Alright, so…
It had been some time since that strange event appeared, the one called ‘Shadow over Asper’. Why was he too late to the realization party when he witnessed what had happened? About how majority, if not the entire scenario literally reeked of the ‘Shadow over Innsmouth’ by H.P. Lovecraft?
He idly wondered if the other had an aversion to a certain genre of content, and so this would be the defining meeting that would all but confirm his suspicions.
He was… hilariously, at another roadside café that sold mostly sandwiches and fruit drinks, so while he was waiting for the other to show up, he would peruse the menu and eventually settle on a tuna and egg salad sandwich.
What drink would he pick this time…? Well, that mango and banana shake looked tempting, so he would place the order for that along with a side of fries as well.
‘Hey, Josh. You remember that place where you bailed from and I stayed behind to see what would happen? Me and Hanzo saw the entire thing through, and… well, just come over here so we can tell you what happened.’
He would include the coordinates of the café and wait for the other to show up.

After returning from a harrowing battle with his Rival, Josh would receive a text from Altair , directing his attention to a diner that was very close to the site of the match. It wouldn't take him long to reply.
DIRECT MESSAGE> On my way.
With all of his Pokémon at one hit point from the loss, it would be cruel for him to saddle up. As such, it may have come to Altair 's surprise that the blonde child was on his feet, evidently having walked all the way to Jerry's Eatery. Sitting down at his table across from the Sky Trainer, the first thing he may have noticed about him was every inch of his skin was puckered as though he had spent an entire day in a swimming pool.
"Is that what this is about?" Josh asked as he likewise perused the menu. Their grilled chicken sandwich, cheddar fries, and a strawberry milkshake sounded like it would hit the spot. "As soon as I saw the option to complete the quest, I was gone."

Normally he knew the other would come riding in on the back of any Pokémon he had out at the time, but—wait. Wait, hold up, time the fuck out.
“What happened to you?” he blinked, making sure he’d sent the message to the correct person and double-checking the direct message he’d received. What in the name of—
“What the hell,” he mouthed a few moments later. “Unless I’m tripping, how do I know you’re Josh Devlin?”
Another blaringly obvious fact that something was wrong: his feet were touching the ground.
(Why did this look like another scenario at another roadside café?)
He would blink, confusion still on his face at least until the other started perusing the menu—he’d have to take this kid’s word for it that he was indeed, the very same Josh he’d explored with.
“You literally turned tail and made a run for it,” he would nod along quietly, once someone had come over to take the new arrival’s order and was on their way. “You literally bailed at the last second. Humor me—is cosmic horror, or the entire cosmic horror genre as a whole, something that doesn’t sit well with you?”

Had it really been so long since they'd seen each other? It felt like just a week or two ago that Josh had been to the Identity Parlor to get his avatar changed. "I know it's hard to believe, but I really am him. Let me send you another message... if my puckered fingers can touch the interface. All that water really hurt. Remember Aravan from the Silph Cup race? He's my rival."
To prove his point, he quickly sent Altair a simple direct message.
DIRECT MESSAGE> test
"I just sent you the word 'test'. I probably owe you an explanation, don't I? Then we'll get to talking about what happened at the... Abandoned Village, was it?" That place. He didn't want to think about it. It was incredibly creepy, and he was lost the entire time. He couldn't put together one bit of mystery, and reading ransom note after ransom note made his skin crawl. "So there's this place in the Western District called the Identity Parlor. If you show them a fat wallet, to the tune of a couple thousand BYTES, they'll change your appearance for you. That's why I look like a kid now."

“Geez, did you go swimming for an extended period of time or something?” he would ask the other. Pruny fingers were some of the absolute worst to have, all things considered.
(Heck, they even managed to capture the sensation of pruny fingers in virtual reality? Talk about technology advancement.)
“Wait, what? The guy who had a smaller-than-usual Kyogre?” he would blink, before seeing another direct message appear on his end—that settled it, this short kid was indeed the very same Josh Devlin.
“Yeah, I got the test message. Geez, you really want to ride anything and everything, huh, is that why you shrunk yourself down like that?” he would confirm with the other.
The first thing that would be delivered to their table would be their drinks—a strawberry milkshake for the literal kid, and his own frothy, yellow concoction of banana and mango. Well, the two fruits were close in flavor profile in the real world, so who knew how this mess was going to taste when he tried it?
(The fun of virtual reality—eating food and not gaining a single pound!)
“Alright, so… you fled right after… I remember Hanzo told me that when the downpour picked up, he yelled at you to get the hell out of there and. He followed after me, because from what I think he told me, I just… jumped out of the second-floor straight into… water.”

As hard as it may have been to believe, he didn't hot the pool at all. "My Rival's a water-type specialist. Aravan. Aravan Escher, the guy who rode the tiny Kyogre--yes, that's the one." he confirmed, letting Altair respond before continuing. "We had a nasty battle with one another... and I lost. And I can fight for myself now, you know?" Small sparks crackled from his fingertips for a moment before he retracted the energy for using his ZIO ability. "He beat me up so bad. I'm so glad there's a PVP mode where nothing can reduce you to below 1 HP. We had a battle in Ostellia, not knowing of that mode's existence... and one of his Pokémon went to the Everworld. That's never happening again."
Josh took a swig of his shake, still waiting for his main course to arrive. "That's exactly why!" he grinned. "Long as it goes fast and has the right body shape, I'll jump on!" It would be taken to the ultimate extreme once Mirage evolved. That Nincada -- or the Ninjask Mirage became -- might make the poor Sky Trainer lose his mind.
"So you stayed until the bitter end..." Josh trailed off, intently listening to the rest of Altair 's story. "I mostly came there for the promised Articuno strand. My team is sorely missing a dragon answer; it's why I keep losing to Alicia Westfield in the Arena. I want to get stronger than she is, but it feels like I hit a wall every time I battle her. She's got to be one of the strongest characters on the whole server."

He hadn’t gotten that far yet when it came to the ‘personal’ modifications; because as much as he wanted to make himself a ranged spell caster, he knew he had to at the very least unlock the Tank class to a sustainable level where his companions could protect him from aggressive attacks.
“Yes. We did,” he would nod quietly as he took a sip of the frothy yellow concoction.
When the other bemoaned their luck against Alicia Westfield, he would sigh.
“You’re not thinking outside of the box far enough. Do you legitimately need a legendary Pokémon to be able to take her down in combat? You’re just… punishing yourself too much. Think. What else are Dragon-types weak to?”
He would wait for the other to answer as he took another sip of his drink.
“And speaking of… you really don’t feel comfortable with eldritch horrors, do you?” he would confirm a few moments afterward.

"I know what Pokémon I need to track down, and I've already got one for the task," Josh retorted. "Ice and Fairy-types. I've got Rime, an Alolan Vulpix. I just haven't... triggered her evolution condition yet. You know how Pokémon in your boxes flash when they're ready for evolution? I'm getting into the upper teens for levels and she still hasn't started flashing. Do you know anyone with a Ninetales?" he asked. "Other than that, I've got a Bagon named Yosei." A name that Altair would have instantly recognized. "As it turns out, mountable fairy-types are few and far between, even for my size, and dragon-types take forever to grow. I pulled up Yosei in the menu to see what level I'd have to be to mount him. Twenty-five. Twenty-friggin-five. You know how far away from that I am?"
Josh visibly tensed at the mention of eldritch horror. "I barely survived Innistrad block," he sighed, very clearly not comfortable with the subject, as the Sky Trainer expected. "What about it?"

He idly wondered what kind of gameplay settings the blonde had active, because—he didn’t encounter any kind of ‘level requirement’ when it came to popping his Pokémon up when it was time to evolve. He just—let them evolve when they wanted to.
“Maybe there’s some other condition you haven’t met yet,” he would sagely hum. He knew that Dragon-types were an ass and a half to evolve because of the excruciatingly painful level curve they employed—why do you think he still had a Dratini despite all that—but still.
“You went and got a Bagon without me? Damn, man, I’m wounded,” he continued; his eyebrows quirking at the mention of the name.
The moment the other reacted the way they did when he mentioned eldritch horror, his suspicions were confirmed.
“So I guess you’re not a fan of anything H.P. Lovecraft, then,” he added.
“Because when we got to… to the very end of it all, everything started falling together and making sense. They were all turned into fish.”

"Possibly," Josh nodded. Some Pokémon, like Glaceon and Leafeon, had unusual evolution conditions. One would think and Ice Stone or a Leaf Stone would be enough, but their evolution was tied to certain environmental conditions. "Might have to find UNOVR's Icy Rock and evolve Rime there. Wonder where that could be..." There weren't any ice areas Josh knew of. Perhaps they were beyond the Corruption and were unavailable until the story advanced farther than it was now.
Josh felt slightly guilty upon hearing Altair 's remark about Yosei. "Alicia Westfield approached me first, and the early bird gets the worm. It should be too hard of an opponent for you, though; just go to the Arena and get one next month. With how strong you are, you should be able to take one on alone." That Shelgon was a bit more of a headache than Josh and Alicia had expected, particularly when a dragon specialist was involved. Even so, he suspected the Bagon would evolve soon.
Josh gasped at Altair 's tale as he saw their waiter come around with their main course. "None of your Pokémon got turned into fish, did they? I'm so glad I bailed when I did."

“Either they still have the same conditions to evolve in-game, or they nixed that option and made it all available from the start and left it up to us to decide when we evolve our companions,” he hummed.
(Truth be told, he knew that Hanzo was the one who wanted to get strong quickly, and had agreed to evolve so early so that at least someone among the myriad traveling with the white-haired ‘elfin’ was strong enough to protect him, and everyone else.)
“I only have one Ice-type attack, and it’s on my black Gyarados. You think I’m a fool for rushing in alone?” he would snark back. There was no way he was going to risk it, especially when it came to… damn. They really were missing one type subclass, and it had to be the most powerful one, to boot!
“Okay, so I don’t know if you took up or had any literature classes in university, so… haven’t you noticed why the name of that quest was ‘the Shadow over Asper’?” he would pose the hypothetical question.
After a few moments of silence, he would answer the question if the other was stumped.
“That’s because it was, quite literally, an allegory for Lovecraft’s the Shadow over Innsmouth. Story about a guy who went back to his ‘hometown’, only for things to start going really weird. And then it was the fish creatures. All of the townspeople turned into fish creatures after a certain point in their lives.”
Did he have to give the other the rundown for the actual story before making the comparisons in-game?

Josh hadn't considered that; was there some hidden option he didn't see in his UI, making it more difficult to evolve his Pokémon? Some of the level requirements for evolution, particularly for dragon Pokémon, were daunting. He had been playing for what, almost eight months, and Ares was still a Charmeleon?
Having had substantial experience in the Arena himself, Josh knew its ins and outs well... except at the very hardest difficulty. It was part of why he was holding off so long on getting a Skarmory. "If you have good supports, you don't need a type advantage to win in Colossal Battles. Just Buff the hell out of your damage dealers and it'll go down really quickly. Tarukaja's your Gyarados' best friend," he tried to teach Altair , assuming the Gyarados used primarily melee attacks.
Josh would indeed give his friend the silent, stumped treatment. "Thankfully I never had to read Lovecraft in lit class," he replied. "I was there only for the DNA. Ice-type ride Pokémon are few and far between, and Articuno are fast. Even what I witnessed was horrible... and I'm not sure it was worth the trouble. I really... don't want to have to go back there ever again." Little did he know how great of a compulsion he would have to return there in pursuit of the Seer class in order to rematch a certain fly-beast...

And there he was again with the one-track mind!
“You may say that now, but wait until they drop that… the option to fight a Very Rare Pokémon in the Arena,” he would hum. There was word on the street that there was some kind of special Colossal Battle coming soon, however the main problem here was that it involved most likely the highest-leveled players that were active across the North American server.
“Who knows what a Very Rare battle out there looks like when it finally drops. Not everything can brute-forced alone, you know?” he added. He’d seen this before—almost all the time in Eorzea, if he was being honest.
About how the roulettes would always come out of nowhere with some surprise mechanic that everyone had forgotten, and was forced to rely on all of a sudden.
(This was why he was always saving Sidra’s ass whenever they ran their weekly roulettes there. She would insist on always taking the lead, and he’d be forced to go on the defensive and save her proverbial ass from being owned!)
“They never taught you anything about Lovecraft? Odd. Weird-ass lit class you had. Well, since you don’t know the rundown, might as well give you the entire thing.”
He would clear his throat before taking a sip from the frothy shake to gather his thoughts.
“Alright, so we have our average Plain John here, right? He decides it’s time to check out this place he’d found off the beaten path—the story calls him Robert, but you’re free to interpret whatever the name of the person is since the name ‘Robert Olmstead’ was only in Lovecraft’s footnotes for this. Anyway, the place, hilariously—or ironically, don’t know which is your forte—is called Innsmouth. This place, built near the water, used to be prosperous shipbuilding center and port of call.”
He would take a few moments to compose himself with another sip of the shake, before he continued.
“However, after the War of 1812, the place started falling into decline. People around the other nearby villages put it down to some hocus pocus, superstitious shit—which, ding ding—was apparently true all along. But you know how fictional folk love coloring their tales to attract the crowds. Anyway, there’s like, only one human occupant in the entire place asides from the narrator himself, though the rest of the ‘people’ that live in Innsmouth just leave him alone because he’s a drunk. Take note of that fact—that this guy’s a drunk—because it’ll be important once I get to the next part.”
Before he could continue, though, they were interrupted with the arrival of their food.
Oh, god, that smelled fantastic.

"Mmm, of course," the child hummed in reply, "I'm nowhere close to ready for it. I think you're expected to come into battle with completely maxed skill trees. Kind of like what... in the Tainted Barnyard, that fly-beast that killed Alicia Westfield and I in one attack. It felt like a superboss from the start." He knew what he had to do to even have a hope at defeating it... and unlocking the Seer class would take him down a dark path he didn't want to think about. Especially not over a meal.
He would silently listen to Altair before eventually zoning him out. The story was getting a bit too long-winded, as good of a summary as it was. He would be broken out of his daydream with the smell of a grilled chicken sandwich lathered in barbecue sauce. "This smells wonderful." The cheddar fries also looked lovely. There was so much cheese on them that he could barely see the fries themselves! He might have to dip the ones on the bottom in the sauce that leaked through the top...

He would immediately reach for some chips when the other—
“Did you two just get one shot’ed by an area boss?” he would blink, unimpressed. He knew the dangers of these—there were instances scattered all over Eorzea that would suddenly sic some kind of overpowered mob straight at the player and result in a character ‘game over’ if they weren’t sufficiently prepared.
“You two are nuts,” he would sigh as he reached for the tuna salad sandwich first and took a bite out of it. Tasty, but not quite as good as the shit down by those stalls all over the Big Apple!
“Anyway, about that drunk guy I was talking about—he’s one of the only fully human occupants of the village, and since you know, stereotypical actions of drunk people are disregarded and not taken seriously, people just leave him alone. But here’s the weird thing: the drunk actually speaks the truth—as long as you offer him a bottle of alcohol. You know. Bring an offering, get an answer kind of set up.”
He would cram more potato chips in his mouth after that.
“So. John Doe—Robert, what have you—comes and brings him a bottle of booze, so the drunk guy—let’s call him Allen for brevity’s sake—starts sharing with him what he knows about the town. So like, the place doesn’t seem like it’s mostly deserted, it’s just that—he keeps repeating to our poor narrator here not to go out in the evening unless he wants to see what’s really happening. So obviously…”
He would take another bite from the sandwich.
“Curiosity killed the Purrloin. Of course it fucking will.”
