The Church of the Ceaseless Downpour drips in the rain, water pouring off of gutters and worked iron. Lightning reflects from the grimy windows, jagged and asymmetrical. It sits at the top of the hill, the perfect "gothic" lookout over the western-inspired town of Briarbane. The path to its wrought doors is thin and winding. Undertaken by the desperate, the ragged, those yearning for escape-- or forgiveness. One would think the Church must have been built a hundred years ago, a relic of a darker time when the Old Gods ruled. "Hiya, welcome to my church!"It wasn't. Yggy ran out into the rain with an umbrella, anxious to meet the traveler on her doorstep. "Woah, it's raining pretty hard? You okay?" She did a double-take as she reached the stranger. "Hey, you're totally dry! You must be a Swimmer! I mean, a player like me!"The tomboy grinned. "Come on in if you want! I'm the only one here. Wanna see the Library?"

To Glace, there was nothing quite as perfect and comforting as freshly fallen snow.
And nothing quite as unpleasant as freezing rain. It sluiced off the battened hatches, rushed off the tilted roofs, and slicked the streets, chilling the dark cobblestones and coagulating in thick, dirty puddles. The rain fled Glace like snakes from a saint, leaving a chill that made his feet ache. He had no umbrella, nor want for one.
His UI sounded as he reached the foot of the Church steps. A young girl rushed out and greeted him, offering an umbrella. Was she an NPC?
"I'm fine," Glace lied, taking the proffered umbrella. "Totally dry," he agreed, mouth pulled into a youthful smile. "I'd love to see inside. You said it was your church? Did you build it?"

"Yeah, I did! Well, me and my friend did. It's cool, right? I mean, it's creepy, but that's the cool part." Yggy said, leading the other player inside. The doors creaked ominously as they closed. "Do you like that sound effect? It came with the door!"
The pulpit was a mess. Red-rusting stains of old rituals, stumps of wax candles burned into the ground. "Everyone hatches their Kyogres here, but they never clean up. Do you have a Kyogre egg?" Yggy hoped he didn't, and tried to change the subject.
"Oh, I'm Yggy, by the way! That's short for, uh, Ygglybuff! I've been trying to work out lately, at my Guild."

As the young church owner proudly gushed about her creation, Glace felt a genuine smile creep up on him like daylight savings. "I've never done building in game," he confessed. He laid a hand on the thick wood. "Doors like this need many years to get creaky. How efficient."
The church nave was soaked with clandestine energy, the air thick with just-muttered chants. "I do not have Kyogre," Glace said, surprised by the clarity and prevalence of the NA ritual. How many people had the legendary that wasn't even available on EU? He wanted to ask how common hatchings were, but 'Ygglybuff' interrupted with a joke about her name. Above her head, the username Yggy Br00ks was clearly visible in blue text. Perhaps she did not have that username display enabled.
"Then you can call me Glaceon," he replied, pointing up to his username. "What guild are you in?"

"Round 2! They're the best. I was kidding about working out, though. I could just change my avatar's muscles if I really wanted." It was a good thing Cardinal Glace wasn't here to hatch a Kyogre. Yggy had totally fudged hers on Beta Island and had no idea how to do the ritual. "Yeah, nobody has Kyogre eggs anymore," Yggy said, not bothering to hide her relief. She stretched her arms back behind her head, looking out over the dusty pews. "There used to be a cult thing here to Kyogre. But not a real cult? Like, they couldn't do anything bad, everyone just joined because they thought it was fun. And ambiance or whatever." She wiggled her fingers spookily, then let her arms fall back to her sides. "But everyone's gone now. I guess it's been awhile since Beta."A flicker of pixels passed across the tomboy's body, distorting her for a moment. "I still hang out here a lot, though. It's the only place I built during settlement dev, so it's got my name on it. I'm waiting for my dad," she added, then fell silent, as if something had suddenly occurred to her. "Mr. Glaceon, you're not..."

He watched the ripple of pixels cross Ygglybuff's body. "It's not impossible, but I've never knowingly abandoned any child of mine." Glace said. "I have many kids these days. Adopted or found. Reborn into my family."
"A lot of people call me Father, and you're welcome to if it would fill some hole in your heart."

The girl gave a start. Shock and horror washed over her, surprising her with its intensity. Mr. Glaceon had totally misunderstood what she'd been saying! "Woah, wait! He didn't abandon me," she exclaimed, still feeling like icicles were dripping down her back. "Something bad happened! I mean, I don't know it was bad, but definitely something happened. He wouldn't have just left, you know?"
It had been two years.
Her hands were shaking. Yggy didn't know why, so she folded them together, letting them hang in front of her like a limp prayer. "Are you like, a real priest? Is that why people call you Father?"
Would it fill a hole in her heart?
"N-nah, I'm not really religious," Yggy said, trying to laugh. "Anyway, do you wanna see the basement? Speaking of holes, there's like, a really big one in there. It used to be full of water for the Kyogres, but now it's all dried up."

Glace narrowed his eyes, curiosity breaking his demeanor. "Both are common enough tragedies," Glace said. "Children are left alone for one reason or another."
He had begun to read Yggy. First the obvious relief at the lack of Kyogre, apparently this church's patron, and now this outburst at the idea of abandonment. Something had hurt this child deeply. Was Kyogre just another way of talking about her Dad? Did she fear the return of her patron for the truth it might bring? For the sad reality coming home to roost?
Perhaps the fruitless search was anesthesia to self-reflection and reality.
"My place is not to judge, but to balm," Glace said. "I am a priest, and I provide peace to all who need it." He pushed, gently for now, at her refusal. "Peace is not just for the religious. It is natural to want to overcome sad and hurtful events in our pasts."
Glace lowered his voice as he followed Yggy to the basement. He spoke as if he were sharing a secret that his God, or more judgemental ears, would not want to hear. A secret just for Yggy. "It is even more natural to want to focus on something positive for a change. To escape to a happier place. Even the brightest of us get weighed down by too much negativity."

The subject felt immovable. Inescapable, even as Yggy fled down the winding gothic staircase with its drippy wax candles. Without knowing—or perhaps Glace knew very well—he had brought a skeleton to the surface that had been buried in the back of Yggy's closet for a long time.
"No no, it doesn't feel judgy! Don't worry," the tomboy assured Glace as they descended. Her heart beat quickly. He'd just misunderstood, no biggie. "Yeah, I get the thing about hurtful events. Honestly, I was actually really scared of Kyogre for a long time. Some scary stuff kinda happened in Beta, and it felt like it was all Kyogre's fault. It felt like if we kept doing weird cult things at the church, it might come back. I didn't really want that to happen, so I kinda stopped hanging out here."
Since then, they'd found out Kyogre was dead. It was never coming back after all.
Yggy didn't know how to feel about that.
"A happier place! Yeah..." Her bright tone faltered. The dark ambiance of the church's basement, the heart of its power, was stronger than her false positivity. "...no reason to bring everyone down, right? This game's mostly for fun, anyway."

"That sounds like a hard situation to be in," agreed Glace. The drippy candles lit his face from odd angles, obscuring him in asymmetrical shadow. "You don't want them to return because of how much they hurt you in the past, but you've spent so much time and effort trying to show them that you want them back."
Glace reached the bottom step. "I think that happier places are not found, but made. You chose to stop coming here, and in doing so you made your world a little happier."
There was a beat of silence, where the vision of a happier world expanded in Glace's mind like a soap bubble. The dreamy film of his ideal world, of a land filled with rushing wind and floating joy. Of towering pines, heady lavender, and the inevitable fall of the Precipice Shrine.
As the blackness of the basement resolved into night colors, his vision became overlaid on reality. The pines were vast columns carved with washing waves and sea-foam motifs. The lavender was the dull, stone-soaked scent of incense burned long ago. And the Precipice Shrine was a ceremonial hole, so deep and empty of water that the interior was dyed in black.
It was smaller than the original, but it made his gut twist just the same.
Glace's mouth was as dry with anticipation. "Tell me," he said, the words like charcoal on his tongue. "What would it take to make your world a happier place?"

"I think that happier places are not found, but made." Something about what the man had said stuck in Yggy's mind like a beetle in a web, struggling to work its way out. She had made this church—or part of it, anyway. Not the cult part. Just the library part. At the time, Kenny had been picturing something different. A place he could hang out to study outside of school—maybe even meet kids his age, or get (free!) tutoring from people who'd already left high school behind a long time ago. Nothing crazy. But people didn't want to be reminded of school, or midterms, or real life. The more time Yggy spent in the library, the more time she spent alone. People were more interested in atmospheric rituals than geometry, and Yggy didn't blame them. It just... would have been nice. To have a little help. "It was supposed to be a happier place," the tomboy admitted, tone subdued. "But I guess it didn't really work out that way."Wasn't that just UNOVR itself? "I think if I did it again..." Yggy trailed off, eyes wandering across the carved pillars, the dried-up pit where once the glowing Kyogre pool had been, "I'd do something else. Not a library, 'cuz nobody wants to study in-game. Maybe like..." She racked her brains for something funner, cooler. "...a baseball field! Yeah!" Yggy beamed. "There's a basketball court in Briarbane, so why not a baseball field? Wait! Even better! A baseball stadium. Then even if people don't play, they can still all gather around to watch. The crowd's the best part of a ballgame!"The words tumbled out of her mouth as if pushed, an upwelling of inertia built up behind the unstoppable thought that came next. "...I bet my dad would come too! Yeah, he couldn't miss it!"

Bill liked mythology. Not for the comparative religion angle, or the animal-headed stories, but for the parables.
Stories are told to teach us something, and the long-bones tales of dust-gone empires only spread and endure because their lessons are universal and relatable. They tell us human stories, only dressed up as gods and monsters.
Take Sisyphus. Was it a story about a tyrant who cheated the gods and Death? Yes, but when Bill imagined the face of the damned king rolling his boulder up that hill in Tartarus he could just as easily imagine himself in the same situation.
Everyone has a boulder, be it penitence, trauma, or a hard-packed lie. Everyone rolls that boulder.
But the fascinating part was what happened when we set that burden down for a moment. For just as Sisyphus must exhale with relief when he watches his work clatter and scrape back down the mountain, so too do we take a sick relief in seeing how far we pushed our boulder.
In those moments, when we are reflecting on our works and bemoaning those to come, we exhale clear truths, voicing them to ourselves.
And maybe one another.
We all have a boulder. And for some of us it is a missing father.
Bill wondered is Sisyphus had children of his own. Ones that missed their father, now that he was trapped in Tartarus for eternity. Perhaps they understood the relief he chased, and the higher forces preventing his return.
"You will find your father," Glace said, his voice solid as keystone. "Family has a way of gravitating together."
He tried to picture a gargantuan, gothic baseball stadium rising from the suburban sprawl of Briarbane. "He would certainly notice it," Glace agreed. "I'm sure that your father is looking for you too. Have you received any hints about his location?"

"Well, no," said Yggy, then "Well, yes. I mean, this game! UNOVR! My dad bought it for me."
She had never actually told anyone this. Nobody had ever wanted to know.
"So the thing is, he just disappeared one day. My sister and I came home from school and his stuff was missing and he was gone." Yggy warmed to her story—it sounded mysterious, didn't it? Suspicious, even. "He didn't say anything to Mom either, which is the really weird part. If he wanted a divorce or whatever he would have told her, right? At least in a note, or a text or something."
The church had become a confessional. "We waited a few days, but we didn't hear from him. I wanted to tell the police, but Mom wouldn't let me. She said he might get in trouble. I don't get it, but maybe he was mixed up in something weird? But I don't care if he was," Yggy added quickly, a bit defensive. "Like, even if it was drugs or mafia or something, I don't know, he could have told us. So something weird definitely happened."
How had she got on this subject again? Oh! "...anyway, like, a couple months later, I got this package... and it was a WorldScreen! Mom and us, we don't have that much money anymore since she's the only one working, so I thought we should sell it. And she was like 'no, maybe it's a gift from Dad' and I was like... of course!" Yggy mimed bonking herself in the middle of the forehead. "We always played the old Pokemon games together. You know, on DS? So it totally made sense."
There was a slight flicker of pixels across Yggy's avatar, then she continued. "...anyway, I've been playing ever since. I bet he's in here, but we just haven't found each other yet. Maybe he's trying to protect his secret identity or something? I know that sounds crazy, but I don't know what else could be going on."
She was quiet for a moment.
"You're definitely, definitely not him, right? You'd tell me, Mr. Glaceon? Or like, give me a signal?"
The teen looked down at the ground. "It's just, nobody else's ever asked about my dad before."
Like geometry, like history, family was something people didn't talk about here.

Glace hated putting words in people's mouths. And he had no intention of pulling them out, either.
He cultivated an aura of safety, non-judgement, and heartfelt confession, and it did wonders. People would often come to him to tell him about problems or wishes or little things that dug in their mind like thorns.
The funny thing about confessions is often they come as a surprise to everyone involved.
As Yggy's words filled the empty church with enough confession for a congregation, Glace felt a growing suspicion fill his gut like swallowed ice. His mother bought this game. Perhaps he was wrong, and Yggy's father was out there in the wilds, sending an extravagant, wordless gift to his child by way of an apology or a cryptic clue.
Or maybe Yggy's mother just wanted to see a little joy back in her child's face. Maybe false hope was better than true disappointment and rejection.
"I don't think I'm your father, Yggy. I'm sorry," Glace said, sitting down. "I haven't even been on this server for very long. I'm from Italy, did I tell you that? I was born there and used to play on the European server. I live in New York now. I do have a son. Two, actually, and both of them live far away from me. I miss them a lot, and I wish they'd visit me more often. I miss taking them out to baseball games."
He sighed. "You like baseball, right Yggy. How about we catch a game sometime?"

"Italy? Really?"Yggy was impressed. "Wow, you don't have an accent or anything!" Or did he? It hadn't been something she'd been thinking about. She sat down next to Cardinal Glace, wishing she and Finn had thought to put more drippy candles down here. At the time, the 'ambiance' around the Kyogre pool had seemed more important than actual light. After all, the water itself had used to glow from somewhere deep down. Yggy wondered why. Kenny was not yet at the age where he realized people could have adult children, so automatically pictured Mr. Glaceon's kids as teens somewhere around his own age. "Are you serious? That would be so cool!" the tomboy said. "Maybe we could all go together, with your sons! Who's your team, the Mets? Mine is the Canadians! The Vancouver Canadians," Yggy added, since there were somehow multiple major league baseball teams in Canada with the same name. "That's where I'm from! I wish I was from somewhere cooler, though." Man, Italy! That was so neat. A light was coming from the dried-up pit, catching Yggy's attention. It was a different color than she remembered— she was pretty sure it had used to be green. Now it seemed closer to purple. She pointed, lowering her voice. "Look! It's lighting up again! It hasn't done that in forever. I wonder if it wants us to put an egg in it. Do you have one? Wait, you said you just joined this server, right, so you probably don't have that much stuff yet." The blonde checked her inventory, scrolling through her items, and stopped. A puzzled expression crossed her face. How'd I get an Articuno Egg?"Let's try this one!" she said, summoning it out of her inventory. The frosty blue shape appeared with a rush of chilling wind, making Yggy wince as she caught it. "Yowch!" she said. "It's cold..."
