He was right! Respiro knew the wind never lied; though it did have a habit of spreading rumors. Messages, whispers. Half-murmured things. Air was a tricky element. It slipped through your fingers when you tried to catch it, and raced you like a many-headed warhorse. An ally to strangers, and a stranger ally. Respiro tilted his head back to gaze up at the holes in the ceiling, lances of sunlight piercing the secret garden. He'd instinctively avoided the smoke and heat of the second door, dreading Tartarus, and chose Elysium instead. Vivillon fluttered up towards the openings, wings slices of sea. <Can't get through. There's a barrier.> He did not mind. He was happy to run and climb through this urban jungle, this sprawl of seed and sapling. Tiny flowers bloomed in Dodrio's feathers, forget-me-not, like miniature stars. The scent of flora grew heavy in the boy's nose, and he realized flowers were growing inside his mask, too. Maravilla, marigold. He breathed in its scent, bittersweet. Then he stepped in some sticky sap on the path and hopped on one foot, the spell broken. They were almost through the garden, but the hum of wings and crash of alien syllables filled the white spaces between noise, and Respiro knew it was time to run on. Runrunrun. Into the deep, into the world, into the next door. Still, the sparkle of ornament and broken glass dazzled him. Perhaps he could stop, just to get one souvenir? A good-luck charm. Something to carry forward, to carry on-- a knife, a note, a lost soul's name.

The path forked again, briefly sliding to a stop. The rumbling of beating wings in the distance was forcing her to make a quick decision. But, it wasn't just her making the choices anymore. "Alright gang, where to?"
"I'd say a delightful stroll through the garden could be lovely, but-"
"Some of them beasties can hide in foliage!" Glacia suddenly chimed in with some thoughtful commentary. "The smoke and heat might scare off some of the beasties!"
"You just like being a little firebug now, don't you?" Mr. Business commented, chuckling at Glacia's cheeky grin.
"Alright, let's get going. Stick together." Laguna would swiftly leap out the door to the Fire Escape, the intense heat washed over them like a wave, smoke pouring upwards like a smoking dragon. There was no time to pause to equip Kindler to handle the heat, they had to go.
And yet, for some reason, she was suddenly taking off her fireproof Rainbow Flame Cloak She moved to wrap it around Mr. Business's shoulders, nodding. At the same time, she activated her Cool Jorts, surrounding her with cool winds. Hopefully it was enough to disrupt the heat and the smoke for herself.
"Time to descend into hell." And with that, she took a step back and dropped down a ladder.

”WAIT, SHROOMS!?” “NOOOOOOO!” “DON’TEXPLODEDON’TEXPLODEDON’TEXPLODEDON’TEXPLODE!” “IT’S THE GROTTO ALL OVER AGAIN!” “WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?””Calm down, these clearly aren’t the same-!” Alicia began, only to sputter as a crushed shroom sprayed… something over her. Really!? First the syrup from the crash earlier and now this!? At this point she needed to get herself a Water type so she could wash herself off on demand. At least twin bursts of confetti meant that, technically, this was all good stuff. ”See what I-“The world was cruel. So absurdly cruel at times. That was the only explanation as the hulks of muscle and carapace crash in, Lunging immediately for them. Yggdril never stood a chance. One of their heads perked up, charging a Dragon Pulse as Alicia tried to drag them to a screeching halt. But a brutal Critical Hit from the Lunge obliterated their HP in an instant. ”NO!” Alicia screamed as the Buzzwole reached for her syrpents. She had to something! ANYTHING! Pokeballs were useless she could tell. Josh Devlin had lost one of his despite never releasing the unfortunate soul from the sphere, so she had to try and chase the beast off. And while she wasn’t anywhere near as strong as some of her Pokemon, she still raced around, throwing a punch at the Buzzwole’s gut. Much to her surprise, the insect actually grunted and budge a half an inch under her attempt at an attack. She at least forced the Buzzwole to acknowledge her presence. Human and Beast stared at each other for a tenth of a second. And then Alicia was thrown for a loop as an orange and black fist flew at her faster than she was able to track. Numbly, she more realized from trajectory alone that she was slammed into the far wall. Her vision swam as the single blow brought her personal HP down to a sliver. She struggled, only able to flop a limb or two uselessly as she could only see splotches of orange, red, and green growing smaller. Leaving… Yggdril was being dragged away… ”No…”…………………… Of the four who went into the garden, she would be the last one to awaken. Undoubtedly due to her extensive simulated injury from taking a Buzzwole’s punch directly. Until then, she would just be lying there, coated in syrup and poison and, for those with gore settings turned higher, quite a bit of her own blood and bruising. ”nngh…” Every nerve screamed as she came to. How had she not been logged out from the shock to her body’s system…? As she managed to recover, she slowly pushed herself to her hands and knees. Unsteady even though the ringing was subsiding, she stumbled back to her feet, looking around to see where she was now. A CEO’s office? ”Fumar… Yggdril…” Alicia muttered under her breath in despair, still shell-shocked at what had occurred. The world, unrelenting, shoved more choices in her face, dragging her eyes towards the skeletons and tome. Whatever may have been left of this after the others had been done with them. … Part of her wanted to give in to the fury she felt at this world. At the loss of two of her companions. Aimless, meaningless destruction for the sake achieving some minuscule amount of satisfaction in the devastation that followed. But no. The flames wouldn’t be quenched with that in the end. Only by reclaiming the taken from the unseen enemy’s grasp would she be able to truly snuff those angry, vengeful embers out. She was going to get them back somehow. And she needed to dig at whatever possible answers there were. As wicked as the tome clearly was… When she considered the possibility it might have something she could use in the future, it was far more tempting than it had any right to be. She reached for the tome. ——————————————————————— Die a Hero… or Live to become a Villain. (DANGER: COMMUNE)

As Shalin turned the corner to enter the EXECUTIVE GARDEN, true horror befell Reynir. Her Galarian Ponyta, the one "normal" Pokémon she could mount, had fled one swarm of Buzzwole... only to be stabbed by the proboscis of multiple others. Those with high gore settings enabled would have seen the psychic horse bleeding, her healing horn glowing in desperation. It was the fatal flaw of the species: it could heal others, but not easily heal itself. "Reynir!!" Shalin reached for her Pokémon, her vision fading to black as she felt another Buzzwole stab her.
She reappeared next to a despairing Alicia Westfield , getting to her feet at the same time as her new friend and giving her a hug if she allowed it. "I know how hard the loss is for you," she tried to console her. "But we need to get out of here. Now." As curious as she was to pore through the tomes on the executive's bookshelf, those buzzing Ultra Beasts would be swarming the office before she knew it. In the lull, there was only one thing she could do to survive... for she needed medical attention.
Book it, on foot, through the door, and to the nearest Shrine.
For if she didn't, her HP, too, would tick down to zero.
She turned around to see her friend poring through a tome, as though in a trance. "Alicia, are you coming? Alicia!" she shouted, giving up a few precious seconds for her to respond before fleeing as fast as her RUNNING SHOES could take her.

No response ever came. Had something awful befallen her? The only other that had survived the fall down the burning fire pole was Alkaid ; their Kindler classes had indeed saved their lives. He reached toward the redhead to embrace him if he allowed it. "You're alive! We're... both alive!"
Before long, they would find themselves inside an executive office, the first thing Josh saw being Alicia Westfield weeping for her Pokémon. It was clear she was not in the best of mental conditions. Josh wasn't, either, having lost his two most reliable ride Pokémon. "Hey. I'm so sorry for your loss, but we need to get out of here before they get you, too." She seemed to be in a rage-filled trance, reaching for the wicked tome within the bookcase. It looked toxic to even touch, its covers oozing ink-like coop. "Alicia, forget the book! We need to go!" He would reach for the girl's shoulder and try to drag her away from the desk, toward the exit. Were she to resist, he would reluctantly let go of her to try to save his own life.
He dreaded that this type of psychological damage wasn't something a simple Shrine visit could fix.
SAFETY - LEAVE MIDAS CORP, please!

He didn’t realize that there were several familiar faces that had gotten caught up in the… rather unique situation that they had all found themselves in.
“Wasn’t expecting to see you here,” he would remark in Josh Devlin’s direction, giving the younger man a noogie the moment he realized that it wasn’t just him that had decided to turn up here—a certain greenette had also appeared, along with a companion that he’d encountered over at the Cat Tower—who was now behaving completely and totally out of her normal…
“What are you doing?!” he barked in Alicia Westfield’s direction, watching as she reached out to touch the tome. “Are you crazy?!”
He originally moved to haul her away from the strange book that was bleeding the strange black ooze—it looked like a liquid, if he was being honest—
“Don’t touch that! You don’t know what’s going to happen—” he yelled as he reached to grab her hand away from the book.
Of course he wasn’t aware that the puddle of black goop (ichor, but of course his Italian mind registered it as goop) was something that could do weird things when near a person it could take advantage of and lashed out the moment he came too close.
“What the—ouch!” he yelped as the seemingly ‘innocent’-looking black goop had cut the back of his hand open, and now it was bleeding (bleeding? Was that even possible in the game?) and he was forced back a few steps.
“Cazzo,” he hissed as he shook his right hand, looking at it and checking if the blood welling out of it was contaminated or anything.
Despite his best precautions, though, the goop had infected him the moment it had lashed out and cut him open.
He didn’t feel anything weird… maybe?
Or was he just getting too complacent?
“Girl, whatever you’re doing, it’s not worth it!” he barked as he resumed attempting to drag Alicia away from the tome leaking the strange black ichor.
Still, the cut on the back of his hand hurt.

The mysterious gems had Laguna scratching her head, especially considering they were hollow, liquid sloshing around. Were they really all that special? There would be room to investigate it later, but for now they had to get out of here. Descending into the room, Laguna's eyes swiftly scanned the room as her Pokémon joined her at her side. It seemed so many else were so worse for wear. Pokémon gone, stolen from them. Many in poor physical condition, the Beasts taking prisoners but leaving scars to remind us of their presence. If only... Hoppy and Sheldon were still here. Maybe if she followed one of the Ultra Beasts here, she could find where they were keeping all the stolen Pokémon. And yet, she knew better than to sacrifice her current friends for such an act. She could not condemn anyone to do it... She would never sacrifice a Pokémon against their will. Nor would she ever allow such a stupid plan to go through, nobody else would be made to suffer. Her eyes scanned to the skeletons, the tomes. The black, seeping ichor. It immediately pulled back memories of just as dangerous times. Times where they had confronted the Corruption, pushed it back, protected Asper as best as they could. And yet, it was here, clear as day. It had been within the safe, that much was clear. But for how long? Before the city fell? There was no way to tell. She spared a glance at her Pokémon, speaking loudly so that all may hear. A quote popped into her head. An older time, another place, and yet it always seemed to grow more relevant each time. Corruption and burning flames rise in her minds eye. A phoenix, rising from the ashes from sacrificed souls. A genius inventor rising from his darkly-stained wooden prison. Of Corruption, spreading from body to body like a disease, infecting, twisting, and destroying.
"Corruption is infectious. Insidious darkness that changes those it touches." She nods solemnly, and her Pokémon seem swift to understand her intent. "We should not allow it to harm anyone else. It-"
"Sidera somnia ferri," Mr. Business suddenly spoke, the words of Cygnus's rescue ringing in her ears. "I read your reports. I know. This is no easy matter."
Glacia was just staring at the tome, the ichor, an almost literal fire burning in their eyes. Their determined desire to protect immediately flaring up, no denying their heroic spirit. Not after it burned so brightly in protest against such a threat before, and will again.
"Then it's settled."
Laguna would stretch out her hand, snowflakes swiftly twisting around it, summoning forth the chill in the air. "Do not touch that tome! Less you end up cursed as Cygnus was, or as Bunya's form is now. Corruption will destroy you, and all that you know."
She wouldn't wait any longer to tempt fate. Her sights were set on the tome, her Pokémon ready to fight as well should it come to it. They were ready. No knowledge of what might happen, or what was to come, but something so twisted by the corruption could not be allow to spread itself further.
A flick of the wrist, an icicle would form within the air, firing forth in an attempt to Attack the Tome. Attempting to pierce it through, to ruin its contents forever. She only could hope that her words would be enough to stop anyone too curious for their own good.

While Torino was trapped in enchanted sleep, the beasts plucked Girasoli from the garden.
Girasoli screamed for help, cursing Torino while her eyes were sealed shut by the balm of a dreamer's banquet. "WAKE UP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! THEY'RE HERE! HELP ME"
Torino woke with the others in the CEO's office. Girasoli was gone.
"Bleugh! The fruit was bad!" she complained, licking her teeth and spitting at the dirt taste. "So bad! What nightmare food!" Flashes of her dreams came back to her, over-saturated bodies dragging away a pastel green and pink plant.
She blanched, and looked around.
The party had thinned. Many were missing, snatched by The Chill. Her friends were missing. Her Girasoli, which she had found and hatched from a seed-egg, was gone.
She knew that there was no return from the den of the Chill.
She frowned, and blinked away the endless night. "My head is full of clouds," she said, holding her throbbing head in both hands. There was no Chill here. No Queen's Hunter. Her friends were missing, that was true, but they had been snatched by beasts.
Girasoli had been taken while she slept.
Torino breathed fast, hands clenching the soiled carpet as she wished for something to hold. She was alone without her Pokemon. Helpless. Undefended and cold.
She reached for a Pokeball, but they were all gone. She pulled up her UI and tapped the party option five times. It didn't open. It was greyed out.
She moved closer to Laguna. They weren't friends, but anything was better than sitting alone on the floor.
Her UI blinked.
Two. No, FOUR options stood out in bold lettering.
She read them. They didn't make sense.
She read them again, her thoughts full of dandelion fluff and slow-moving honey.
Attack the tome "Why would I fight a book? Am I scared of pages?"
Leave Midas Corp "I do not want to leave! I want my friends back!"
Ingest/Imbibe/Inject the ichor she wrinkled her nose at the prospect.
Commune with the tome "Like Comunione?" A spur of iron dug at her mind. A memory from a place of ice and thunder. A prince, in human form, wielding a tome not so different from this one, and pulling wind and crackling force from the ink within its pages.
"It is a magic book!" she said, voice full of reverence, and suddenly the ichor spilled from the pages looked a lot like leaked ink. "If we hold Comunione we will have its powers! To throw storms and blast winds!"
She licked her lips and tasted apple.
With that power in her hands she could turn the tides of a battle. She could win a war!
Hoping, praying, and distantly planning, she reached out and grabbed the book.

At the end of the race, the run, the corporate ladder, Respiro found company. Everyone was here. Glimpses, footprints, hoarse cries and silhouettes, each distant player in the dungeon was- at last- realized in its belly. They were gathered around bones and a book. He was the type to chase danger and run along its ribcage, but also the type to flee consequence, to blind his eyes and leap from a window, to live for later. Live for the lost, because to Respiro, 'lost' was a temporary thing. A waiting-place. Unseen, un-uncovered, a cat in a closed box looking for the light. The key was always to keep looking.Volveré...Would he be back? Volveré...Was there any returning? Would he save the Dodrio with the flowers in its fluff? Would he ever make up for that moment, rainbows wrapped around his fingers, where he'd watched the creatures carry it away? Briefcase held above his head like a hat, like an umbrella, Respiro ran. He loved to run. Even if he never knew where he was going, or whether he'd return, or how transient the way between might be. Nothing came of doing nothing. Standing still saved no one. He would save Dodrio. Somehow. Someday. It couldn't be lost. It would be happy to see him. It would never stand scorching in the fire and the flames, looking at his offered hand, and tell him Rook, No voy a volver- I'm not coming back.

A small smile graced her lips. The power before her was almost tangible. She could bring them back home with this. She just had to find where they had been taken. And then that brute was trying to deny her… His actions had already backlashed on him, but he was persistent. He was also strong and could force the issue if she didn’t do anything. ”You don’t get it…” Alicia hissed out, glancing over her shoulder again. At least Josh and Shalin could be convinced with a few words. But Alkaid? Not so much. With a quick set of calculations, she made her call. The burly man would need a much stronger retort. ”Get… OFF!”With that shrieked command, Alicia twisted her body at the hips. Tensing her arm, she drove the point of her elbow sharply into Alkaid’s chest. Directly into a point referred to as the solar plexus, a soft spot directly below the sternum. It was something of a weak point in all humans. And even if Alkaid had reduced pain thresholds, he was going to feel it. The nature of a blow to that spot drove the air, simulated or otherwise, from the unfortunate target. Leaving them weaker as they try to get their breath back. Alicia wasn’t sure how effective it would be in a VR setting like this. But she was sure that such a potentially unpleasant experience would be enough of a deterrent to drive him away. With the last obstacle (presumably) dealt with, all the was left was to seize the tome for her-… Another hand grasping it caused Alicia to look over at the culprit. At Torino. Was that what she looked like to others? Desperate for something to grasp in the storm? Rationalizing away the obvious evil as something mundane? Torino honestly looked like she’d taken things even harder than Alicia herself had. Alicia was at least cognizant that she was taking a step down a dark path. That she was going to be getting her hands dirty. That there will likely be a reckoning eventually for this. But if that rationalization helped Torino sleep at night, she wasn’t going to dispel the illusion. ”We’re going to get them back. Together. We’ll bring them home…” Alicia said softly towards Torino as they laid claim to the wicked tome together. As Midas Corp went dark, she’d leave when Torino was ready to go. Quietly, she noted down enough information in order to send a DM to the other girl later down the line. Friendships had been started over weirder circumstances, she imagined. Arceus help them when the consequences of today’s actions catch up to them… ———————————————————————

[tangent=“You idiot!”]“Idiota!”[/tangent] he would begin; never mind if he’d switched from English to Italian.
Fact of the matter was that he was getting frustrated the way she was acting; never mind if she’d lashed out at him and quite literally attacked him straight where it hurt.
Or… where it was supposed to hurt, all things considered since he’d gone through worse shit than this during his training for work back home. He wasn’t raised to be a quitter!
(That impact still hurt, though.)
[tangent=“If you want to save your companions, don’t do stupid shit you’ll end up regretting!”]“Se vuoi salvare i tuoi compagni, non fare cose stupide di cui finirai per pentirti!”[/tangent] he added; though he wondered if the other could hear him.
Tch.
He’d have to find either Josh Devlin or Shalin Nariya later and ask them a few things.
He’d have to deal with the pain on the back of his hand first; and looking for his Grookey later.
The good thing was he still had Muninn.
The bad thing was, the way she was behaving… it reminded him of another one of his former guildmates back home in the European server. He’d seen it happen before, and he knew what lay at the end of that road.
Hopefully he could stop her in time before it was too late…

”We’re going to get them back. Together. We’ll bring them home…”
Alicia Westfield's words struck a buried chord in Torino's soul. Her Pokemon, Girasoli and Nuvola, taken by the Ultra Beasts. Her Pokemon back in EU, stolen away and trapped in the dark freezer of the Precipice Shrine. Her friends lost in skirmish, scrap, battle and war. Either taken by the other side, left still in the darkness, or logged out forever.
There was power in belief, and strength in things she did not understand. Her hands buzzed with wonder and the tingle of new opportunities. "This will save them!" Torino vowed, as the ichor of the book seeped beneath her nails. "Together," she agreed, meeting Alicia's eyes as they forged a warrior's bond. "Together we will all go home."
