With little to do but bond with his remaining Pokémon and look through databases on his UI, Josh carried on conversation with the Charmander as Slider kept his eyes out for the horse his trainer desired. The fire-type's burning mane would be easier to see in the low-light conditions, the moon rising over the east. With it being a full moon, it wouldn't be completely dark outside, making fighting without an extra light source barely possible. "Hey Josh, when am I gonna get big and strong?" the Charmander asked.
Fiddling with his UI, he wanted to make sure he gave the correct answer. "When we reach level eight," the Kindler replied. That would not be for a while. He had just reached level three during his adventures in the Glowmoss Grove, and that experience bar was already starting to fill more slowly. With every level requiring exponentially more experience than the last, it would be slow going making those evolutions happen.
"How long's that gonna take?" Ares asked. He was tired of being short and weak. When he became a Charmeleon, he could ride one of Josh's Pokémon on his own. His tail would burn brighter, and would be tough enough to be used as a blunt weapon independent of its fiery properties.
"No idea," Josh responded, though he wasn't being completely truthful. It had taken him a little less than a month for him to get from level one to level three. At the rate he was going... it would take him another two months to become a Charmeleon. The rate of experience gain was awfully slow. It was almost as bad as those Korean MMOs from the early to mid 2000s, expecting their players to play well over a decade to get to max level.

Hearing rustling in the tall grass, Josh's Rufflet zipped toward the source of the noise in a blindingly fast AERIAL ACE too fast to brace against. Had it been any other opponent, the bird would have downed it easily. An avian screech, followed by the crackling of electricity, meant only one thing: Slider had picked the wrong foe to tussle with. Though the swift attack chased the Mareep away, the THUNDER WAVE from its wool badly ruffled the bird's feathers, leaving him breathing heavily.
Though he and his young bird were both frustrated, the stubborn Rufflet still had fight in him, bound and determined to see the night through until he got Josh his wish. Josh himself, though, was worried for his young, feathered friend. "We really should think about turning in soon," he cautioned, the Steppes now only lit by the full moon.

With another loud squawk, Slider fell out of the air, collapsing in a heap just outside the tall grass. Having seen enough, Josh withdrew his Pokémon before sending out Ulysses, his Seel, to quash his fire with a gust of ICY WIND. While it wasn't the most effective tool he had to put out the fire, it was the only one he had, and the dirt surrounding the brush would keep the flames from spreading further.
With his light and heat source gone, the blonde entered his tent and zipped its entrance shut. He let the tendrils of sleep claim him, ready to wake up the next day with refreshed Pokémon that could once again fight. Little did he know that sleep was not the remedy for battered and bruised Pokémon; only the healing capabilities of a nearby Shrine would patch him and his bruised team up.

Back in the saddle after his return from the nearby Pokémon Center, Josh refused to come back to town empty-handed. He rode Granmarg to where his tent had been set up, trusting his remaining Pokémon to watch it. Everything was still intact, thank the Great One. He would keep the tent up for the time being, ready to hide inside it if he needed to take cover after a brutal battle.
Another Mareep encroached on Josh's camp, but he was prepared this time, fearlessly spurring Granmarg into a gallop. The ground-type rammed and trampled the electric sheep with his HIGH HORSEPOWER, showing the slower wild who was the king of this hill. He was about ready to use an in-game app to keep track of the number of spawns that had not yielded the desired Pokémon. He had some patience, but it was starting to grow thin. Plus, his stomach was grumbling. He had not eaten for around eighteen hours. If this dance continued much longer, his stomach would force the issue for him.

With time no longer being a direct issue, Josh could continue his hunt indefinitely... or at least, until his stomach demanded he returned to Briarbane. He was used to it in the real world; once per month as part of maintaining his weight, Josh performed a 24-hour water-only fast. This was more difficult, though; he was never awake at the end of his fast, typically sleeping through the last seven to eight hours of it. Here, he was wide awake. His reactions were already growing sluggish.
Josh set a time limit for himself; it he didn't get his Ponyta by high noon, he would head back to Briarbane. His favorite saloon was going to get quite an order, enough to feed him and his Pokémon. It wouldn't be cheap, but they deserved it after the hellish march he had inadvertently put them all through.

"So, explain to me why we're coming out to a place which we're told is a fairly more dangerous area?" Tikani asked with a concerned expression.
"Because we're just looking for something a bit more common. No luck near the settlement after all. Should be in, get what we're looking for real quick so you have support for later, and out within a matter of minutes at most. Nowhere near long enough for the particularly scary things to pop out and ruin our day." Alicia answered back as she kept an eye on the surroundings. Of course, they were promptly interrupted by a particularly loud roar that grated a bit like grinding steel. Gardener and Pokemon both looked over in shock, eyes wide as a sizable beast she couldn't immediately identify made it's presence known.
"Oh Arceus, don't humans have a saying for things like this!?" Tikani squeaked, eyes wide. "So much for 'in and out'! ... What are you doing...?"
"We do actually. A couple. I think the fitting one is 'speak of the devil'." Alicia noted as she made her way towards the angry possibly-dragon Pokemon. She could've sworn she'd seen a flash of something. "That is Josh! Come on, Tikani!"
"Hey, I'm all for jumping at the chance to help a friend out, but we're a little out of our league here!" The Chikorita was not fancying the train of thought her partner had in mind at the moment.
"I'm aiming to be a hero. And a hero doesn't back down, no matter how bad the odds look!" Alicia insisted with a smile she hoped was confident, but probably came off arrogant.
"Was afraid you were going to say that... Technically I'm doing the 'hero' thing here but alright. Your fault if he was planning on running and then feels like he has to stay to save us now." Tikani noted as she jumped off Alicia's shoulder. The Gardener grinned as the two moved in to face the beast. And the leaf on Tikani's head glowed a soft rainbow as she whipped it forward, letting a set Magical Leaves fly and triggering a system message on Josh's side that showed he wasn't going to be alone on this one, one way or another.

As a Duraludon caught Josh off guard, one that would not let his Mudsdale get away unharmed so easily, a message flashed on the top of his UI:
Information> Alicia Westfield has joined your party.
As much as Josh appreciated the newcomer's help, the timing could not have been worse. He had learned that the Duraludon that he had fiercely fought alongside Silvermoon was the most difficult random encounter in the game before patch 2.0. Thankfully this time, he had the HP and levels to not only be able to take this dragon down, but to keep his newfound friend safe.
"Wasn't expecting to run into you out here," Josh said upon noticing both the message and his acquaintance's presence. "Apparently these Duraludon are a hot commodity; you can trade them for just about any other random encounter Pokémon you want." Especially with a ground-type, he could make short work of the metallic dragon... or so he hoped.
Information> Combat mode activated.
Combat Log> Granmarg readies Bulldoze.
The rider slid down from his steed to let the stout Mudsdale do the fighting. Still lacking the stamina to use his strongest attacks, he would go for his second strongest. With great courage, he galloped toward the metallic dragon in an effort to BULLDOZE through it. Alicia Westfield

”Wasn’t expecting to be out here long enough to bump into anyone. Let alone meet up with Tall, Blocky, and Shiny there.” Alicia shot back in short order, wincing as she caught Tikani in her arms when the little Chikorita was blasted back by the Duraludon’s counter attack. It was a good thing that moves could only be Super Effective or neutral on UNOVR, otherwise she would’ve been dead weight in this encounter. Alicia huffed a bit, before grinning as Granmarg gave the armored dragon what for with that Bulldoze, shoving the beast back and knocking it off balance enough that it could not effectively counter back.
And then what Josh said made Alicia smirk. ”I’ll keep that in mind. But if we get this beast? I’m keeping mine.”
”If you go after another one, you better have another Pokemon do the fighting! This is not my idea of an exciting battle!” Tikani chattered back, and Alicia let out a small apologetic chuckle.
”Try and use it’s own power against it. You have Reflect.”
”… Worth trying.” Tikani admitted, setting up the Psychic move.

Combat Log> Tikani readies Reflect. Combat Log> Tikani's defense improved! Combat Log> Granmarg's defense improved!
The Mudsdale's attacks hit hard, but they were slow to get going, and were stamina-intensive for him to use. One Bulldoze was all the Pokémon had in him before becoming no more than a meat shield. Withdrawing the horse to save his strength for the ride back to the settlement, Josh hurled Ulysses the Seel toward the dragon, who was quick to rake the aquatic Pokémon's back.
Combat Log> Duraludon readies Metal Claw. Combat Log> Ulysses readies Ice Shard.
It was a good thing that Ulysses had not evolved yet, or that Steel-type attack would have been unpleasant! Letting out a grunt, the white, thick-skinned Pokémon stuck his tongue out at the water-type, a volley of ice missiles flying toward its body. If even one of those found a gap in the foe's metal plating, it was going to sting. "Alicia, stay behind Ulysses as much as possible," Josh warned. "Don't want you caught up in his Icy Wind." Alicia winced at the horrendous timing. The Reflect could’ve helped Granmarg endure counterattacks as well, but with the timing of the switch out Ulysses didn’t have that bonus. The gleaming slice of the Duraludon’s claws took a noticeable chunk out of the aquatic’s HP, and the location meant the Seel wouldn’t be very mobile.
Josh’s team… appeared to be in worse condition than she first anticipated. If Granmarg was out of stamina and Ulysses was his best recourse... ”Right. But if push comes to shove, you bail alright? I can get out of here my own way if it gets too hot. And Tikani has Synthesis so she’s more sturdy then she looks.”
Tikani decided to not comment, channeling energy into the leaf on her head again.
> Tikani readies Magical Leaf
It was pretty much the best attack she had available, but unless she could find, or put, some chinks in the dragon’s armored body this was gonna go south real quick.

Though Ulysses was not mobile, neither would the Duraludon after he was done with it. He stuck his tongue out at the metallic dragon, ready to coat its body in frost to discourage it from raking over his back with another claw swipe.
Combat Log> Duraludon readies Metal Claw. Combat Log> Ulysses readies Icy Wind.
"I know better than to fight a losing battle," Josh confirmed his intentions as the ice-type and steel-type attacks clashed, already leaving Ulysses in poor shape. If anything, he was impressed at how much more prepared Alicia was than he was; perhaps it would be worth investing the BYTES into another tier of moves to get access to Aqua Ring for healing. "We're not losing this, though. Keep pushing!" Alicia Westfield

“I figured, but better to be on the same page, am I right?” Alicia shot back with a grin. And then there was the metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel. While Ulysses was certainly reeling from the additional Metal Claw, the Duraludon was definitely the one worse off from that trade. “Whoo! Nice shot Ulysses!”“Finally, some good flipping damage on this thing. I feel a bit useless, but if we win I really don’t care.” Tikani grimaced out after feeling a particularly painful hit earlier. “Your time will come soon enough, Tikani! Just bare with me for a while longer, okay?” Alicia called to her starter, feeling a bit bad. This was oddly rough on her end, it felt like. Maybe she was just having some awful luck. … It wouldn’t be the first time. So many games had RNG components. Like that one game with far too many wyvern types. Alicia loved it, but some of those varieties just did not count as wyverns, strictly speaking. But pretty much everything in end game required rare drops and she could swear the RNG was cursed there. How many times did someone have to fight the same- > Tikani readies Reflect“Well someone’s off in the dream world, so I guess I’m left on my own here.” Tikani grumbled, eyes half closed in annoyance as she moved to support Ulysses with some extra defense. The Seel was doing the heavy lifting right now after all. She’d seen that look on Alicia’s face once before already and knew it would be a headache to get her to pay attention again. And even if they did snap her out of it, her spooked yelp would probably attract more trouble. Josh Devlin

Josh's vision briefly flashed white, an indicator of Ulysses' CRITICAL HIT. While it was not big enough of a hit for the red numerals to grow to the next size, it was still satisfying to see such a large number. He felt bad for Tikani, able to hear her whining; this was a dreadful matchup for the Chikorita.
Combat Log> Ulysses' defense improved! Combat Log> Duraludon readies Metal Claw.
Josh flashed a pleasant smile at seeing the UI properly account for apostrophe placement in the combat logs. Very few games did so; perhaps it was advancements in AI that led to the grammatically correct text. It was a mere distraction, Ulysses awaiting Josh's command as the Duraludon trudged toward his precious water-type, continuing to rake with its METAL CLAW. Did it even know any other attacks?
Combat Log> Ulysses readies Headbutt.
The cold wind had made the dragon's metal skin brittle, leaving it vulnerable to a HEADBUTT from the Seel's horn. As the dragon slashed from above, Ulysses slammed his head into it from beneath. Both of those blows looked like they would sting. Bad.

Alicia shook her head and refocused upon seeing the glimmering barrier appear around Ulysses to armor him up against the incoming attack. Right! Big battle! Very important! ”I’m sorry!” she cried out in distress, more than a little embarrassed she’d let herself go on a mental tangent.
The Seel and the Duraludon made to clash Headbutt against Metal Claw. But Tikani’s forethought proved incredible. Ulysses scored a solid hit with his horn busting the steel armor. But Tikani’s reflect blunted the Metal Claw to an immense degree. The exhausted dragon managed to shove through the barrier on weight alone, but by that point all the power it had built up in the swing was erased. The incoming damage was that of a Scratch from a newborn rather than the Metal Claw of a mighty dragon.
”Synthesis, Tikani! It looks like it’s on the ropes, it’d be embarrassing to flounder now!”
”My thoughts exactly.” Tikani commented as she pulled away from the clash to focus on healing herself. The beast had been able to send some more basic attacks her way still after all. Though it’d been focusing on Josh’s aquatic Pokemon.
> Tikani readies Synthesis > Tikani recovered HP
Alicia grinned and reached back to put a hand on her Pokeball, excited to add a new member to the team soon.

Synthesis was quite the useful move, but it had one drawback: it only worked on the user. Part of the reason Josh went after a Seel in the arena was to have access to a targeted healing move. It would be very helpful for not only future arena battles, but instances where they were out in the wilderness.
The Headbutt had dazed the dragon long enough that it could no longer remain standing, sending scorched dirt flying around it with a loud thud. Seeing Alicia ready her Golden Poké Ball, Josh did with his as well. Though he had no desire for the dragon-type in his team, it was a hot commodity on the trade market. It might be able to save him a lot of legwork to get a Ponyta down the line.
Once the battle was over, Josh sighed deeply. "Thank you. Really appreciate the help. I dunno about you, but I could use a bath. I've been out here since yesterday afternoon."
