Shalin never thought she would be back to the Whimsical Woods so soon. This time, she wouldn't be flitting with the fairies. She was on a mission: to expand upon her small army of bug Pokémon and unlock their full potential. To become a Catcher who could bring out the full potential in insect Pokémon. Beta Tester and Catcher were two classes that had great synergy in her eyes: why not use the extra volume from the Beta Tester sitting on their wings to make their Bug Buzz attacks hit harder?
Other than Olivia, there was only one bug-type on her roster that was large enough that she could train in that way. Clicking open the Poké Ball surrounded with her second Huge Seal she purchased not long ago, a Beedrill the size of a Rapidash flew out of it, her shuddering wings likely audible for quite the distance. The yellow and black bee embraced Shalin with her two foreleg stings as much of the mammal wildlife in the surrounding area fled upon hearing the terrifying drone.

”Somehow, I just knew it was you.” Alicia commented abruptly as she walked over. ”You can hear that Beedrill’s wings from miles away I imagine.””Yeah!” Nym chirped from the pinkette’s shoulder, poking her head out. ”All the ‘bzz’ and ‘brr’ and ‘zzzzing’ is impossible to miss!” Then the sushi dragon quirked an eyebrow. ”Waaaaaaait… Beedrill can be more then angry sting-y jerks?””Sure looks like it. A real breath of fresh air, isn’t it?” Alicia noted. Then she gave the little one a flick on the head. ”Also, that was a rude way to put it.””Owie!” The Tatsugiri exclaimed, shying away and covering her head with her fins. ”That hurt!””Then think more about how you say certain things.” the pinkette finished, sighing. ”Sorry about her, Shalin…”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-]

Considering that a white, translucent saddle was on one of Queen Zing's wings, it couldn't have been anyone but Shalin, could it? Even among insectile Pokémon, the frequency of a Beedrill was among the highest. How could she even see when fluttering about so rapidly? Or was that the point: to embrace the carnage and chaos that came with the flighty bug-type?
"Not every queen rules with an iron sting, hehe!" the giant wasp giggled, tickling Shalin with the cone surrounding her rear sting. They both seemed to have a laughing contest, Sandy shooting a stink eye toward the girly duo. What was so funny?
At last recovering from her mess of laughter, Shalin stepped away from the Beedrill, then addressed Alicia and Nym. "She's a bit eccentric... more so than I am, even. It would still be ill-advised to be on her bad side, though. She's got just as mean of a sting as the stereotypical ones." As if goaded to show it off, the Beedrill extended the barb out of her rear, the yellow and black needle large and long. Though venom was their main weapon, even being stabbed by that stinger looked painful.
Shalin stood next to the translucent wing and put her hands on it. As she was about to sit on the seat hidden atop it, a UI message prevented her from doing exactly that:
Error> You must be at least level 9 to mount this Pokémon.
Dejected, Shalin held her head down, Queen Zing walking toward er and wrapping one of her forelegs around her to try to comfort her. "Guess we're doing this with a different Pokémon, Alicia..."

Alicia couldn’t help herself. She heaved a deep sigh and shook her head as she looked over the Beedrill’s wing. This was Shalin, she was quickly learning to look for saddles in non-sensical places. While it was phased out because Shalin’s level was insufficient, Alicia could see what was going on. And then Queen Zing started tickling Shalin. Alicia dang near had a heart attack at the sight. Then she looked closer and realized the actual barb didn’t appear to be extended. Putting a hand over her heart, she heaved a relieved sigh. Because that had the potential to be another White Out. Which the Beedrill was all too keen to confirm upon being side-long goaded by Shalin’s commentary. The pinkette went pale at the sight of the stinger proper. ”… Shalin? Please don’t scare me half-to-death again. I think I actually took damage from that bit of fright.” Alicia commented. She hadn’t, in actuality, but it sure felt like it. ”… I’m sorry…” Nym squeaked, looking to be compressing her body as much as she could. ”A-Anyways!” Alicia commented, pulling a Pokeball out. ”While not ideal, there is someone we can fly on, at least. Though she’s not your speed exactly…”The hero-to-be tossed the Pokeball, and Sylvene appeared with a piercing cry. Still with the same floral crown as her time in her Pidgeotto stage unfortunately. She hadn’t been able to update it to match her evolved state yet. ”Well met this day. And what have I been called out for?””Well… We were hoping to take a trip through the skies. And with your recent evolution-“ Alicia began. Only to be cut off by a glare. ”Do you think me a common bird!?” Sylvene exclaimed. ”That I’ll just roll over and let just any climb all over my back with their dirty mitts?””N-No? Which is why I was going to ask-“ the pinkette tried again, only to be cut off again. This time by a small gust of wind as the Pidgeot took off sans any rider at all, and took to roost on the branch of a nearby tree. Then the avian scoffed, turning her beak up in what was presumably disgust at the idea. ”… This is why I tried to find myself a Noibat earlier…” Alicia bemoaned softly, face palming. Nym giggled a bit at her surrogate mother’s misfortune. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

Indeed, if the Beedrill was anyone else's, the venom from that sting could have easily incapacitated her, causing her to reappear back at the last Shrine she visited. It showed the level of trust the two had with one another, even though Queen Zing hadn't spoken to her yet. If it was like any of her other Pokémon, she would sound PokéSpeech in due time.
Shalin, and Alicia if she partied up with her, would hear the ever-familiar level advancement fanfare once the Beedrill was done making her laugh uncontrollably. "I didn't know you were afraid of bees - I'm sorry," the Beta Tester apologized. "I used to be afraid of them in the real world, and have actually used her a coping mechanism to get over it. That's part of why I want to fly on her. Just one level away now..."
Shalin laughed at how prissy Sylvene grew -- even more so after evolution. "My, she sure is high maintenance, isn't she? I don't think she'd let me anywhere near her wing, anyway." Though she had been on the wings of insect Pokémon for the blistering fast frequency, she wasn't beyond seeing what a slower wing would feel like. It might have been for the best that the Pidgeot flew away. With a demeanor like that, the bird may have bucked her off for real.
"I do have a Pokémon that I can fly on as a backup. Dondon, let's go!" Hurling a Poké Ball above her and near her, the Tropius within landed. The girl looked ready to clamber between the grass-type's leafy wings and go for her first true flight on one of her own Pokémon. As fun as riding the Whimsical Woods' fae was, that didn't truly count!

Alicia shook her head. ”It’s not that I’m afraid of bees. I was spooked for your sake because I didn’t realize a Beedrill’s stingers weren’t always extended. From the images, I always thought the abdomen stinger was just oddly colored. So when you were having your little laugh fit I thought you were getting sliced up like some b-movie slasher flick…” Then the pinkette sighed. ”But she’s clearly a sweetheart, and I’m sorry for fretting needlessly.”Smiling, she walked over and held a hand out towards Queen Zing’s head. If given the okay, she’d gently pat and pet the bee on the head. ”It’s nice to see some subversions of expectations.”Which perfectly lead into commentary towards the Pidgeot Alicia called a team mate. ”You should’ve seen her when she was a Pidgey.” she groused out. ”She was actually worse then before until Tikani gave her the what-for on my behalf. When she mellowed out a bit as a Pidgeotto, I was hopeful she’d age into a graceful and tolerant queenly personality. Not regress back to this bratty overly complicated twit.””I can hear you.” Sylvene called from her perch in annoyance. ”Good!” Alicia yelled back, earning an indignant squawk from the Pidgeot. ”Sylvene’s got no chill! Hehehe!” Nym chimed in. ”No chill indeed.” Alicia agreed as Shalin brought out her Tropius. ”Oh right! You had one of these! Man, I wanted this species to be so good when I first saw one in Ruby! Where’d you find him, by the way? I’d been meaning to ask.”The Tropius might be big enough to carry both of them if she were allowed on? And a Tropius of her own would be a nice touch. With her love of the Gardener class the great dinosaur would definitely be big enough. … It would be another Ice weakness in her line up though. She was very happy Shalin helped her with Freezer requirements. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

"That's one thing that's neat about them!" Shalin replied, Queen Zing's compound eyes blinking as she would attempt to return the wasp's affection by embracing her with the flats of her stings. If taken positively, she would even buzz for a second or two to tickle her! "Sorry, sometimes she can be a bit too friendly," the bug trainer apologized as she listened to how her friend's Pidgeot mellowed out over time. "I want to go on a wing run so badly, but I just need that last push to get there in level. One more Instance should do it."
As if teasing her trainer, the Beedrill would let go of Alicia, crawl toward Shalin, and let her wings run. The pitch on them was so much higher than Flit's wings, an indicator of how much greater their frequency was. She looked mesmerized just watching them... until Dondon craned his neck toward her and gently bopped her. "Right! I found him on Beta Island. You'll need a Commuter Pass to get there... but I'm sure a player of your caliber has one."
With that, she walked toward the dinosaur's back and sat on one of the grass-type's wing-leaves, even though she had no intent to ride the Tropius any way except normally until she was familiar with how he flew. "You coming, too?"

For a moment, Alicia was concerned she got herself in over her head as the Beedrill moved to basically hug her. But she invited this on herself and the wasp was gentle enough with Shalin. So she took the chance on the metaphorical reed and was pleasantly surprised when it held weight. Then Queen Zing buzzed, and Alicia felt like she’d sunk too deep into a massage chair when the vibration was turned up to max. Blinking a bit to reorient her vision, Alicia shook her head. ”Don’t be. I kinda invited this on to myself.””My head’s spinniiiiing!” Nym wailed, having been taken for a ride as well due to her contact with Alicia. ”Mind the collateral damage, buzz-brain!””Nym.” Alicia clipped out with annoyance towards the child she’d hatched out. ”What!? It’s not my fault!” Nym snipped back. ”You can fly right now, you could’ve easily pulled away.” the pinkette noted. ”…” the sushi dragon was oddly quiet after that. But she was getting an offer to ride. As well as an answer to the question she had. ”Cheers! I actually only recently got my pass. Too busy spending my bytes elsewhere for a while. Was just after the nonsense of Steel Chef, if you remember that.” Alicia answered, accepting Shalin’s and Dondon’s offer to ride with the glitch hunter. Sylvene scoffed and looked to be about to say something. But Alicia cut her off by returning her to her Pokeball, causing the bird to squawk indignantly as she disappeared. ”Thanks for the ride.”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

Shalin laughed on the inside upon hearing Nym's quips. The Tatsugiri was quite a bit smaller, so it tracked that the shaking would affect Alicia's partner more. "Don't remind me," she replied, tilting her head down. "It seemed like Chanda Mama favored more abstract dishes. I only made dishes that I'd want to eat, and apparently that was hurting me in the judging every single round."
Shalin made room for Alicia by scooting forward on Dondon's saddle, giving her plenty of room to hop on behind her. Once she was seated, a tutorial prompt came up, which she simply mashed through the opening textboxes of. "I don't need to read this; I remember the flying controls from when were in the Whimsical Woods." There were some key differences, though; Dondon could not easily hover. He would have to maintain a minimum speed to remain airborne.
With powerful flaps of his leafy wings, the Tropius took off, only able to roam the fields outside the forest proper. The forest was too dense for the large flying-type to fly through. "This is... quite different than soaring on a bug-type," she immediately noted aloud, feeling how momentum-based the flight was. "I think I actually like the zippy, flighty ones a little more," she whispered, hoping Dondon wouldn't hear her favoritism...

”I mean… I did a lot of the same in the first round. Until freaking…” Alicia began, only to stall out as she realized she couldn’t remember the person’s name. Wait, hadn’t she been someone who bought the Golden Tongue…? Which had the additional price of one’s true name… ”The crazy lady who opened with using the entire Milky Way. I can’t remember her name, and I think Fae Magics are at work causing that…”She did giggle a bit as Shalin smashed her way through prompts. ”I need to figure something out to appease Sylvene enough. I’m worried I’ll need to fly soon. And I don’t think I’ll be a high enough level to ride Venex in time. Or have an alternative mount ready.”She sucked in a sharp breath as Dondon took off, clutching at the part of the saddle she could reach. While game mechanics would likely make falling off terribly unlikely, it was still something that made her feel a bit more secure. ”I can imagine. Smoother, once they’re done gaining altitude at least.”She did catch Shalin’s whisperings regarding favored flying mounts. But she chose to not call her on it. What she did bring up, though… ”Uh… did you think to bring nets? Because if you didn’t I think we’re going to have to craft some on site.”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

"Feel you there," Shalin nodded in agreement. "And level 9 is too far away in time for the upcoming boss, I feel. So Dondon and my glitched ones are my only way to ride." As fun as it was riding Olivia, the speed at which her wings beat made it difficult to see. "I'm going to have to do a lot of training with Olivia and Sandy specifically." Hearing Alicia having similar problems with Sylvene, she tried to suggest something. "What if we caught Sylvene a big meal with the nets I brought?" Where Alicia didn't come prepared, Shalin did.
Once the Tropius reached a height just below the maximum, Shalin dove into her inventory to procure a pair of nets to catch small to medium-sized bug Pokémon in. "I've got one for you," she answered, carefully passing it to her before a reckless idea came to mind. With a grin on her face, she gripped her end of the saddle tightly while Dondon was gliding. Pulling both her legs to the same side, she slid down one of the grass-type's leafy wings and grabbed onto it.
A white trail of pixels flew from her lower body, the Tropius still maintaining lift somehow. Such was the nonsense Beta Testers were capable of. "Whoo-hoo!" she cried as the wingbeat coursed through her, Dondon's eyes shifting toward her in a confused look. The way the reins stretched looked wholly unnatural... yet she seemed fully able to control the Pokémon!

”Cheers.” Alicia chimed as Shalin indicated she had nets ready. ”Unlocking Catcher was kind of on a whim for me since I plan on grabbing a Scyther from The Creed at some point. Hopefully I can duck in and out real quick on that front, because I don’t really care for that Guild.”Swinging her borrowed net around to reduce air drag, she hummed at the thought. ”Either I get her an insectoid meal, or I fish something up by buying a Fishing Rod later. Or I find some snake pokemon. Sylvene expressed interest in eating some serpents that were at the start of a dungeon I went into with Josh. Something to ply her favor with to actually get a foot in the door.”And then Shalin decided to shift onto Dondon’s wing mid-flight. Her heart leaped into her throat. While it was ridiculous, as at worst Shalin would get shaken up by the fall. And if Shalin’s pain threshold was reduced rather than realistic, she might even bounce back from a ten-ish foot drop like it was nothing. But the math in her head and what humans should be able to tolerate left the rational and grounded part of herself panicked. ”Don’t lose your grip. It’s a bit of a trip down.” she commented, gripping her emotions and calming herself down. She’d be fine. The game’s systems wouldn’t let her be seriously wounded. It was probably one of the wing rides she’d be willing to try… She could probably deal with higher power flaps at a lower frequency. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

"Neither do I," Shalin answered as the Tropius began to glide, giving her a chance to converse with Alicia despite where she was sitting. "I've heard that they really don't like people who aren't focused on climbing the PVP ladder. That and once you get in, it's really hard to get out. Part of why I hopped into Mythstar myself." Between the other two guilds, Mythstar resonated most with the girl's love of the wild, as well as the love of exploring the unknown. Even on her relatively tame flight, a few white blocks trailed the Beta Tester, showcasing that sitting atop the grass-type's wing was almost certainly not intended by developers.
"I don't plan on it, hee hee!" the green-ette giggled as she spotted an Orbeetle ahead of them. "You should give it a try, too! It'll give you a lot of reach with that net!" she teased, doing what she could to try to convince Alicia to dip into Beta Tester herself. "If you don't, you might not be able to catch anything out here!"

”You could say that.” Alicia mused at the thought of the guild. ”And I worry about them. That kind of power-focused gaming almost always produces a kind of person I never want to be: a Meta-Slave… You might know the type. The cookie cutters that blindly make whatever build is ‘optimal’ for the season of competition in question, without actually understanding why it works. It just does because it’s that strong. Rows upon rows of same old, same old. Strong, yes, but you give up your identity in that case…”She then hummed a bit to herself. The Orbeetle would be an interesting attempt at catching with a net. Futile in the end given its teleporting ability, but interesting. And Shalin was egging her on to follow in the glitch hunters steps a bit again… She tossed her borrowed net up, and a small green mana circle formed on her palm. With a lash of her hand, vines emerged from the Gardener’s magical power, grasping the net’s handle, and she whipped the line of foliage forward. The Orbeetle, utterly caught off guard by the turn of events, buzzed furiously with its psychic power as the net neatly enveloped it. Slowly reeling her catch in, Alicia smirked to Shalin. ”Maybe one day. For now, I’m good.” It was a good natured tease, at least she intended it to be that way. Plus when the Orbeetle inevitably slipped free, it might be a bit closer for Shalin to make her own attempt easier. ”Kinda sad I can’t fish like this. I tried once with a rental net, but the system buzzed me out. Gotta pay the man it seems.”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeot) [4/4/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/4/4] Linz (Weedle) [-/-/-] Chryssi (Snom) [-/-/-] Shalin Nariya

Such was the nature of competitive battles, and to a lesser extent, competitive anything. With a large enough playerbase, it would not be hard to find the most effective strategies and weaponize them. "It's exactly why I prefer Instances. NPC battles. All this proc-gen content," Shalin reiterated her love of the struggle against the game itself, not just outsmarting one person. "If there's a ladder for most dungeons completed or highest-level Instance completed, that's the ladder I want on top of." She doubted such a ladder existed... though it would be interesting to have tournaments where two parties race to complete their own separate instances of identical Dungeons.
Just like a real-world randomizer tournament. Those were exciting to watch -- and to play in. There was nothing like the thrill of solving a puzzle where the only hint you got of where your opponent was at... was when it was too late.
"I'll hold you to that!" she continued to bother her friend about the asinine idea, only to have her attention captured by the Orbeetle teleporting to her side and beneath her. "Down, Dondon!" she ordered, the Tropius falling before flapping his long wing and letting the wild bug-type fall into the net. Despite her efforts to rotate it and keep the Orbeetle ensnared, it simply teleported out of the net -- and the turbulent air surrounding it.
