"Fishing is just applied psychology," Buzzster told his unfortunate fishing partner. He leaned back in the dingy and took a deep drink from his flask. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and offered the flask to his partner before continuing.
"Fish are like women, which means they're attracted to three things." He held up three lures for emphasis. Each of them was heavily bedazzled.
He untangled his sandals from the fishing line at the bottom of the boat and attached the lures to the end.
"Fish love Michael Buble, fake diamonds, and brand name handbags."
He whipped out a pocket knife and scratched a Gucci symbol into each of the lures. Then, with a swift flick of his wrist he whipped the fishing rod in a perfect cast, send the lures arcing gracefully into the pond.
"Now I can't sing. This mouth was made for fast talking and faster loving. So you're going to have to do the singing. Alright?"

Verai hadn't been out even an hour, and he was exhausted. He had wanted a day on the water, just still reflection and the peace of isolation. Maybe introducing kitten and kitty to the water, if they were up to it. What he'd gotten was... something different entirely.
Verai was entirely uninterested in what women, or fish, were "attracted" to. Even recently, when he had the time to care about others' opinion of him... women's concerns were not his own. However, he was fairly certain neither fish, nor women, loved fake diamonds, handbags, or whatever a Michael Brûlée was.
That was because he was quite aware of what women were attracted to. Brianna was drawn to clothing sales racks, homemade chashu don, and incredibly strange youtube videos. To be fair, she did like fake diamonds, like the lab stuff though, not the... glorified glass things.
"I'm not singing." He said simply. Litten, however, disagreed, scrabbling to the front of the dinghy, looking wide-eyed out over the water. Raaaaahhhhhhhhhheyooooooooogh! She didn't know why Purrai wasn't excited- This was fun!

"Perfect! That sounds just like his Christmas album!" Buzzster said as Littleo's yowling carried across the still lake. "With that racket going on they'll come swimming in no time. Hell, we might even have fish jumping up into the boat!"
He took another swig of the flask and set it down on the seat next to him. "Glad to have you," Zac said to his fishing partner "you're the perfect mix of quiet company and hunter. I told you that fishing is applied psychology, and who can get into their heads better than a catman!" He laughed at the half-joke, and wiggled his lure. He could already feel something nibbling.
"Did you bring a rod, or is this going to be a 'two guys one carp' type of situation?"

It seemed like all this man did was talk, and Verai was incredibly grateful, for his sake, that his life had been fortunate enough to allow him to ramble on endlessly, unimpeded. The rambling still, somehow, gave no inclination to what Michael Boray was, aside from a singer. Most likely. However, it also did nothing to hamper Litten's spirit, the pokemon twisting to look back at him, wide-eyed. <Really??? Yeah!!! I'm a really good singer!!> she crooned, pawing gently at the air reflexively.
At the joke, Verai felt his ears pin backwards, though he tried to keep the irritation from the rest of his face. He was- what, just supposed to understand how fish operated? Because he put cat ears on his stupid little icon thing?
The comment about carp went ignored- His tone said it was meaningful, but Verai had no fucking idea what it was supposed to mean. "No." He said, not elaborating on which he was saying no to, and braced on hand on the rim of the dinghy to peer out over the water, studying it. Had he done this before? Absolutely not. But he trusted his reflexes, and his body. This was within his capability.

"No problems there, I can talk enough for the two of us," Zac assured him, as his feline friend focused on the placid waters around them. Was he going to try and catch a fish by hand? "Getting in there hands first ay?" Buzzster asked, taking another swig of his flask. "I saw a bear do that up in Montana one time, but they kicked me out of the club bathroom before I could see how it ended."
There was a nibble on his bait. "Whoa! I think I've got someone comin' in for a bite of my rhinestone Gucci, if you catch my drift." He looked over at the caterwalling Litten. "Crank up the Buble, I'm bringing it in!"
And in a wash of freshwater spray, swearing, and helpful vines from his Chikorita, Buzzster landed the [Bigness]x_HiZ9801d100 [Description]1d90 [Blarney]1d100! 1d100·1d90·1d100

Litten had paused her singing to listen intently, ears swiveled back. The Nice Man was fun to listen to. <What's a bear?> She asked, tail swishing. Maybe it was also nice.
Verai tuned out everything he didn't need, leaving only the soft motion of the boat, the shift of the waters, the glint of scales that flashed when caught by sunlight. The refraction, how it pulled images sideways, how much, how deep they were. He took a slow breath, as Kitten started in again, screeching loudly-
And the whole dinghy rocked, Verai hissing as he turned, seeing his new companion struggling with a large hunk of coral. It was.... festive looking. It wasn't solidly colored, but instead thin stripes of red and white, like a candy cane. It also had, for some reason, round ornaments hanging from the coral, a few of which had fallen off and were rolling around in the dingy. "What the fuck is that."
Litten had scampered from her position as Helmskitten, and had hidden behind Purrai and Nice Man, peering out at the frightful Thing that'd been fished up. However, the ornaments were more exciting, and she hopped to play with one. <Oh! This is fun! I wanna sing again!>

"Big hairy bugger," Buzzster explained. He wracked his brain for a basic Pokemon analogy. "Imagine if you were about ten times as big, and stood up on your back legs. Just some massive, muscular menace all covered in fur as black as winter darkness. Taller than me and able to rip a man in half!"
Zac had no idea that the Litten would some day fulfil that prophecy, and his mental image was far from accurate.
"It's, uh, a bloody Christmas tree I guess. Looks worse for wear though. Is it made of candy canes?" Zac gave it an experimental lick. It tasted like a farm salt lick.
Corsola screamed and Zac shouted out. He slammed a ball into the Pokemon and it disappeared in a flash of red.
"I can guarantee it's not peppermint," he said gravely.
He was itching for another chance at pulling in a winner, but didn't want to disturb Verai's hunting. "Let's give the Buble a rest for a sec."

Verai watched Zac handle the coral, and watched him proceed to lick it. "Why would it be made of candy?" He asked, disbelieving. This man was, quite truly, something else. Kitten, though, was rapt, watching him, watching the corsola shriek and vanish. <Wait! I wanted a lick!> She cried, scrabbling over to Nice Man and pawing at his leg. <Where did it go??>
Verai sighed, but it was fondness at Kitten, rather than any exasperation. He turned back to the water, studying it again. There was a flicker of darkness that he watched, an ear twitching unconsciously as he did. With a breath, he lunged, splashing into the water and vanishing a moment. He then reached up, grabbing onto the dingy's edge to haul himself back up, dumping a [Bigness]Ht_ZJh061d100 [Description]1d90 [Blarney]1d100 into the boat with his other hand. 1d100·1d90·1d100

Zac helped the other man back into the boat. He was entranced by the new Pokemon that Verai had just caught. It was tiny and frilly. It reminded him of his stage assistants in Vegas.
"Okay gimme a go," Buzzster said, putting his rod away. He closed his eyes and, more surprisingly, his mouth.
Silence spread like Crisco across the lake.
With his eyes closed he felt his other senses strengthen to compensate.
He could almost feel the fish wriggling around below them.
Almost sense them.
Almost taste them...or was that just the salty Corsol from before?
The thick quiet was broken by Zac making a high pitching clicking noise. The sound reverberated off the water, ricocheting like sonar waves.
He clicked again. His tongue snapping in his mouth as he let out the strange clicks, eyes still closed.
Suddenly his head whipped around, and he pointed out to starboard. "There! Two feet down!" he yelled, before diving into the water.
He surfaced a moment later, victorious, with a [Bigness]f7OBd5yv1d100 [Description]1d90 [Blarney]1d100 gripped in his hands. 1d100·1d90·1d100

Verai frowned, watching Zac fall still and silent. He kept quiet himself, watching the ebb of the water, the ripples in the distance.
And then Zac started clicking, and Verai found himself... with doubts. Was he... trying to hear where the fish were? Like bats? Through the water? It all seemed about one step too far removed from reality, but.... Sure enough, Buzzster shouted and threw himself into the water. Verai debated going after him but... He'd wait a moment. If there was no sign of him, then he'd dive in.
He was somewhat relieved to see Zac surface, though grabbing the massive urchin with his hands felt... ill advised. "What was all that?" He growle,d helping haul Zac back into the boat. "You know urchin can be venomous, right?" He didn't really trust the distance between this game and real life- Sure, Bria had said it was perfectly safe, but he wasn't going to go stab himself with something on a whim.
Kitten had been watching this all very intently. First Purrai, and then Nice Man. You jump into the water, and you come out with a friend! It was easy- It had to be, right? They both had done it so wonderfully! So, she moved to the edge of the dingy, wiggled, and flung herself into the water.
Which, naturally, meant Verai lunged after her, surfacing with a spluttering, very upset litten in one hand, and a [Bigness]pvICU_C31d100 [Description]1d90 [Blarney]1d100 in the other. <Purrai! It's so wet! I'm cold! It's salty! I don't like it! I'm scared! I want out!> 1d100·1d90·1d100

"Venomous? Nah you're thinking of poisonous!" Zac said, accepting the strong hand of his fishing friend and clambering, sopping wet, back into the boat. "I had a whole plate of 'em when I was in Bali and I swear I mustn't have built up a natural immunity to them as a kid because I had to have my bloody appendix out!"
He caught the massive urchin, only pricking himself a few times on the venomous spikes. "Ouch! This little devil's got a bit of a poke to him though. Huh...Does this look swollen to you?" But Verai was gone! He'd already jumped into the water and surfaced a moment later with his own, snapping, catch! "Whoa! Look at the coloring on that guy!" Buzzster said. Roles reversed, he now helped Verai and his Litten back into the boat.
"I was trying to echolocate," Buzzster explained , once they were all back in the boat. "Bats use it for prey, dolphins use it to find fish. It just makes sense, right? You just do a little of this," he closed his eyes and did the clicking again, as if this were a brief tutorial for animals on YouTube. "And then you just stick your hand in and-" he plunged elbow-deep into the water and pulled out a [Bigness]eB9AxalI1d100 [Description]1d90 [Blarney]1d100. Buzzster blinked, and dropped his catch into the bottom of the boat before looking Verai dead in the face. "Not gonna lie to you here bud, I didn't expect it to be that easy."
Apparently the fishing system for the event was very forgiving.
