❝Yes, Tora?❞
<You're burning.>
The Scyther meant it literally: the white-haired young man was cloaked in a wispy, hot mist, almost like an aura if it weren't for the way it danced in the breeze. And on the tips of his shoulders and fingers, flames licked the air, hungry, wanting.
His Pokemon would not be able to see it, but in front of Arthur was the cause of the sudden combustion; a news alert from the system server:
Arthur looked at his fingers, smooth, barely worn. The fire danced, some of it sparking into embers, leaving the ground littered in grass that was slowly starting to join in the burning. ❝So it looks like.❞ he muttered before taking in a deep breath and dispersing the flames. He closed his fist tight in one motion and then let out an exhale. He then stomped the starting fire in a single motion, twisting his foot for good measure.
The Scyther, being very new to his trainer, was unsure of what to do. They were in the outskirts of town, and for some reason he was the only one outside of his Poke Ball, even if there was nothing to attack. Perhaps his trainer wanted company? Why him though, specifically?
❝Do you think it's still illegal to...❞ his voice trailed off before shaking his head. ❝Never mind.❞
Even if the Scyther only possessed an exoskeleton, he could only describe what he was feeling as his skin bristling. <It probably is. I do not recommend whatever it is you're thinking.>
The trainer let out a small noise in agreement.

There was no reason to be unreasonably frustrated at the winner, he kept telling himself. Like a good little boy, a behaved and proper son, the fault is towards him, as it always had been. He clenched his teeth before running his hand over his hair in an attempt to calm himself down.
<May I ask if we are looking for something specific?> the Scyther asked, walking beside him since the trainer was walking at a slow pace; there was no need for it to fly. The mantis had his blades close to each other, as if looking hesitant.
Arthur didn't respond to him right away, as if deciding whether the question was worth his time, but in the end, he decided that while he was in a foul mood, his Pokemon should not be the recipient of a cold shoulder. ❝Well, a Kalos Pokemon, or so I was told.❞
<Kalos?>
❝I did research and compared to what Pokemon live around here, and there are only two that fit the bill. One of them is a pumpkin, and the other is a bat.❞
The Scyther was not familiar with either of these Pokemon, but judging by description, he figured that he would be able to tell if they found either of those. <I see.> he was not sure what other questions or commentary he should offer. Perhaps the chance to talk again would appear once they encountered something on the road.

Briarbane was still decently populated, even if there were few players around. Arthur wondered what it must be like to live as an NPC, just walking around, being a part of the crowd, but not going anywhere in particular, disappearing only to reappear back where you started. It sounded like it was a plot fit for a sci-fi horror, but it would only be terrifying to anyone else except for the person trapped in the loop. How did it go again? One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
Speaking of which, a young man dressed in a rancher outfit approached him suddenly, waving like they were friends who hadn't seen each other in a while. He seemed very eager to tell him that he had lost his "precious something" somewhere around the area, and since it looked like the trainer was just walking around, maybe he could spare some time to find it? Arthur was in too poor of a mood to properly mask his reaction of irritation, but thankfully, the NPC was oblivious, or maybe he was just being considerate.
It pissed off Arthur that there was no reward condition. What was the point of giving a quest if nothing was given in return?
❝Fine, we might be here a while. What's your "precious something" look like?❞
The NPC was overjoyed to hear the trainer accept his request, but for some reason couldn't really explain the item to look for. Honestly, he just said that it would sparkle really brightly, it was hard to miss! (Then why don't you look for it? Arthur wanted to snark, but he knew that this was the nature of the NPC).
The young rancher said that he would just be waiting around this place for perhaps an hour or so since he was supposed to buy some groceries for his Pokemon ranch. Okay, seemed reasonable enough. He did a small, curt nod before continuing to walk.

❝Keep your eyes peeled for either a pumpkin, a bat, or something shiny.❞ he told the Scyther, who was indeed looking around and drinking in the sights. The Pokemon didn't remember much about the before -- before he became this boy's Pokemon. Maybe trees that towered over him, leaves, the soil, the ambiance of the forest (the jungle?), alive, changing with time, the seasons. But these were sensory and often static, and he never saw his own scythes in his field of vision.
<What do you think he lost, exactly?>
Arthur shrugged. ❝For all we know, it might be so abstract that all we can perceive is its shininess.❞ he wouldn't put it past UNOVR to make a JRPG reference like that. He wondered how that would look like now that he was in this deep dive form.

This particular stretch of road was deserted. The buildings didn't even have doors on them, or if they did, they were planted shut. As Arthur and Tora walked on this dusty road, a tumbleweed rolled by, bouncing lightly in the direction of the wind. The trainer completely ignored the ball until the Scyther pointed out (with one of his blades) that was actually a Pokemon, though it wasn't a pumpkin or a bat.
❝Wait, seriously?❞
The Scyther nodded. <I don't know what it's called, but yes. It had eyes.>
❝Not everything with eyes is a Pokemon.❞
<It really is a Pokemon though.>
Arthur decided that he would search it up later. Anyway, as previously mentioned, it was neither a pumpkin nor a bat (nor shiny), so he turned his attention to a closed door instead, curiosity getting the better of him. Without much warning, he turned toward it, making a sharp right. He climbed up a few short steps into a porch and eyed the door suspiciously, wondering if it was painted on or actually there. He let his fingers, perfectly unburnt, run across the section where the door met the wall. The hinge seemed real and felt like cool metal, but did it work? Only one way to find out.
He knocked on the door.

...no response.
Arthur turned to the Scyther with a glint in his eye.
<No, I am not cutting down the door.>
❝Aw why not?❞
<I've only known you for a couple minutes, but you're kind of a troublemaker, aren't you?> the Scyther's pose looking like it was crossing its arms, but instead of arms, they were blades.
Arthur folded his arms as well in response. ❝No, I'm a law-abiding citizen. There's also nothing in the law about cutting doors.❞ he added the last bit because he felt like the Scyther was going to say something, and he was, so the Pokemon opened his mouth and closed it, furrowing his brows. The trainer supposed that he wasn't being all that serious - it wasn't like he gave an explicit order, so Tora could still object to it with ease. What would happen if he decided to frame it like a command, though? Would he follow? This Pokemon's personality seemed it was less inclined to follow him...
<...someone will be very upset if I cut these doors.>
❝That someone isn't me, so there's no problem.❞
The Scyther grimaced. Was it too late to say that he would be the one upset rather than the owner, if there was one?

Suddenly, there was a muffled screech from behind the door. It didn't sound human, so that must mean that it could only be a Pokemon. Both of them turned to the door--❝Tora..!❞
The Scyther didn't need another word. With glowing blades, he gestured his trainer to step back before approaching the door and raising his arm. He slashed it down diagonally with a Fury Cutter followed by another, creating an X-shape on the door. That was enough to weaken it, so it was up to Arthur to kick it down and let the pieces fall.
The room was cloaked in darkness in contrast to the afternoon sun. There were some furniture around, but it was nothing that pointed to anything specific - a hallway carpet leading up to a staircase, to his left, a ranch-styled couch, a rug, a coffee table, but no windows? And to his right, a kitchen that was covered in glowing yellow eyes--
Wait.
The eyes had a mouth, and they screeched in unison before flying out, revealing their face to be attached to bodies of bats. Some scatter past the duo, while others fly in circles around the house, up the stairs, shrieking before most of them manage to escape into the heat of the sun. Few remained in the house, and one of them lunged right at Arthur before Tora quickly blocked its path with a quick slice.
<Not on my watch.>

”Agh! Crios, help me out please!””This is not going to end well.””But I’ve been looking for a Noibat for so long!””Very well…””There! Now I jus- EEEK!”Kyukon and his Scyther would hear a thud outside. And a pink-haired woman would sit up, rubbing her head with a groan. ”Oooow…”A quick look at the available marker window would reveal this was the one who barged in on his and Josh’s race. And ended up out-speeding both of them in the end despite starting a full set of floors late. It was indeed one Alicia Westfield, and her Onix towered above her, as if reaching for the skies. It seemed she had made a vain attempt to instigate an encounter with one of the bats that had been flushed out of the house. And in her haste she had been instead knocked off balance. Which resulted in her tumbling off of her Onix’s head and crashing back to the earth. ”I told you this wasn’t going to end well.” Crios rumbled as he lowered himself to the ground. ”Ha Ha…” Alicia snipped out with a dejected sigh. ”Though I don’t remember seeing this house last time I poked around here.””Perhaps you should investigate then?” the Onix suggested curiously. ”I cannot enter, unfortunately, but I doubt this area is much threat to you.””Keep any eye out just in case,” Alicia mused, flipping back to her feet. Looking into the door that was cut open, she blinked in surprise. ”Uh… Hi, Kyukon?”This was an unexpected meeting… ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/5/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Kyukon

Arthur did not expect that Tora's parry was enough to knock the bat out cold. It lay on the floor, unmoving, and for a moment he was worried it was dead or something. Then again, how things "died" in this world were pretty limited, and so if it were still here, that meant he could catch it. So he was about to pull out his last Poke Ball (for he knew that he needed more box space after this, which would be something he would need to consult the Byte Budget for) before he suddenly heard voices outside--none that he recognized, and were they arguing?--which was then followed by a loud THUD.
It made both of them flinch.
And when Arthur turned around, his expression did not settle. Tora noticed that not so subtly, the temperature around his trainer had started to pick up.
To further rub salt on the wound, the iron lady didn't even acknowledge him right after, choosing to chatter idly with her Onix (who was definitely not going to fit in the house; he could only see its lower body and its tail, which was like what, four of five boulders?). It was only after said Onix suggested she get closer to the door that she greeted him. His eyes narrowed, not only because she was still standing in the sunlight.
❝What are you doing here?❞
Tora watched his trainer carefully. The Scyther could tell that he was not happy about the interruption, or perhaps his thinly veiled anger was directed at the person on their doorstep in particular. Whichever case, he made sure that if something was going to go down, he was going to have to make a decision that he hoped would keep his trainer out of danger.
The first floor, at this point, seemed devoid of Noibats, unless others were hiding behind furniture.

While the area seemed to be getting hotter immediately around the Scyther’s partner, Alicia felt nothing but a deathly chill from the question. She swallowed dryly as she looked him in the eye. ”I, uh, poke around here from time to time. Trying my luck to find and catch a Noibat. Not so lucky so far…”This… was bad. She hadn’t anticipated that Kyukon would be this salty over losing the race. Or perhaps it was because of a bout of misfortune? If she recalled correctly he was really close before suddenly stopping… Okay actually she could see where the seething anger comes from if that were the case. She would be pretty ticked off to if she were subjected to that. ”Heeeeey isn’t that one of the guys you smoked just recently?” Nym asked as she poked her head out of Alicia’s hair, flashing a wicked grin. ”Slowpokes are- erp!”The Tatsugiri’s taunting was suddenly interrupted by Alicia clasping a hand over her entire head. The sushi dragon flailed and yelled in a muffled manner in the pinkette’s grip. ”Not. Now. Nym.” Alicia chastised with a sharp and low hiss to the words. ”I’m sorry… I don’t know why she has so much vitriol in her.”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/5/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Kyukon

Hm, so she was lured here by the Noibat? There were plenty that flew out just a minute or so ago, but he supposed that was why she fell. Still, for her to be here at the same time as him; it felt like there was an ulterior motive behind it that he didn't want to dismiss.
And then a weird Pokemon popped out of her hair, spouting some kind of shallow insult. Arthur would like to think that he would not be taunted by such immature tactics - he clamped down on his impulsive thoughts, squashing it, telling it not yet, because an abandoned house was not a proper place for a storm, especially when there was a clear gap in power between the two of them.
He smiled, and under the shadows of the house; his light blue eyes seem to glow. A trick of the light? ❝The apple does not fall far from the tree.❞
The trainer then resumed his business, bending down and tapping the Poke Ball on the unconscious Noibat by his feet. The capture was successful. ❝Just so you know, I need this for the Tower. If you like, we can trade after I'm done with it, if you have something to give up.❞
Arthur was, first and foremost, a businessman's son. He would rather see if there was something better that he could get from this than just burnt bridges.

Alicia could tell that Kyukon was… frustrated, to say the least. Or otherwise furious in some form or another. Definitely ran into a wall of some kind so close to a chance at victory. She would have groaned and lamented that no, she did not teach Nym to taunt people specifically. The sushi dragon seemed to have been born that way. But that was eclipsed by the sudden sense of potential danger. Of that anger and frustration potentially being released violently, and in her direction specifically. Subtly, muscles tensed as Fight or Flight kicked in. Thinking of all the ways she could bring such a confrontation to an end immediately. Nym’s Water Pulse would’ve been a good distraction. She had Shylla and Tikani with her who could both blanket the boy and his non-Grass types in disabling powders. Then Giyun could mop up whatever was still able to fight. In a perfect world she could stop him cold in moments if he turned violent. But that same perfect world would also have seen such conflict be unnecessary. Nym’s own words aside, Alicia had no desire to antagonize the Creed member before her. Then the need for concocting combat strategy passed, at least somewhat, and the pinkette allowed a brief sigh to escape her. He needed the Noibat he had tagged, huh? ”Kalos region or Dragon-type, I imagine.” Alicia mused clinically, theorizing what wall the boy had hit from the context clue. From what she’d read about the bat, those were the only aspects she could think of off of her head that would unlock his tower. Her eyes did light up a bit at the proposal of being able to receive the Noibat once Kyukon was done with it. A trade was more than acceptable, though she worried about how the Noibat would be once she got it. ”I have a few Pokemon I’m willing to part with. But if none catch your eye, I’d be willing to assist with looking for something that does. Or helping with a Colossal Battle later if needed.”Opening up her UI, she threaded through her box in viewing mode, and tacked off several boxes. On one, she did hesitate, before deciding to earmark it as well. And then she flicked the pictures outward to show to him. A Fidough, a Yamper, an Espeon, a Poochyena, and a Trubbish were what were shown immediately. ”There’s technically one more, but I’m not fully certain I want to let go of that Pokemon. But along with these, I also have a fossil for Shellder from the aborted Christmas event.”And if he wasn’t interested? Well, she’d hardly fault him and would let him go on his way. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/5/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Kyukon

❝Kalos.❞ he clarified, feeling a small trickle of respect at how quickly the other trainer had picked up on why he targeted the Noibat specifically. He supposed that was the level of expertise he could expect if someone was well-versed and caught up with all of the generations of Pokemon. He certainly had a disadvantage there, and he imagined that it would be too late to start memorizing the Pokédex.
He nodded once at the proposition, finding that a favor from her did sound plenty helpful. He did want to challenge the Colossal again at some point for those monthly Arena Points, or perhaps a chance to catch a Pokemon that he wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. Nonetheless, hearing that she had Pokemon to trade also intrigued him, because he did imagine that someone of her level would have a lot of extras lying around.
When he received the pictures in his own UI, his face scrunched up; it was clear that most of these Pokemon were unfamiliar to him, save for the Poochyena (which he already owned) and the Espeon (it was hard to forget any of the Eeveevolutions, and he was even acquainted with the newest one, at least by appearance). As for the fossil, hm, did she mention Shellder? He recalled that was not a fossil Pokemon, unless the game decided to mark it that way. That one did not really interest him.
❝What was the last one you are unsure of?❞ he asked, ❝It would be nice to know the full range of choices before I decide, especially since...❞ he hesitated for a moment, more of annoyed with himself for lack of knowledge, ❝I don't know some of these.❞ he supposed he could already make some educated guesses. Yamper looked like an Electric type, which did seem like a pretty good choice. The Tower Challenge basically showed him that the only Electric type he had was Buru, and she was a Snubbull. There was also the matter that his only Psychic move was under Mantyke, so the Espeon sounded promising...
The Scyther's sigh of relief did not go unnoticed by his trainer, and Arthur looked at him with quizzically (partially also a, Were you really thinking I was going to do something?) to which Tora eyed back with a, Oh yes, you looked like you were going to throw hands.
Suddenly, behind the trainers, there was a sound of frantic wings flapping and something falling on the floor but not breaking. The stairs to the second floor were behind Arthur, but no pop up had appeared at all, so it didn't look like this place was associated with any quest. Or maybe they hadn't triggered anything yet? The spawn was also deactivated, so none of these other Noibats, if there were any left, would qualify as catchable.
Arthur glanced at the stairs, thinking, before turning back to Alicia. ❝Did you receive any information about a quest in this house? Notifications have been silent on my end; not sure if there's something up there worth checking out. What say you?❞

Alicia let him mull over the options she presented. No need to rush him into a decision, that would just irritate him again and then she really would deserve whatever retribution he decided to unleash upon her. And, of course, he would ask about the one she wasn’t sure about. Well, he did have a right to know so he could make a fully informed decision. So she had to either say ‘never mind, I’m going to keep it’ or give up information about it. ”It’s a Litleo. Another Kalos mon, Normal and Fire type. Pretty good special attacker.” Alicia admitted, nodding to him. ”As for the others… which ones did you need to hear about?”It would give him a chance to ask her directly, at which point she’d divulge what she knew. Fidough was a Fairy type from Paldea, with an evolution. Yamper also had one evolution, was from Galar, and was indeed an Electric type. Espeon being a psychic type from Johto (though she doubted he would ask about that one), Poochyena being a Dark Type from Hoenn, and Trubbish being a Poison type from Unova. She could see the disinterest in Kyukon’s eyes regarding the Tongue fossil, so she put that away in short order. And apparently Kyukon’s Scyther had been worried there was going to be a spat between the two humans, if that sigh of relief was any indication. Well, at least she wasn’t the only one concerned. Gave more weight to her worries, and more relief that they appeared unfounded. She did jump a bit at the sound of something or other crash to the floor somewhere else in the house. She hadn’t been expecting anything else aside inside. Besides Kyukon at least, as a player could largely go wherever they pleased. ”No, actually.” Alicia replied to Kyukon regarding getting a quest notification. ”I think we still need to trigger something. But unless you’re keen on finding out right now, we should probably earmark this for later. What with things starting to really kick off elsewhere. Would hate to miss the main event because we got distracted by something small that can wait.”There was no telling what they’d have to do to make this happen after all, including of there even was a quest. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Crios (Onix) [4/5/4] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Kyukon
