When was the last time he’d come out here? Certainly not after the Mantyke encounter, that was for sure.
The work on the ‘Magikarp Dex’ was still slow going, because asides from himself, who else was demented enough to try and do something like this—a possible in-game guide for one of the game’s not-often-used features…
Yeah he was completely and totally crazy for doing this by himself. But hey, we’re already here and we already committed, so there’s that.
The fishing rod had been stuck between some rocks; and not too far away his erstwhile fishing ‘companion’, the yet-nameless Kabuto with the many clicking mandibles, was sunbathing once more.
“You never get tired of doing that, do you?” he would ask the Kabuto, a quiet smile on his face.
‘What, this? Never,’ was the reply; and the clicking mandibles wasn’t as bad as it had been the several previous times they were out here.
we out here again for that last Magikarp lawl

“Do you remember anything from… from back then?” he would venture some ten minutes later; never had they gone this long without a singular bite.
‘Oh? You want to know if I can remember anything?’
“Pretty much,” he confirmed, though he wasn’t holding his breath on the matter. It wouldn’t take too long before the line began twitching—and both sets of human and Pokémon eyes would follow the twitching line.
‘Ah, but it seems you have a bite!’ the Kabuto would stall; secretly thankful for the distraction. Because if he was being honest, he still could not recall anything at all…

“Huh? What do you mean there’s a bite—” he would trail off just in time to see that the pole was now bending uncharacteristically backwards before he quickly made a grab for it.
Somehow the timing of this was a little too convenient, but there you have it. A few seconds of struggling later, and he would reel in…
“…huh? Isn’t this a normal Magikarp?” he would blink, looking at the fish wiggling on the other end of the line. For all intents and purposes, it looked too normal, and he was about to send it back into the water when the Kabuto looked up with their unblinking eyes.
‘Look again, the belly isn’t fully orange. The underbelly looks… pale, to me,’ they would point out. He would reel the fish in closer and then the split-second realization would hit him.
“Be right back,” he would say as he ‘froze’ in that position as he hurriedly reached for the note pad and wrote down his observations, before putting an entire bunch of question marks after it because—why did it look so normal—and then ‘moving’ once he was back.
“Alright… let’s try that again.”

Eventually the Magikarp with the pale underbelly would wiggle free and flop back into the water with a fantastic splash—and also, quite unfortunately, taking the first lure along with them!
“Hey!” he barked, realizing that the other end of the line was lighter than he meant for it to be.
‘As your kind say, tough luck,’ the Kabuto would snicker, and he had to pinch his nose to prevent the colossal eye roll from escaping him as he took a deep breath to calm himself down.
He didn’t realize his nose had turned red due to him pinching it so hard until the skittering noise of the clicking mandibles caught his attention.
“Did you see something?”
‘No, not really.’
He would huff, and attach a new lure to the end of the line before recasting it into the water.
Hopefully the next thing on the line would be something nice…

The next bite on the line would have him making this noise of mirth because… he already had this one. In fact, he already evolved his Magikarp into a black mask Gyarados…
‘You already got this one, correct?’ the Kabuto would confirm.
“Yeah. And no longer a Magikarp… but a Gyarados that retained her coloration,” he would confirm with this bemused smirk on his face.
‘Wait. What do you mean, her?’
“You heard me. The black mask we caught the last time? Is apparently a female!” he would exclaim as he shook he line free; watching as the second black-masked Magikarp would flop back into the water—without his bait, this time.

‘How sure are you that was a female?’
“The whiskers. Male ones match their color… and apparently females have white whiskers. At least it’s a good way to tell which Magikarp is which, considering they’re not just the normal, ornery kind of orange out here!” he would explain as he stuck the fishing pole back between the two rocks where he’d jammed it into earlier.
‘So now you have a black Gyarados?’
“Yeah, that’s about it. Kind of cool, if you ask me,” he would hum as he saw the line bend once again—what was on the other end, this time?

…were the cosmos mocking him, or was today the same black-mask day?
Both pairs of eyes looked towards the line; and this time it was the Kabuto who confirmed that this Magikarp was…
‘Back for more?!’ was all they would say, before this time, voluntarily, launching themselves from the rock where they were sunning themselves—mandibles clicking menacingly at the black masked Magikarp who really was a sucker for punishment.
“Oh, come on!” was all he would exclaim; before the Kabuto would tussle and eventually free the wayward fish from the line; making sure that the lure hadn’t been taken.
‘And stay out!’ they would grate after the black Magikarp plopped back into the water.

He couldn’t help but laugh as he recast the fishing line into the water—albeit aiming at a different direction this time, because he realized that his Kabuto did behave like one of those old geezers on the lawn… but spoke with much more class and sass.
“Thanks,” he would continue as the Kabuto then skittered back towards their suntanning rock and got back to their interrupted ‘bake’.
‘It was nothing. All you need to do is say the word, and I shall do what you want me to do,’ the Kabuto would continue, skittering mandibles quieting down as they shuffled around the rock while he waited for the line to bend once more…

Both sets of eyes would take a few seconds to register just what was hanging on the other end of the line…
It wasn’t the ‘blue’ Magikarp that they were chasing for; however it was something so… so ‘mystical’, it made the white-haired human burst out into a fit of laughter.
“Well, well!” he would exclaim; before the Kabuto looked at him, confused.
‘What is it?’
“We might have to end this trip a lot earlier than usual. They said Dratini are stupid rare out here, so…”
‘Wait, we are?’
“Oh, definitely.”
He… hm, he wondered how his ‘rival’ in arms, at least in terms of Dragon-types Alicia Westfield would take this news.
“Let’s go.”
‘Say less.’
The Kabuto would then readjust their position on their sunbathing rock, before immediately skittering and taking a flying leap towards the Dratini!

If he remembered this shit right, the Pokédex entry for Dratini mentioned something about it being able to change the weather, or something. No, wait, was that Dragonair?
He was… definitely getting his Pokédex entries mixed up now, fantastic! All the while, the Kabuto was slinging all manner of trouble through their… mandibles that continued to click ominously at every turn.
“You know?! I’ve finally decided on something!”
‘What is it?!’
“Your name!”
That made the Kabuto lose focus for a precious few moments; before getting a surprise sideswipe attack from the Dratini for not paying attention!
‘Oh, really? What have you decided on?’
“I’ll let you choose after you’re done with them!”
The Kabuto then turned, fixing their beady red eyes on the Dratini, and threw themselves right back into the heat of battle.

It wouldn’t take too long for the Kabuto to force the Dratini to crash-land on the wet sand, flopping around like some kind of demented Magikarp wannabe.
‘Well, what is it?’
“I rather you have the freedom to choose, because that’s how I named Hanzo. He actually had to pick between that name and Genji, but that was only because he’s literally a ninja.”
‘A fair assessment.’
“Don’t tell me you want the name Genji?” he blinked.
‘What language even are you speaking?’ the Kabuto would counter back, mandibles clicking amusedly as he pulled out the golden Pokéball from his interface and popped it open.
“Well, I’ve come to a few names, but… they sound so old-timey I don’t know if you’d like them!”
‘What are the names? Let me know.’

He found it weird—for a Pokémon named Kabuto, this one didn’t know that their species name was already Japanese from the get-go.
“Well, I was thinking either Arthur, Merlin, or Lancelot, since you didn’t understand the name Genji, so…”
‘Let me think, child.’
Okay, that seals the deal—they called me a kid, he thought with the faintest hint of a smile on his face as he then tapped the golden Pokéball on the passed-out Dratini and watched as it was sucked into the red beam of light.
“Man, someone’s going to get really jealous after they see what I got from out here,” he hummed as the Kabuto then turned to him.
‘I have made my decision.’
“Well, what is it?”
‘The name I choose is—’
