Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

"You wanted to kick some butt, Ares? It's finally time," Josh said to his partner with a grin. The Charmander's tail swung back and forth, which was good; the wind was making it cooler than he liked. There were some dark clouds above the plains, too; was weather coming in? Hopefully it was a dry thunderstorm and not a wet one; given that Charmander's life force was measured by how bright their tails burned, he was worried his partner would suffer environmental damage just by being in rain. "I thought you were taking me to the forest?" Ares asked, curious why he wasn't being put against easier, more helpless bug and grass-type opponents. "I want to catch myself a ride first," his trainer answered. "Wouldn't you rather ride than walk, too?" "...I guess I should enjoy it while I can," Ares replied with a chuckle. *"Considering you'll* be the one riding me one day. Not saying I'm not looking forward to it, but if you're expecting me to fly you across the world, you could stand to lose a few pounds."** Ouch. That was the reason Josh played the game in the first place: to escape the reality that he was a bit too pudgy to ride horseback. A little insensitive, aren't you, Ares? ENTERING THE TALL GRASS! When a Wild PKMN appears, reply using the ~~ATTACK~~ button to weaken it! But watch out— it might fight back! If your PKMN faints, you must go to the closest SHRINE to restore your PKMN. When the Wild PKMN's HP reaches 10% or below, up to 2 players may spend 25 BYTES to catch it here. You may also simply ~~retreat~~ to end the encounter. Retreating succeeds automatically.

Even so, Pokémon could bear heavier loads than real-world animals of their kind. Perhaps it was just Ares whining, underestimating his strength as a Charizard. The dragon-like species could easily lift a single person into the air, whether by their claws or perched behind their neck. Little would he know the game's limitations on flight until he had already committed to getting an aerial Pokémon. The moment Josh stepped into the tall grass, the instrumentation of the song changed to be more tense, more driving, and more defined. After but a few steps into the grass, he covered his eyed from his vision becoming a pixelated mess. The encounter alert startled Josh, being louder than he expected and not the sound he expected. "Phew! Get ready, Ares!" Josh pointed after he could see normally again. "Lemme at 'em!" the defiant Charmander brazenly added, grabbing his tail and looking ready to whip EMBERS at whatever moved beyond...

With blazing speed, a small, black equine leaped toward Ares, startling the Charmander and kicking him with a swift hoofbeat. By the time Ares could even react, the swift Pokémon was already out of range, the EMBER he had queued up cancelled. "Amazing..." Josh gasped, happy the Blitzle was attacking Ares and not him directly. With only initial equipment and very low Spirit, a SHOCK WAVE could leave the boy in dire straits. Combat Log> Ares' target is too far away. The exertion from the high speed charge left the electric-type reeling for a few valuable seconds, Ares reaching to grab his tail again after closing the gap. The Charmander waved the blazing appendage in the Blitzle's vicinity, a small wave of EMBERS effective in weakening the foe. Combat Log> Ares readies EMBER. No luck on inflicting a Burn, though. Josh was on healing duty, DEFENDING himself in case his quarry were to charge him directly. On foot, there was no outrunning such a swift creature. With how little time there was to react to its attacks, he was ready to enter a restorative into the queue the moment he felt Ares was in danger!

With a whinny and a high rear, every one of the Blitzle's white stripes glowed yellow. Though the young man had a good idea what Pokémon he wanted, he had significant less knowledge of the attacks they used. Fumbling through the combat UI, he looked up the move the electric-type used as Ares readied another whip of his burning tail. Combat Log> Blitzle is focusing for a powerful electric attack! This was bad. That Quick Attack on its own already hurt, doing an amount of damage Josh was not comfortable with. If the Blitzle got an electric attack off, whatever it hit was probably dropping. If it was him, he would be derezzed and on a trip to the Everworld. At level one. He hovered over the FLEE command, contemplating leaving his potential catch behind but deciding to stay the course. "Full send, Ares! EMBER again!" he commanded the fire-type. Combat Log> Ares readies EMBER. With a daring charge, the Charmander grabbed his tail again, flicking it toward the electric pony like a whip. EMBERS danced toward the foe, Josh keeping his fingers crossed that the weakened Ares could hit the damage range. It was not a difficult range to hit, but it was still a range. "And stay down!" the daring lizard bellowed.

Seeing double-digit damage inflicted made him smile. The wild tumbled, sparks flying from its still-live horn. Not wanting to get too close, he hurled his GOLDEN POKé BALL at the Blitzle, crossing his fingers that the heavy blow would be enough. It was, the device coming to a stop. For a first real encounter, that was heart-wrenching. Thrilling, even. That nasty electric attack to come could have easily derezzed him in a single shot. As the battle came to a close and a victory fanfare played in his ears, several popups assaulted Josh in rapid succession. Information> Defeated the enemy. Information> Please name your captured BLITZLE. One name quickly came to mind. There were many lightning horses throughout real-world mythology. This one would not be named after a horse, though, but the rider. "Welcome to Team Josh... Raiden." Once Raiden evolved into a Zebstrika, the boy would be able to realize the dream he escaped reality to live: zooming across the land on the back of a fiercely galloping steed. "I... I think that's enough action for a bit. How about we head to a Shrine to get you and Raiden patched up?" Josh asked. "Long as we go right back out there when... what's-his-name's feeling better!" Ares quipped, clearly ready for more. Josh rolled his eyes at Ares' obliviousness. "It's Raiden."
