It was time to find a...what was it, a squirrel, a walking mushroom, or a pink evil-looking fairy. He held the pictures in his UI, floating on the left side of his vision, just so that he could remember how they looked like. Okay, he didn't actually need a picture of a Shroomish after staring at it for a while, but he had to admit that he had tried to poke some mushrooms that looked like the Pokemon, only to find out that they were just...mushrooms. It was weird - it felt like they could've had eyes and looked at him, but they didn't. They just had spots.
Anyway, he was told that there was a higher chance of running into those pink Pokemon at night, with the trade off that the squirrels are less likely to appear, if not at all. They should be sleeping, after all, like real squirrels, and honestly, Arthur was not opposed to keeping the fairy if he managed to find it, compared to the squirrel where he was likely to trade it afterward (or begrudgingly keep it for additional tower challenges, if he wanted to do this again. Maybe not. One solo tower challenge was enough for his life time).
Hie was out on the field along with Kanya and Eru - the first two having good eyesight in the dark, while the last one just being around for additional support. And she still remembered the forest somewhat, or so she said, though things were hazy at times. Above them, a full, white moon was shining brightly, giving them much needed light while going through the paths.

Their surroundings were mainly quiet, leaves rustling in the wind, a chitter of something else unrecognized, unfamiliar. He thought he could hear owl hoots, or rather, Pokemon hoots. An owl Pokemon, he supposed? There were owl Pokemon, he recalled, in the games that he played before, but the name escaped him now. Anyway, it wasn't like they appeared in the spawn list that he pulled up online, so there was little use thinking about it.
Hie sniffed around, but had learned his lesson the last time, and made sure to stay close. At night, he was even more likely to get lost, so Arthur also told Kanya to keep an eye on him. The Floragato had his vines ready in case something would jump out, but for now, everyone was a little on edge, waiting and watching.
<It's kind of chilly tonight, isn't it?>
Eru had been floating above Arthur's shoulder, flapping her wings slightly to stay roughly around the same height. The trainer gave her a furrowed side eye, but then figured that she was just making conversation to lighten the mood (or distract them from being too tense).
❝Are nights always chilly in Birchwood?❞
<Yeah, I guess they are. The leaves are always reddish, not like me.>

A shrubbery to the right rustled a little more violently than it should, signaling the appearance of a wild Pokemon. The four of them stood to attention with bated breath, wondering what would appear from the surface growth, only to reveal a scuttling Paras climbing up the tree trunk. It was disinterested in the party, though it did lock eyes with them for a moment, glowing in the night, before carrying on its merry way, disappearing into the tree branches above them.
<Uh, I guess we keep moving?> Kanya asked, not used to just...letting go a potential fight.
❝Yeah, we're not here to train, we're here to hunt.❞ the night was still young and there were still plenty of walking to do, so he gestured his Pokemon to push on ahead, hoping that their succeeding encounters would be a success, or just as harmless as that Paras was.

Whenever there was a gap between the trees, Arthur would look up and see starlight. It was a different kind of view compared to the Steppes, even if it was the same generated night sky. However, he could not keep his eyes up for long - there was plenty to be concerned about on the ground, and it felt like there were sometimes when the noises picked up - life suddenly making itself known to the group, surrounding them, potentially watching, potentially ignoring their existence, their interference in their territory.
<I hope we don't face anything like what we fought the first time we met.> Eru muttered.
<Though there's more of...whatever that was still around, right?> Kanya was looking at Arthur, expecting an answer when his trainer had nothing suitable.
❝So it appears.❞ he didn't know what was being done about it, though. At this point it really did seem like a feature of the game rather than a bug (which was what a few conspiracy theorists were suggesting, or something about the "game running away from the devs"), but if the devs hadn't done anything to step in at this point, then it felt more like something that required collaborative effort to be conquered. It was not Arthur's original goal to fight this corruption - he hadn't been formally introduced to it yet, not like the other players probably, but it was something to test his strength on, and it did kind of threaten the whole world (this world).

At one point, the trees suddenly got denser, and there were many loose vines and low hanging branches. Their pace slowed as Arthur, the tallest in the group, had to carefully push the branches away, and they were sharp and menacing, black under the lack of light. Kanya was not tall enough for this to be a huge problem, and so he was ducking every now and then, though with the low-height shrubbery he often had his fur caught between thorn-like stems.
When Arthur was pushing some things away, he felt one of those things to be a lot more solid than the others - it was round and a little squishy, and then--
❝Ow!!❞ whatever he touched bit his hand, and as he had been in the darkness for the while, his eyes adjusted to seeing the thing in front of him curl to sink its tiny teeth - it was a bug! What kind of bug he had no idea, it didn't look anything like a Caterpie, but he tried to shake it off, and Kanya had to do a bit of a leap to slap the bug away in an attempt to encourage it to let go. Thankfully, it did soon enough, skittering away under a bush.

Arthur gritted his teeth as they moved away from the low-hanging vines and branches and into somewhere that was a more pleasant walk. The bite drew blood, but it didn't look deep. However, it began to itch painfully, making him wonder if his reduce pain settings were even working (or was this an allergic reaction or something? Could his digital body get reactions?) Thankfully, Eru was out on the field already, and used a healing Fairy Wind to soothe the itchiness. She chided him to be more careful, which felt kind of silly coming from a talking cotton ball, but she had a point; the next bite, if that happened again, could be deadly. Maybe even this one was, but the UI didn't say anything about him being poisoned or something...

Huh, it looked like Arthur was not the only one who had gotten hurt this evening. There was a sudden groaning and moaning nearby, but it didn't sound like a person's, and the trainer could not see any dots on the map to indicate another player. Trying to find the source of the noise, he allowed Hie to take the lead, as it looked like the pup had already sniffed something different in the air; his nose twitching and him letting out something of a low, quiet bark. He then took off to the northwest and the rest of the group followed until they reached a notably larger tree than the others, with a big indent in the middle.
In that space was a squirrel, curled up and in pain - the same one that Arthur remembered in the picture. He pointed at it, looking rather excited, before then realizing that this might be another quest he would get unwittingly roped into, and that killed his excitement for a bit. No such thing popped up though, and its health bar, for some reason, was still full. Did the game want him to attack it while it was down like this? Even he had standards.
The Poochyena had already approached the Skwovet and sniffed its body curiously. It did not seem outwardly injured nor had any wounds, and there was no blood around it. It was just groaning with its arms splayed out. When he asked what was wrong, not expecting the answer, the squirrel suddenly lifted its head up, surprised, blinking, before deciding that this trainer didn't seem to be dangerous.
It then opened its mouth, notably empty, and pointed at it a few times. And then it laid its head back on the ground, whimpering.
<Err, is it..?> Kanya didn't want to state the obvious because it seemed rather pathetic, but his trainer shook his head.
He then approached the squirrel and poked its belly. ❝Hey.❞
The Skwovet raised its head again.
❝I'm not the type who gives out a free lunch. You'll join us if we get you something to eat, yeah?❞
The squirrel nodded vigorously before opening its mouth and pointing at it again.
Arthur sighed. ❝Fine, fine, I have a few more poffins in here...wait, no? Oh c'mon, you probably haven't even tried them. They're good, my dragon loves 'em!❞
<But I'm vegan!> the squirrel cried.
Arthur had an incredulous, are you serious kind of look.

So that was how the party began berry hunting in the evening, under a starry night sky. Arthur ensured to put a marker on his map so that even if there was no clear way to navigate back here, they would at least have a sense of direction on where to go afterward. He also asked Hie to remember the scent if possible, and it would basically put the dog's tracking skills to the test. He wasn't sure if the Poochyena fully understood the instructions, but he seemed eager to please, wagging his tail to and fro.
Thankfully, the nearest berry trees were probably a five minute or so walk from where they were. Arthur didn't know how to climb a tree, so he asked Kanya to cut some down with Magical Leaf. The Floragato looked at him like he was crazy and just told him that he would handle it. From there, the cat effortlessly climbed up the tree and harvested the berries cleanly. Arthur also let his Monferno out to help - he did feel embarrassed that his suggestion could've easily meant that the berry would've been ruined.
The inventory feature allowed him to carry a good amount of blue berries back to the Skwovet, who immediately perked up even before they got really close. He munched messily on a good chunk of them before starting to stuff his cheeks with more, and once they were filled up, the squirrel was happy as it could be, and gave a thumbs up when Arthur showed him the Poke Ball.
Phew, they could finally continue with that damn tower race, thank God.
