Maybe it was a good thing that he dealt with distance attackers—those spikes from the Ferroseed looked absolutely nasty when they embedded themselves in a Pokémon.
Once the little threat had been done and dusted, he would turn to his companion.
“As a matter of fact, I do,” he would remark, gesturing to the Pidove that had decided to take a fancy and nest in his hair like the idiot that he was.
‘Yeah, where’s your companion? I can patch ‘em up,’ the dual-type would chirp, before wiggling around a little bit and getting settled in his hair.
Before he could ask any further questions, they arrived at a part of the dungeon where there was seemingly no way out except for the—
“Hey! What the hell! Are you nuts?!” he would call down the chute before his Pidove chirped.
‘Yeah, well, guess I’m healing their Charmeleon later.’
“Pretty much.”
With some trepidation, he would follow the other down the chute—the Pidove hanging on for deer fucking life as they hit the twists and turns before—
“Incoming!” he would yell as the chute petered out; hoping that he didn’t crash into his companion on the way out! Ouch!

Josh stepped out of the way as he heard Altair 's voice echoing from beyond the chute, which had ejected him and his active Pokémon with equal violence. "Whew, that's fun!" the scout exhaled, letting his heartbeat calm down. "I could go back and forth on that thing for a while!"
"I thought we were here to... level up a bunch," Ares huffed, the impatient Charmeleon wandering to the west... wholly unaware of the brambled vines whirling in the corners. As he crossed their paths, they flung themselves toward the fire-type, the Pokémon able to step back just in time to watch them writhe in front of him. Ares' arms and head hung low, hyperventilating.
"You can't just go running off like that!" Josh scolded his partner, Slider baiting the thorned plants one more time so all three could cross to the west -- as could Altair , with good timing.
Were he follow, the duo would be greeted with a root maze to navigate, a treasure chest gleaming from its northwest corner. "Wonder what's inside? Another key, maybe?" he mused, letting his starter Pokémon catch his breath before proceeding. Ares was his only fire Pokémon in a dungeon full of grass-types. He couldn't let him faint!

Thankfully the other had gotten out of the way just in time because he would come crashing out of the chute, as he’d fallen from a great height and boy, did his ass hurt on landing!
‘Ah! There he is!’ the Pidove would chirp, getting out of his hair and immediately flying towards the Charmeleon and healing up the hot-headed Fire-type.
‘Feel better there?’ the pigeon Pokémon would ask the Fire-type once he was done with his ministrations while Altair got up off his ass and dusted himself down.
‘Oy, be careful!’ he would chastise the Charmeleon who’d rushed on ahead like the big dumbass that he was. ‘Wait for my human to catch up!’ he would chirp angrily.
With some timing, he would manage to cross the next obstacle—thankfully without much incident—and the Pidove would nestle himself back in his hair once he’d caught up with the other half of the party.
“Either that has a key, or a… wait, we already have a map, right?” he would backtrack and confirm with the other before realizing that… a treasure chest out in the open surely meant that it was potentially rigged to either, explode or be a mimic or something!

The chest did look suspicious. While it was somewhat out in the open, it did require solving a rudimentary puzzle to access. A maze of exposed roots, and how they all seemed loose, reminded Josh of block-pushing puzzles from a highly popular action-adventure series. Only this one was rigged to be impossible to fail. It was just a matter of trial and error, figuring out which root-blocks could be pushed in which directions. "Simple enough," the young man exhaled, rubbing his hands as he grabbed the bottom of the chest's lid. Creaking it open, he discovered...
Information> You obtained two clumps of [tangent=Consuming one of these will partially unlock the CHARMER subclass!]ROSELI BERRIES[/tangent]! Those who consume them shall receive a fairy's boon! Gone after one use.
...not what he was expecting.
"That's nice to find, but it's not a key," Josh noted aloud with a dejected sigh as he returned to the previous room. "Altair, did you find anything else going east of here?" Were he to have been paying attention, he would have remembered a lever and another treasure chest up there...! “What’d you find?” he called, while the Pidove continued to fuss at the hot-headed Charmeleon and continued patching up the other Pokémon as the other explorer returned; however there was this momentarily-unreadable look on their face before the sigh of dejection alerted him that the treasure chest the other had opened wasn’t exactly one they wanted to discover.
He would look in the opposite direction, before turning and heading east to double-check again.
It wouldn’t take too long before he would yell from the other direction, “There’s something here! Though… with a lever? It most likely smells of a trap.”
There was something else, too…
“But see here’s the thing. There’s another treasure chest over here, so. I can yank on the lever since you already got the treasure chest over there,” he offered.

Checking his map as Altair suggested they split up duties made Josh raise his eyebrows. "There's another one there, too," he pointed out. "But I can still grab it." Josh withdrew his injured Charmeleon for his Rufflet, Slider, the flying-type baiting the bramble traps so his trainer could cross safely.
Ascending to the upper level, Josh felt his momentum deaden as the next part of the room loaded into place - was this a "screen transition"? It felt a bit odd; he had never run into this in UNOVR's overworld. Shrugging, he walked over to the wide-open treasure chest, keeping an eye on the many moth Pokémon flapping their wings above the root maze. He opened the lid, its hinges creaking to reveal a COMPASS.
Information> You obtained the COMPASS! Now you can see the where treasure chests and the Boss are hidden! This COMPASS has a new feature -- a tone will play when a key is nearby!
Dismissing the message, Josh immediately went into his map subscreen, completely unaware of what Altair was doing. There were still a lot of treasures out there, and no obvious path forward. The path forward had to involve the lever!
If Altair were to throw it, he would see the root maze on the lower level begin to morph, its paths changing...

“Find anything?” he would yell from his current location. The switch just… lay there, wide open, waiting for something to happen, all things considered.
Through their shared party screen, he would get a notification that the other had found a Compass, okay that would make poking around this place a lot easier than it already did.
(Good thing they already had a map, too.)
“Alright, nice find,” he would call down the passageway where the other had gone off to.
“I’m going to flip this switch now, see what the hell it does!” he warned his companion; just in case the other got ideas on exploring another section of the map.
“You want to come back here and check?!” he would follow up a few moments afterward.

After the maze had finished changing, Josh pulled up his map. Sure enough, the changes had been reflected there. "Altair , pull up your map!" the blonde called out. "There's a new way we can go! Hop back into the root that took us here!"
Were he to follow (or let Josh go ahead on his own), one or both of them would emerge on the lower level from where they found the Compass. They appeared to be at the heart of the dungeon, the largest room in terms of width and height. Those who entered would hear a strange tone. It was their Compass indicating that a Key was present somewhere in the room. "There's two chests in here; let's split up and get them both."
For once, Josh would leave the hard work to Altair ; to get to the chest on the upper level, he would need to dodge some bramble traps similar to the ones in the west wing. Thankfully, these were more in the open, and a lot more predictable. Josh, on the other hand, had to fight through a swarm of Woobat that had made their home in the large area. He quickly swapped Slider out for Saber, the scout taking cover to get out of his electric wolf's DISCHARGE.
Though one managed to get a wave of CONFUSION through and leave the quadruped bewildered, there was enough time between waves of them that Josh could easily run back and push the chest's lid open. Inside was not a key, but something equally useful.
Information> You obtained four Bombs!
This place really was inspired by a certain top-down dungeon crawling series, wasn't it? What was next, poking at walls with Ares' claws, one tile at a time?

“Wait, what?!” he would exclaim as he flicked the map open as well—squinting at the squares, he then saw that the icon that denoted the ‘chute’ where they’d come down from had changed directions and—
“Wait for me!” he would yell as he backtracked and followed the blonde down through the newly-discovered location—sliding out not too far from where the other had come out of.
“Whoa, okay, you take care of that, I don’t have a single Electric-type on me! I’ll get that chest over there!” he would point in the direction where… okay, those brambles looked absolutely nasty. He’d have to grin and bear the traps themselves.
…the good thing about this was that they were spaced out, and predictable—nothing a little slicing wind couldn’t take out.
The Pidove sitting in his hair would get to work; cutting down the brambles that were too dangerous for him to traverse safely before proceeding and eventually—
“Hey, I got something!” he would yell in the blonde’s direction as the notification flashed across his screen—which was also going to show up on the other’s screen as well:
“Oh, shit, it’s a one-use item,” he added a few moments later. “So we have to make this one count!”
He would then make his way back to where the other was most likely still being accosted by Woobat—he really needed another element to specialize in, asides from the obvious…
Oh, oh no. Maybe it was going to be this dungeon that would make him pick the fourth ‘element’ he would specialize in, after all…

Josh pumped his fist as he saw the message pop up. While he had not seen a locked door in a while, they knew they wouldn't be stopped by one now. By the time Altair had returned, the Woobat swarm had been handled, though at the cost of a substantial amount of the Manectric's health. That CONFUSION really hit where it hurt.
"It's no sweat, Altair ," Josh reassured the Sky Trainer. "These are always designed so that it's impossible to softlock, even if you use your keys in the most inefficient way possible." With the swarm cleared, he noticed there was a room to the north, but no obvious way there. That is, until a cracked wall caught his eye. He let out a guffaw. "You really can't get any more Zelda than this, can you? What do you think's at the top of this place, a bow and arrow?" he joked, wondering if his friend was old enough to get the reference. The series had drastically changed in the past seven years, after all!
Pulling out one of his four explosives and setting it near the cracked wall, Josh and his Manectric fled a safe distance. "Saber, THUNDER WAVE!" Josh ordered. With a jolt of electricity igniting the explosive powder within, the ballistic weapon detonated with a deafening bang, the weak section of the wall crumbling. A "puzzle solved" jingle even played after the camera panned toward the newly-excavated entrance.
Once the smoke had cleared, Josh scouted the room ahead. It looked like a large maze on the level below, and if the foliage on the walls said anything, they were gonna have to book it; some kind of plant-based trap was within its labyrinthine corridors. "Once we memorize the path, we gotta book it... on foot," he sighed, the "mounting" icon on his HUD still greyed out.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kind of ocarina or master sword somewhere in this place… but then wouldn’t that be far too early in the game,” he would smirk back, wry smile crossing his features.
For yes, he knew that reference despite not having actively played that genre of games… he was reminded of a certain someone who would obsess over the entire series, even asking him to get a copy of the game so they could do multiplayer runs.
Ah, you idiot.
He would then pop out his Pidove, who would immediately start circling around his companion.
“Uh. If you have any Pokémon that need healing, now might be a good time to do that,” he would wisely suggest to his companion. “I have a feeling there’s a boss room somewhere nearby and we might not have time to prepare if we go in guns blazing and all that.”

Embarrassingly, Josh failed to bring a single Support Pokémon with him. He had made his fair share of beginner mistakes, and coming into even a low-level dungeon without one ranked pretty high on the list. "I... don't have one with me..." he sheepishly admitted, withdrawing his team other than Slider the Rufflet. The brazen flying-type fluttered around Josh in a similar fashion to Altair 's Pidove. "Raiden's in good health, and he knows Flame Charge. We should be fine. I'm a bit faster than you, so I'll get the door open if you don't mind handing me your key?"
Provided Altair agreed, Josh would lead the charge. Once they had both passed the south end of the chamber, a bramble vine would grow from behind them at a visible rate, spearing them if they hesitated too long. Thankfully, the path through was linear, every dead-end clearly visible. It was simply a matter of reacting in time.
Once they reached the end, the scout would open the door, only for a screen transition to take them through the now-open entrance. Before them was a large, open space in the root system, decorated with reds and greens alongside the oranges and browns typical of a large tree. "What in the--"
Before he could finish his sentence, both the south and west passages were sealed tightly shut with growth, and a pair of synchronized, feline voices taunted the explorers:
"Mrrrrrow! You cannot pass!"
The two agile Floragato caught Altair in a pincer attack, one armed with a boomerang that looked razor sharp despite it clearly being hewn from grass!

Why did he feel like he was going to eat his words when he mentioned ‘boss room’? Oy.
If it was possible to screech at Golbat-level hearing, he’d have done so already.
“What in the hell were you thinking, man?! Not bringing a single Support Pokémon to this place?!” he exclaimed a few seconds later before the Pidove tsk’d at the blonde.
“First rule of exploring: always have a healer with you!”
He had to resist the urge to put on some make up and act like a clown, the way his companion had literally goofed up a very simple tenet of poking around unknown places.
“You better make this count…” he would huff, passing over the Small Key with some trepidation. He… honestly, as a GNB main who explored Eorzea whenever he wasn’t in this game, it was basic to always either have healing potions or have a WHM companion whenever a Tank-class character went out and drew aggro… oogh.
The screen transition wasn’t missed the moment he caught it flickering on his field of vision—quickly whistling to recall the Pidove back, thankfully he wouldn’t get cleaved due to the nya-warning…
“Really? Right in front of this salad?!” he would yell, pulling out another Pokéball and releasing… Kyouya the Rufflet. Who was still non-verbal, but holy shit on a stick the avianid was pissed at the incoming attack!
Screaming bloody unintelligible murder at the two Grass-types, the Rufflet would flap his wings angrily, before releasing an Air Slash attack towards the closer of the two bipedal felines!
“…yeah, don’t make him fucking angry!” he would chastise the two… wait.
Wait, wait, wait, was this the boss room already?!

The vicious AIR SLASH from Kyouya ravaged one of the Floragato. "Nice shot, Altair !" Josh cheered. The two would reposition themselves, tossing their razorgrass boomerang back and forth between one another in an effort to slide and dice Kyouya. Even Josh's Zebstrika joined in, ramming and trampling the grass-type with FLAME CHARGE after FLAME CHARGE. No matter how much damage they dealt, the grass-type didn't seem to slow down at all.
Shaking his head after another toss of the whirling weapon left Raiden's front legs thumping, Josh recalled the swift horse for his own Rufflet, Slider. "We gotta attack them both!" he urgently suggested to his partner, shifting his attention to the second grass cat. Flapping his tiny wings rapidly, Slider whipped up an AIR SLASH of his own.
Provided he could get Kyouya's help, the duo would take the mini-bosses down. From each one's disappearance would spawn a Ribombee ready to use POLLEN PUFF on one of the heroes' Pokémon. Furthermore, a red, spinning portal appeared in the center of the room right as both its doors opened. Stepping up to its precipice, Josh saw its destination. "Ooh, take a look at this! This is a shortcut back to the entrance!"

“At the same time? Got it!” he would shout from his side of the chamber, before whistling once and pointing in the direction of the two Grass-types.
(Their nya’ing was starting to get to him, and if they didn’t keep quiet he would most likely incinerate them… if he had a Fire-type!)
Unfortunately he did not, so he would be content with cutting them down with a synchronized Air Slash attempt alongside the other Rufflet that would eventually take care of the two Grass-types.
“Honestly, if I had a Fire-type this would’ve been much faster, but this works just as well,” he would hum as the two Pokémon disappeared in a flash of white. That was the problem dealt with, for now.
“You take the Pollen Puff, my companions are mostly okay,” he would hum, offering the healing treat to his companion. “I have healers with me.”
He… was never going to let the other one live this down, wasn’t he? Definitely not!
It wouldn’t take too long before the red portal would appear.
“So, does this mean we’ve completed the entire dungeon?” he would confirm with the other. He was tempted to take the portal back to the entrance, so there was that.
