After the mess that was catching the Purrloin, Josh needed a rest. After the dark-type kitten appeared in his PC, he returned to the Firewater Saloon for some good food and a friendly game of Spades. No gambling this time; he didn't want to have to deal with the stress of making difficult decisions for piles of chips. It would just be a way to relax and build camaraderie with other patrons there before logging out for the day.
The following day, after a rough shift due to being asked to help out on the phone lines almost all day due to high call volume, Josh logged back in and noticed Altair was online. Riding to the western gate of Briarbane from the somewhat distant Thunderfall Shrine, he sent his new friend a direct message:
DIRECT MESSAGE> Hey Altair, I'm just outside the west gate, not far from Mythstar's base. We still checking out this Gnarled Root Dungeon today?

He was in the middle of a ‘sparring session’ between two of his avians—in fact the only avians he had (Pidove & Rufflet) when he saw he had a new ‘Link Shell’ message (private message for non-Eorzeans) waiting for him.
Popping the notification open, he would read it over and then realize that… oh, right!
The screen hovered in front of him a few minutes; while his Greninja, Hanzo, kept an eye on the two rowdy Flying-types while he composed the message. Several minutes of indecision later, he would finally manage to send a reply:
‘Hey, you’re on rather late. Something came up offline? Don’t worry, Sidra’s on cat duty today so I have a lot of time to kill. Where’ll I find you?’
And off the message was sent.

The reply didn't take too long; it seemed Altair was doing some kind of idle activity, or was in the middle of a mini-game. Maybe he was playing poker in the Firewater Saloon or something? Regardless, it was a pleasant surprise to get such a speedy answer. Typing up his message from aboard Raiden, he gave the bird-lover an equally expedient answer:
DIRECT MESSAGE> Rather tell you in person. Like I said, I'm outside Briarbane's west gate right now. I'm riding a Zebstrika. Not hard to miss. Don't want to go too far without you, cause the Instance is pretty far from town. What's your ETA?
A bit snippier than his normal tone over text, no doubt because of difficult callers... While the Rufflet and the Pidove were sparring (more like throwing insults at each other while flapping their wings at each other’s faces) the Greninja would sigh and smack a palm to his forehead.
‘They’re getting too rowdy again, shall I step in?’ he heard the Greninja ask him while he was contemplating the message that was waiting for him.
“Yes, please, Hanzo. I’ve got this message to reply to so I’ll be a bit,” and he turned his attention back to the message waiting for him in the Link Shell.
‘Give me like, five to ten minutes. Two of my Pokémon are in the middle of a short sparring match, have to get them settled so we can make the journey there,’ he would type in; several changes later he deemed the message to be satisfactory.
And off the message went.

Reasonable; Josh needed to have his Pokémon spar a little more. He couldn't do it now, though. He had to save as much energy as possible. Just because the dungeon was low level didn't mean he could slack and waste resources.
DIRECT MESSAGE> Noted. Maybe we should brawl at the Arena sometime soon. See you in a few.
With a few minutes to spare, Josh clicked open Goroh's Poké Ball and watched the excited Cyclizar perform wheelies on the open road. One day, soon, he would be in the dragon-type's seat. Perhaps after returning from the Gnarled Root, he would be level ten and be able to saddle up the Paldean dragon. Approximately nine minutes and twenty-seven seconds (or so) later…
“Hey, I’m here!” he would call out, accompanied by the Greninja who’d decided to walk for the duration of the trip. The two squabbling avians were nowhere to be seen; having been shoved back into their Pokéballs.
(Someday, he would manage to get through to the Rufflet. But today wasn’t going to be that day, apparently.)
The Greninja would tilt his head in greeting towards the other human’s direction; before standing off to one side like a sentinel.
“So… what’re we going to do in the dungeon, asides from me trying not to climb the trees?” he would crack a few moments later.
Thankfully he’d gotten some of those other badly-needed upgrades unlocked; how much more would he need to completely unlock all the rest?
(A lot of money.)

On the tail end of that ten-minute estimate, the cavalry had arrived. "Hi there, Altair!" Josh waved to both the Greninja and the trainer. "Glad you could make it. Mostly I just wanted to get to know you and our Pokémon better through a nice, easy Instance. We're actually overleveled for it. Should be relaxing. Besides that, the usual. XP and treasure. You never know what you might find in here. Look what we found in Sector Jarzick after all, on top of the pile of XP that Invasive Species was worth."
Once the two were ready, Josh content to keep pace with Altair as they headed westward toward the Gnarled Root, he would make good on his promise. "I don't know if I told you this, but I work remote, normally doing emails. They were apparently so busy that they had to pull me off emails and put me on the phone. And I dunno about you, but I can't stand talking to thick idiots."

Moment his companion brought up the ‘Jarzick’ quest they’d recently finished, he let out a low whistle.
“Don’t know about you, but that thing was a fucking mess. What the hell even was that wiry thing we fought? And how the fuck did it bypass Ground-type immunity?!” he would add with a little hint of a growl.
At least today’s video was going to be something much simpler—hopefully no boss spawns! Otherwise whatever came screaming out of there would… would be on the receiving end of an angry Greninja’s attacks.
He then cackled at the other’s job while not online.
“Oh, god. Don’t get me started on the Karens and Kyles. They’re a dime a dozen. Especially when their orders are cold when I drop them off. I’m on the UberEats side of things. Couldn’t really stick the landing on corporate…” he would add; while the Greninja followed them in the rearguard position.

The whistle got Josh's full attention as he rode toward their destination, making sure Altair could keep up regardless of his mode of transportation. "Never seen it before, but it was terrifying. An electric-type that can use Power Whip is scary stuff," Josh remarked. "I don't think I'd want one. I doubt the game would even let you mount one at all, if you could even find a place to strap a saddle to such a strange creature." His second point was even more puzzling. "Probably a boss thing. Z-Moves, from what I understand, don't bypass immunity like that."
Josh frowned when he mentioned UberEats. "I haven't worked an in-person job for over four years," he revealed as Altair related his own job's woes. "Being remote saves so much on gas money, and we even get reimbursed for our internet bill based on how many hours we work. For a 40 hour week, it's about a quarter of our bill."
The conversation would meander until the duo had reached their destination, an error message popping up as Josh reached the red zone line:
Error> You must dismount from your Pokémon to proceed.
"What do you mean, I have to get off my Pokémon?" the scout whined. "I'm tired of not being able to ride in Instances. First Jarzick, then the Wing Dungeon, now here?" Reluctantly, he slid off his Pokémon's back, the zone line turning blue. As he stepped through the loading zone, a calligraphic title drew itself on the center of his UI:
LEVEL-1: Gnarled Root Dungeon
A mini-map would appear in the corner of Josh's UI, as well as Altair's if his settings were similar. The decor suggested that the duo were on the inside of a colossal tree's root system, dimly lit by out-of-place seeming wall and box torches. As he led the way through the entry hall, were Altair to follow him, a wooden slab would seal the room from behind them. The only traditional door was to their left, and it was locked and chained. All three other cardinal directions were locked. "There's a puzzle in this room. Do you see anything out of place?" he asked, four roots sticking out of the floor roughly halfway between its center and each corner.

“Well ain’t you the lucky one,” he would chirp.
“As I said—corporate wasn’t for me, retail was definitely out of the question due to mental health related reasons… so I ended up sticking with food delivery. Still kind of customer service, but at least I have my own bike to get around New York, so. Saves on leg day and a lot of gas fare as it is.”
He would continue mulling over the ‘Jarzick incident’, which would solidify his own stance on how he wanted to build his in-game skill trees.
“You know. If we’re going to end up working pretty frequently, I’m going to have to get the Revive skill at some point. If that’s between you, me, and Alicia that is. I mean, someone needs to have access to that skill to prevent wipe-outs in the future.”
It wouldn’t take too long before they would arrive at the dungeon proper; him smirking just a little bit when his companion was forced to dismount.
“Look, not everything needs you to be riding on the back of a Pokémon,” he would chime in quietly before they were warped to the dungeon ‘entrance proper’.
Once they’d gone through the entrance and had the way they came sealed behind them, he snorted.
“Typical, lock us in until we’re done. Anyway.”
The Greninja would adjust his own view in the darkened room; before pointing at the certain oddity in the room they were in.
‘Look for a keyhole somewhere nearby; or anything that looks out of place that may lead to a place where we can find a key is what I’ll first advise,’ the frog Pokémon would hum.

The oddity the frog Pokémon could see was obvious to him, but not to Josh... until he pointed it out. There was an indentation near the root closest to the northeast. Pulling on it, it stretched toward the corner of the woody, dirt-covered chamber. A curious jingle played as all three shutters opened. "Simple enough."
Poking his head inside the room to the north, Josh stepped inside, only to find the ghost of an elderly man standing between two box torches keeping the interior of the petrified tree lit. A subtitle would appear on the bottom of both their HUDs:
NORTHERNMOST PENNINSULA IS THE SECRET.
Josh rolled his eyes at the typographical error and the brevity of the message. "Altair , are we playing a Pokémon game or a Zelda game? Sometimes I wonder. Don't get me wrong, Zelda is my second favorite series next to Pokémon, but this wasn't what I was expecting when I came in here."
With their newly-discovered information at the center of his mind, Josh headed back to the room with the four roots, pushing the same one aside to re-open the doors. Were Altair to follow him to the east, both of them would be locked in another woody chamber with a low ceiling. Pokémon larger than a tall human might have trouble maneuvering about. As if on cue, three Bramblin began bouncing about the chamber, having enough angle control to try to stab Josh, Altair, and their Pokémon with their thorny bodies!

The way the misspelling ticked him off wouldn’t stop bothering him; although with an error like that it was pretty obvious that it meant something.
“Wait… whoa, hey, wait up!” he would bark as the other had gone on ahead of him. The Greninja would immediately tail them as they went into the new room—but not before the strange Pokémon that looked like living, sentient thorns would start attacking them!
‘Whoa!’ the Greninja yelped as sudden Water Shuriken burst out from the bipedal amphibian’s direction; aiming to try and cut down the living bramble balls.

Having seen the spindly Pokémon before, Josh knew they were grass Pokémon. Though the powerful WATER SHURIKEN kept them at bay by virtue of the attack being strong, it simply redirected their angle of attack... off two walls and back toward the scout. "Flying-type attacks!" he urged his partner, sending out his Charmeleon to attack their weak points. "Ares, EMBER!" The flame-tailed lizard grabbed his tail and lashed it toward one of the foes, incinerating it in a single volley. One bowled toward Ares and the other toward the water-type.
If Altair was able to handle his Bramblin, perhaps with something other than a water attack for maximum effectiveness, the shutter they entered from would open, and the clink of a SMALL KEY would echo from the center of the room. "I think this will get us in the west door," Josh assumed aloud as he picked up the metallic object. To the north were a pair of box torches that flanked another shuttered door. "See if you can light these, Ares!" With a nod, the Charmeleon whipped his tail toward the center of one. It briefly caught alight, though the flames petered out quickly. "Probably not strong enough. If this is a Zelda-style dungeon, I bet we'll find some item that will light them."
Opening the lock to the west, Josh saw a treasure chest in the open. Ares and the scout jogged up to it and creaked it open. While its contents were not required to progress, it would most certainly be helpful.
Information> You got the DUNGEON MAP! View it in the Dungeon Menu. The dark rooms are the ones you haven't been to yet.
"Would you look at this," the young man whistled. "Pretty big place. Given our levels, though, it should just be about the puzzle--"
A whistle of something falling overpowered the game's other sound effects as four Ferroseed fell around the chest, filling Ares with SPIKES. Had he pursued the BOLTER class any sooner, those spikes would have hit Josh, too!

“Switch!” he would yell; and just as the Greninja was about to open fire with another volley of Water Shuriken the amphibian changed their mind and waited until the very last second for the Bramblin to come screaming too close for comfort before switching to a point-blank Aerial Ace and catching it by surprise instead.
In short order, the annoying ‘wrecking balls’ were dealt with, and he would follow the other and notice the flashing alert that there was a ‘map’ of some kind now in their possession, which was handy and all.
…he would walk in just in time to see the Charmeleon get… quite literally ‘pincushioned’ by four Ferroseed…
“Yikes,” he hissed, flinching at the moment of impact. Was it time to switch to distance moves?
“Okay, okay, how do we figure this out…” he hummed, recalling the Greninja and then summoning Qu the Pidove.
‘Aye, what’s up?’
“Kind of need your help… think you can take care of those?” he would point at the spiky ‘bowling balls’.
‘Yeah, let me try!’
Without further ado, the Pidove would then use Air Slash in an attempt to either cut down the Ferroseed—or shove them out of the way, whichever worked!
(Just his luck he didn’t have a single Fire-type on him yet…)

The fire-type and flying-type attacks reduced the Ferroseed to cinders, though their SPIKES left the Charmeleon lower on health than Josh would have cared for. Thankfully, it wasn't low enough to trigger an aural low health alert. He had heard that low health warning during another adventure, and it was a little too attention-grabbing. "Wonder if I can use Metroid Prime's low health sound in-game with a setting or even a mod. It's just loud enough to make you aware your health is low, but not loud enough to drown out other sounds."
Playing a high-pitched beep three times per second was not the correct way to alert the player that they were in danger of dying.
When he saw Ares taking a knee, Josh withdrew the fire-type in favor of Slider, a Rufflet that rested on the young scout's head. "You have a support Pokémon that can patch up Ares?" he asked Altair as he walked through the northern passage and to a curious sight: a giant root that led underground. He could feel suction coming from its edges. Dropping a leaf into the exposed root, it disappeared down the tunnel like dirt through a vacuum cleaner.
"Seems like this will take us beyond that shutter blocking our path," Josh pointed north. "And those box torches are just like the ones from the other side of the dungeon. We'll have to remember to come back here once we have the tool that lets us light them." Without confirming their destination, Josh slid down the giant, hollow root, a powerful current picking up him and hurling him out its exit in another room.
"Phew!" Josh exhaled. "What a ride - even by my standards, that's fast!" As he looked around, the scout and his Rufflet saw brambled vines whirling in the new room's west corners. There was also a natural ramp leading to the upper level, where they would be able to view the root maze they had just traversed.
