For once, Josh wasn't holding Raiden's reins; instead, two black-striped yellow Pokémon eggs occupied the Zebstrika's saddle. Instead, the young boy was astride a Boltund that was slightly smaller than the horse's size, thanks to the HUGE SEAL on his Poké Ball. Moving it around was a pain in the butt; perhaps buying some more through the Arena Shop wouldn't be a bad idea.
A joyride wasn't why they were here, though; the boy had hit a snag during his race with Alicia Westfield and Kyukon . Both the electric-types stood in place near the Tall Grass. With the Zebstrika low on charge, he nuzzled against the iron spire and waited for a lightning bolt to strike it. For if there was a location with electric surges strong enough to accelerate the growth of his two babies within their Eggs, it was the Surge Steppes.

It would not take long for lightning to strike the spire, Raiden flinching and rearing from the overload of electricity. Josh could have sworn he saw the eggs move and wriggle while the Zebstrika was catching his breath. He reined the Boltund toward his partner and reached toward both the eggs. They were definitely moving like they hadn't before.
"Are you two okay?" he asked Thunder and Storm from within their shells. They were, of course, too young to respond. They were either writhing in pain or reveling from within from the large influx of electricity. Even after several minutes, the motion didn't calm down; it was more a sign of the latter. How close were they to hatching?

The lightning strike was loud, but it didn't seem to affect the eggs on Raiden's back much. If anything, they enjoyed the stormy conditions. What didn't seem to enjoy them was a Ponyta that whizzed past the Zebstrika and Boltund in fright. Just what was it fleeing from? And why couldn't Josh run into one when he needed one before?
"Ixion..." he moaned, thinking about the fiery horse that wound up who knows where. He wondered if the Pokémon would evolve as soon as they reunited, particularly with him being in possession of a FIRE STONE. There was no time for that, though; they needed to find a certain Pokémon and high-tail it back to the Tower. "Raiden, Thunder, and Storm - no time to waste! Let's keep looking. Deeper into the prairie if we have to."

With the Ponyta long gone, the Steppes were once again filled only with wind, thunder, and the clacking of hooves. "Should probably get away from these pillars..." Josh trailed off, having confidence that he as a BOLTER could withstand direct lightning strikes now. They wouldn't exactly be pain-free, but they would be very much survivable.
At long last, Thunder and Storm had calmed down; though their eggs weren't motionless, they had moved less than they did before. It was a sign that they had survived the high voltage and perhaps even had a growth spurt from within. He would have to dismount to check their weight in order to see, and time was still ticking... even though he couldn't see his time outside the Challenge Tower...

Distracted by the search growing too long, Crash made an uncommanded rear and began to NUZZLE the eggs containing Thunder and Storm. This stirred the Zapdos embryos within, their chirping noises penetrating their shells. "Crash, stay focused!" Josh chided the electric dog. "We don't have time to--"
Before Josh could get too far, he caught sight of a Duraludon charging a HYPER BEAM. "Raiden, look out!" With full manual control, he ordered a leap from Crash, the Boltund sailing over Thunder, Storm, and Raiden with incredible agility. Raiden gasped as Josh and his electric-type landed right in the path of the normal-type attack.

Josh's entire field of vision turned to an orange-white as he and his Boltund felt a burning sensation that even his KINDLER class couldn't fully suppress. The beam of pure hatred engulfed the boy scout, his dog, and his electric horse, the HYPER BEAM inflicting hundreds of damage upon them all. Had he assigned himself the SWEEPER class instead of the TANK class, he easily would have whited out on the spot. Although powerful, he survived the onslaught.
With the Duraludon reeling after such an attack, he crawled off his now-fainted Boltund and recalled it. Out of range of the combat encounter, the steaming Gym Leader, covered in bleeding burns, fast-traveled to the THUNDERFALL SHRINE. It would put him even farther behind in the race, but keeping his Pokémon out of the Everworld was far more important.

By the time Josh had returned to the Surge Steppes, he had received a notice that a wild Nosepass had fled from him due to straying too far from the encounter zone. What a relief; with his Ironsmith class on, the wild's magnetic body would have made it impossible for him to escape combat, even with a mount.
The two flying-type chicks dug their tiny talons into Raiden's saddle, the Zebstrika galloping alongside Josh's Boltund as they returned to their primary objective. The Bolter needed to track down a second-generation Pokémon, and his best odds of finding one were in the Surge Steppes.

Riding next to the two chicks, Josh waved toward them, making a funny face that children would typically appreciate. "Hi Thunder! Hi Storm!" he greeted the two, though they were too young to reply with anything except chirps and noises other tiny birds made.
Glad he could spend more time with them while they were young, for they didn't count against the active Pokémon limit, Josh let his Zebstrika take the lead. Now he was the one distracted, the hidden timer still counting up. He would even take a Mareep at this point. Mega Ampharos could fly, to his recollection!

Thunder and Storm chirped loudly as they watched a wild Ponyta run alongside Raiden, cheering the fire-type on. It was as though they were goading it to pick up the pace. What was with all these Ponyta when Josh didn't need one anymore? There were three Pokémon he could catch here that would fulfill the Tower's condition, and with every minute that passed, he would have to push even harder.
As long as the Ponyta remained in the Tall Grass, Josh would give the wild its wish. "You wanna race, let's race!" he called out toward them, the electric dog joining the two horses in an impromptu contest of speed.

The blazing horse could put on a lot of speed, able to keep up with Raiden and Crash for quite some time before at last falling off. Were this not the Surge Steppes, Josh was certain that the fire-type could have outpaced him. Their environment gave the Bolter's electric-types that extra kick they needed.
Josh's two Zapdos chicks appeared to be having fun, too; had the desire of high speed thrills rubbed off on them while he carried them on the backs of his Pokémon? Only the Father Zapdos in Mistra knew. Their distraction ending, Josh reined his Boltund back across the Tall Grass. The amount of time he had lost was beginning to get concerning...

After Josh watched the Ponyta run away, he set up a movement macro for Crash and Raiden to circle the tall grass, letting him do other things with the downtime. His first thing was to check what Alicia and Kyukon were up to. Both of them seemed to be offline. Given how late it was, it made sense.
Shaking his head, he wasn't sure how much longer he could remain online himself. Tomorrow was Commander night at Cabbages and Kings in Peoria Heights, and it was not a short trip from his house. Between the drive there, getting lunch on the way there, and supper on the way home, he would be gone almost all day, and possibly too tired to log in tomorrow. "Come on... this is starting to get a bit silly..." he muttered as he unsuccessfully tried to rein his Boltund out of the way of a PLUCKING Doduo .

Such were the dangers of setting movement macros; disabling them was an extra step to taking manual control of his Pokémon. Even so, it was good having downtime to do things like inventory management. With raid time rapidly approaching, having all of his important items toward the top of his inventory was important.
If there was one thing Josh wished he could do in the moment, it was check on his time in the race. That, though, would be hidden from his UI until he returned to the Tower Challenge. There were three Pokémon that fit the bill, not just one. Where was... any one of them?

The sound of clacking hooves caught Josh's attention as another Ponyta galloped alongside Raiden, this one able to more easily keep up with his slower speed as he rounded the west side of the largest Tall Grass patch he knew of. "You know, I'm wondering if Beta Tester might be something to look into going into myself," he mumbled to himself as he turned away from the blazing equine. "Perhaps there's a glitch out there that allow for RNG manipulation. That would certainly be useful."
Wishful thinking; any glitches that dramatically impacted gameplay experiences likely got patched. It was something to ponder; on top of that, Shalin Nariya had shown Josh the power of glitches. Though even sitting on Xira's back was too much vibration for him, there were other extremely fast bipedal Pokémon he could use the class to hop onto. Imagine the kind of speed a Lucario could reach!

What kinds of Pokémon were out there that could learn Extreme Speed, anyway? Josh thought about it as Raiden continued to circle the Tall Grass, the boy reprogramming his macro to move counterclockwise instead of clockwise due to pressure building on his left hip. He already had a Growlithe, which could learn it once it evolved. He knew the Dratini line could, and Lucario could, as well.
Togekiss and Linoone could. Linoone in particular sounded fun. It would require a Huge Seal pumped up to the maximum height possible, and perhaps even a slightly higher seat than normal, but riding the straight-line sprinter sounded like a lot of fun. Perhaps for a Colossal Battle next month, he would track one down.

As Josh was engrossed in researching which Pokémon could learn Extreme Speed, a small earthquake brought all of his Pokémon to a halt, the team bracing themselves. Little could protect Josh and Crash from the underground ambush of a wild Drilbur's DRILL RUN, incapacitating the Boltund in a CRITICAL HIT and leaving Josh's rear bleeding badly. "Yeow!!" the boy yelped, feeling like his lower cheek was on fire from being bored into.
Activating his RUNNING SHOES, the trainer fled on foot, Thunder and Storm both in a panic as the Zebstrika fled for a different patch of Tall Grass. While this wasn't much slower than riding a Pokémon, it would get more tiring. Alkaid ' words of never going on an adventure without a healer rung in his mind...
