizard thing, he tilted his head. "Such a strange looking thing you are, I doubt anything with such a tiny body and a massive head would do well in the real world," he chuckled as he offered his hand to the grass type to inspect. William almost jumped as the little snivy nuzzled it's big head against his hand, staring at him with it's big eyes like an overly realistic plushie. It really took him only a moment to soften and give the thing all the petting it could ask for.
As William sat on the ground, scrolling through the many many tutorials regarding skills, classes, equiping and battling, he found himself getting only more and more confused. Certainly in his past the games couldn't have been this complicated, right? He sighed and mindlessly pet the Snivy curled up in his lap as he tried to understand even half of what he was reading. He was pretty sure he'd managed to equip the little creature into a support class but he immedietly found himself wondering if that meant he'd be unable to properly battle or if his snivy could only heal like this; the confusion and slight panic were pretty apparent on his face.
Verai come help out this poor guy ; - ;

Verai returned most often to the Steppe to think, finding solace in the thunder and rain, the smell of ozone and electricity that continued to cloud the air. But, sometimes, he retreated here, to the Church of Ceaseless Downpour. It held a similar calm, allowing him to think, and reflect.
He held Kitten in his hands, the litten stretching sleepily. <Purrai!!! How long are we gonna sit here?? I wanna play with Waffle!!!>
“They’re not online right now,” Verai murmured, dipping to press his face to her own. “I’ll let you know as soon as Kazuki gets here.”
<Okay, you better!!!! But can we go somwhere else?? It’s boring here!!!>
Verai rolled his eyes, but got to his feet. He left the church, Kitten scrabbling up onto his shoulder, keeping watch. <Hey!!!! There’s someone there!!!>
“I know, Kitten, I’ve got them.” Verai murmured. The quick movement of everyone in Briarbane had taken time to get used to, but people sitting still weren’t much of a problem, even at the start of all of this.
<WAIT!!! You should talk to him!!>
“Why?”
<He’s old, like you!!!> Kitten chirped, guilelessly.
Verai rolled his eyes, heading down the steps from the Church. <WAIT FOR REAL!! I think he’s upset!> Kitten launched off of him, running up to Will and his snivy, tail swishing.
She blinked brightly up at him, pink mouth opening in a Mrrraaahhh!!
“Kitten,” Verai called, slowly trailing after her. He turned his gaze towards where Kitten was chattering, the UI activating. Player Character Will. “My apologies, Will, she can be a bit excitable.”
He offered a soft smile, either unaware or uncaring of the figure he struck- Metal armor, cat ears, and thick black feathered wings on his back. “Are you alright?”

The cat had arrived in Will's line of sight so suddenly it had made him jump a little, which in turn had slightly startled his snivy as well. "H-heavens, you scared me," he said and sighed in relief before offering his hand to the other Pokemon to inspect. It was nice to see there were more real animal-like Pokemon too. He for one had not been able to identify what snivy for example was supposed to be for example.
"Oh, it's alright," William assured with a smile as he looked up at the other player. Verai? He'd never met a Verai before, absently thinking what a nice name it was. He paid little mind to the other mans appearance; it had become quite apparent players in Unovr liked having quite flashy avatars.
"Is it that obvious?" he asked with a chuckle, shivering a little as his starter suddenly decided to climb from his lap to his shoulder. It tickled.
"This is my third time logging in and I am admittedly quite lost. I don't know much about video games and there's just so many menus and options that it's a bit overwhelming is all."

Verai gave a soft smile, moving to sit next to Will. “This is the first video game I’ve played… It’s a lot to get used to.” He remembered how confusing it was, with all the menus and pop-ups. What did he need someone to tell him, then?
“I’ve been playing for... nine months?” He mused. “There’s a lot here- My advice would be to not worry about it all yet. There’s so much to do- so many things to upgrade, pokemon to catch… the Arenas, the challenge towers… Title and class unlocks… It’s incredibly overwhelming.” Verai offered Will a wan smile.
“To that end… I wouldn’t worry about trying to figure everything out right now. Find something that looks interesting, and give it a try- there’s not really a wrong way to go about it.” Verai advised. He thought a moment, humming. “What do you enjoy doing? In- In real life, I mean.”

William really appriciated the stranger taking time off his day to sit down and have a talk with him; he nodded his head and smiled through his words to indicate he was paying attention. This Verai person sounded older too, perhaps that made him feel even more comfortable with the interaction.
"It really is a lot, I think I've gotten overwhelmed each time I logged in," Will admitted with a chuckle, mindleslly petting his snivy. He knew that the basic goals in the old games were catching all the pokemon and defeading some sort of list of powerful trainers. He wished he'd asked his daughter which of the two had drawn her in. Maybe it had been both, or perhaps neither.
"I'm quite a simple person. I tend to garden and enjoy a variety of teas and coffees; I enjoy trying different flavours and being surprised by new combinations. As for work, I've been inthe finance industry well over a decade now." As he spoke, William couldn't help but to realize how much of a boring person he was. Maybe if he'd been more adventurous, offered exciting hobbies and past times to do with his kid she'd be still here. He could only shake those thoughts away, not wanting to burden a stranger with his saddness.
"I do hope you don't mind me asking, but how old are you?" William found himself asking, "I'm in my fourties and you sound like an adult as well. I was worried only kids or generally younger people played."

Will spoke, and Verai listened quietly. Someone who liked to garden, and drink tea… Verai laughed softly. He’d found the right class, then…
“Hm? No, I’m in my fourties. I’ve run into several adults who play.” Like Tuesday, Orion- Kazuki. He gave a soft laugh. “My daughter got me to play so that I’d make some friends…”
“If you like teas and coffee, I would check out the T.E.A. Shop. It’s over on the west side of the settlement, past Mom’s house.” A smile quirked over his face. “Though- it’s only open on tuesday, because that’s normally the only time Tuesday is on.”
Verai laughed softly. “She’s been playing for longer than I have- she should be able to help you, too. And… though this world is their reality- be sure to talk to your pokemon, too. They know a lot.”

William found himself immedietly smiling at Verais words. He supposed they were quite similar then, seeing as the reason he was trying out the game was also for his daughter. Of course he wouldn't admit that, as the topic was quite heavy and he'd hate to burden a stranger with that.
"Oh that is such a relief to hear. I've met very few players so far and from what I've been able to tell, they've been younger," he admitted, "how admirable of you to start playing because your daughter suggested it. It sounds like the two of you have a wonderful relationship." Deep down, William coudln't help but to be a little jealous of that. Maybe if he'd been as close to Lucy, things would have ended differently.
"The T.E.A shop?" William asked, tilting his head to the side and almost dropping his snivy from his shoulder. He sheepishly apologized to the creature, having forgotten about it briefly before continuing, "does it sell actual tea? or is it an acronym for something?"
"Oh, actually, I would love to know what you think of the game. Have you found something enjoyable for you?" Perhaps learning other peoples perspectives on what's fun about the game would allow him to find his own little niche too.

Verai couldn’t help but smile- It sounds like the two of you have a wonderful relationship. They did, didn’t they? He had been so worried, the whole time- even now- but… “I’m incredibly grateful to have her in my life.” He said, and it was the truth.
Verai glanced over at the sound of a little scuffle, Kitten reaching with a paw to try and entice the half-forgotten snivy to play- all this talking was boring, actually!- and Verai could only give a bit of a shrug. “She does sell tea, and coffee, and the like- but as to what the name stands for? I’m not sure if Tuesday even knows.”
The next question gave him pause, though it’s one he really should have anticipated. Have you found something enjoyable for you? He glanced away from Will, right as Kitten whirled to look at him, eyes bright and mischievous- as if she understood every word the man had spoke, and had an answer springing to her lips.
Verai, perhaps sensing this, simply picked her up like an unruly stray, holding her close to his chest as she yowled and writhed. “There’s a lot enjoyable, here.” He finally answered, the litten having calmed down a bit. “I like taking care of these creatures- letting them pull me on adventures I wouldn’t be able to go on normally. There are a lot of people to meet. People to help, and to help you, when you need it. There’s… a lot you can find here, Will. More than you’re expecting.”

William found himself smiling as he listened to the other man speak. He found himself hoping only the best for Verai and his daugher; even if a part of him would always be jealous of others who got to experience things such as their with their children, he still wished only the best for others. He'd never wish the grief he'd gone through on others.
The snivy had been spacing out a bit, but at the other Pokemon's attempt to catch its attention, the snivy tilted his head and approached the fellow Pokemon. It was quite obvious the snivy wasn't the most social creature; it mimicked what he'd seen trainers do and tried to pet the cat-like Pokemon's head. It made William chuckle to watch.
"I know they're not real, but I'm so worried about doing wrong by these creatures I find myself very hesitant to catch one," William admitted sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck, " especially when they're small like these two, I just want to do good by them you know? I'm pretty new to having any kind of pets, so I can't help but to be nervous." It took William a moment to realize he was rambling, so he shook his head slightly to clear his thoughts. "Oh, but overall my expectations are low, so I'm sure they will be exceeded," the grey-haired man admitted with a light laugh, "It's a curious place, this world. It's no wonder so many are facinated by it."

Verai gave a gentle nod as he listened to Will speak- His concerns, his reservations. It was all natural, for someone new to the space. He remembered being likewise concerned, when he first started- It was why he rescued that shy little meowth from Kazuki.
I know they're not real, but
“Will-” Verai spoke without realizing, taking a soft breath.
Consent. Communication. Agency.
“They are real.” Verai said, certainty in his voice, utmost conviction. He reached over, gently picking up the litten from where she was, conversely, trying to swat the snivy on the head. “Kitten has her own thoughts, her own personality. I leave her her own agency.” He explained, stroking her fur gently. “She didn’t come to me blank, a canvas for me to impart personhood onto. She came with it.”
“For others… Perhaps walk around Briarbane. There are several pokemon here not owned by anyone. Talk to them, and see if they’d like to join you. I find that local fruits and berries can be quite convincing.” He laughed, gently.
“It is a curious world… But, more than ever, it seems to be what we choose to make it. There’s something powerful about that.”

William seemed a little surprised by the other man's words before giving a small smile and nodding. He supposed, in a way, Verai was right, the Pokemon he'd seen so far, even the snivy he travelled with all seemed to have their own little personalities the same way pets in the real world did. That did however worry him slightly, would it mean the pain of losing one would be similar to that of losing a beloved pet outside? He wasn't sure he could take the pain of losing someone, even if it was just the loss of a coded creature that would disappear regardless of his wishes if the game was to ever be shut down. His smile turned into a look of worry before he shook his head and smiled again. It would not be appropriate to bring up such topics with a stranger.
"Talk to them," he mused, "ah, the option of Pokemon speech at the creation menu. I did not choose to enable it, so the conversation would be rather one-sided I'm afraid. Though I'm sure using food as a bribe would still go over just as well." He chuckled a little at the thought of using treats to convince these magical little creatures to join him. "But I think for now I might settle for just one. I'm still getting my bearings regarding even the very basics of the game after all. As for changing the world, or influencing it. I don't think that's for me. I would much rather just enjoy what others have made it." Perhaps it was silly, but he felt like he was too old to try and influence the game to be more to his liking; he was not the target demographic and he'd not even picked the game up due to loving the franchise. To him, it would have been selfish to try and change anything when he was here just to remember his daughter.
