#s://i~imgur~com/RUryKME~jpg After saying goodbye to your ridonkulously fake mother and that demure girl (or rather, your false sister), Emery headed towards the next closest quest marker. It was slightly out of order, but that was fine. Dad always said that as long as you planned the beginning and the end, you could do loop-de-loops in the middle for all that mattered. Emery wondered whether this would turn out to be a co-op quest as well - she sure hoped so. There was something viciously vindicating about having a makeshift "friend" who would be unable to leave until some mission was completed. Unable to distance themselves from her, at least for the time being. Idol saw the boy before Emery did, slapping a flipper on her shoulderblade to get her attention. "The quest marker's floating right on top of his head, Viv. I think that might be our guy!"Good lord. Emery couldn't look away. The young man - roughly her digital age, she wouldn't be surprised if he was her age - was wearing a crisp, white dress shirt buttoned all the way up to the collar, like some kind of goody priest boy. Over that was a jacket that seemed like it was made out of dark brown PU leather, zipped up till under his third button or so. Black jeans that flattered his long legs. He had a very angular face with pronounced cheekbones and a strong chin, framed by wavy, tousled brown hair that curled roguishly around his ears. She wanted to sock him between the eyes so badly. Even more when he noticed her and looked up from fiddling with his ukulele: he had drooping doe eyes and a mouth on the borderline of a pout. Emery didn't know she was capable of feeling such irritation at a mere face, but somehow this felt incredibly right. It was like a niggling annoyance that bore no reason or logic behind it, nothing overly serious or heavy, but still managed to light a fire throughout her whole body. "Oh, you're finally here," said the infuriating young man in a Yorkshire twang. "I was thinking maybe you'd never show up!""And you are?" Said Emery icily, watching him like a hawk. Idol's tail was swishing back and forth, responsive to Emery's agitation. "Oh, you wound me," the man touched a hand to his chest dramatically, grinning. "Don't tell me you've forgotten your opposite-street neighbour already, Em! We used to play sticks and stones together!""Sorry, I don't have much mental RAM for fops.""Oh, alright then" - if he starts another sentence with 'oh', I'm going to get myself permabanned - "it's Timothy Charlamagne. Remember now? You made fun of my name so much back then.""Can't imagine why," muttered Emery. "Tim Charles. Did the name randomiser treat you that poorly?"Above Timothy Charlamagne's head, the nametag that proclaimed <Your RIVAL> smoothly changed to say Timothy Charlamagne. There was even a little flourish at the end, sending some miniscule sparks into etherspace. Disgusting. "Don't know what you're talking about!" declared Tim Charles cheerfully. He put his ukulele away behind his back - not that he had a backpack or rucksack or anything like that. "Forget it. You won't need to remember anyway. I have to beat your arse, right? Seems easy enough, especially since it doesn't look like you have much of one."Timothy Charlamagne chuckled and unhooked out not one, but two Pokéballs from the back of his belt. He smiled at Emery, looking like some dog about to confidently cry in the rain, and held both balls out in one bony fist. "Took the words right out of my mouth, Em. That's right: if you're going anywhere out of this town, you'll have to go through me first. That's what our blood pact was back in the day, and I'm not one to break my promises or blood pacts!""I'll whip him in the face sneakily if you want, make it look like an accident," whispered Idol into Emery's ear, the smell of the sea washing over her. Emery considered and thought that it wouldn't be anywhere near as satisfying seeing pixels slap other pixels. "It's ok, I'll do it myself," replied Emery lowly, before barreling forwards directly at Timothy Charlemagne, fist out and ready to smash that perfect nose in.

#s://i~imgur~com/LZYraiD~jpg If this isn't the best example of going off the beaten path, Jian wasn't sure what is. As with most open world video games, he has the tendency to check every nook and cranny of every back alley and trashcan. Coming across a quest on accident was just par for the course.
Though, it's really only been small town and plains at the moment, but Jian has really put his tutorial quests on the backburner. And hey, Yanyan hasn't exactly complained about anything yet. He seemed pretty content with catching a couple of catnaps here and there, and when he's not, he's grooming.
Though if the man had to admit, putting off doing actual things can get pretty boring after a while. Plus he can't even get around anywhere fast without a bicycle, much less running shoes!
"Tired of feeling bored yet?" Yanyan's voice piped up from below, as if reading his mind.
"I mean, when you put it like that, I could probably use a nap right now." Jian snickered.
"Well I am! I'm bored! Go do something, naow!" The litten bounded onto his shoulder and bapped him on the head again lightly.
"Alright, alright! Man, do I have to start wearing a helmet around you or something?" Jian rubbed the side of his head where Yanyan's paw hit him. His voice lowering down slightly when it sounds like there's a commotion going on. And in true busybody fashion, Jian slowed down as well.
"Hey, eavesdropping is rude!" Yanyan hissed only to earn a hand to the face.
"Yeah, yeah, I know, but I think a fight's about to happen, and I mean, I haven't seen a pokemon battle yet, I'm sure it's fine to just spectate right?"Jian reasoned. Though the longer he lingered, the less it seemed like pokemon battle's about to start but a full on fist fight instead?
And he wasn't sure if hurting an NPC was even possible but nothing the guy said as far as Jian could hear sounded like it warranted a punch to the face.
Jian didn't even own a pair of running shoes at the moment, but he was close enough to react. He ducked in just in time to stop the girl's hand from making contact with the extremely British-looking boy's nose. Jian wondered if there were actually QTEs in this game because that felt like a QTE moment.
"W-woah! Sorry to cut in there, but uh, I don't believe Pokemon battles usually include close-quarter combat!"
And as he said that, his UI flashed before his eyes stating :

#s://i~imgur~com/RUryKME~jpg Plack!was the sound of Emery's fist smacking against someone's palm, the fingers of which swiftly closed over hers. She startled: a tall, broad-looking man with long hair, not an NPC, now stood in front of her, having appeared out of literally nowhere, and stopped Timothy Charlamagne's nose from compacting. Emery immediately stepped back, shaking her hand out. She'd never actually been in a proper fistfight before. "It's not a Pokémon battle yet, so those rules don't apply," replied Emery, peeved. She looked the stranger up and down, ignoring his nametag, and cocked an eyebrow. There was a black-and-red cat on his shoulder, staring at her with deep yellow eyes. "You do know he's not real, right? Data doesn't get hurt."Behind the new man, Timothy Charlamagne laughed breezily and piped up: "There she goes again! Just like old times, trying to manhandle me some way or another. Thanks for stepping in, friend, but I'm no stranger to Em's ol' one-two!""And you, stop talking like you know me!" "Say, haven't I seen you somewhere before?" Tim Charles ignored Emery and sidled out from behind the man. He also looked him up and down, and Emery could've sworn there was some kind of appreciation in those dim green eyes. Idol swam through the air and settled in front of Emery, a small bubble blowing out of his nose. His gaze was deadset on that small cat, his small, seal-y body tense. Emery laid a featherlight hand on his back, not encouraging, but not halting either. She noticed the quest pop-up, finally turning a pleasing green signaling GO and the impending double battle - she'd have to fight with this interloper it seems. Maybe I can have a 1v1 with him afterwards. The thought eased her irritation and she let herself relax somewhat. She smiled and pat Idol's back to say that everything was fine. "What's your name, stranger? God says we'll have to work together very soon."Meanwhile, Timothy Charlamagne's attention was drawn by something in the distance. He began waving and shouting, a huge grin on his stupid face. "Hey! Hey! Baohao-boy! Finished with practice already?"

#s://i~imgur~com/34V77tX~jpg "Really? It seems like he challenged you to a pokemon battle, so I'm pretty sure the rules apply." Jian retorted lightheartedly, his hand still wrapped around her fist like this was now some extended game of rock, paper, scissors in which he won.
"Anyway, even if he's not real, it's not nice to go decking random people in the face like that. I hope this isn't how you greet most people." He quirked an eyebrow before releasing the girl's hand. He hoped she doesn't take the chance to try and punch the guy again. Speaking of which, for a rival, the guy's pretty carefree about the fact that he very nearly got punched in the face. 'Childhood friend' or not. Also what's his name there? Timothy Charlamagne? How do you even pronounce that?
"Uh, I don't believe so. Maybe? My 'house' is around here somewhere." And by house, he absolutely meant the one home everyone starts from where their Mom supposedly resides in. Damn, wouldn't that make a whole bunch of them 'related' in game then?
Yanyan, upon noticing the UI appear before disappearing in a flash of code, gave a tiny huff which might've hinted to him thinking 'Finally!' He turned his gaze away from the Popplio, though very aware of his eyes on him, before lightly hopping off Jian's shoulder.
Jian turned back to look at the girl asking for his name, laughing at how she labeled the UI/overall game objective as 'God'. "Name's Jian, and my Litten's name is Yanyan. And yeah, it seems so. Maybe this could be a better first impression, huh, Miss?" He turned to look at the girl's rival who was waving to someone at a distance.
And almost immediately, what stood out to Jian the most was the explosive looking hairstyle the guy had. His neutral expression quickly turned into quite a grimace when he heard his name being called. Most likely because of how Tim Charles absolutely butchered the pronunciation and not to mention the tone.
But just as he was about to yell back a response, the 'Baohao-boy' locked eyes with Jian. And this may all be fake but he has never experienced a more intense glare than the one he's getting right there and then.
"Damn, look who finally decide to show their face!!" The man (Jian assumes he's about the same age as him, would be weird to have a rival younger than him), stomped his way over, shoving Tim Charles aside as he did so. He was wearing a black wife-beater singlet that was very reminiscent of what some of the uncles at the wet market would wear back home, a pair of cargo pants and...what was that? Loafers?
Still, the guy was starting to get all up in Jian's face and, man who coded him? Why was he being so aggressive? If this were real life, Jian would've probably also decked this guy. Sure yeah, maybe he was a hypocrite, sue him. But this was a game, which made this situation, just a little bit hilarious.
Clearly him trying to hold back a laugh was obviously caught on by the A.I. Baohao narrowed his eyes, before looking down at Yanyan by Jian's feet who instantly hissed at him. "Wow, look at that, guy goes and gets himself a pokemon and doesn't even have the common decency to hit up his RIVAL," He shoots another fiery glare at the man, "For a f****** battle?! And you think you know a guy." Baohao rolled his red eyes sarcastically. Jian was at a loss of words this entire time, it almost felt like witnessing a cutscene, which he suppose it kind of was.
"TIM, GET YOUR FLAT A** IN HERE. WE'RE BATTLING RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW." And with that declaration, the blonde NPC pulled out a pokeball from one of his pockets.

"Oh, that's right! You're Baohao-boy's friend! He told me all about how you guys moved here from the big city and then you practically abandoned him after you went for an internship...or something like that!" chirped Timothy Charlamagne, throwing an indolent finger gun to Jian as this new fellow (it was turning out to be a real convergence of fellows) stormed up to them. He went for a peppy wave with a bony-knuckled hand and was cleanly ignored. Emery wondered whether this Jian character was like this in real life. Some kind of law enforcer, maybe, or perhaps someone who'd been bullied a lot in school and now grew enough physical and mental balls to stand up for others the way he couldn't stand up for himself as a child. She gave him a proper sizing-up, sparing the black cat a similar glance. Both of their bodies seemed to radiate a slight warmth - Fire types, then? She couldn't remember any of the proper Pokémon names nor the full list of advantages and disadvantages, but she'd gamble on the cat being Fire. And any child would know that Water beat Fire. With a nod from Emery, Idol swam down to join Yanyan, doing a graceful, slightly showy flip before touching his flippers to solid earth for the first time in some hours. Emery took two generous steps back, keeping her distance the way she'd seen characters in previous games do (though she thought it was plenty silly). "You don't have to tell me twice, Baohao-boy! I was just about to tango with Em here." Timothy Charlamagne's two balls reappeared in his palm, looking weighty. He flashed a kindly smile at Emery, considered something, and tossed one up in the air with a joyful exclamation: "But you two of all people should know my ass isn't flat!"The ball popped open and vomited out its beam of light, similar to how Idol first emerged from his, and a tutorial screen at 80% opacity simultaneously faded in onto Emery's FOV. She flipped through it quickly and when she closed the pop-up, her anticipation waned slightly upon seeing Timothy's offering. "A zebra?" She clucked her tongue, having expected something flashier. The zebra was less conspicuous, but Emery noticed the mane's design. Lightning? Or what did they call it, Electric? The colour scheme didn't quite fit, though. "Idol, send it back to whatever fake savannah it came from."Knowing that there was an audience (Jian) made Emery straighten her back. Even without, she would've given it 100%, but when there was a crowd, be it of only 1, she unconsciously pushed the gauge up to 140%. A hand went on her hip and she tossed her head, winking at Jian. It was a stance that proclaimed watch me. Smiling sweetly, she muttered a breezy aside. "If you try to butt-in again, I'll strangle you." Save the niceties for later; this was the reason why she'd started the game "We'll see about that! Dune!" Tim Charles wagged his finger at her then flung it out at Idol. The zebra neighed and spread its front hooves with a fierce, horsey grin. "Shock Wave that bubble-nosed boy!"
250 HP DUNE ATTACKS IDOL: SHOCK WAVE |HWnWShY1d50 +20 The zebra brayed, a shrill sound, electricity building then releasing in a flash from the tip of its spiked mane. The jolt slammed into Idol, who cried out, bubbles popping every which way around him. Electricity! Emery clicked her tongue again, but noticed the zebra staggered ever-so-slightly. Self-damaging? But Idol isn't going to be able to hold on for very long against something like that. "Idol!""'M fine!" Idol spat out a bit of water, tremours running through his small body every other second. "I can take it! Tell me what to do!"
"Good, then" - a menu of moves crept up at the bottom right of Emery's vision - "Icy Wind! And make it hurt!"114HP IDOL ATTACKS DUNE: ICY WIND 2d20+10 Idol, fast as the lightning he was just attacked with, jumped up into the air and did a long, loping flip, rapidly using his flippers in tandem with forceful bubbles from his nose to generate a jetstream of freezing air. This was directed at Dune the zebra, who recoiled, hooves pattering, and a frosty crust even grew on its snout as it shook. Idol repeated this twice in quick succession, each gust getting colder and colder. Emery could feel the chill from where she stood, curling around her calves and creeping up her arms, and she vaguely envied Timothy Charlamagne for his jacket. Now both animals were trembling from time to time; Idol landed back on the ground heavily and spat out another globule of water, icy this time. Emery cursed at the HP values. Tim Charles met her eyes, surely having seen the same, and he grinned; there was nothing cutesy or saccharine about his expression now. He mouthed the word risky, risky at her and she glared back. There was a whole 100 point difference between the two of them, and the damned zebra was up next. 1d50·2d20+20

"It's f***ing college, you idiot. And how many times do I have to tell you to not put 'boy' at the end of my name and friend in the SAME GODDAMN SENTENCE?!" The guy named Baohao, simultaneously tossed his pokeball up into the air while expressing his indignation at Tim Charles.
By now, Jian was straight up shaking with laughter, his arms grasping at his stomach as he took a couple steps back as well. He lifted a hand pointing for Yanyan to go on ahead, "Wooo, ahh man, this is great. Alright, alright. Sorry, sorry I know, I'll take this seriously." He flashed a less-than-apologetic grin at Yanyan who was looking back at him with annoyance before finally focusing on the pokemon before Baohao and Tim Charles.
"Chimchar, huh, kinda fitting now that I think about it." Jian mused to himself before raising his hands at the girl as a sign that he wouldn't 'butt-in' this time. He was a lot more interested in seeing how a double-battle in such a free-roaming type game would play out anyway. He could also really admire the girl's need to pose, as one would do in a show or anime, as the fight begins in earnest.
A very clear display of every pokemons' HP is now on display, at least for both Jian and his 'partner' and he couldn't help making a face when he realized it was a very clear, Electric vs Water. It was a little hard, to say the least, watching an actual talking 'animal' get zapped like that.
"HEY, YOU GONNA F***IN FOCUS OR WHAT? MAYBE WE OUGHTA LIGHT A FIRE UNDER YOUR ASS, HUH, HELIOS? TORCH HIM WITH EMBER."
150 HP HELIOS ATTACKS YANYAN: EMBER 77MqMLJR2d20+20
The flame that burned on the rear end of the little monkey seemed to burn even brighter for a moment as it took a deep breath before seemingly firing out balls of flame from its' mouth, hot air billowed around them as flames engulfed Yanyan for a moment, he yowled in shock.
"Yanyan!"
The flame dissipates but the Litten was thankfully still in one piece, albeit a little charred and smokey. Jian's eyes flickered towards the health and was surprised to see that the chimchar has taken damage as well. Why is it taking damage from it's own attacks? As he thought that, he notice the chimchar coughing a little.
"You still good?" The man looked down at the litten.
"Yeah," Yanyan shook his body as an animal would do. "I can do them one better." He lashed his tail as if waiting for the Jian's signal.
Jian considered his options, usually for a starting battle like this, he'd just go ahead and keep attacking his direct opponent until they fall. There's no way they would allow your character to lose in a tutorial right? But that popplio, Idol, seems to be looking in dire straits right about now.
"Yanyan, Ember on Dune!" Jian said, focusing his sights on the blitzel.
Yanyan shot Jian a look of confusion and annoyance that he couldn't get his immediate revenge but complied anyway with a shake of his head. The air around them grows hot again as the litten's fur stood on end. Light began to emanate from the cat's mouth before a burst of multiple fireballs were spat out towards blitzel.
245HP YANYAN ATTACKS DUNE: EMBER 1d50+10
"Sorry, don't mean to "butt-in", just trying to even out the battlefield, huh?" Jian grinned apologetically at his 'partner'. "Also, it would be quite embarrassing to white-out in a tutorial battle, wouldn't you say, 小姐?"
Jian was in no way trying to egg the girl on but who knows how she might take it. Though if Emery decides she wanted to take the chance to take out Baohao's chimchar and 'killsteal(?)', so to speak? Who is he to stop her.

"Oi, that thing's Fire!" Emery blurted. The next sentence nearly slipped from her mouth - we should swap! - but she caught herself in time, the words squeezed out of existence by her pride. She'd never participated in team sports and the concept of relinquishing the one that was her 'responsibility' was appalling. But Idol's health and the way the battle surely was going to end up going made her think thrice. She watched the Fire monkey fling some flames at the Fire cat, thinking about how suboptimal it all was when she had a perfect counter right in front of her and how much health the cat had over that very counter. Double Idol's HP? Ah, there: near the health in small letters, the cat (Yanyan) was labelled as a Tank. Emery recalled assigning Idol as a so-called 'Sweeper', but that had been before she'd entered proper combat. This was...quite different than it seemed on paper. And then the cat (Yanyan) hurled fire at the zebra (Dune) in front of Idol instead. As the damage number popped up and HP deducted, Emery whirled around to face this Jian character, indignant, but he got his piece in before she could say anything. "Nice hit! Thanks for that, new furred friend! You're not too bad for a little Litten, hehe! Oh, look, even if you try to portmanteau those two words, they'd still be the same: litten and Little! Isnt't that cool?" Idol yipped and spun in the air over to Yanyan (the cat), slapping his back with a wet flipper. This was immediately followed by another brief, full-body tremour. "小姐? What, d'you think this'll make you my 大哥?" Meanwhile, Emery had barked a laugh. That had been undeniably Cantonese; a fellow countryman, perhaps? Or thereabouts. Not that Emery herself was either of her fathers' nationalities, but she'd been raised on it enough. Fine then! All things considered, this was the best course of action. "Sure, why not? This'll be just like home. Then, let's trade opponents, 大哥, and I can let you have the bathroom first tonight!"Unconsciously mirroring her Pokémon, Emery heartily slapped Jian on the back, cackling. Why, she felt closer to this guy already! "Idol, change of plans! Blast the monkey back to the circus - Water Jet!"94 HP IDOL ATTACKS HELIOS: WATER JET ohlfPoLo2d20+60 Idol slapped his tail on the ground and gripped his nose with both flippers. A breath later, a thick, straight, compressed torrent of water shot out and pummeled the monkey right in the chest, slamming it off its feet and making its tail fire waver dangerously. Emery wondered whether there was some mechanism in Idol's nose that could switch between cold air and high-density water. "Now that's more like it!" Idol crowed, snorting a bit of water out of his invisible nostrils. A bubble popped out. "If you're going down, you're taking that monkey along with you," muttered Emery firmly. That blasted self-damage on every attack...her eyes flickered to the Electric zebra, a motion that did not go unnoticed by a certain someone. "Leaving me out already, Em? Look, even your new buddy knows that I'm here; what a good friend, fighting your battles for you, eh, Baohao-boy?" Tim Charles, who still existed, closed the two step gap between him and Baohao and slung an arm over the latter's shoulders. He murmured a dramatic aside ( "You never told me he was such a gentleman!") to the blond and then refocused on Emery. "Then let me remind you that I used to win whenever we played rock-paper-scissors! Dune, Shock Wave!"He again pointed his finger at Idol, and the zebra acquiesced, stomping the ground and smashing a bolt of lighting down on Idol. 158 HP DUNE ATTACKS IDOL: SHOCK WAVE 1d50+25 Idol writhed this time, flattening against the ground. Wisps of steam curled off his body and he coughed a plentitude of bubbles. Emery's jaw was tight; she'd expected this, but not to this extent. "大哥," said Emery slowly, gripping Jian's arm with one crushing (or as close to crushing as she could get) hand. The prospect of losing abysmally was never, ever a good feeling and, in the moment, she mentally leant into her little fiction. "If you still value the times I gave you my last 蝦餃..."2d20·1d50+25

#s://i~imgur~com/LZYraiD~jpg Yanyan barely cast a side glance at Idol but couldn't help jumping at the seal's sudden full body tremor from being electrocuted before. His fur now standing on end. He is definitely not going to last very long at this rate.
Jian's eyes widened, he didn't expect Emery to actually understand what he said, much less play into the whole dynamic. Also the pronunciations were almost perfect in tone. Maybe she might actually be someone close to home? Or probably somewhere around there.
""Well, I'm something of a big brother to most people I suppose." The man laughed heartily before focusing solely on Dune. Though he couldn't help watching in awe as popplio lets out a high pressured blast of water towards the chimchar.
"The f*** you mean sending him back to the circus! Your seal's a wholea** clown- Get the f*** off me, Tim!" Baohao exclaimed with the usual amount of anger as he shoves the younger man aside, though with very little success. As willowy as Tim Charles appeared to be, he seemed to have a pretty good grasp around Baohao's shoulder.
The following attack that descended on Idol was nothing less than brutal, hitting even harder than the last time.
Jian sucked in a breath before noticing the tight grasp on his arm. He cast a glance down at Emery before straightening slightly.
"What're you talking about, you're the one who always takes the last piece off of my plate!" Nothing like playing into their little situation here.
"Yanyan, one more time, Ember!"
Yanyan gritted his fangs before once again, his body convulsing ever so slightly as he called forth another wave of flaming fur balls from his mouth aimed straight at the Blitzel.
245HP YANYAN ATTACKS DUNE: EMBER I40Axu8e1d50+10
"Ugh, still not enough." Jian muttered in frustration. They're going to have to accept the fact that Idol was absolutely not going to make it through this fight. The man wished he could do more, he was aware of the special ability he could've apply to Yanyan which allowed him to physically body block attacks from opponents. Unfortunately, he did not have that kind of currency just yet. Guess they'll just have to tough it out for as long as they can.
"You two done yappin?! You're lucky you're water type, clown-boy. HELIOS, I KNOW IT'S GETTING TOUGH, YOU DID WHAT YOU COULD, EMBER ON THAT F***ING CAT."
Sure enough, the Chimchar seemed to be on its last legs, musters whatever remaining bit of its strength to hurl a torrent of fireballs right at Yanyan.
45HP HELIOS ATTACKS YANYAN: EMBER 2d20+20
A couple of them fizzled out before they could even reach the Litten, what was left simply singed a bit of Yanyan's fur. Baohao on the other side, gripped Tim Charles' shoulder so hard it's very likely to leave a mark.
"Alright, it's all on you now, Idol, do your best!" Jian said encouragingly, even if he'll most likely be down for the count by his next turn. Though with how things are going, Yanyan might not last for long either. With Idol out, he would still have 3 pokemon to deal with. This was starting out to be quite a brutal tutorial.

Idol wasn't in a good state. This much was clear to everyone, most of all Idol himself - or at least that's what Emery assumed. Most likely it was the program realising that it was 'low' and 'hurt', so it reflected the physiological damage accordingly. That's why Idol was still having those mini-seizures, his skin goosefleshing up all dry and crackling, why his formerly crystal-clear eyes were now bloodshot and swollen with pain, why he was panting and spitting like never before. It was all just a program. The animal itself wasn't hurting because it wasn't real. It wasn't cruelty, wasn't anything that deserved any more sympathy than if your Tamagotchi died. A bunch of pixels shaping themselves according to their code. This was how Emery stopped herself from becoming too attached. She thought Idol was the best discovery from the game so far, that much was true, but under no circumstances was she going to lose herself in the clear emotional trap this all was. She eased her clenched jaw and relaxed the tightness in her posture. But Idol had to turn and glance at her over his tiny, shivering shoulder, a question in his drooping eyes that was asked out of instinct. It was like he sensed her thoughts to a vague extent. "Do your best, Idol," said Emery, repeating after Jian. It came out rote. "Like the man said, do your best. I believe in you." It seemed to be enough for the seal, who squinted and nodded. "I'm just gonna think that this is all training" - a wet cough - "for when I stand on a real stage, since it's definitely going to be much tougher than these bozos!" He coughed again and Vivi took the headset off for a brief second. +++ She went to the window overlooking a grey street, streaks of dirty rain staining cobbles that haven't been changed since the Victorian era, or something silly along those lines. The clock informed her that it was almost time to Deliveroo herself some dinner, as it was getting far too late to start cooking on an empty stomach (and yet it was fine to wait on an empty stomach). There were no mutant seals, monkeys, zebras, or cats milling around on her floor, fighting each other to the death. No young men standing next to or opposite her. She had a class to go to tomorrow at 10AM, and was due for a call with Dad to discuss arrangements for summer. +++
"Sorry about that." Emery was breezy when she returned. She looked to the side as if making sure Jian was still there and continued: "Thanks for the cover, 哥, I'll make sure you get the good stuff at dinner tonight.""Idol, are you still with me?""To where the ocean ends!""As you do," hummed the girl. "Let's killsteal my big bro over here. Hey, Blondie! You swear like you know you've a small cock and your breath smells like the rim of a toilet seat - Idol, one last Aqua Jet! But only enough to end it!"She'd seen the values of a 'Basic Attack'. That was more than right to put the monkey out of business. "Yeah!" 34HP
IDOL ATTACKS HELIOS: AQUA JET20DMG + 30 = 50DMGA similar jetstream came out of Idol's nose, but the force was pretty much halved compared to the double attacks he'd done before on her command. Idol still recoiled from the water pressure - Jian's rival's monkey still keeled over. "Your first kill, Idol! Well, first knock-out I suppose, but all the same! Well done!"Emery bent down and laid a ginger hand on the seal's head, not patting in case it might agitate his already agitated skin. Idol yipped, nuzzling into her palm, breath still coming roughly out of his small lungs. Oh, Emery was aware that the Baowhatever still had another Pokemon to his name, and so did the Timothée Chalamet imposter, but that was no longer her problem. Idol could probably hold out one more attack and - "Nice, Em! I applaud you and your Popplio for that, and even your new, handsome friend for his aid, but this is where...it ends!"- she supposed it would be coming right about now, from the latter who was deadset on claiming some kind of association with her. Timothy Charlamagne gave her a pitying smile, complete with a patronising tilt of his tousled head. He stepped away from Baowhatever, patting his back comfortingly, and then drew himself up to his full, lanky height, declaring: "I'll avenge you, Baohao-boy, even if you don't want me to. This is just the way of life, my life!" He clapped once and Emery was surprised his knuckles didn't rattle. "Dune, trample the opposition - Shock! Wave!"118 HP DUNE ATTACKS IDOL: SHOCK WAVE BREm9huZ1d50 +20
The zebra didn't even slam into the ground this time like before, merely gave a swift, decisive tap. Lightning, far less intense than earlier, zigzagged out of his mane, almost leisurely, and converged upon Idol like the seal was a lightning rod. Idol cried out, this comparatively weak attack pushing him to his final destination, and he slumped down, prone and smoking. Emery didn't say anything. It was a known outcome, after all. She crouched down, opened her single Pokéball, and recalled Idol back. He'd just been 'born' some hours ago, hadn't he? And now he was dead, or knocked out, from a continuous barrage of electricity. Expensive boots appeared in her vision. "Admit it, Em. You finally, finally lost to me."A hand also crept in, open and friendly. "It was a good fight! But unfortunately, like I said, I've always won at rock-paper-scissors."She considered, then got up without Tim Charles' help. She looked him right in the eye, so fake and generated as it was, brimming with victory and sympathy and a strange kind of smugness, and threw another punch, willing that Jian would be too absorbed in his own battle to stop her. 2d20+60

#s://i~imgur~com/LZYraiD~jpg #s://i~imgur~com/LZYraiD~jpg Jian winced, it's never great to lose in a pokemon battle, this just feels even worse because now the pokemon has sentience and the rivals actually talk back at you and worse, gloat. Tim Charles didn't seem to be the kind to do so excessively and sure enough, he still came across as pretty light hearted about it, but it's still not great having someone talk at you after getting a proper beating.
As Emery swung her fist out at his face, Jian quickly stepped over to grasp at her wrist, successfully stopping her a second time from punching the younger man's face in.
"Do it after he heals your pokemon," Jian cast an understanding glance at Emery. "After that, I won't stop you. Promise." He raised his arm like he's swearing in before slowly releasing his hand from her. He really didn't mean to cockblock her so many times from doing so. In fact, if Tim Charles makes another vaguely flirtatious quip towards him, Jian hopes Emery socks him extra hard on behalf of him.
For now, the man would get back to his own battle. Baohao has gone surprisingly quieter after his chimchar got K.O-ed. Jian barely managed to catch the last few moments where the guy recalled it back into his pokeball.
"It's not over yet." He said quietly before tossing out a similar looking Blitzel out.
"Show'em who's boss, Raiden!"
"Alright, Yanyan, I guess we gotta just hustle double time for now." Jian forced a himself to sound determined. Any other time in a battle like this in real life, he'd be complaining so loud his parents would be telling him to keep it down. "Ember on Dune, while this guy here's distracted.
Yanyan gave a slight huff. Jian knows he sound probably focus in on Baohao's Blitzel by now but it didn't make sense to not just completely take down Dune while it's already low on health.

The attack this time didn't quite hit as hard, the strain from having to use ember consistently was clearly putting a strain on the Litten's throat.
"Still focusing on the wrong guy, huh? Raiden, use Shock Wave!"

Flashes of electricity flashed across the Blitzel's mane before firing towards Yanyan. Though it did little gave him a slight jolt and fur that now stood on end. The singed parts of his fur were also now sparking slightly.
"HRGHG, THAT'S JUST A WARM UP." The man standing opposite him shouted lamely. Though Jian was grateful for the slow start. If he lasts for 2 more turns, he can at least take Dune out.
"Hey, after this, let's go grab some ice-cream from the 7-11 or something. It'll be 大哥's treat." Jian then quickly said to Emery. Realistically, he can't. But who knows, maybe he'll be able to treat her to something in-game at least. He could really go for something to munch on right about now as well.

“Well, aren’t you a wonderful gentleman!” Timothy Charlamagne was taking no prisoners today. He peeked out, grinning, from behind Jian, who had miraculously managed to intercept Emery yet again (was he fast? Or was she just embarrassingly slow?). “You could stand to learn a thing or two from him, Em; for starters, I would say trying to physically harm someone you just lost to is the poorest sportsmanship! Tells of bad upbringing, you know.”
Emery withdrew her hands, clutching them close to her chest, and scowled at them both. She couldn’t tell whether her fake rival had heard what Jian said—even if he had, she was sure he didn’t mind the still-lingering threat. These things had no self-preservation, anyway. It wouldn’t make sense for them to.
“Yeah, yeah.” She mumbled to Jian, her expression relaxing into something more neutral. “I’ll do it when you’re not around, Mr Meddler, since you seem to love playing the hero so much.”
“Ignoring me some more, Em?”
“Stuff it.”
Emery stepped off to the side, giving Jian and the blond space. Timothy Charlamagne trailed after her. She was over it; the heat of the moment had fizzled into nothing. If this expy of an actor expected her to cosy up to him after he’d served his purpose, he had another thing coming.
“Well?” He held out a hand expectantly.
She sighed and jerked her chin at his zebra, who was looking at them, a bit confused. “Don’t you have a battle to be continuing?”
“I only ever wanted to fight you, Em. Let Baohao-boy handle his own business. C’mon, don’t be so sore. You heard the man: let me heal your Idol.”
“I don’t need your pity.” Emery paused. “Or your programming.”
“Not pity, just manners. It wasn’t like we were fighting for our lives!” He had the gall to barge into her field of view with what probably passed for a genteel smile. “Alright?”
Emery rolled her eyes. She retrieved Idol’s ball and dropped it in a pale, bony-knuckled palm. “You pixels can take care of each other, then.”
Meanwhile, the zebra had taken another hit in the background. No sign from Tim Charles that he'd noticed, which was honestly very irresponsible of him.
“I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about,” replied Tim Charles cheerily. “But let’s do a little bit of this…and a little bit of that…there! He should be all better now, the cutie.”
Those had been some very esoteric and nonsensical movements, but Emery didn’t question any of it or how he was able to heal Idol without even opening the ball. When she took it back, the ball radiated good health and even felt a bit heavier than before.
“…Thanks.” Begrudgingly. Just manners. “Now piss off. I’m going to watch my brother.”
The title came out unintentionally, almost flippantly. She meant nothing by it and sat down on a convenient bench; they’d been fighting in the middle of the street. Emery thought Timothy Charlamagne would finally take the hint when he trotted back to re-ball his zebra, but no, he promptly came back and plonked down next to her, only now fussing over the state of his animal.
She sighed when he started kicking his feet after a while.
At the blond Baowhatever’s roar of frustration, Timothy Charlamagne called: “You can do it, Baohao-boy! You too, Jian! Everyone do your best!”
“Aren’t battles so fun? You see people trying their utmost with their Pokemon; really brings out the best in a person.”
“You’re only saying that because you won.” Emery’s mouth slipped, breaking her silent vow of not making unnecessary conversation with someone who wasn’t real.
“Ah, but you didn’t say that I was wrong, which means you agree, no?”
Emery didn’t reply.
When Jian quickly tossed the invitation to her, she seized up for a split second. Not even her actual relatives had ever said anything like that. Not that she ever minded, but still. It was strange to be reciprocated.
“Don’t mind if I do, then!” She smoothed over the beat. “But if you lose, I’ll treat you instead, how’s that?”

#s://i~imgur~com/LZYraiD~jpg #s://i~imgur~com/Ji4BOxk~jpeg Jian internally breathed a sigh of relief when the Tim guy retrieved his pokemon. He was wondering what would've happened if that person's main rival were to lose in a battle like this. Though now he has to face an all new Blitzel that's also on full health (minus 10 after that last hit.)
The man sighed as he finally turned to face Baohao properly, now that he has no choice but to do so anyway.
"Well, guess we have no choice now but to focus on you, right?" Jian straighten himself out again, he might as well look like he's still taking it seriously. "C'mon, Yanyan, hit 'em with a strong Ember this time. I've never had zebra meat before."
Yanyan shook his head and gave himself a couple of licks over as smoke began emitting from the corners of his mouth.

What came out barely singed the zebra's coat and for once, the Litten almost looked a little apologetic.
"Guess I shouldn't have jinxed it," Jian ran a hand through his hair as he cast a side glance to Emery who was now sitting with Tim by the side."A return treat doesn't really make sense though. We might as well buy our own ice creams then. But y'know, 大哥 wouldn't mind either if you insist." He continued, half focusing on this weird side battle small talk just so that he doesn't have to deal with the reality of losing a tutorial battle.
227HP RAIDEN ATTACKS YANYAN: Shock Wave 1d50
The sound of crackling electricity and a bolt of lightning along with the most pained cat yowl brought Jian all the way back though as Baohao stood there and snapped his finger.
"Like I said man, focus!"
Yanyan hacked a little as smoke wafted off his body, he shook it off but he was obviously a little wobbly on his feet. "Tsk, if only I could just get a moment-" He hissed before shaking his body off.
Jian don't have this thought cross his mind often, but this was getting a little draggy and Yanyan clearly wasn't doing so hot. Though from the looks of their hp, they might have a decent chance of winning. He'll give it a couple more shots before making the very, very uncool decision of 'running' from the battle. Jian cringed at the thought.
He looked back down at the litten who finally got his bearings again, "You got your moment?"
"I wouldn't exactly call any of this a 'moment', but yeah. I can try for another shot."
124HP YANYAN ATTACKS RAIDEN: EMBER 1d50+10
An immense heat began building around Yanyan as an orange glow emitted from the small cat's mouth before the a big concentrated fireball of fur came shooting out of his mouth.
"Hell yeah, now THAT'S what I'm talking about!" Jian exclaimed proudly as the Blitzel on the other end frantically bucked while trying to get rid of the flames on its body.
Yanyan proudly puffed his chest out at the powerful attack, though it was clear that the fire was singeing his own mouth as well. Honestly, this could be all over by now if only there were status effects or something. Though there was a chance of them being paralyzed for multiple rounds due to all the shock waves the Blitzels were using.
168HP RAIDEN ATTACKS YANYAN: Shock Wave 1d50
It was clear the Blitzel was looking for a bit of revenge now as another powerful crack of lightning came bearing down on the Litten. Yanyan was now a little worse for wear, which was a little bit of any understatement at this point. His fur was all frazzled and no amount of grooming was getting it to stick down and while fire type weren't weak to electric types, Yanyan was not free from the occasional jolts of electricity.
Jian tapped his feet impatiently on the ground in frustration as he grappled with whether or not he should just take the loss and 'run'. Maybe he should ask the litten how he'd feel about it. Though he already had a feeling he already knew the answer.
"Hey Yanyan, do you think-"
"No."
"Pfft, thinkin about running away? Wouldn't be the first time." Baohao yelled over, crossing his arms.
"Yeah, you wish it were that easy."
70HP YANYAN ATTACKS RAIDEN: EMBER 1d50+10
Yeah, there's no 'evening out the playing field' here anymore. The last shot barely made a dent on Raiden and the zebra was already prepping his next attack.
137HP RAIDEN ATTACKS YANYAN: Shock Wave 1d50
34HP YANYAN ATTACKS RAIDEN: EMBER 1d50+10
It was clear Yanyan was on his last legs judging from how weak the attacks were getting.
104HP RAIDEN ATTACKS YANYAN: Shock Wave 1d50
Jian couldn't help but wonder now if the RNG was just tilting in his favor since they can't have two losses at the same time. Though he quickly pushed that thought aside at the risk of jinxing it.
20HP YANYAN ATTACKS RAIDEN: EMBER 1d50+10
As if some final blaze of glory type of attack, Yanyan spat out another big fireball, a little less powerful than the last but still enough to cause significant damage.
44HP RAIDEN ATTACKS YANYAN: Shock Wave 1d50
Jian squinted his eyes at the final bolt of lightning that hit Yanyan full on and as it dissipates, the litten slumped to the ground onto its' side with a soft thud.
"We'll be more prepared next time. you did your best." The man sighed before retrieving Yanyan back into his ball. He hasn't really kept him in ever since receiving him earlier.
On the other end, the Blitzel was panting as well before receiving supportive pats on it's side as Baohao re-balled it as well.
Jian made a face as the man approached him with his hands stuffed in his pockets. He looked unimpressed before exhaling from his nose. "Not bad, I guess." He extended a hand and Jian knowingly passes him Yanyan's pokeball. The familiar 'bwoop' sfx of a pokemon getting healed played somewhere as Baohao did the same weird motions Tim did before. Jian will never know how they did it. You'd think they tried to make it make sense when you're supposed to be immersed in the game.
"Don't think I'll go easy on you next time."
Jian couldn't help but sputter a laugh, "That was you going easy?!" Well, in the end, these are all just video game dialogue. No need to take seriously. "Yeah, sure I guess. Thanks for the ass kicking or whatever."
"And thanks for dragging my a** out to have my time wasted, TIM." It was clear that sentence was mostly directed at Tim Charles who was still sitting next to Emery on the bench. "You're fu*king paying for my next guitar exam if I fail it from not practicing!!" He pointed accusatorily at the twink in question.
Jian rolled his eyes before turning to face Emery as well. "So how bout that ice cream, huh?" He pocketed Yanyan's ball in his inventory for now. Guy deserves some rest.
