Josh, having returned from misadventures with Altair in the Kiddle Pool as he called it, needed to do something relaxing that didn't involve his Pokémon nearly bleeding out. Levels didn't matter when staring down the sheer quantity of Pokémon needed to encounter the one he needed. One of these days, he would need to get back to the Surge Steppes and go Ponyta hunting again. Zebstrika were fast in a sprint, but Rapidash were even faster. If the Pokédex was to be believed, they had incredible, almost whip-like acceleration, going from zero to top speed in just a few running strokes. It was miraculous and terrifying to think about a mount that could outperform race cars in that aspect.
A rumor of a shop that offered facemaking services came to the forefront of his attention. It was a rumor Josh was following up on with Alicia Westfield on one side and Saber, his Manectric, on the other. One day, he would be able to command the electric wolf like he did his Zebstrika and Mudsdale, though that was several levels off. "So I got to thinking... you have your Gardener class to make your Pokémon bigger. And there's this... facemaking thing that can supposedly make me younger and smaller. If this works the way I think it does... could you imagine the kinds of Pokémon that would open up for us? I might ask you to return to the Arena for a Nincada..." Alicia Westfield

When it came to exploring UNOVR, of course Alicia would be up to joining her first real friend. It’d only taken a quick message to have the two meet up. And she did need her own break. Her own searches were… not fruitful either. And hers had had added stresses so far that made things far more emotional than she had been bargaining for. So a quick jaunt for rumor chasing was just what the doctor ordered. Not that Dr. Bunya likely counted as an actual practitioner of medicine… But regardless, having the knowledge of where a metaphorical ‘reset button’ for avatar choices was would be good in case she ever grew tired of what she was currently using, so she was invested in this as well. Albeit, not quite as much as Josh was. Though… when he was explaining his thought processes, she was very careful to maintain a neutral, or even slightly positive expression. Internally, she wondered what mind-numbing horror had she just possibly unleashed upon this poor, unprepared game. First the mad doctor’s doodling in response to her questionnaire answers. Now this? ”It would certainly bring a whole new world of ride-capable Pokemon into the metaphorical fray. But getting a type mod is a bit expensive, isn’t it? Never mind that you have to be aware of what type you’re replacing, so double that in the event you need a Primary and a Secondary mod.”She wasn’t going to seriously try to dissuade him. But she felt it was her due diligence to remind him of the costs his plan potentially had. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Josh Devlin

"That's exactly it," Josh nodded as he gave the electric Pokémon a gentle pat on the snout. "From what I've seen of Tikani, your Gardener class lets you make Grass-type Pokémon roughly the size of Alphas. Together, this would let me hop on Pokémon that are normally too small, even as Alphas. We're grinding the arena for Arena Points anyway, right? Cause we both want legendary Pokémon? This is just another incentive to do so." He daydreamed about how fast it would be; the terrain zipping past like a strobe light of natural colors. "You know how Ninjask are so fast than they can look like there's more than one, even without using Double Team? Well, imagine all that speed focused in one direction."
There were other Pokémon that came to mind, too. "Swellow is another one. Linoone, another. And it's not like I'll have to buy more than two or so. It comes with a small cost, but they can be moved to another Pokémon." He also needed other Type Mods for combat purposes; Bolter was going to be his main class, so having a lot of Electric Type Mods would be worthwhile.
The farther west they went, the seedier the place began. Buildings were of lower quality, road maintenance looked poorer, and there was even a street urchin or two along the way that looked like they could creepily tail them. Despite the town being a neutral zone, he still felt threatened. "This place sure isn't exactly in a good part of town, is it?" he mused as they rounded a corner.

”Well, I more want TMs for Tikani, Giyun, and the others.” Alicia noted. ”Duraludon and the Chikorita line especially have move pools that feel a bit anemic.”Still, it would be good to have a more realistic ‘rival’ battle experience. Her encounter with the NPC Rival… did not go very well, when it came time for the tutorial fight. She nodded along quietly as Josh went on about Ninjask’s speed. The beetle had Speed Boost as its default ability for a reason, after all. She could believe it would leave afterimages of itself even without the Double Team move. And she opted to not try to imagine focusing that speed. The estimations that came unbidden made her feel a bit faint. ”Oh yeah, they are fairly easy to move around, aren’t they?” Alicia asked at the reminder that a type mod was not a one-and-done deal. But even she got a bit nervous as their search took them into seedier parts of the area. In real life this would probably be the moment where she took one look at Josh, told him ‘You can keep going if you want, but this is where I call it quits’, and turned right on her heel and bolted. Helen would do that, because she’s a normal and plain Jane with no real connections to anyone. But Alicia was supposed to be a hero, someone special and capable and amazing. What was a little seediness to someone like that? So in spite of the apprehension that built, the pinkette didn’t let it show and smiled instead. ”Can’t say I’m surprised we’re getting into the rougher parts of town. Getting new, fake-by-definition identification generally falls under criminal activity. It makes sense that the NPC that handles such a service is… not exactly on the up-and-up as they say.”Josh Devlin

Josh didn't play on UNOVR to be competitively viable. He played to get the experience of freedom of travel. To saddle up, let the wind assault his face, and feel like he could go anywhere. "I've got my eyes on a couple, but I really want a Galarian Zapdos. Or even both. The Kantonian variety can fly at quite the clip, too. You know electric Pokémon are the fastest kind on average, right?" he half-teased. Because of course a speed racer would know which type was fastest.
With names like Wyldside, Duggar's, and Bloo Moose, this part of town wasn't exactly inviting to honest folk like Josh. His eyes shifted nervously, keeping an eye out for pickpockets seeking to relieve passers-by of their BYTES. "Wouldn't surprise me, either. It's part of why I'd rather get out of here as soon as we're finished with our business here." Alicia Westfield

”Kind of hard to forget that. I remember using an Electrode in Stadium for the Mewtwo battle because of how fast it was. You basically had to paralyze that thing or you were never getting anywhere.” Alicia noted with a smirk. Of course, with the parts they were getting to… Alicia hummed and tossed a pokeball. Her Duraludon appeared in short order. The two shared a look, and Giyun nodded. The steel dragon fell into step with his trainer as an imposing bodyguard. Between him and Saber, they made for an impressive pair of protectors. Certainly not insurmountable by any means, but it would give such thieving NPCs more to consider. ”Should be nearby. If the rumor we’re following is accurate at least.” She commented with a hum, keeping her own head on a swivel. One could never be too careful. ”… Though we’re probably going to have to go into murky alleyways to look for this NPC. I doubt he’s going to be just out in the open…”Josh Devlin

Ah, the limitations of first generation. Could Josh even finish the game solely with Pokémon he liked? It seemed impossible while maintaining level parity with the foes. "Kakuna and Metapod hunting would be an agonizing way to gain the levels needed to handle Brock with a type disadvantage. Thankfully, there aren't many Ground-type Pokémon that are saddle-worthy, heh," he snickered as Giyun made several NPCs' heads turn.
After passing a few intersections, Josh saw their first turn. "Eighth Avenue, here it is. Now we need to keep our eyes out for a Sweeper Shop. In the rear of that is supposedly what we're looking for." Low-quality buildings and the occasional sign of a repaired bullet hole were signs that the dangers were rising... Alicia Westfield

There was also the fact that Generation 1 was, frankly, a mess. Though Josh’s comment did get a curious glance from Alicia as she quirked an eyebrow. ”… You know that neither of Brock’s Pokemon have Rock moves, right? In Gen 1 and Gen 3 at least. And their awful special defense means Ember still hits shockingly hard despite being resisted? Alternately, the glaring lack of Rock moves makes Butterfree’s Confusion just… a straight hard counter.” the hero wannabe mused. Then she chuckled at her own unintended joke, as the man in question was all about commenting on the hardness of rocks. But as she thought about it, she huffed. ”Though I suppose getting Butterfree would still fall into the grind hell just a bit, wouldn’t it? And that doesn’t change that Charmander has a horrible time compared to Bulbasaur and Squirtle. And that Misty’s still a pain for Charmander starts…”She did flush a bit as she noticed Giyun got them more attention than they had previously. But she couldn’t deny the comfort of having arguably her strongest teammate out and available for protection. So she wasn’t going to change her mind on having the Duraludon out and about. ”Sweeper Shop huh…?” Alicia mused curiously, as she stuck close to the armored beast she’d called out. She could read the signs too, and even heroes took precautions. But even she looked a bit nervous now. ”… You don’t think there’s actually going to be a shoot out, yeah? That… this is just for the appropriate… ‘ambience’, I guess, of a seedy back alley zone…?”It was only naturally to be spooked about the possibility of bullets flying. Josh Devlin

"Don't remind me," Josh replied. "It got so bad in Yellow that Nidoran get Double Kick over 30 levels before they did in Red." Even so, it was a grind. Poison-types were laughably bad before the Fairy-type existed, what with almost every grass-type also being poison-type. Seeing their turn, the trainer and his Manectric followed it toward the dangerous-looking alley, his skin tingling as he could feel a field of static forming around the Manectric. Perhaps Alicia Westfield could feel it, too.
He took a look inside the Sweeper Shop's window. It looked to be a shop full of items and upgrades for Sweepers, advertising itself as one of the few places in town where high-tier Sweeper upgrades could be purchased. "The price tags on those top-tier upgrades, though..." he trailed off as he passed the place and deeper into the alleyway, hearing his friend's concerns. "You're not the only one. I certainly wouldn't want to be holding aces and eights right now," he joked to try to improve the mood.

Alicia took a calming breath as she waved for Giyun to follow once Josh located the turn they needed. ”Mankey was a really rare spawn in Yellow too, wasn’t it? And not present at all until after the first gym in Red and Blue… huh, for such a fan favorite over the years, Charizard really got the short end of the stick at the beginning…”She did try to smooth out her hair, which was just slightly poofing a bit from the charge Saber was passively building in his moment of tension. Of course, she also couldn’t help but notice all the rather expensive upgrades that could be acquired. With a quick swipe she opened her own UI and made a note for herself marking down the coordinates of the shop. While her usual game plan prioritized survival above all else, she’d eventually run out of Tank upgrades to buy and would come back here someday. … She’d probably work on her Healer tree before then if she ended up finding a good Pokemon to slot in there. Though Josh’s little joke got an unamused stare from the Gardener. ”Really? You had to go there? Since I think one of us actually got the Dead Man’s Hand when we played in Firewater.”Of course, while she was distracted, there was a skulking figure sneaking up on her. ”OI!”The thieving NPC jumped at Giyun’s roar, which alerted Alicia, making her wheel and spot the ne’er-do-well making a run for it as her angry dragon tried to cut him off with some fast clawing strikes. ”I’ll be right back, Josh! Giyun, launch me!””Wha- O-Okay?” Giyun rumbled out in confusion as the thief got away from him. Alicia hopped onto his tail, at which point Giyun realized what he was supposed to do, Swiping with his tail to give his trainer some momentum to help her cut the thief off, lumbering off after her in short order. Which would leave Josh alone to decide what he was going to do about the whole mini-debacle. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Even Josh had started to feel Saber's static. Were he to procure a saddle for the giant electric dog, would riding him even be a good idea? The constant tingling feeling would have to be so distracting, on top of all the other things he had to keep awareness of while in the saddle.
There sure was a lot more to riding than meets the eye, wasn't there?
Before he could respond to Alicia's remark about the Dead Man's Hand, a common thief looked like they were attempting to steal from her. The girl hopped onto Giyun's tail, who promptly catapulted her past the fleeing street rat. "I'll cut him off!" Josh shouted, assuming the thief's gender. "Saber!"
The electric wolf, much faster than even the most slippery human, dashed forward in an effort to pin the pickpocket between himself and the Duraludon. They weren't getting away with thievery on his watch! Alicia Westfield

With the ever-fast reactions Josh was practically known for by now (at least among those that played with him consistently enough), Alicia’s own daring move (letting her land in the cutpurse’s path and roll back to her feet), and Giyun’s imposing approach, they had the thief cornered in moments. The human in front could delay him long enough for back-up, the Manectric could cut off the flanks, and going through the titan of steel behind him was tactical suicide. For a moment, things were tense. The Cornered Rat Bites Back after all. But this time, the rat seemed to think better of it, holding his hands up in surrender. Cautiously, Alicia took the chance to approach, quirking an eyebrow. Fortunately, the stolen bag was in one of the thief’s hands, and she pried it back from him, checking the contents to make sure there wasn’t a fast one being pulled on her. ”Don’t let me catch you like this again, m’kay?” Alicia commented as she properly reclaimed her funds. Stepping aside, she let the scoundrel race away, sans his attempt at ill-gotten gains. In this section of the area, waiting for police NPCs, which might or might not all be Officer Jennies if that quirk of the anime were carried on, was likely begging for gang trouble. ”Well, now that that bit of excitement’s out of the way, lets actually finish what we came here for, ya? Thanks for the back up too. Without Saber there he might’ve tried to fight his way out.”——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Josh had quick reaction times in the real world, which transferred to UNOVR seamlessly. Perhaps one day he would find an ability that augmented such a strength further. That was a ways down the line, particularly with how the event schedule kept being delayed. "I'm getting close to getting my first legendary Pokémon," he made small talk with Alicia after the unexpected escapades had ended and his friend had recovered their stolen BYTES. "I'm still deciding, but my number one choice is still Galarian Zapdos."
At last, the duo would arrive at their destination: Briarbane's Identity Parlor, and quite possibly the only one in all of UNOVR. While the building looked raggedy from the outside, it looked pristine on the inside, like it was frequented by only the upper class.
A suited doorman stopped Josh in his tracks before he could get much further than the lobby. "Proof of membership?"
Josh frowned. "So you're saying that this Identity Parlor isn't even open to the public?"
The older man, growing impatient with him, repeated, "Proof of membership?"
"Don't have any. How do I become a member?"
"We can't just give anyone the power of youth or of old age. Prospective members have to be of a certain... social class... to be considered. The first step to membership is proving your work ethic and frugality. Show me your wallet with two thousand BYTES in it, and that will be your first step toward membership."
Josh's jaw dropped. Had he known this, he wouldn't have dropped seven hundred maxing out his Kindler class in preparation for an upcoming mission in Ostellia. "...Why so much?" Alicia Westfield

Alicia flashed a grin at that, humming. ”You sure you still want to go with Zapdos? After getting overwhelmed to such a degree with Raiden?”The near-disastrous moment on the Surge Steppes was fresh enough in her mind. The bolts of lightning crashing around had given Raiden a boost neither of them had appropriately accounted for. And her later calcs on the topic confirmed her initial suspicions as to the speeds Josh had hit well before he was ready. She could just see it now, if Josh proceeded too quickly with acquiring a Zapdos he was going to be in a world of hurt. … That said, the level limit was likely to cull those worries on his own. She couldn’t imagine any Legendary having a low level limit for riding. And the scout loved his speed enough that just on virtue of experiencing it more often he’d probably acclimate himself. ”Maybe I’m worrying for nothing…” She muttered off hand without thinking about it, while Josh took the lead on approaching the suddenly appearing presumably-bouncer. And then she balked at the price. Two grand was a lot to ask for in this situation. A quick glance at her own available funds showed she was only about half-way. With most of that already earmarked for upgrades she was going to do soon. So she couldn’t exactly afford to spend it elsewhere if changing avatars required a big expenditure. And from the look on Josh’s face, he had made some big purchases as well. Even if they pooled their current resources, they wouldn’t have enough. So Alicia stepped in, taking Josh’s hand and gently tugging him away from the Identity Parlor’s door. ”We’re so sorry for bothering you then, sir. Don’t mind us, we’ll be on our way.”Shooting the scout a sad look, Alicia sighed softly. ”Well, looks like we’re out of luck for the time being… honestly I at least should’ve expected this. Behind meta-relevant purchases, cosmetics are always the second most expensive things. I mean, just remember the Villa in Platinum. The place itself was free, sure, but safe to say getting all the stuff to furnish it was… a lot. So unless you’ve got some kind of back-up plan, we’re going to have to come back later.”The Gardener shrugged a bit, smiling sadly. ”At least we have the coords of where the place is now?”——————————————————————— Josh Devlin [/b]
