PARASITE DETECTED: STAGE 2
Now the thing about trauma is that oftentimes, people will turn to familiarity in a bid to convince themselves that nothing has changed.
Hence, why Kazuki returned to the Tutorial Area.
It’s a foolproof idea. This place is designed to be impossible to fuck up, or else Hydance would be eating refunds like potato chips, so he can essentially take a day off from the horror movie his UNOVR life has become and retain one of the few avenues of entertainment he gives a shit about.
He steps onto the idyllic border overlooking a modest patch of tall grass and presses ACCEPT QUEST on his UI. A little jingle sounds and a bouncy little duck pops into existence.
“Welcome to the Catching Tutorial!” The peppy AI chirps, floating like a halo. “Today we will cover an essential part of your pokemon journey: Catching your first pokemon!”
Kazuki crosses his arms impatiently. “I’ve already got a full team.”
“—But it appears you’ve completed the other tutorials! To enhance your IMMERSIVE PLAYER EXPERIENCE, I would recommend waiting for your friends to—”
“Get on with it.”
The command acts as a SKIP BUTTON, QUACXEE lapsing into silence. The AI visibly recalculates something, before nodding cheerily. “Understood! Then, LET US BEGIN.”
A WILD PATRAT pops into existence. Kazuki doesn’t like how the AI had punctuated that note, but he pulls out a regular Pokeball.
Under his feet, the grass has turned into an unsightly brown. The blades wither and die into an arid patch that stretches rapidly outward, a miasma that crawls all the way up the ivy clinging to the side of MOM’s house.
Alarmed by the encroaching death, the WILD PATRAT runs in the opposite direction.
“Fucking rat!” Kazuki hisses. There’s something like Ⱡ₳Ʉ₲Ⱨ₮ɆⱤ that sounds in his head, echoing as if heard from a cavern. He takes a deep breath. The point of this is to relax. He’s not going to lose his shit over a tutorial.
He pulls up his UI again, finds the feature that lets him hook up to his AMZN playlist. With tunes blasting in his ear to drown out whatever is in his head, he takes off on a brisk jog.
Behind him, MOM’s front door slams open. MOM shuffles out of the door, her complexion pale as bone, curly brunette hair falling out, and her immaculate apron rotted to fringes. Along with her comes the familiar face of YOUR RIVAL, followed by the emaciated form of the PACKAGE RECIPIENT—which in this case would be the spoiled brat, YOUNG MASTER HOWARD TODDIGAN, THE FIFTH, THE SEVENTEENTH.
The corrupted NPCs chase after Kazuki, groaning in pain, their heads leaning awkwardly on their shoulders. Clutched in at least one of their hands is a Pokeball.
Oblivious to the chaos behind him, Kazuki continues jogging after the runaway Patrat, head bobbing to the beat in his ears.

Adarsa had found a nice little quiet spot in Briarbane to sit, and look at his pokemon. The dunsparce, who he'd opted to name Dahlia, and the little snom, who would probably be Orchid, just to match. "Aren't you both cute?" He cooed, looking at the little ones- And what a good deal he'd gotten! He felt a twinge of concern for the pumpkaboo- but they had probably gone to a trainer who loved them, right? And who wouldn't love a pumpkaboo?
But- He reached out, petting the dunsparce, who chirred and pressed up into his hand.
"Hi there! Welcome to the Catching Tutorial!" Adarsa jumped, glancing up at the bird- thing- floating by his head. "Be sure to work with your partner to catch the-"
"Partner?" Adarsa asked, now oblivious to what the bird was saying, turning to see who his partner could be. The only person really around seemed to be a man a ways down the road, jogging towards where he was. He.. was pretty. He was really pretty, shirtless and tattooed. Adarsa sighed.
"Catch the- Catch the- Catch the- Catch the- Catch the-"
Adarsa got to his feet, recalling his pokemon and walked away from the bird, towards the beautiful man jogging towards him. "Hey- um," Daringly- maybe a little cheekily- he jogged to intercept, and went to catch the extremely handsome- was he a model? In real life?- man's arm. "Are- Are you my partner?" He asked, smiling a bit and looking up at Kazuki from under his lashes.

A tree rots and crashes down, causing a Mudsdale to stumble, the carriage on its back getting crushed, the unfortunate driver flung off to the side. The driver groans, only to scream and scramble to his feet, running away as the undead NPC horde move forwards as one.
Kazuki presses skip on the floating music player at the corner of his vision, letting his ears be filled with hard bass and a steady beat. He’s keeping pace with the Patrat up ahead. He should be able to wear it down soon.
But his rhythm is interrupted. He feels something grab his arm, causing his head to whip to the side to meet eyes with a stranger whose lips are moving with unheard words. A quick air tap shuts his music off, just in time for him to hear the latter half of the question.
“Your partner?” Kazuki asks, raising a brow. He must admit, this one is ballsy. What kind of suicidal maniac just walks up to a big shirtless guy covered in tattoos?
Green eyes trail down to the fluttering eyelashes and the hand curled over his bicep. Internally, he corrects himself. Horny suicidal maniac.
But he does squint. There is something naggingly familiar about this guy, from his face to his hair and his demure act. It irritates him enough that he doesn’t tell him to fuck off immediately, instead opting to see if he can do some sleuthing. Makes the rat chase more interesting at least.
“That depends. Is this the first time we’ve partnered up?” He says, faux-sweetly. “Could’ve sworn I’ve seen a face like yours somewhere. The cover of a magazine, maybe.”
The Patrat ahead of them squeaks, ducking as debris flies from the chaos wrought by encroaching disaster behind it. It needs a place to hide. Its panicked eyes dart around, before it pivots violently from the route, heading to an alleyway at the edge of town.

Adarsa blinked, and then laughed, blush coloring his cheeks. "Oh- A magazine?" The ant trap has absolutely worked, with Adarsa flinging himself into it eagerly. The cover of a magazine! "Ohhh, no, I don't think so- But I am working to be a novelist, so I'm sure you'll see my face everywhere soon." He said, winking. And it was truth! With how popular his works on Ao3 were, all he had to do was change some names and scramble some places- et voilà, an original work of fiction.
"But what about you?" Adarsa asked in return. This man- Kazuki, how was that even pronounced?- was gorgeous. "I haven't seen you in a de Saint Sernin, have I? Paris, last September?" He looked like someone who would suit a LdSS...
His attention was pulled from the fashion world by rubble and debris kicked back, startling some pokemon nearby. "Huh?" Adarsa peered around Kazuki, a little bit- going still. "What- what is all that?" He asked, which for once was a genuine, salient question.

Novelist is another piece that slots into the puzzle. Kazuki’s brows rise, eyes darting up and down as if thoroughly impressed with this personal trivia. In reality, he’s checking the name that floats over this stranger’s head.
The face. The username. The ease at which he jumps at pretty things, blindly, with no heed for (stranger) danger—
Kazuki laughs. “No, I don’t model.” De Saint Sernin, he recognizes that name from his mother’s extensive knowledge of designers. It brings images of that nouveau pseudo-nude fashion bullshit that Kazuki could not care less about. He’s just a bastard who likes to run around shirtless.
He ignores what’s happening behind them. Tailing the objective leads them to stop before a wall, a tight alley— a dead end.
“Don’t... you know…” A voice groans behind them.
“How to catch…” Awkward silhouettes lumber into the alley, blocking the exit.
“Pokemon…?” Decayed hands tighten around Pokeballs, unable to grip for long. The empty balls fall out of the NPCs’ grips, leaving them only to reach for the players, their eyes milky, their jaws hanging open.
“Maybe,” Kazuki hums, pulling away from starlitlover to grab the gutter on top of the wall with both hands. Muscles tense as he hoists himself with ease, climbing over the wall. And would you look at that, the Patrat has popped out on the other side.
“You know, I can’t tell if I should be offended or flattered.” Kazuki says, looking back to starlitlover, who has been left with the shuffling zombies. “On one hand, you forgot me, but on the other, you’re still into me.”
He drops to a crouch, grinning down at the man, his eyes shining. “I guess you only liked me for my face after all. Right, little prince?”
He extends a hand, leaving starlitlover with the choice of either succumbing to death in the hands of man-eating NPCs or death in the hands of a man-eating ex.

Adarsa's face fell at the epithet, gawking at Kazuki like he'd choked on a hundred-thousand lemons. "I-" The noise squeaked out of him, but nothing followed.
"Weaken.... first..." A voice groaned, and Adarsa jolted- sparing only a single instant's glance back at the whatever the fuck before reaching for Atsushi, letting himself be hauled up, clinging to him desperately.
He tilted his head back to look at him, blinking a bit. "I- You got the face tattoos, I..." Had that been enough to keep him from recognizing someone like Atsushi? "They... they look pretty, Shi."
"Sleeeep... better than.... poiiison..." Adarsa glanced over, seeming to quail a bit at the height. "Um. Why- why are they- uh, zombies?"
That hadn't been on the box art.

Kazuki snorts, still smiling, his eyes narrowing as if he’s looking at something so small and adorable it makes him want to eat it.
Once upon a time, he woke up to those watery eyes. Once upon a time, they were together.
He grabs hold of Adarsa’s hand, calloused fingers wrapping around a palm that had never so much as thrown a punch. He doesn’t remember the details of their first meeting: just that it had felt as easy as pulling Adarsa up right now. Atsushi had been in California for a fight, and Adarsa had been the prettiest thing in the room.
He had no illusions of a lasting relationship.
He helps him up, the two of them now standing on a rooftop as the undead reach for their ankles. Adarsa’s arms hang around his neck. More déjà vu.
Atsushi never admitted to it, but having the man cling to him used to be satisfying. Even when they fought and Adarsa would storm out of his apartment cursing his name, he could always bet he’d return. His apartment used to be littered with his ex’s trinkets: a wealth of intricate little earrings and fine clothing that he would never personally own, a portion being gifts he bought for him. He was tempted to tally how often they would loop through this relationship. It had been a game.
Until it wasn’t.
But then Adarsa looks up at him, stammering out his words. He points out his facial tattoos and calls them pretty, and calls him by a nickname he hasn’t heard in more than a year.
It tears Kazuki’s smile right off, his amusement morphing into disgust. “My avatar has the face tattoos, Ada,” he says quietly. “I told you before, I’m not allowed to have them. My manager calls it career suicide.”
Right, that’s why they could never last. They had nothing in common, and they didn’t respect where they differed. They came back to each other because it was reliable and easy.
Kazuki casts the zombies a disinterested glance. “It’s a feature. The tutorial NPCs are meant to be harmless, but I’ve got a trainer class equipped that fucks up everything that touches me.”
Funny he should say that, while still holding starlitlover steady. He chuckles. “They might kill us, so—hold on!”
He hoists him over his shoulder as an undead hand claws over the gutter, the groaning NPCs beginning to scale the wall as they pile onto each other in a desperate scramble. The sound of the mob scares the Patrat on the other side back into a run, and Kazuki is quick to chase after it, initiating a mad dash across Briarbane’s rooftops.

Adarsa blinked, and frowned. Right. The avatar thing. Hence why Mars was some uppity catgirl (Well, the catgirl part at least- Mars was still Mars) and why he was wearing clothes he never had in life (as upsetting as it was to recognize). He wanted to wave it off, because for them (normal people...) their avatar and person were the same, and also the tattoos also looked really nice. Adarsa had never been sure, the times Atsushi had brought it up, imagining the worst- but it looked like Shi's imagination was much better, and Ada made sure t o admire them as the other man spoke-
"But?" He echoed, uselessly. Fucks up everything that touches me? "H- Hey- Wait-"
It's no use. Shi grabbed him, hauling him gracelessly over his shoulder, Adarsa yelping both at the grave mistreatment, and the zombies starting to clamber onto the wall. His concerns about being killed in the virtual reality game are sucked from his lungs as Atsushi simply runs, dancing atop the rooftops with ease.
And- a̶n̷d̴ ̴t̸h̷a̴t̸ ̴w̶a̴s̷ ̶j̴u̷s̴t̷ ̵l̸i̷k̴e̷ ̷A̵t̷s̵u̷s̴h̸i̴,̷ ̷w̸a̷s̵n̴'̵t̵ ̶i̵t̵?̶ Doing what he wanted, when he wanted, treating people like- like things-
"P- Put me down, Shi!"
"Put me down!" He lashed out, violently now, like he was being kidnapped instead of frogger-hopped towards a patrat.

Kazuki laughs, hair whipping in the breeze as they dart across the landscape, hopping over the wooden roofs of the Wild West-style buildings. He can hear the zombies behind them, but he’s moving so fast, they aren’t even a threat.
Until Adarsa begins to struggle.
“Hey, quit it!” He hisses, feeling fancy shoes kick into his chest and fists pound his back. They feel like nothing—Adarsa can’t hit to save his life, even in a game—but with how wildly the other man struggles, there’s a very real possibility of Kazuki dropping him.
“Ada! Fucking hold still!” He grits his teeth, trying to hold onto the man on his shoulder with both hands, his foot getting far too close to the edge of the platform. There’s a big jump ahead of them, and the mob is drawing close.
Adarsa’s foot slams into his cheek and he curses. There isn’t any time for this shit. He should just drop that deadweight already.
His foot slips. They crash down, landing in the alleyway atop a pile of sandbags. Kazuki groans, shaking his head as he comes to, his body having cushioned Adarsa’s fall. “Are you out of your mind?!” He hisses, grabbing him.
His hand tenses as he’s greeted with panic and fear.
Kazuki swallows and forces himself to get a grip. This isn’t the first time this has happened. At least Adarsa hasn’t bit him. Yet.
There’s the sound of three loud thuds as the undead mob lands from the roof. They lunge for the trainers as Kazuki grabs a panel of wood pinned by the sandbags, using it as a makeshift shield. The wood creaks and cracks as the NPCs tear at it.
“Snap out of it!” He says. They’re pinned against the wall of the alley, cornered. “Ada, you need to send out a Pokémon! Do something!”

Atsushi did, at least, put him down.
Adarsa groaned in pain. He thought he set the settings to not make him be in pain, but something got twisted somewhere because he was in a lot of pain. He sort of pushed himself up, but mostly let himself be pushed as Atsushi got up to do whatever-
And then there were the thuds.
He stirred a bit more at that- gasping and scrabbling back at the sight of things that had one been trainers maybe, leering closer. Atsushi had gotten a shield, from somewhere, and Adarsa just stared dumbly at him for a minute.
Right. The... game.
He dug in his bag, grabbing a handful of the little grape-sized things, yelping as one got bigger in his palm. They all looked the same! How was he supposed to know which one was what??
Ada didn't have time to figure it out! He grabbed the bigger one, and hurled it at one of the zombies, the pokeball bouncing off their skull, opening with a click and flare of red.
And then there was not a thud, but a plap, something long and yellow landing in the dusty streets, eyes closed, largely unmoving. It looked kind of... dead.
"What is that?" Adarsa whispered.

Adarsa thankfully hears him through the corruption, and after a few seconds of painful fumbling, finally lets out a Pokémon.
Oh, they are screwed.
“We’re literally fighting against the undead, and you managed to let out a Pokémon that looks even worse,” Kazuki deadpans. The wooden shield he’s using snaps, and a zombified MOM lunges, sinking her teeth into Kazuki’s arm. He cries out, dropping the razed planks and trying to yank her off him.
“Is this payback for lunch? I cleaned up!” He lights his fist on fire, aiming to land a punch—but it simply disintegrates as it collides with her.
Even the strongest Players are helpless against unkillable NPCs.
“Change of plans!” He collapses on the ground, getting dogpiled by the dead. They rip into him, coating the alley in the red of his blood. “Need to—OW, ow, fuck, fuck, that hurts like a—RAT!”
Skittering across the sandbags, the Patrat pauses at the commotion, its large target eyes gazing at the trainers.
“Throw an empty Pokeball at the rat!” The goddamn Toddlet trips over Adarsa's Dunsparce and collapses on top of him, snapping his jaws two inches away from Kazuki's nose. Kazuki grabs his skull and tries to hold him off, gritting his teeth as the zombie turns his head and begins gnawing his hand. “DO IT!”

There was way too much going on- Atsushi got knocked down by terrible looking NPCs, who were interested in- in eating him? They all seemed fixated on Shi... was it because of what he said? About the weird thing he had? The class thing? Shouldn't he be more concerned about that and not- the weird rat thing?
But, okay, Atsushi always had weird priorities.
Adarsa dug in his bag again, staring at them- oh, okay, that was how he knew which ones were empty. Okay. He could do this. He spared a glance at Atsushi- struggling, covered in blood, and threw the little ball at the rat, who squeaked and tried to flee-
and was sucked back into the ball, which rattled and shook
and shook
and finally gave a little click, and puff of air.

Atsushi is spared from death by the skin of his Mom’s teeth. The undead woman blinks, as if snapping out of a trance, before unhanding his arm, the young Toddigan and Your Rival on either side of her. The trio begin to clap.
“Congraatulations…”
“Knew… you could… do it…”
“Outstanding…”
It’s the most dismal applause he’s ever gotten, but Atsushi exhales and lies flat on the ground as if he ran a marathon. “You’re all nuts.” His comment is ignored as the three NPCs shuffle away, returning to their default positions. As they move farther from Atsushi, their decaying skin appear to mend and sew themselves, until they disappear from view as average people.
There’s an annoying pinging sound coming from the corner of his UI. His health bar begging for a trip to the shrine. He groans as he pulls himself up. He’s not going anywhere, not yet at least.
“I think we need to talk about this,” he says, baseball bat-blunt as he regards Ada. He gestures between them with a hand that has a chunk bitten out of it. “This, I mean, not the zombies.”
He snickers. “Unless you want to just pretend we never saw each other. Leave everything to last time.” On the phone, at the airport, boarding a flight to Brazil.

Adarsa blinked at the sudden shift in genre, watching the npcs toddle off- attention only caught again when Atsushi sat up.
And he bristled. “Wh- What is there to talk about?” He snapped. “You-” The rest vanished in a huff of breath. Because- the distorted memories were fading, now, no longer being held by Shi.
Just the truth. Not a perfect relationship by any stretch- but nothing terrible or tragic. Just a relationship. Just a breakup.
“You didn’t even call. You- you sent a text. You kept my stuff.” He’d raced back to the apartment, at that- only to see the door wide open, cleaners inside. Tidying up the carpet, the walls.
Prepping for a next renter.

And of course, once the initial danger had passed, Adarsa is quick to bounce back, snapping as if Atsushi’s extending an infinite well of patience.
It would be very easy to turn back, but there was always something charming about his bratty little tantrums.
“I bought you that stuff,” Atsushi raises a brow. “You really want them that badly, Ada? I can send them all to you, if you want.”
And it’s bitter, of course—recalling the gifts, the colorful feather dangling off an earring, a necklace of sapphires designed for an elegant throat—all carefully chosen by an absolute shmuck. But it’s liberating to admit that now he can pack them up and send them far, far away, and feel nothing about it.
“I just figured you didn’t want to keep them,” he shrugged. “They always ended up back at my place.” Just like you.
“See, Ada, when people want to keep something, they usually keep it close, somewhere safe. Not just, y’know, coming back to borrow it whenever it’s convenient.”
