She has been ignoring the tutorials notifications that kept prompting up on her interface sense she started the game. And now that she has gotten use to the system and explored the game a little, the tutorials she hasn’t done are hindering her ability to go any further. Wolf wished she should just skipped them. After all, this wasn’t her first time playing video games. Let alone, pokemon games. Yet, it was something that needed to be done.
TUTORIAL 003 - …WHAT WAS HIS NAME AGAIN? STARTING NOW….
A heavy sighed escaped her, long wolf tail twitched as she waited for the prompted that the tutorial has been started. Out of the blue, intense battle music filled her wolf ears. It practically startled her. Another prompted popped up before her.
CHOOSE A NAME FOR YOUR RIVAL
A brow rose, curiously. Wolf took a moment, trying to think of a cool name for her personal rival. After all, if this is like any other game she’s going to see this “rival” a lot throughout the game progression. And after a minute or two, the wolf woman smirked and typed in her response.
VALLON IS WAITING FOR YOU IN NEXT TOWN. MEET UP WITH YOUR PARTNER AND DEFEAT YOUR RIVALS TOGETHER!
Wolf let out another heavy sigh. Really. She shouldn’t do this alone. Whatever. A marker on her mini map flashed to indicated the current location of her tutorial partner. “Sweet. Not too far away.” Once she marked the location to track, another marker flashed to reveal where they needed to head next. “Alright. I get it. Go away.” A single hand gesture removed the notifications that were pestering her, leaving her to find her tutorial partner using only her mini map.
With her head high, pale golden orbs fixed on the direction it indicated. She wondered what other new plays have joined the game sense she started. One boot in front of the other, the wolf hybrid began to walk towards them. Expression flat, bored if anything.

After having gotten his feet wet, Josh wanted to take Ares to Route 1 for his first battles. If he knew the early game well, the newbie areas were full of grass and bug Pokémon, great for Ares to light on fire with EMBERS. As he and his Pokémon jogged forward, a pop-up obscured his vision, and an invisible force prevented him from going any closer to the tall grass outside the lab. Instead, it prompted him:
Information> PLEASE NAME YOUR RIVAL.
Now who was his biggest rival? It would be none other than ARAVAN ESCHER. Named after a college buddy that became an oceanographer, he wondered if the game would reflect that and choose a water-type starter for him. Confirming the name with the touch of a virtual button, the tutorial prompted him further.
Information> NAME CONFIRMED. DESTINATION UPDATED. ADVANCE TO THE NEXT TOWN AND DEFEAT YOUR RIVALS TOGETHER.
As Josh was walking near, and about to pass Wolf , Ares made a sudden outburst. "Where is he? Where is he? I wanna clobber him!" the Charmander cried.
Josh shook his head, feeling the expression would come off as threatening to his fellow player. "Sorry - Ares here just doesn't want to shut up. I think he's just excited for his first battle." Wolf

The sudden outburst scared the living poop out of her. Luckily though, no one seen her true horrid reaction to it. In fact, the only thing someone seen was the half wolf half human jump slightly, ears flatten against her skull, tail straightened, and mouth parted to let out a vicious hiss like snarl known often as the sound of a scared startled canine. Pale golden orbs glared at whatever it was, heart race as the whole fight or flight simulation reared in her head. She can fight! She will fight!
However, her pale golden orbs fell upon the charmander before promptly shifting to the blonde player who claimed such obnoxious creature. It took a moment for Wolf to gather herself, eyes wild before they began to simmer. “He needs to chill out before he gets himself killed,” she responded more bitter and harsh than she intended it to be, cleaning her throat and settling her racing heart. She didn’t mean it as a threat, not even a little. It was her startled anger getting the best of her. However, she didn’t take it back either.
Her gaze flickered to her marker on her mini map, noticing that the marker named Josh Devlin she once was following after has found her. And to this, her ears perked and tail (unwillingly) slightly wagged to this thought that she could get this darn tutorial over with already. “Oh… are you my partner for this thing?” If he was, this wasn’t a good impression at all. He might think she was his rival.

As Josh caught a glimpse of Wolf 's face, he, too, jumped a bit. There were non-human races playable in UNOVR? At least it seemed the strange player could speak English. "I know. Little one's a handful. I'm sure he'll grow up soon enough, though." His eyes stared toward the player's handle floating above her head. "Good to meet you, Wolf. If you can't see my tag, I go by Josh, and this is Ares," he introduced the two before briefly turning to the antsy Charmander.
"For a second, I thought you were Aravan," the blonde added. "So you're my battle partner and not who I'll be battling? What Pokémon do you have?"
As Wolf may have answered, a rebellious-looking man, looking older than Josh, approached the two of them. "So you're the new kid on the block?" he asked. "Aravan, and don't forget the name. Supposedly there's a big commotion on Route 8 that is calling for any and all experienced trainers. I gotta head over there, but my Pokémon's not strong enough yet. And I think the best way to get some experience under my belt is to see what you've learned about battle."
With that, the rock star clicked open a lone Poké Ball, a BLITZLE appearing from it. It was a good thing Wolf was here to help out; without her, this battle would be almost unwinnable. Wolf

Pale golden orbs held the blonde’s gaze, watching as his gaze flickered to, what she would only assume was, her gamer tag floating above her head before his gaze returned to hers. “Yes,” her own gaze flickered to his name, not appearing until eyes searched for it, “I can see your gamer tag.” As soon as her gaze shifted off of it and back on him, it disappeared. “It’s nice to meet you too, Josh Devlin.” She wanted to make a comment. Something along the lines of ‘Is that your real name? Seriously. Are you not creative enough to make up one?’ But at the same time, her username wasn’t very creative either so…. That’s that.
A brow rose curiously at him, her expression unmoved and still flat as a board. “Aravam? Is that what you named your rival?” What a strange name. Then again, her’s wasn’t anything to brag about here. It’s a name of the ‘villain’ in her favorite book. So… Again. That’s that. “Mine’s Vallon.” She paused, spotting a character approaching them. “I’m curious if all ‘rivals’ look the same or different for each character. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.” The NPC was close, about to probably engage the next ‘task’. But before it did, Wolf responded to his last question. “Oh right. Pokemon. I got several. Tier two.” She held up her hand with only two fingers, as if he needed the visual of what two is. “This will be easy. Don’t worry.” After all, Wolf wasn’t a newbie despite partaking in a tutorial.
The half wolf half human player stared at this ‘rival’ named Aravam for the longest time. For some reason, she expected more but knew that she was just over hyping herself. And as soon as Josh’s rival was done with his never ending speech, cue her rival spawning in and talking once more.
“Is she giving you trouble?” The white haired man called out to them, moving closer rather aggressively if you ask her. “I’ve heard a lot about you, Wolf.” The way he said her name, so demanding. It was weird. Like, she was truly his arch nemesis or something. “Think you’re so tough. Ha! I bet I can beat you with one eye closed.” A cocky grin spread across his face, eyeing her while holding his guitar.
“… Let’s get this over with please.”
Reaching into her pockets, the player summoned a creature. And at the same time, so did Vallon. Instantly, both sphere burst open to reveal what the other had in store. Vallon, her rival, had nothing more than a Chimchar. It hoped in place, already fired up. Meanwhile, Ziryan let out a growl that rattled in his helmet. Dark gaze glared at the poor fire monkey, about to get destroyed. Surprisingly enough, her ‘rival’ didn’t acknowledge that she had a rather rare creature before him. In fact, he seemed completely unfazed about the type null.
“How are we doing this? One v one or double battle?”
Sighing loudly, pale golden orbs flickered to Josh to let him pick.

Josh's character name was indeed also his real name. It wasn't due to a lack of creativity, either; he wanted to play the game as himself. Well, an idealized version of himself. A pudgy, 250-pound boy would not make it far in the world of UNOVR, he imagined. "Yep, Aravan. College buddy that wanted to be an oceanographer. He's a... rock star here, instead? From what I gathered." It seemed Wolf was as impatient as she was snippy. "I'm ready, too," he announced, clicking open a Poké Ball containing Ares, his Charmander.
"Lemme at him now!" the vocal fire-type whined.
"Shortly, Ares, shortly!" Josh reassured his partner. "There's two of us and two of them. Why not a teams match?" he suggested, turning back to Wolf. "That way, we can take our rivals down together. We win together or we lose together." In reality, Wolf and her Type: Null would likely be pulling most of the work. After their agreement, whatever it may have been, a notice popped up on the top of Josh's UI:
Information> Combat mode activated. Wolf

Josh seemed rather surprised when his rival he named ‘Aravan’ made his appearance, posing as a rock star instead of an oceanographer like how his friend was in real life. And to his, Wolf didn’t make a comment. She merely eyed him, a look that seemed puzzled that he thought otherwise. Although in some ways, she could see why. In most pokemon games, you did get to pick out of a few presets on how your rival looks like. However, Unovr wasn’t like most pokemon games.
Pale golden orbs shifted back to their set of twin rivals that waited for a response from them, her shoulders rose and fell in a casual shrug. “You heard him. Double battle it is.” The type null shifted his weight, eager to get this battling going. Meanwhile, the two rivals fell into position. An array of notification began to pop up in her line of sight, ranging from how to battle to what is needed to do to continue. And to this, Wolf simply button mashed through them until it was time to engage in battle. She already knew how to battle, all this information was useless to her.
“We'll kick your butt!”
“Yeah Yeah Yeah-“ She mumbled to her rival, waving her in mock dismissal of her rival, “Show them what you’re made of Ziryan.” Without hesitation, the chimera sprang into action. A silvery white shimmer encased his frame, sprinting forward towards the chimchar. Front talons dug into the earth, paws pushed him fast and fast. Suddenly, he was light as a feather and incredible speed. And when he was just inches from crashing into the fire type starter, he leaped high into the air and attempted a AERIAL ACE.
The chimchar wasn’t expecting it, eyes wide as the strange looking beast came crashing down onto him. Pain rippled its little body, an agony filled pain escaped the poor baby monkey. A twisted expression fell upon her rival’s face. It brought amusement to Wolf’s. “Get them Chimchar! Use Ember!” The fire type gathered itself, beating its chest before sucking in air. Wolf sighed, wishing Unvor would allow them to dodge attacks or at least a little more freedom in battling. Yet, games don’t allow that. Only role-play games do.
Several balls of red hot lava were hurled in the type nulls direction, the game not allowing him to effectively dodge the attack. The EMBER’s hit, singing his body though he responses to the burning was nothing more the a nasty snarl that rattled in his helmet. He casted the chimchar a dark look, ready to pummel this monkey into the ground. Wolf’s couldn’t help but cast a side eye to Josh Devlin , curious how he was doing against his.

A Type: Null? What was Wolf doing in the beginner's area with such a powerful Pokémon? Was he trying to humiliate Josh, who had only a Charmander at starting level? As his Pokémon's SCRATCHES raked across the Blitzle for single-digit damage, the blonde was distracted by the massive blows the chimeric Pokémon seemed to inflict upon the Chimchar. Though each exchange of QUICK ATTACK and SCRATCH resulted in little damage, it was clear that Josh was not going to win the race.
And this was the tutorial? Who was the developer of UNOVR again? Was it really Hydance, or was it, in reality, ATLUS Co, Ltd? As a MegaTen fan in the world outside the game, he welcomed brutal difficulty, but not in a game like this. If UNOVR was excessively challenging like an ATLUS RPG on the highest difficulty, he might not stick around too long...

Pale orbs shifted to her tutorial partner, attempting to hide a painful wince as she witnessed their side of the double battle not going as well as hers. Of course, her gaze quickly shifted back to her side when she felt the strange stare from Josh Devlin . Wolf ears pulled back and long furred tail flickered to the uneasiness she felt, both involuntarily. It wasn’t her fault he wasn’t ready for this tutorial and she was. She cleaned her throat, sighing behind her mask. “Keep the pressure Ziryan,” she called out in a cool calm tone, gaze flickered to her still determined rival VALLON and his pesky little chimchar, “A few more exchanges and we should be done here.” The type null emitted a low growl of a grumble, echoing in his helmet. Dark menacing gaze on the fire monkey, snarling at its up beat dance with the other players strum of the guitar.
“Don’t give up Chimchar! We can beat them! Keep the beat rolling!”
Wolf rolled her eyes. “Seriously… What a lame line. Go. End this before I throw up.”
Ziryan let out another strange alien like cry. A pinkish energy began to take over his dark gaze. Soon, the same energy encase his frame and then reached out towards the foe. The energy formed a three fingered gremlin like hand, opening up like a human hand only to snap shut once it reached its target. The chimchar whaled in pain, the hand IMPRISONing him and sending shock waves of powerful psychic energy through the fire monkey’s body. And after a few minutes of this, the energy was lost and disappeared without a trace.
“How?! How is this possible?! How did you get so strong so fast?!”
Again, Wolf rolled her eyes at the NPC rival VALLON’s reaction to her pokemon’s power. She was pretty sure this was how they all reacted when they reach a certain point in the battle. How lame.
“Chimchar! Use Ember!”
The weakened fire starter took in another deep breath, chest expanded dramatically to showcase this. And much like before, several balls of red hot embers expelled from its maw and towards her type null. The embers hitting her creature and causing him in grunt in pain. “Really wish they had an actual dodge feature in this game. Kinda lame that they don’t,” the hybrid mumbled out loud, secretly wishing the game makers could hear her complaint and change this. After all, they have been making changes since her time here. Maybe, that could be another change for the better. Doubtful though.

The IMPRISONED Chimchar had been reduced to naught but EMBERS, an attack that Ares could protect Wolf's Pokémon from. Not like they needed it; that Type: Null's stats were off the charts. While the Charmander's SCRATCHES were contributing some, his partner's Pokémon accounted for the Pyroar's share of the DPS.
Aravan's Pokémon was far less affected by the Type: Null's psychic attack, rearing before ramming and trampling all over Josh's with a SPARK attack. Those hoof-shaped red marks on Ares' cheek and side looked like they hurt. "Exactly, Wolf! Where's my Evasion stat at? I'd like an actual reward for going fast, please!"
Ares continued to slice and dice at the Chimchar with SCRATCHING claws until the electric-type put the Charmander out of his misery with a QUICK ATTACK. A red pop-up slid down from the top of Josh's screen:
Alert> All of your Pokémon have fallen.
Even so, it did not whisk Josh back to his Mom's house -- the reset point, since he had yet to visit a Shrine. Was the game waiting for Wolf to finish his now two-on-one battle?

It would seem that Wolf wasn’t the only one that found it rather strange to not have some kind of dodge feature in the game. If this was supposed advanced game, having lack of ability to dodge didn’t seem advanced to her. Regardless, there was nothing the hybrid could do other than watched the red hot embers crash into her type null and cause it pain. However, her pokemon were tougher than that.
“Just finish it please,” the player pleaded in a heavy sigh, wanting to get this tutorial done and over with already, “I don’t want to spend the day pretending we are newbies.” The type null growled menacingly, gaze darkened on the poor chimchar before it. It flinched away from his intense stare, knowing it was about to be done. However, rival VALLON seemed rather oblivious to it. What a surprised.
“Great job Chimchar. Keep it up!”
The type null muzzle opened, taking in a long deep breath. Its chest visibly expanded, chest puffed out. And within that same second, he expelled that breath. A loud ear piercing metal on metal sound erupted from its maw, shock waves of air reached towards the chimchar and soon shrouding it in unfathomed painful noises. It screamed in pain, hands rose to cover its ears. It didn’t work, the sounds too much for it to handle. And just as quickly as the METAL SOUND blasted the foe, the battle was over. The chimchar’s eyes rolled back, out cold.
“Noooooooo waaaaaaayy”
“CONGRATULATIONS! YOU BEAT YOUR RIVAL VALLON! WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXIT THE TUTORIAL MODE?”
Wolf shifted her gaze from the prompts that popped up before her to Josh Devlin. Long wolf tail flickered, feeling that she probably shouldn’t just leave. “Thanks again for taking this with me Josh. I’ve been pushing off these tutorials for so long. Maybe we can battle or take on a colossal sometime. See you around.” There. She was social. Not that she didn’t mind being social with other player, it just wasn’t the character she was trying to portray. Either way, Wolf let Josh say whatever he wanted to say before pressing finish. Another one down.
"TUTORIAL BEAT YOUR RIVAL COMPLETE!"

Josh felt like he had barely contributed; the Type: Null had inflicted absurd amounts of damage upon both rivals' Pokémon. "I should be thanking you, Wolf," Josh replied. "You carried me through this battle; I clearly have a lot to learn before I go into the arena myself. If you've got some lower-level Pokémon, I wouldn't mind a match with you. Once I've got a few Pokémon and some levels under my belt, I'd love to hit up an Instance with you. Do some level grinding together."
Just before Wolf clicked the prompt to finish the tutorial, he waved goodbyt to the other player. "See--"
Before he could finish his sentence, his vision turned white shortly after Wolf left. He woke up in his bed, rolling out of it slowly like he had slept all night. Whilc it wasn't a true white-out, was this what whiting out felt like? At least it didn't happen too far from where he was at... Wolf
