Having ridden across the Surge Steppes many times with Granmarg, Josh was starting to develop some skill. He had the basics down, and even learned how to manage the thrust and shock of one of the equine's jumps. They could cross broken bridges and other small gaps with ease now, plus it was just plain fun having the wind in his face. While he was no master yet, he was fluent in the art and science of controlling the simplest of steeds.
Josh was ready to go faster. The fastest real world land animals were big cats. Though Pokémon were their own beast, he imagined that would hold generally true. Many big cats were too small for an adult human to ride on - especially the very fastest ones. The more he thought about it, the more he could do with a complete avatar makeover. Though there was a special shop he could do that at, he lacked the vouchers needed to do so.
That would be for another day. For now, he had some feline predators to catch and some Patrat to help mop up. Lucille and Cypress would have been able to most likely hear Josh approaching the tower; the clopping of Mudsdale hooves was pretty hard to miss, as well as the ground-type's whinnying as he reined the Pokémon to a stop.

Heading inside after exchanging pleasantries with his battle partners, Josh stepped inside the Cat Tower, the place full of nimble Patrat. A hundred of them. They were too nimble for even the four Shinx on the prowl to catch. They would need a little help. "I've got this first one!" the young man took action, withdrawing Granmarg and palming Xira's Poké Ball. The Yanma zipped about the tower's ground floor, her wings sounding like a go-kart's engine as she chased them down in a QUICK ATTACK.
The first few snaps of her mandibles could not catch any of the Patrat, but perseverance would pay off. Waiting for two of the four Shinx to corner one of them, Xira swooped on top of one with one last QUICK ATTACK, snatching the Normal-type with her legs. The vibrations quickly wore the wild out.
Josh flinched as he felt the floor beneath him start to slowly rise, like they were in an elevator. When the rising sensation went away, a new location message popped up at the top of his UI, indicating the progress they had made.

Pleasantries had been exchanged upon Lucille logging in after a busy work schedule. Heading into the tower, only to be greeted with the smell of cat litter and rodents. The snow-haired woman wafted her hand in front of her face to try and dislodge the scent assault on her nostrils. Not that it helped very much. Ashen-blue irises scanned the decor of the tower floors as they slowly ascended to the third floor. A large ghostly-wolverine towering over the height of the trainer, purple flames flickering around the back and base of its neck as relaxed crimson eyes seemed to stare vacantly into space. The Hisuian creature blinked slowly before stretching himself out and shaking out his fur ❝We're here now, what should we do? These Patrat aren't gonna clear themselves out, y'know?❞ Aymr the Hisuian Typhlosion asked, lowering his head and lifting one of his paws to scratch an irritating itch behind his ear. His back leg kicking as he reached the culprit. Boy did that feel good!
Lucille's gaze shifted to the prompt sitting in the objective box of her UI, USE A FIRE MOVE. Her head moved in a small nod before her attention drifted to her companion ❝Use Flamethrower to draw them out. Create a ring of fire if you must.❞ Upon the command, the towering fire-ghost Pokémon known as Aymr moved to lower himself down on all fours, crackling flames licking at the corners of his jaws as he gathered fire within his throat before spewing a continuous jet of flames at the various Patrat scattering themselves around the floor of the tower.

<"There are many Patrats, madame.">
The Houndour would chime, as Cypress tried to step around the scattering and quickly moving rat-like Pokemon. "I-I see that, Paprika," She'd begin, trying to keep an eye on the cats, rats, and her partner.
After pleasantry's were exchanged and the tower was entered, here she was, carefully tip-toeing around the third floor and trying to remember what move could cause flinching.
A Patrat stepped on Paprika's paw, prompting a yelp and a angry snap of jaws, dark energy surrounding them.
Houndour used Bite!
The Patrat quickly scurried away, as the objective chimed in completion, prompting Cypress to look over to Paprika with a smile.
The Houndour, despite the slight ache in his paw, smiled back - or at least tried to, in the way a dog can.

With every successful attack, the platform carrying the challengers, their Pokémon, and the mess of Patrat rose up the tower. The rate at which it was climbing forced Xira to buzz her wings louder so she could maintain the necessary thrust to keep up.

The next floor asked for a Johto Pokémon. Again. Josh squinted quizzically. Just how few prompts were in the pool that they had already started to repeat? "You're up again, Xira!" With a nod and a crunch of her mandibles, the large insect swooped into the field of Patrat, snatching one up with a QUICK ATTACK. The rodent squealed before passing out from being violently shaken. While Josh could touch Xira while her wings were in motion and only experience a moderate tingling sensation, for a creature a Patrat's size, it had to be unbearable. He knew better than to touch her wings, though; not only could he accidentally hurt her, but being smacked by an insect's wing beating invisibly fast had to be painful.
"Now that we've got a little downtime while the elevator goes up again, it might be fun to get to know you a little better!" Josh suggested, trying to make small talk while their Pokémon awaited the next floor. "My name's Josh, and I want to be a Pokémon racer!"

So far the rest of the team dealt with the annoying Patrat and the platform was raising with each consecitive attack. Honya was itching to join the fun and finally her chance came when a prompt asked to use a stat raising move.
"My turn!" She exclaimed excitedly and called out her partner pokemon, bulbasaur. "Midori, use Growth!" Ok, so maybe this round wasn't as appealing as the previous ones but it moved them along and that's what mattered, right?
"Cool! I wish I could ride one of my pokemon." Honya replied smiling. "You guys can call me Yuya." That was the nickname that appeared above her character's head. The truth was that none of them was her real name, but she liked her anonymity.
"I don't really have a goal in mind, I joined not long ago. I would like to catch many grass and bug types though." And all the adorable pokemon too, but boys usually didn't like to hear about it so she kept that part to herself. NEXT PROMPT #06: [Tower] Au5SKbQo1-501-50 |

The prompt chimed with 'Use a Grass Type Move', and Cypress was all the happy to provide it - the scattering Patrat being chased by a Fomantis with a expression of determination.
"Nice to meet you both - I'm Cypress," the wolf woman introduced herself as Spearmint continued to chase around the mice pokemon. "And Pokemon racing sounds interesting! Same with collecting grass and bug types!"
She sheepishly moved a hand behind her neck. "I'm not too sure about a goal either...but I think it'll come to me when it happens."
Fomantis used Razor Leaf!
One of the Patrat were knocked down to the ground by minty green leaves, prompting a chime of <"Got you!"> from Spearmint, and a chuckle from Cypress at her Pokemon's antics.

Lucille nodded her head as her Hisuian partner returned to her side ❝Good job, Aymr.❞ She said simply before turning her attention to the next prompt that popped up on her screen, fortunately she had thought to bring a few other Pokémon that she would typically have on hand. As the floor rose up to the next step in their towering adventure, Lucille breathed out as she reached under her bomber jacket to one of the inner pockets, taking out a pokeball that was reduced to its more portable size between two of her fingers, tapping the button in the center to enlarge it before nonchalantly tossing it up into the air. The sphere sending out a rather uninterested looking feline in the form of a Glameow. ❝Scratch the Patrat, if you would.❞ With the command issued, the Glameow's eyes began to gleam with predatory intent as slitted blue orbs flitted this way and that, seeking out her prey. She began to creep low to the ground as she approached one of the meerkat-like rodents, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce and unleash her claws on the unsuspecting victim.
That moment arrived as she leapt at the opportunity and brought her unsheathed claws down upon the Patrat she managed to sneak upon, a hopefully direct hit with her scratch attack! NEXT PROMPT #8: [Tower]upb5|mAn1-50 1-50 |

"Great to meet you, Yuya and Cypress!" Josh waved back as the rising elevator jolted, interrupting him as a prominent HUD message interrupted him:

"I'll need to see if there's a way to disable these map titles. Not being able to see for a few seconds with every new floor is getting annoying," he pouted before tilting his head back toward Yuya. "It's honestly worth spending some time in the Tall Grass to try to get one. Even if it's just to travel faster. Fast travel exists, yes, but it's limited. Plus I live in too densely populated of an area to ride horseback. It's part of why I joined the game in the first place!"
Xira's sonic attacks seemed to be ineffective against the next wave of Patrat, prompting Josh to withdraw Xira for Saber, his Manectric. "See if you can slow them down with a THUNDER WAVE! Stand behind me, everyone!" Whether his partners chose to do so or not, the blue and yellow wolf howled, loosing a wide line of electricity toward the normal-types and slowing their movement. He hoped this would make them easier to catch for the moment.
"As for an endgame goal... one of mine is to meet, befriend, and ride the legendary Pokémon Raikou," Josh replied, "the fastest Pokémon on land. A little sad he hasn't dropped in-game yet, but I'm really looking forward to it!" As the THUNDER WAVE slowed the Patrat to the point where Saber could easily catch one, Josh turned toward Lucille . "What about you?" he asked, the elevator platform mildly shaking as it rose closer to the final stop of the first ascent...

All Josh got in response to his question were swarming Patrat and idle animations from the three trainers that were supposed to help climb the tower. Were they AFK? No matter; he could socialize with them when they came back.

The next Patrat was incredibly swift; almost impossible for the untrained eye to follow. If there was one trainer that had the eyesight to follow them, it was Josh, having ridden at incredible speeds across the Surge Steppes on multiple occasions. With a QUICK ATTACK that made the wolf look like a living lightning bolt, it was not at all difficult to pin the slippery vermin underpaw. An alarm played throughout the tower as the platform began to rise, the shaft's lighting turning red.
Caution> Boss Stage ahead.

Still AFK, even after leaving the tower to go to the Arena and race a Skiddo, just to fulfill the conditions for the Boss Stage? "You three there? Any of you?" the blonde asked, clicking open Nitro's Poké Ball. Even the small ride Pokémon's added speed from being under the racer's control was not enough to tag the nimble Patrat with a charge alone. "Back into a corner and Vine Whip it!" Josh commanded.
With a rugged cry, the Skiddo extended two vines from beneath his leafy mane, whirling into the skittering ball of vermin with a spin attack that made Josh smile. It seemed even after being demoted from the status of Colossal Boss, he had rememberd his racing techniques. With the Boss Patrat out of the way, the platform rose another floor, leaving him and his three compatriots to ponder the spoils of war.

Seeing the Shinx added to his party made Josh's beaming smile grow. The black and blue feline was adorable in his young state, and big enough and fast enough to be worth riding when he grew up. It would be a long time before that day came, given how slow Pokémon were to evolve here.
"So what are we thinking for the Pokémon at level 20?" Josh asked as the tower's screen prompted the quartet for a Hoenn Pokémon. Reaching for his belt, Josh loosed his Manectric upon the swarming Patrat, standing in the corner to remain out of the way of a DISCHARGE that expanded from the center of the elevator. "I'd really love to have a Litleo. There was a past Pokémon game I got involved in. Collected them. Ended up having twelve before the game shut down."

No response from Josh's companions once more. He took the silence to mean that there were no objections to a Litleo as their reward. "I might want two. Males and females have different physiology, and having one of each would be great. Males are better fighters, but females are faster." One for the PVP arena, and one for the race track. In his eyes, felines made for fantastic racing Pokémon; though they did not have the stamina that horse Pokémon did, their claws gave them superb traction, able to remain sure-footed even on icy ground.
The twelfth floor asked for a Kanto Pokémon to be used - perfect for his very first Pokémon to hunt down another of the swarming Patrat! Withdrawing his Manectric for Ares, the Charmeleon grabbed his tail and whipped it toward the normal-types, scorching one with a barrage of EMBERS.

Another round on his own, and still no response? With AFK balloons floating above all three, it seemed like the rider was on his own. Thankfully, he had just the Pokémon the tower was asking for.
Josh recalled Ares to his Poké Ball in favor of Raiden, the racing-ready Zebstrika. Building up great speed, his FLAME CHARGE made Josh a bit toasty as he zipped around the elevator platform, squishing a few Patrat beneath his hard hooves.
