"...Thank you," Josh replied, handing the POLLEN PUFF to Ares for the Charmeleon to eat. The fire-type quickly snarfed it, green recovery numerals cascading in front of him. "I'm sure he appreciates the pick-me-up."
"I'll appreciate it more when you get a Support of your own on your team," Ares answered in a snarky tone. "We can't do the work all on our own."
Shaking his head, the scout turned his attention back to Altair . "Nope! This is just a shortcut to get around the dungeon quickly. Could be helpful if we need to leave and return." Instead of heading back to the entrance, Josh headed west into the top of the "root", as the map shape seemed to suggest. In the back was a diamond-shaped formation of eight roots that looked very similar to the ones near the dungeon entrance. "It's the far west one," Josh speculated. "This really was inspired by Zelda, wasn't it?" As he pushed on the exposed tree root from the south side, it gave way, a curious melody playing as the camera panned to an underground tunnel where the root was at.
"Even after nearly forty years, some things never change, do they?!" Josh guffawed, exploring the tunnel quickly turning crawlspace. At its end was a pouch that glowed red from the inside. Retrieving it and heading back to the room where the mini-boss was at (or the one above if Altair followed him), he would open the pouch in front of the bird enthusiast, embers flying out of it.
Information> You obtained a pouch of EMBER SEEDS! Rupture one to create a small fireball that can damage enemies and light torches.
The young man scowled upon seeing his newfound treasure the mini-boss was guarding. "And we couldn't have done this with your fire breath because?" he asked Ares.
"Game mechanics. Blame the devs."

“You know, I’m not going to let you live that gaffe down,” he cackled as the Charmeleon literally inhaled the treat in mere moments. “Pretty sure Qu isn’t going to let you live this down, either,” he chuckled as his own Rufflet began picking at a wing feather that was bothering them because it was being an ass.
The avianid would squawk when he realized that he was being stared at, before the white-haired elfin would shake his head affectionately.
“Just… do what you want to, Kyouya,” he would hum as the other would then speculate on the structure of the opening that they’d discovered—at least it would save them a whole lot of walking!
“Hey, be careful!” he would call out to the other, waiting where they stood just in case something did happen and they needed to come in at the last second; support at the ready. Eventually the other would make it back and he would…
“Whoa, hey, be careful opening those around a forest,” he would cackle as he dared to take another look to see how many were inside the pouch, smirking at the banter between his companion and the Fire-type.
Yeah, he would definitely need a lot more secondary (or primary-types, considering how wide the spread of Flying was across all eighteen types) Pokémon that shared other types across his preferred typing load out.
“So, did we find everything in here yet, or are we still missing a few rooms?” he would ask the other as he pulled up the map and took another glance at it.

The pouch was completely filled with red, orange, and yellow seeds; it didn't seem like they would run out any time soon. While he wouldn't be able to use them for anything more than a puzzle-solving tool without equipping himself in a class, Josh was happy to be able to at last get to the rest of the dungeon. "Don't worry about a thing, Altair ," Josh assured the flying-type specialist. "I've got Granmarg's ground-type attacks to snuff the flames out, even if I miss."
As his friend's two birds squawked and chattered back and forth, the scout pulled up the DUNGEON MAP for the two to look at. "If we take the dungeon warp back, it'll be faster than going back the way we came," he deduced, pointing to the unexplored parts of the map. Jumping into the vortex, Josh and his team began to spin around rapidly, his vision fading to white before being ejected from its distant counterpart... at the south side of the root maze. That root maze now led to nowhere, thanks to the work they had done on its far side.
Several crawling enemy Pokémon had respawned and looked ready to attack, though Josh had no intentions of fighting them. Dropping two EMBER SEEDS into the box torches near a mess of roots blocking the way, they burst into flames seconds later. The roots receded into the ground, a curious tone playing as the way to the next room opened up.
Josh stepped inside, expecting a battle on the other side. He was pleasantly surprised to find a treasure chest in the offshoot's center, though he had to walk around some inconveniently-placed pits to get there. Creaking the wooden box open, within the easily-plundered item crate was a golden key, its top end shaped like a Pyroar's head.
Information> You obtained the BOSS KEY! Now you can get into the chamber where the Boss lurks.
"That was a lot easier than I thought," Josh breathed a sigh of relief, happy with hos his team was doing. "Now, let's head back to the east side and see what kind of a boss we're dealing with."

And to think they weren’t even at the boss room yet! How ironic this was.
“Just let me know. I have so much water on me it’s a miracle I haven’t evaporated yet,” he would crack with a dry grin as the other took the lead—with him following not too long afterward. He idly wondered if the boss room was going to be as insane as the other room they’d recently-cleared… you know, the one with the nya-ing Grass-types that very nearly drove him up the wall.
“Come on,” he would whistle in the Rufflet’s direction, before they followed him down the chute and into another room—much as he wanted to take out the Pokémon that had spawned here, they had come for another objective altogether.
“Oh, we haven’t gotten to the boss room yet? Color me surprised,” he remarked once he saw the prompt flash on his screen about the ‘boss room key’ being acquired.
“I hope that boss isn’t going to give us a run for our money,” he continued with a smirk on his face as they then made to follow the other back towards where the boss waited for them to find it, and then—
(For some strange reason he suddenly heard the Cinders playing in his mind. No, this was not Ifrit!)

"Water would be a much easier way to put a stray first out," Josh replied, keeping the Sky Trainer company as the two backtracked to the east wing of the root system. Altair had every right to complain; there was an awful lot of backtracking for a dungeon assigned such a low LEVEL rating.
Josh set a pair of EMBER SEEDS within the box torches, Ares launching precise EMBER shots to ignite them. "If this is the first one, imagine how much more complex the next one will be," he speculated, the seeds exploding like miniature bombs and lighting the two torches. The dense roots covering the opening receded into the floor, letting the two pass into the dungeon's antechamber.
The entire chamber was covered in soft soil; it was almost like walking through sand. After taking but a few steps, ghostly branches -- ones that looked like hands of a Trevenant -- surfaced from beneath the black dirt, floating toward Josh and Altair as they advanced. Well off the beaten path was a lone treasure chest that the young man went for. As he stopped to attempt to kick it open, a hand grabbed him and dragged him beneath the soft ground in a hurry. His Pokémon disappeared in columns of white light, presumably returning to their Poké Balls.
Were Altair to check his map somehow while dodging the hands headed at him, he would see that Josh had reappeared at the dungeon's entrance, and was hoofing it back toward him as quickly as he could...

He didn’t realize that they’d walked into a room that was effectively an entire trap in and on itself—what with the blatantly obvious lone treasure chest that was in the room; and the strangely soft ground that had dead branches… whoa, what the fuck!
“Careful!” he yelped, barely getting out of the way of the gnarly ‘branches’ that had come alive and suddenly grabbed his companion before pulling them underneath into the sand… oh, come on! Was the entire surface quicksand?! He grumbled to himself; but at the same time he hoped the other was alright…
Making sure to avoid the gnarly ‘hands’ that were trying to grab him too, he would make it to the treasure chest; finishing the job the other hadn’t managed to complete earlier.
The moment he’d kicked it open, there were… several things inside it? One of them was a raw [tangent=this item partially unlocks the Ironsmith class!]lump of iron ore[/tangent], which he needed for reasons so he would make a grab for that and drop it into his inventory; while the other was… [tangent=this item partially unlocks the Alchemist class!]five bottles of labelled Salandit poisonous excretions[/tangent].
What the…
Were they going to have to melt some kind of a ‘gelatinous cube’ within this space? Why were there several bottles?
“Hey, Josh?! You back yet?!” he would call out to the open air; waiting for the other to come back so they could split the four remaining bottles—having already slipped one into his own inventory because he knew he needed at least four more different poisonous excretions for something he was planning.

After quite a delay, Josh had at last returned alongside his Zebstrika, the Pokémon awkwardly alternating between a trot and a canted to keep up with the dashing trainer. "Sorry!" the young man apologized. "When I got grabbed by that thing, it warped me back to the dungeon entrance... but at least I didn't lose any HP." He would split the ore and vials of Salandit corrosive as the Sky Trainer agreed. "I don't have Ironsmith unlocked yet, but when I do, I can make a venomous sword out of this."
Keeping at a slightly slower pace to give himself time to react to the hand-like branches popping out of the ground, Josh stopped just long enough to open the door to the north using the golden BOSS KEY. "Let's get in there before these hands grab us again!"
Once both of them were inside, wooden shutters would lock the two of them inside as the in-game music suddenly went silent, and a giant Flapple would descend from above. It was the size of a Colossal Pokémon, and had a nasty horn that could gore either one of them to presumably deal quite a bit of damage. Its wingbeats threatened to blow the two off their feet, Josh taking cover behind Raiden to avoid the rushes of moving air. The dragon-type sounded a low screech that would have been cute if it was higher-pitched and less quiet, the music changing once it had finished bellowing.
"Kill it with ice, Altair!" Josh pointed to their giant foe. "Kill it with ice!"

“Well, that at least is a good thing. Otherwise Qu is never going to let you hear the end of shit,” he cheeked back; because now his Pidove had a very… skewed opinion of the other Trainer because of the little ‘rookie mistake’ the other had made. Whoops.
The good news was that they were already at the boss room itself, so once this was done they would be free. The bad news was…
Well, not so bad news, more like…
“Ice?! Are you kidding me, you think I have any Ice-types on me?!” he exclaimed; before realizing that they could make their way out of this; but it was going to be a very risky move on his part.
“Do you have a Tank ‘mon on you?” he would ask the other; realizing that he had just the answer to the strange, apple-looking Pokémon that had bellowed in their direction.
While he knew it was going to be fucking risky, it was going to be effective—as long as his Pokémon kept their distance!

"I do!" Josh cried, using his ESCAPE Core Ability to quickly withdraw Raiden and get his Rufflet into the fray. "Slider is still new to the squad, but he should be able to take a hit or two! You just need me to draw aggro, right?"
Provided their communication was accurate, Josh would distract the Flapple by having Slider fly in close and swerve toward their foe with a well-placed AERIAL ACE. Its size made it an easy target, but also a tough one, not inflicting nearly as much damage as a flying-type move should have. "It's got high defenses, too - maybe try a special-based attack?" the young man suggested.
The giant wouldn't let its juicy body be ripped to shreds by an eaglet looking for an easy meal. It regurgitated a potent ACID SPRAY from within, blinding the young Rufflet and threatening to splash Josh, Altair 's Pokémon, and even the Sky Trainer himself if he was equipped in a Class!

“Yeah, keep the heat off my companion, because I know sic’ing a Dragon-type on another Dragon-type will end badly unless the fight ends quickly!” he nodded, pulling out the previous Pokémon he had out; before swapping in his sticky little apple of a Dipplin.
Yes, who knew that this strange-looking apple with a ‘stick’ coming out of its head was a Drago-type?! Color him surprised. Maybe the part-Grass typing would protect from the supereffectivity of Dragon-type attacks, but who was he kidding?
“Okay, Hydra! Aim—and fire!” he would point in the direction of the Flapple; before the beginnings of a Syrup Bomb lobbed from the Dipplin’s direction—
“Get your Rufflet out of the way, that’s a Syrup Bomb! You don’t want to know what that’s capable of, since you’re a speedster!” he would warn his companion.
They had to slow down, or at the very least encumber the boss first before he could start laying into it with all the power the Dipplin had within its seemingly tiny little body.
Dipplin is out on the field! Dipplin used Syrup Bomb on the Flapple in an attempt to slow it down!

Combat Log> Colossal Flapple's agility hit rock bottom!
Given the heads up, Josh was able to plan for his Rufflet to be out of the Syrup Bomb's area when it fired. The heavy goop forced the boss to land and prevented it from dropping a nasty Grav Apple upon the small bird. It was far from helpless, though; the boss spread its wings despite being grounded, sending a barrage of LEECH SEEDS flying toward Slider. The Tank's high HP wound up being used against Josh and his partner, the blue numbers cascading in front of the grass-type's model an indicator that much of the Pokémon's hard work is done.
"It's prepared for Tanks, Altair!" Josh cried. "I gotta bring Slider back for DPS!" Without possessing ESCAPE for the Tank class, he would need to take time off keeping his friend safe, putting his Charmeleon in the battle. Ares grabbed his tail once he was in combat. "He's the one Pokémon I have that has dragon attacks but isn't a dragon-type himself!"

“Well, the important thing is that it’s grounded and not going to be doing crazy shit while in the air!” he acknowledged the other; knowing that this may either be a long, drawn-out battle—or a very quick one, all things considered.
While the other swapped back the Rufflet for his Charmeleon, the Dipplin would remain rooted to the spot; trying to pick the best spot where it could take aim and fire—
The barrage of Leech Seeds didn’t go unnoticed by the other, either.
“Duck!” was all the warning he would shout next, as the Dipplin opened fire with a long-range Dragon Pulse aimed at the grounded Flapple, still screeching from its grounded position. Where was the Dragon-type attack going to land—
The explosion of draconic energy would rocket towards the gigantic grounded apple’s body.
Wait, wasn’t that a direct hit?!
Dipplin is out on the field! Dipplin used Dragon Pulse on the Flapple!

Josh did as asked, ducking beneath the ally Dipplin's DRAGON PULSE. He doubted it would hit him, since friendly fire was turned off for the dungeon, but he did so out anyway out of an abundance of caution. The Flapple squealed loudly, cracks appearing in its horn. "That's it! The horn, Ares! That's its weak point!"
"Got it, buddy!" the Charmeleon snapped back before raising his tail burning purple instead of red. Cracking it toward the boss like a whip, a quick burst of DRAGON BREATH flew toward the dragon, getting a second squeal out of it. The enemy's model began to blink red, indicating it was at critical health. "Finish it, Altair !"
Bosses were, of course, at their most dangerous when at low health; from the horn flew a vicious DRAGON PULSE of its own. With no time to brace himself, the wave charred Ares white, causing him to drop in combat. "Ares... thank you..." Josh trailed off as he recalled the fallen fire-type. The dragon-type attack didn't stop, either: it was headed right for the Dipplin, as well!

The moment the Charmeleon had opened fire with his own Dragon Breath, he knew his Dipplin needed time to recharge because—for one thing, the danged thing was immobile.
Pretty much rooted to one spot, which was why he asked the other if he could draw incoming fire because as it was he had a sitting Ducklett of a Pokémon out there right now.
He winced as he saw the Charmeleon’s attack land; but in retaliation the gigantic apple with wings had knocked it out—but that paved the way for his own Dipplin to wrap things up, and fast!
Much as the Flapple wanted to use Dragon Rush, they were pretty much glued to the floor; and even while the other had retaliated with an incoming apple falling from above—a second, concentrated Dragon Pulse from the Dipplin had cut off the Grav Apple from fully materializing and falling on top of the immobile Dipplin’s head!
Another loud screeching noise filled the dungeon, but at the same time there was a—wait, what?! Why was there a sudden burst of light pouring out of his Dipplin, too?!
Dipplin is out on the field! Dipplin used Dragon Pulse once more on the Flapple!

The Flapple's horn shattered upon being struck with the second DRAGON PULSE. All of its projectiles instantly disappeared, the creature sounding a more elongated shriek as it dissolved away in dramatic fashion. As the final pixels dissolved away and the shutters receded. a pair of UI message would interrupt the two momentarily:
Information> Bombs have been removed from your inventory. Information> Seed Satchel has been removed from your inventory.
"Figured we wouldn't be allowed to take these outside the dungeon," Josh huffed, still catching his breath from the boss fight. "Now let's see what's on the other side of this boss room."
The room beyond was completely different, textures like the other Shrines and temples he had seen in UNOVR. It looked more artificial than natural, and especially more colorful. It was dimly lit inside, except for light coming from a floating, bestial horn that was almost too bright to look at directly for too long. Almost. "This... this is it," Josh gasped, approaching the glowing object. The moment he stepped on the first stair leading to the artifact floating above the dais, words echoed in both the players' minds.
"What the chosen one holds in his hand is the first Essence of Courage. Scattered throughout the ruined world are eight. Without their power, defeating the King of Evil will be impossible. The second Essence of Courage rests in the deep woods, in a mine where fairies don't live..."
The object floated into Josh's hands, the young man holding it triumphantly as a fanfare played, interrupting the music that had returned when they defeated the boss.
As Josh held the horn above his head (point toward the ceiling, of course), his and Altair 's vision would slowly fade to white, their other senses suppressed until the light faded. Once they could see and feel again, the duo would find themselves outside the Gnarled Root, the dungeon completely gone. Were they to check their items, they would indeed find their explosives and seed-carrying bag to have vanished.
"Thanks for the help, Altair," Josh gave the Sky Trainer a pat on the back would he allow it. "This has really worn me out. I'm gonna log out and head to bed, I think." With that, the riding enthusiast would disappear into yellow pixels...
