"It's an energy drink," Yggy said to Dingo the Snubbull, pushing her way through a curtain of vines. "It's kinda gross and sugary, but it makes you really hyper. That's what my mom says, anyway."
Dingo, despite his name, was a fairy-type bulldog in a dress with a face like an old man, but much like a chihuahua, he seemed to have no idea how un-cool and un-frightening he was. The pink dog puffed up his chest, swaggering as he jumped over holes in the understory. "That's indubitable," he sneered, looking over his shoulder at Yggy. "Everyone knows that."
"Oh, really? I thought it was kinda rare. Like, it's only sold in Japan apparently because nowhere else will buy it. My dad brought me back some from a business trip," Yggy said, clearly not offended. Dingo was so funny, she couldn't take the little snot seriously at all. "Hey, keep an eye out for exeggcute, by the way. They were talking about a Great Old One or something last time I was here."
"Why? You gonna make a barter with it or something?" Dingo snapped.
"No way! I'll get my soul stolen or something. That would be freaky." Even in a video game, Yggy didn't want to know what that would feel like.

Yggy wanted to say she hadn't always just been some kid running through random areas hoping to run into cool Pokémon, but she kinda had been.
"Anyway, I brought up Jungleman because I thought we might be able to make it," Yggy said. "Just need some sugarcane, you know? And uh, ginseng. And taurine." All that stuff probably grew in the Canopy if she just looked hard enough, right? This place was like the Garden of Eden, it probably had all the seeds of every plant in the world. Unless Codie had deleted them.
Despite everything that had happened, she still couldn't decide how she felt about Codie. They'd played baseball together so many times. He'd glitched and bothered her and friends so many times in the tutorials. And he'd also deleted her and caused a bunch of trauma she was trying not to relive, so that was a whole thing too. How do you feel about someone after all that?
Maybe a friend you decide to eventually forgive. An acquaintance you try not to spend more time with. And an enemy - well, then it was pretty much what you expected, right?
"Hey dipship, you coming?" Dingo bounced ahead. Yggy saw what he was heading for too late. "Hey watch out! There's a-"

"...banana peel."
It was something out of Mario, or maybe an old-style Looney Toons cartoon. There was even a canned sound effect as the Snubbull stepped directly onto the piece of discarded fruit, then immediately pulled a vertical 360 as the world's most slippery, friction-free item took effect. Yggy could have sworn there was even a boi-yoi-yo-yoing! spring sound for extra comedic effect as the dog fell on his back in the mud. Or maybe that was the sound effect for Yggy's eyeballs, because she looked up.[/u]
Bananas didn't grow on trees, after all. Well, they did, but whenever she'd been in the canopy in the past Yggy had always picked them from Tropius.
"Oh man, that's a little one!"
This Tropius had a little Chimchar swinging off the side of its head, picking the bananas, eating them, then throwing them down. "Hey! That's wasteful!" Yggy exclaimed. She looked around her feet, then saw a rock she could throw. "Get outta here, Chimchar!" She chucked it at the fire ape, who let out a monkey-scream of alarm and leapt away into the Canopy.
Dingo didn't see the real culprit, though. He just saw Tropius.
"I'll defenestrate you!"

"Aw man, no, don't do it..."
Picking a fight here was never gonna go well. Yggy was all about battling despite the odds, but Dingo was just a puppy who talked big. No way he could take on a Tropius, even a little one.
"C'mon Ding, we'll be here for hours if we fight it."
"It attacked me first!" The Snubbull growled threateningly, advancing on the grass dinosaur. To the Tropius's credit, it didn't look like the grass-type had even noticed they were there. Must be nice being that tall, Yggy thought, then an idea occurred to her. Hey... maybe if I catch it it'll be strong enough to make it on the Briarbane Basketball team! From that height it could shoot all kinds of hoops, right?
"Okay, fine. Use uh..." Yggy pulled up her user interface and messed around, trying to find Dingo's move list. "Use... Bite or something. I'm sure you can bite. One sec."

We probably should have healed before the battle, Yggy thought, watching the Snubbull's HP plummeting as she tried to get past the stat pentagons and onto the actual useful page. "Stupid thing... okay, here we go. Hey, Fire Fang!" And Ice Fang and Thunder Fang too! Wow, Dingo was like a whole legendary bird trio in one! In his mouth. Or something. Anyway.
"How do I shtart the fire?" Dingo demanded. His words came out heavily slurred, since he currently had a mouthful of the Tropius's leg. The dinosaur had stopped chewing, as if realizing something was bothering it. It lifted its leg and shook it ever so slightly.
Dingo blew back and forth like he was in a hurricane, his skirts ruffling wildly and turning inside out like an umbrella.
"Uh, I don't know! Think firey thoughts!" Yggy yelled, trying to be helpful. "Like, fighting spirit!"
"Itff not working!"

Bad. Bad bad bad. How do you start a fire in the wild? Yggy didn't have any survival training or anything. She watched a lot of YouTube, but nothing like that.
"Uh, I think you need flint! Can you..." An idea was forming in her blonde, teenage mind. "Gnash your teeth together first? Like, try to make a spark like that."
"Little busy here!"
It seemed like a move to start before actually running in and locking your jaw, come to think of it. But bulldogs were meant to be a bite trap. They weren't supposed to dive in and out, gracefully slashing the opponent and darting away again. They bit and they didn't let go.
"You gotta let go, Ding!"
Aware it was a futile request, Yggy tried yelling it as loud as she could to increase the chances of it reaching Dingo. This was a losing battle. They could always come back later to try and find a tall banana boy for the Briarbane team.
But it wasn't about basketball for the Snubbull. It was about banana peels, and looking like a dipslip (whatever that was).

Something cool on UNOVR was that you got BYTES for battling. Instead of EXP. Though since BYTES could only be used like EXP, they kinda ended up being the same thing in the end. The point was that even though Dingo's short little non-flaming teeth weren't so much as breaking the Tropius's skin, they were still getting paid by the servers for being there. Pretty nifty, seriously. Would it be mean of her to just kind of... pull up a chair and wait this out? Like Ash Ketchum in the first season of the anime when his and that dude's metapod were battling? I wonder if there's Metapod here. Those were cool Pokémon. Her dad had always said they looked like little green crescent-moons. "All right, hang in there then," Yggy said, giving up on reasoning with Dingo and checking her wallet. "Woah! Cool! Check out that nest!"
While craning her head, trying to imagine seeing the world from Tropius height, Yggy had noticed something. A nest, decorated with so many kinds of different things that she almost couldn't tell what it was to begin with. But between the tin cans, scarves, jello packets, earrings, Mini_Codie fragments, feathers, gears, and used cutips, Yggy could see the typical sticks and twigs of your standard bird nest.
The nest was awesome.
Yggy had already lost her interest in Tropius, Snubbull, and the very slow BYTE increase trickling in like molasses from the UNOVR Cloud above. She wanted bird.
"Hey Tropius! What made that thing?" Yggy cupped her hands around her mouth and yelled up to the grass-type, who finally responded. The long, long neck came arching down closer, giving the blonde trainer a thoughtful, close-up view of its giant eyeball. In the background, Yggy heard the kshhh sound effect of Snubbull fainting. What a dork.
"Are you talking to me?" the creature asked, slowly and carefully. Yggy stood her ground.
"You bet!"

"Why don't you see for yourself?" asked the Tropius after a moment.
Yggy lit up.
A couple minutes later, she was seated on the dinosaur's head as it lifted up that long, long neck again. She felt like Littlefoot on his grandma's head as the canopy floor vanished beneath her. Instead, she got a great view of the understory- bromeliads, vines, and huge chunks of square binary where foliage used to be.
The nest looked even more crazy close-up. And it was bigger than Yggy had realized. But there was one problem.
"Hey, there's no eggs."
"The Chimchar ate them all," said the Tropius, and Yggy made a horrified face. "Wait, what? You're kidding, right? They eat eggs and bananas?" That was messed up. What kind of Pokemon ate two things?
Well, now she felt kind of sad. The nest looked so empty and alone. Then, she had an idea.
Yggy turned around and unzipped her backpack, pulling out-- tadaa!-- a plain brown egg. Grinning, she scooched forward on the dino's head and gingerly deposited it in the middle of the nest. "There we go! That's better, right? It looks more lived-in."
"The Chimchar will just come back and eat this one too," Tropius pointed out. Yggy covered the egg with her hands. "No! I won't let 'em!"
"Are you going to stay here too then?"
"Well..."

Yggy hesitated. There was no way she could stay here in a (admittedly, very cool) bird's nest guarding the egg from stupid Chimchar (her achilles heel) for the rest of the game. She still had to find her dad, and there would probably eventually be a raid she needed to participate in and stuff.
"The parents have already gone," said the Tropius, gently. "You don't need to stay here. Or leave your egg."
"Aww... I guess you're right," the blonde admitted, rubbing the back of her neck. Sometimes she acted without really thinking things through. "It really does look perfect there though." The little brown egg, surrounded by weird and sparkly things. It made it look more exciting, somehow.
Crack.
"Oh?" said the Tropius as the shell fell off and a little bird head poked out.
"Oh!!" Yggy exclaimed as the little Pokemon stretched out its head and kicked the shell off its wings. "A baby Pidgey! Cute!"
Well, now she definitely couldn't leave it here.

The Pidgey pecked around itself, seizing a shiny earring from the pile and pulling it loose. Sensing a choking hazard, Yggy lunged forward to grab it from the bird, who squawked and flapped her stubby wings angrily.
"Cut it out! Don't swallow that, it'll cut up your guts!"
"I don't wanna eat it! I wanna wear it!"
Wear it in what ears, Yggy wanted to ask, but relented. "Okay, sure," she said instead, and threaded the sparkly earring through one of the Pokemon's feathery eyebrows. "There. That ought to stay," she said, sitting back on Tropius's head. "I'm gonna call you Junkrat! After the Overwatch character." Kenny was a poser and didn't really know who that was, but someone would probably find it clever.
"Congratulations," said Tropius as Yggy collected her new Pokemon and they were both returned to the forest floor.
Tropius looked like it was about to leave, so Yggy waved at it again and the big head came down once more. "Hey, wait! I wanted to ask if you liked basketball."
There was a pause. "I can't say for sure," the Pokemon said cautiously. "I don't know what it is."
"It's a cool game- well, pretty cool, there's cooler ones," Yggy said, thinking of baseball, "Anyway, it's a cool game where you have to be really tall and put a ball through a basket. I bet you'd be great at it! I uh..." She couldn't really say she was good at it or could help her train. After all, she hadn't even made it on the team.
"I can uh, introduce you to someone who's really good!"
The Tropius considered. "I suppose it's better than having all these Chimchar eating my bananas all the time," it said thoughtfully. Yggy beamed. "Cool! Then it's... catching time!"
Three flashes of the golden Pokeball. One to recall Dingo. One to confirm the hatch of Junkrat. And the last, to catch a Tropius, the up-and-coming star of the Briarbane Bandanas.

After healing up her Snubbull, Yggy sat down on a fallen log and sent a message to Big Bee. She dangled her legs into one of the blank tiles left behind after the deletion, kicking them idly like a child alone at the pool. It felt weird inside - the humid, steamy jungle air just cutting away in a hard line where her legs disappeared into the code. It was kinda like sitting on the edge of the dock with her feet in the water. Only instead of cool, this just felt like... Nothing. Yggy shivered and pulled her legs out of the tile, hugging them to her chest instead. When Big Bee arrived she waved him down, grinning. "Hey! I got the Pokémon right here! It's a Tropius." She tried to spin the grass-type's pokeball on her finger and failed. "Whoops! Anyway, you want it? It's pretty nice. It let me ride on its head to see that big nest." Yggy pointed at it. "What do you think built it? I bet it was a big bird. Maybe even a legendary, hey! Or Rayquaza!" Now she was getting excited! |

Big Bee was finishing off a foot long sandwich when he got the message. He texted back quickly, getting sauce on his UI.
Big Bee finished his sandwich and fast-travelled to Beta Island. He arrived to find Yggy inspecting some sort of Rayquaza nest.
"Whoa! I bet you could fit like 30...maybe 35 normal bird Pokemon in there!"
Big Bee didn't know Tropius, but as the resident Big Bro it was his job to know more about Pokemon. "Wait, you caught a Tropius? Hell yeah! I've been looking for one! I love their...whole vibe, you know?" He nodded, looking at the Pokeball Yggy was spinning and wishing it was transparent. "So what do you want for it, Ygglster?"

Yggy laughed way too long at the cool pun Big Bee had sent her. "Hahaha, that's hilarious!" she said, grinning broadly. "I'll totally tell someone that's what my name is next time I introduce myself." She was running out of weird things Yggy could be short for anyway.
She also lit up when Big Bee responded positively to the word "Tropius." It never occurred to her Big Bro might not know what one was. Hadn't everyone been playing Pokémon games since Gen 5? "I know right!" she said eagerly. "They're so awesome. And those bananas, right?"
Speaking of food, Big Bee had said he was eating a sandwich. "So how was the sub? I like meatball," she said. "Wait, did you go to Blarnes and Noble? Awww! We should have met there!" Yggy loved that place! She was always trying to get a spot in there, but it was always packed. Which sucked, because it had been a good place to study before it got popular. Now she had the whole library in the church of the endless downpour, though, so it was no biggie. She still got hungry sometimes, though.
"Stuff to trade...uhhh... anything's fine," Yggy admitted, rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly. Thinking about Ol' Blarney made her realize something, however, and she lit up. "Oh wait, how about a Magikarp? I heard there's a dungeon coming up I need one to get into. You have a Fishing Rod, right?" She leaned forward eagerly.
