Josh had become lost riding Luna through the Surge Steppes. The transition from trot to canter was particularly jarring; having ridden many kinds of Pokémon, he could tell that the large saddle that covered most of the big cat's back was designed to alleviate as much jostling as possible. Even so, Liepard were predators, not beasts of burden; their backs flexed powerfully once they got up to speed, Josh seemingly floating in midair at the bottom of his mount's run cycle only to be caught by Luna's flexing spine at the top. It was more fun than riding a horse, but it was also more tiring -- and harder on his thighs and hips.
Unlike what Alicia Westfield might believe, Josh wasn't in such a dangerous section of the Surge Steppes to go on a joyride with his ultrafast Pokémon. No. With the dangers this world put him in, he desired to be able to fight for himself. And there were no weapons shops in UNOVR. If he wanted to wield his dream blade... he would have to craft it for himself.

Fortunately, Alicia had been under no such qualms regarding what Josh was going to be up in this area for. Ever since the meet up at the Underforge, Alicia had at least had an idea of Josh’s approximate itinerary. With that in mind, she’d made sure to be poking the Surging Steppes. Of the areas here, this seemed the most likely to possess that which they both sought. Raw material with which to craft the weapons and armor they would need to safeguard everyone they cared about. Originally, it had been one of the requirements to be able to stand on the field with their Pokemon. But ever since the most recent patch, Alicia realized that was no longer the case. It explained why she’d been able to get some kind of reaction from that Buzzwole, minute as it was. ”This use ta be one of my old stompin’ grounds…” Giyun mused as the towering dragon ran to keep up with Ronda’s trot. ”Feel’s weird ta come back ta somethin’ this changed…””Hope you don’t mind that we plan to use what we can harvest here.” Alicia replied, taking a deep breath. She needed everything she could get. The extra stats the equipment could grant was too important. ”Don’t mind at all.” Giyun assured. He grimaced, having thought of how things went near the end of Midas Corp ”I’d rather you use it and stay safe rather than go in unarmored and get pasted…””… I had to try…” Alicia whispered. ”We don’t blame you for wanting to protect Yggdril…” Ronda answered, glancing back. ”But there’s some fights you can’t take…”Alicia was about to retort, snarling a bit, when Giyun bellowed a laugh. ”I spy a midget!”The Gardener chuckled softly, having Ronda veer towards the direction Giyun indicated. As they pulled up beside him and Luna, she waved and smiled softly. ”Rough time up here?”She was glad most of her dragons would be able to endure the crashing lightning decently well. Not that she wanted to get struck in the first place of course. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

As Josh sped toward the entrance to the Dragon's Maw, a cutscene played showcasing the lightning-ravaged, gravity-warped field of twisted metal tarnished by electrical burns. With Saber the Manectric around, his body serving as a biological lightning rod, they would be safe from the elements while gathering materials.
"Hi, Alicia!" Josh waved as he reined the Liepard to a stop in front of her, clutching his leg after the wild and speedy ride. "She's gonna take... a lot of getting used to," he sheepishly admitted. "When I was younger, I always wanted to ride a big cat. Now I think I know why no one does in the real world."
It would take a lot of training, but one day, he would conquer the feline's rough gait. Her big saddle helped a lot, but it was still tougher on him than a horse Pokémon at speed. His feet seemed to spark with electricity -- a sign that his BOLTER class had been maxed. "Been enjoying this new class a lot. I just need to find a way to transfer the speed boost to my mount. Anyway, what's first on the agenda? I imagine gathering scrap metal. I think our best bet is to load it onto my electric Pokémon. That way, the lightning will strike them harmlessly."

Alicia whistled softly as she took in her own version of the cutscene, taking a deep breath. Maybe she should invest into a few Lightning Rod pokemon… Even if the ability didn’t exist, they natures still lent to those reactions. ”There’s a reason big cats aren’t a more common fantasy mount as well, ya…” Alicia answered with a smirk. ”But good on you for the commitment.””There may have been some scrap at that Under-forge place but this stuff’s bound to be purer, more useful. Also, uh… let’s find another option for doing our forging? Giyun noted with a grimace. ”Someone’s not very fond of the ceiling magnet, huh?” Ronda teased with a smug look. ”YOU TOLD HIM!?” Giyun bellowed, making Alicia wince and clasp her hands over her ears. ”I said nothing, you know how Fumar would love to share… that…” Alicia replied, trailing a bit. Shaking her head, she refocused. ”You might be able to just… ‘grab’ the speed boost effect and ‘push’ it towards your mount? I don’t know. I just know that now that I’ve had a couple Pokemon who benefitted from the Gardener class, I can feel little… ‘threads’? Of energy going from me to them that ‘taste’ of vegetation. It’s… kinda weird? But also intuitive? Yet not? I’m rambling, I’m sorry.”——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

It may have been for the better that Josh left that potential on the table for the time being. He was already struggling with Luna's high speeds, as well as Saber's in this electric environment. Without reduced pain thresholds, the boy would have been in quite a world of hurt from his feline mount's flexing spine at speed. "It'll take getting used to, like anything else. Once I have the muscles for it... she'll blow away Raiden from that race. And it's a step in the direction of my... dream. To saddle a Raikou."
If the Gardener class had hidden features like that, then surely a Bolter would, too. "I'll have to mess around with it. But--"
A massive lightning strike had been attracted to Saber, the force of its impact knocking Luna into the air and sending Josh flying from the saddle. "Ow..." he groaned, landing on his side. It took him a bit to get to his feet, giving the Liepard a gentle pat before climbing on again. He pointed toward a distant metal spire that had been ripped to pieces. Was it a lightning strike so intense that not even a lightning rod could hold itself together?

Alicia nodded in response at Josh’s commentary. ”Yeah, might be a good idea to wait on the whole ‘try and transfer speed boosts’ thing.”She could only imagine how badly that would go at this point. Josh was right, a Liepard at full speed likely blew a Zebstrika out of the water. And she couldn’t help but smile at the mention of Raikou. The boyscout, and she still chuckled at the joke that wrote itself, probably didn’t go a day without thinking about the day Raikou was hopefully unleashed upon UNOVR. The stroke of lightning made Alicia jump in alarm. As if in response to the bolt’s strike, her own body crackled with small sparks. The aforementioned race had given her the last requirements she needed to unlock Bolter as well. Briefly, it had slotted itself into place over Swimmer. But without any ranks in it, it couldn’t last. So after a sudden error message Alicia had to wipe away, Swimmer reasserted itself and the electricity vanished from her body. ”Uh, right, let’s get moving before that happens again.” Alicia mused, shaking her head. She would’ve helped Josh, but her own technical issues kept her held in place until he had recovered. ”We might need to ride gravity shifts to get to that spire. Otherwise we’ll likely be here quite a bit longer than either of us want to be.””You cool there buddy?” Ronda asked in concern towards Saber, his own eyes wide as he started moving at Alicia’s urging. Josh and Luna had recovered well enough, but he hadn’t seen much reaction from the Manectric. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

To Josh's knowledge, Alicia wasn't a Bolter; such a reaction would be expected of the grass-type specialist. Given the trick Tikani could perform, though... maybe it wasn't a stretch for her to have an electric affinity like his own?
"You're probably right," Josh nodded, giving the Liepard a light kick to the sides and match Alicia's pace. As they approached a landmass floating on its side, he felt gravity suddenly shift, his gut going flying to one side. The sky was now to his right, the "ground" to his left. Gulping, one realm, and one Pokémon, came to mind.
"Doesn't this scream Distortion World to you?" he asked Alicia in trepidation.

”Urk!” The Gardener had choked out as she got herself pulled along in the same manner. ”Uuuuugh my gut!” Ronda bemoaned as he crashed into the floating landmass, sending Alicia toppling over. Giyun landed roughly thanks to his innate mass, but he was solid for the same reason. Alicia took the chance to pick herself up, brushing herself off. ”It kinda does, ya! To think I imagined how fun it would be to be able to bounce between landmasses like that if there wasn’t a certain someone waiting in the darkness. If I ever get to send a message back to eight year old me, I’d tell her ‘it’s not that fun’… Among other things.” Alicia answered. ”Lets just… get this done and over with, ya? I’m gonna get air sick if this keeps up much longer.” the Cyclizar chimed in. ”Please bear with it. I have no idea what to use for medication for a Cyclizar!” Alicia replied with a small bit of panic. ”I promise, we’ll get through this soon!”Ronda groaned some more, continuing to plod along. Today was not his day. Alicia in turn wondering if she should trade him out for another Pokemon. … Would wearing Shylla as a hat keep her safe, or make her be the ‘ground’ he innately sends the lightning into? Never mind, the Toedscool wouldn’t appreciate that in the slightest… ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Condition: Ill Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Josh, on the other hand, loved the experience. He just didn't like the connotations associated with the phenomenon. "As awesome as it would be to wield the power of that Pokémon, there are just... some legendary Pokémon that really shouldn't be in the hands of players," Josh mused. "Especially... just about every Sinnoh legendary. There's a difference between commanding a god of lightning... and a god of antimatter. Even I'd be hesitate to saddle a Giratina."
Ronda looked ill from the sudden shift of gravity; Josh couldn't imagine the kind of pressure such a change put on her air sacs. They could withstand a lot of punishment, but even a Cyclizar could suffer a flat if struck with enough force. That was a flat only time could fix; unlike a motorcycle, one couldn't just put a spare tire on a Cyclizar.
As the Liepard cantered toward the sky, he pointed to a shattered metal spire. "Look alive, Alicia - it's straight ahead!" he called out to her.

”Don’t forget just straight up capital G God. Or at least a shard of him.” Alicia replied, remembering Legends Arceus. What a ride that had been. ”Anyways, that power being in human hands isn’t inherently a bad idea. It’s when it’s in the hands of those without the self control to use them responsibly that problems crop up. Like that one time some kid got mad that I beat him in Diamond and demanded a re-match. Brat dropped both Dialga and Palkia on me and I was not smart enough to beat them with underdogs back then…”The deploying of the Time and Space deities to get petty revenge was… a thought that made her thankful that Pokemon were stuck in the lands of digital entertainment. She did look back and see Ronda getting worse and worse. With a sigh, she recalled the Cyclizar before he actually hurled his lunch. To replace him, she released a Ground type of her own to help with Lightning Rod efforts. Crios emerged, raising his head and looking around. ”Rather foul weather, huh…?” he commented softly. ”Yeah, now lets grab the metal and get going.” Alicia agreed as Josh alerted her to the proximity of their target. Rumbling heavily, the Onix surged onward, acting as cover for Alicia and Giyun under him. And not too soon, as a bolt from the blue crashed down. It hammered into Crios’ horn, electrocuting him sharply. But fortunately he came out of it well enough thanks to his typing. “Ow. That actually stung a bit.””Can you keep going?” Alicia asked in concern. They were so close! ”Yes.” Crios answered simply. And the Onix’s body would let them haul much more metal than Josh was likely originally expecting. ——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Condition: Ill Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"Right, he's a thing, isn't he," Josh mused, smiling a bit too wide. "I mean... if he shows up, I wouldn't exactly say no. Arceus does learn Extreme Speed, after all." What a rush that would be, particularly if Arceus could type-shift in UNOVR much like it could in the mainline series. Each of the eighteen types had to have a different feel to it. He had serious doubts that the developers would put that kind of power in the players' hands. In his eyes, it was more likely for Arceus to appear as a postgame bonus boss that he had to have a fully maxed character to stand a chance against. A bonus boss programmed to be the most challenging content in the game.
Crios complaining about the sting of a lightning bolt left Josh concerned. "Exactly. We need to hurry." Thankfully for them, there was a lull in the storm, letting him load some of the ore onto Crios if the Onix allowed it. Otherwise, he would use his other electric Pokémon to haul their cargo back to the mainland. "Now, where's this new forge at?" he asked Alicia, unsure what the girl's game plan was.

The Onix was quiet as Josh came over with hunks of ore, accepting the load without a problem. He even helped out in his own way, gently grabbing some heavier chunks of ore in his mouth that they could process later. Alicia in turn heaved a sigh. ”I don’t actually have a game plan of my own in mind anymore. When I first embarked on the plan to get Ironsmith, my idea was that I’d ask Fumar to serve as a living furnace, if he were willing. Especially if he had become a Coalossal in time.”A plan that went belly up with the small issue of Midas Corp. She couldn’t ask Fumar’s aid any more after all. ”So I suppose I was going to do a makeshift one. There’s really nothing wrong with the Under-Forge itself though-“”Giant. Ceiling. Magnet.” Giyun seethed. ””Almost nothing wrong…” Alicia corrected with a small huff, rolling her eyes. One incident and Giyun was done with the place all told. ”I’ll keep an eye out for something we can use elsewhere if needs be.” Ideally it won’t be too much of an issue. With a new fire type, she was self sufficient again at least. As well as not planning on touching on the Arceus thing after what Josh mentioned unless she had to. Joyriding around on the god of Pokemon’s whole world? Wasn’t that exactly the kind of irresponsible use she had mentioned earlier!? … Oh who was she kidding, of course Josh would go for it. Giyun, as tough as the Duraludon was, seemed once bitten, twice shy. "Long as we have iron ore, metalworking tools, and heat, that's all we need." All the steps had been completed; it was up to Alicia Westfield to make a makeshift forge with her Pokémon. "Ares is available if you need an extra source of heat," he offered, aware of what happened at Midas Corporation. "Ixion..." he started to think about the Ponyta that had gone missing.
The young one couldn't help but laugh when Giyun got off his rocker. "Entertain me. While we put this forge together, entertain me. You're saying that the Underforge was unusable because of a giant ceiling magnet? I have to hear this story."
Alicia's silence about Josh reining up Arceus was all he needed to hear. He expected her to disapprove of him strapping riding tack to any legendary, let alone that one. Was it irresponsible to turn a god into one's private jet? Probably. Did it hurt anyone? Absolutely not. What was the harm in some good, clean fun?

”Oh you’re just loving hearing it all over again ain’t ya! Ya little runt!” Giyun boomed in anger. He’d seen Josh there after all, how could he have forgotten the huge crashing noise as he was picked up like a toy!? ”Probably laughing ya tail off behind my back! ‘Oh lookie there! There goes Giyun! Up into the sky, boom! Big and strong titan’s just a toy to play with now, look at ‘im flail his nubby arm!’ WELL IT AIN’T FUNNY AND I’D LIKE TO SEE YA DEAL WITH GETTING MANHANDLED! IN FACT, GET OVER HERE RIGHT NOW YA BRAT AND I’LL-“Alicia wisely recalled Giyun at that point. The steel dragon had started stomping towards Josh with not-quite-murder in his eyes when Alicia had finally realized she should probably step in. ”… His pride never recovered after that, as you can see…” Alicia offered lamely as a sort-of excuse. Giyun’s Pokeball shook fiercely in her hand, an indication of just how steaming mad the anchor of her team was. Given the dragon had gone toe to toe with a Buzzwole (albeit with support), a Rhyperior, and survived devastating hits from Colossal Pokemon before, a threat by Giyun was no laughing matter. ”Moving on…” Alicia hummed out as she kept working. ”I might need Ares’ help in a bit, as I actually didn’t bring my replacement Fire type now that I think about it. But I want to try something I learned first…”In the midst of Giyun’s tirade, she had directed Crios towards precision strikes that would give them hunks of smooth stone to work with. They had to be pretty large, given that the class requirement called for them to forge armor specifically, rather than a weapon, and a breastplate was fairly large. Then the Onix’s mass and skill with burrowing was used to help them create a ditch with which to cradle their impromptu forge. ”Right, I did bring some tinder to get started. There’s probably coal that can be used itself to stoke the heat higher deeper in the mountain. Think you can dig towards it and retrieve it, Crios?” Alicia mused softly. ”It should be distinct enough.” Crios replied, moving to go drilling for the fuel. Alicia nodded softly to herself. Fortunately she had thought to harvest some available wooded materials, branches and such really, prior to arriving here. With a little work to secure a makeshift airway, Alicia arranged the tinder material. As for what she wanted to try? She wanted to see if she could pull her mock Solar Blade trick that she’d devised when she met up with Torino again without support. The heat of the sun should be enough to set the spark, shouldn’t it? With just the fifth rank of her Gardener Class to power it. How did it go again…? Raising a hand to the sky, forgetting for a moment there was a storm going on, she focused on the thought of the suns rays. Of collecting them and gathering their might. A few rays still peeked through the clouds of course, but this wasn’t working. It was a lot easier when she was leaning on Tikani who did this on instinct for Solar Beam… And then she thought about a series she knew, humming. Magic was possible in this game, after all. Bunya herself had showed it off to her the first time with the… ‘Christmas’ event. And that series’ magic was all done via Math. … Okay technically it was with math that was way beyond what she could reasonably do in her lifetime. But the concept was sound all the same, wasn’t it? And Tikani’s use of Reflect barriers to gather light was a kind of Math. If she could jury-rig it-… A green-colored circle of energy appeared, ringing her hand, and the scant rays of light began to coalesce. Once she had a small orb, she grasped it tight and directed her will, forming a thin pole with it. Which she then ‘snapped’ into two pieces. It wasn’t anywhere near as radiant as what she’d managed with Tikani’s aid, but that was expected. It was then that a bolt from the blue struck, startling her. ”Right! Thunderstorm! That was really stupid! Moving on!” Dry swallowing, she tapped her two solar sticks together. Nodding at the sound she got, she smirked and kneeled down, using them the same way one would use an actual pair of sticks. With the heat of her implements being collected sunlight as well as the friction she created, the pinkette hero aspirant was able to start the spark. With a smirk, she tended the flame careful. ”There we go. When Crios comes back we’ll be good to go. Though do keep Ares on standby please. Just in case.”——————————————————————— {Party}Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Ronda (Cyclizar) [3/3/3] Condition: Ill Crios (Onix) [3/3/3] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Josh laughed even harder as Giyun fumed on and on, though his laughter stopped at Alicia's remark. "Sorry, the whole Underforge thing kinda blurred together for me," he apologized, trying to compose himself after the great big laugh.
While Crios was out and about, the now on-foot Josh withdrew the rest of his team for Ares, the Charmeleon's tail glowing brighter than normal. He was fired up. "I'm looking forward to this. Who says the knight in shining armor can't ally with a dragon?" the fire-type pointed to himself with a pompous facial expression.
"I know you can't wait to evolve," Josh gave Ares a shoulder pat. "I'm getting through the grind as fast as possible. We'll get to level 18 in little time at all." He turned toward Alicia again. "He's... really excited to evolve. And I'm looking forward to flying on him."
Provided Crios came back with the metals, they would have all the resources they needed. "You want to go first, or am I going first?"
