The sound of a raging thunderstorm made Josh's hair rise as Granmarg carried him across the Surge Steppes. At last starting to become more confident with the rhythm of his Mudsdale's running stroke. With confidence brimming, the novice rider kicked the ground-type's sides, coaxing him into a sprint. "Hyah!" he cried.
With recoil that made Josh feel like he was being yanked backward in his seat, the Mudsdale entered a full gallop. For a Pokémon, it was not very fast, but with little context on just how fast Pokémon could go, it felt liberating. "Whooooo-hooooo!!" he shouted, not having a care in the world as the Steppes flew by. Thankfully for him, it was a dry thunderstorm. If it started raining, it was going to hurt -- both for him and for his mount.

The field of iron spires became less and less dense as Josh rode north, farther away from the settlement -- and farther away from the safety the spires provided. The rider had Saber's Poké Ball at the ready to deflect any stray lightning that would strike nearby. He had already been struck by lightning once in the vast fields. Though he had survived, it was not something he wanted to experience again.
Reaching a large circle of taller grasses, Josh loosened his hold on his mount, Granmarg slowing down to a canter. Though they were still running, they wouldn't decimate smaller Pokémon by trampling over them. There were still a few Pokémon on his checklist before he went hunting elsewhere. Reining his Pokémon around the prairie grass in circles, he waited for the telltale obfuscation of his sight that accompanied the next wild Pokémon loading in.

Combat Log> Drilbur readies Rapid Spin.
The rider got his wish, though not the Pokémon he was expecting; he clutched his steed's reins tightly as Granmarg reared in surprise. A Drlibur had burrowed in front of the Mudsdale, ambushing him and nicking him with his RAPIDLY SPINNING drill. Had that been a direct hit, it would have caused a serious problem for Josh, likely incapacitating his only steed. Being stuck out in the Surge Steppes without a means of fast travel was far from idea. Not quite. There was a form of fast travel, but it involved a party wipe. That was not a good way to travel across UNOVR quickly. Besides, if he got sent to the Everworld, that would be a far longer detour than Josh could ever imagine.
Combat Log> Escaping... Combat Log> You successfully escaped.
"Geez, there are Drilbur out here, too?" Josh exhaled, a little worried about Granmarg's wounds. "You okay after that?" he asked out of concern.
"I'll be okay, Josh," the Mudsdale answered. "There's not a lot you can do about a Pokémon like that." Though Josh didn't know it, Drilbur were highly sensitive to vibration. Granmarg's hooves produced a lot of vibration when they clacked against the ground. Nowhere was safe against them. With that knowledge, he was now on two timers: the constant threat of Drilbur ambushes, and the weather. Those storm clouds were getting darker, and it looked to be more than just a dry thunderstorm.

Rather than circling the entire circle of prairie grass, Josh kept his Mudsadle to the north and east sides, particularly that corner. Those Drilbur were mean, doing quite the number on his mount. Had that been one of his other Pokémon, it would have been able to contact one of those attacks at most, perhaps even down it instantly on a critical hit. Random crits were one of the banes of early game, Pokémon having so few hit points that a single crit could easily determine the tide of a battle. In the arena, it wasn't as important, given the prize for winning was just rating points. Tangible rewards, such as Arena Points, were given win or lose.
While he was in the middle of the grassy field, Josh's vision again turned to a pixelated mess. Thie time, he had his Manectric, Saber, at his side, ready to fight so he didn't have to. Wasn't there an opponent he faced in the Arena... one that fought on their own accord? He would have to ask Verai about it. When he got back to the settlement, he would have to check on a friend request he sent them.

While it was an electric Pokémon, Mareep was not a Pokémon Josh was particularly interested in; only as a Mega Evolved Ampharos could it wear a saddle, gliding above UNOVR's surfaces. He had his sights on other dragons to begin with; once he had the capital he could blow while still saving money for a rainy day, he wanted to get a Fishing Rod and go for an extended fishing trip in search of Dratini.
Ducking and using his mount for cover, Josh let the Mareep's THUNDER SHOCK harmlessly be absorbed into Granmarg's body. He directed his mount to trample the electric-type, not caring whether he defeated the Pokémon. If he did, more experience was great. If not, it was no biggie; he had better places to grind for levels. He did wonder, though... when would RNG favor him and drop a Ponyta in his lap: before or after he had the levels necessary to craft a saddle for one?

The crackling electricity was mostly absorbed into the Mudsdale, though some of it did graze Josh, leaving him with a tingling feeling that made him unable to feel the reins for a few seconds. It was moments like these that made Josh grateful his pain settings were not in realism mode. Yes, he wanted to feel the carnage of battle and the power behind the gallop of some of his Pokémon, but he also didn't want to feel like he was going to die when he took a heavy blow.
Josh briefly exited the tall grass to turn Granmarg around, an eye to the sky to keep an eye out for inclement weather. While it always threatened to storm there, he had been to the Steppes long enough to be able to get an idea when truly nasty weather was coming. His Ground-type steed made him not afraid of the lightning. What he was afraid of was high winds blowing him out of his seat.

The Doduo before Josh was a tempting one. Dodrio could really put the pedal to the metal when properly trained, and their three sets of lungs gave them incredible endurance. While they were not capable of true flight, they could flap their wings to glide. Even so, the shape of their backs would make holding on awkward. It was not the type of ride Pokémon he was after yet. Perhaps when he was more experienced.
The wild was quick to jab at Granmarg, narrowly missing Josh with a twin-beaked FURY ATTACK before he fled the Pokémon. With how fast the flightless bird was, it took skillful control to build the speed needed to outrun the Doduo, but he eventually rode far away enough from it to despawn it. When would Ulysses learn Aqua Ring so he could start serving as a healer, anyway? Granmarg's HP was getting low -- low enough that he could no longer keep the ground-type in combat. He had to use some of his other Pokémon going forward.

Josh's rear was starting to mildly ache from how long he had ridden in circles around the prairie grasses. He was so far north that the iron spires did not offer complete protection against the elements, evidenced by the charred grass indicating lightning had struck there. Concerned about bring electrocuted a second time, the aspiring racer turned his Mudadale around.
There was still plenty of time to hunt for a Ponyta on the way back to Briarbane; Josh had ridden quite far from the settlement. Perhaps if the fates smiled upon him, he would have a fresh steed to carry him the rest of the way there. He clutched Ares' Poké Ball, debating letting the Charmander ride behind him.

The same Doduo from before was giving chase; had he not despawned it, after all? It seemed just as angry as before, sideswiping the fleeing horse with a FURY ATTACK and knocking him out. Automatically withdrawn to his Ball, he no longer held Josh up, the young man disappearing into the tall grass as he narrowly avoided being stomped by the flightless bird's powerful legs. Unable to see the human in the dense foliage, the Doduo dashed off.
Great. Now he was stuck walking back to Briarbane. He really needed to get a Pokémon with a revival skill. Ulysses would, but it would require more Bytes than he was willing to invest for the moment. Shaking his head, he clicked Saber's Poké Ball open, the Manectric giving him a minor shock as he affectionately nuzzled his trainer.

Without riding a mount, Josh's travel speed had been more than halved. With how late it was, he might need to make camp in the wilds; he had serious doubts of whether he could make it bank to Briarbane by nightfall. Tonight, he might be sleeping under the stars. Once the Doduo was out of sight, Josh slowly got to his feet and continued through the tall grass in search of the horse he desired. "Think we'll find one before the sun goes down, Saber?" he asked the electric wolf.
"I hope so! And I could get you back to Briarbane in no time flat!" Saber chirped back, evolution not doing much to stem his hyperactive tendencies. "What do you need a saddle for, anyway? Just get on my back!"
"I would, but the game won't let me."

The sound of hooves clopping made Josh perk up, his eyes widening as he scanned for their source. To his dismay, the hooves came from a Blitzle, not a Ponyta, and it was quick to take advantage of Josh's lack of mobility with a ramming SPARK attack. Expecting Saber's Lightning Rod to block the attack, he took cover behind the Manectric.
The big dog had failed to do so, both suffering a nasty electric shock. With a loud ROAR, the Manectric covered their tracks by forcing the wild to retreat in fright. "That was a r-r-rude awakening..." Josh stammered, still suffering from the effects of the electric shock. Puzzled, he searched the in-game help text for the word Ability. There was not one relevant result; did Abilities as he knew them not exist on UNOVR?

Josh's HP continued to dwindle with attack after attack, his gauge turning orange. Besides being a backup steed, the psychic-type subspecies of Ponyta would make for a fantastic healer, even capable of reviving fainted Pokémon with their mystic horns. That was why it was so important to make this capture
The longer the search went on, the lower the sun got in the sky, and the more likely it would be for him to have to pitch a tent. Sighing, he gave up on getting back to Briarbane in time, setting up stakes and a pole not far from the tall grass. Perhaps if he committed to setting up camp, the RNG would show him mercy, give him a Ponyta he could saddle up, and get back to town just in time to see the moon rise.

While Josh was pounding stakes into place, the sound of crashing electricity distracted him; Saber was busy warding an encroaching Doduo from tearing his tent to shreds with its twin, PECKING beaks. The two-headed bird's presence reiterated how urgent it was for him to get his tent set up. Wild Pokémon that couldn't see him wouldn't attack him.
It wouldn't take more than a THUNDER WAVE to send the bird packing, but he was running out of time. He had to wait for the electricity to discharge before grabbing the tent's metal support pole, too; it would not be pleasant touching it with that kind of current flowing across the object.

Even once the current had at last subsided, Josh's woes were not over; he was struggling to get the pole in place. He was on his own, too; Ares in his current form was too weak to help hold up such a tall and awkward object. It was a battle, but he managed to get his tent in place as the bottom of the sun touched the horizon.
Sending out Slider, Josh ordered the Rufflet to clear out a small patch of grass with a clever combination of TAILWIND and AERIAL ACE. The resulting dirt patch would prevent a fire spreading out of control as Ares lit it up with EMBERS from his tail. He created a fire for Josh to sit at until he felt like going to bed. Saber was still vigilant as ever, ready to give the signal if he ran into a Ponyta before it became too dark to see.

Just as Josh had finished setting up the tent and went outside to bask in the fire's warmth, a wild Nosepass used the magnetic field of a nearby iron spire to launch itself at an unsuspecting Saber in a super-speed TACKLE. The big dog squealed, his side thumping fiercely from the destructive impact. He sounded one last desperate ROAR to scare the rock-type away before collapsing in the tall grass, prompting Josh to withdraw his FAINTED Pokémon.
"Slider, you're on guard duty for now. The Pokémon out here are something else. Be careful!" Josh cautioned. With a loud squawk and no words, the Rufflet kept an eye out for invading Pokémon as the sun was sinking beneath the horizon.
