Redead found the Misty Timberlands pretty interesting. In his early life, he wasn't quite fascinated with spooky and macabre things. But his very close courting with death after the accident must've jostled something in his brain.
Because he found the morbid and unexplained tantalizing. He was no death seeker of course, but he did find the concept of death, undeath, and the afterlife interesting. And this forest, woods, whatever, had a particular feel to them that drew Redead to them.
So here he was, wandering about, like a lost soul in a deep, dark, forest.
What would they find?
"Mhmmm~ Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost~"

That damned black carriage.
Jade had half a heart attack when the thing stopped in the middle of the woods on its way to Briarbane Settlement. She'd known this whole Quest thing was too good to be true- free public transportation was always a trap. And there was no good reason why they'd stopped-- no announcement, no "we're sorry for the inconvenience." Nothing. Just axels creaking to a halt, joints creaking, and then silence.
Maybe it wasn't a good idea to bail in the deepest, scariest, most unknown part of the Timberlands. But hell, it beat waiting around to get murdered.
There was something on the road. Guess that's why the horses stopped, Jade thought, slinking forward to investigate. Her eyes darted uneasily back and forth.
Then the stench hit.
A huge, rotting carcass was blocking the path, seeping something dark into the well-trod dirt. Its bones shone dimly gray through the mist.
Air hissed out between the woman's teeth. "What in the hell..."
She heard a twig crack and turned, nostrils flaring. "Who's there?"

Though he was further off the beaten path - Redead had wandered onto an interesting sight. A black carriage, similar to the one he had ridden in when heading to the Misty Timberlands. It was currently stopped to a sudden halt.
The horses snorted agitatedly as the young poncho-wearing man blinked owlishly. The smell of rotting flesh assaulted his senses as he crinkled his nose in disgust. The mist was thick and oppressive yet using the minimap helped him find the other player who was apparently held up at the moment.
Peeking into the carriage window with a cheerful grin he spoke candidly. "Heyyyyy~! It looks like your ride is being held up! You may not wanna stay in there~!"

Her back stiffened for a moment as she fought not to yell in surprise, a spasm running down her spine. Then she relaxed.
Nobody that cheerful's any kind of game fixture. These woods were crawling with players like her, probably hunting wild Pokemon. @redead 's appearance had the immediate effect of reassuring her-- more people in a group, less likely they were to get attacked by wild animals. Pokemon. Whatever.
"Tell me about it," Jade said, swinging out of the carriage. Her eyes moved warily through the tall, dense trees. There was little visibility in the fog, leaving her unsatisfied. Eyes flicked back to the person who'd stopped to chat and she gave them a small, wry grin, thumbing back at the carriage. "Hope you weren't looking to hitchhike. Looks like it's not going anywhere soon."
The elephant in the room was the carcass. Huge, pale, and decaying to the point where whatever-the-hell it had been was a total mystery.
"Any ideas what this thing is?" Jade asked. She moved a little closer, eyeing the bones warily, but curiously.

Redead moved away from the carriage an amused expression on his pale features. As he watched the green-haired ninja jump out. She seemed a bit frank, and straight to the point. But not wholly uptight. He could work with her! "No clue! Maybe a pokemon? Or a human?" He thought aloud. "I'm more curious what could've killed it." He expressed moving towards the carcass as he poked the bit of bone sticking out. Not like it had germs or anything! It was just a game after all.

Well, there was only one way to answer that question.
Jade quirked an eyebrow. "You ever watch those crime shows? No chalk outline, but I'll wager there's clues."
She moved closer, holding her breath. The stench was really something-- it sent shivers clawing pinpricks through her body. It was times like these that reminded her how realistic this game was. It was one thing seeing pretty graphics and hearing the ground squish under her boots. This was something else.
Curiously, Jade didn't seem frightened as she squatted down to investigate the mass of bones and decaying gray flesh. "I figure whatever's did this is long gone by now. It's been dead for awhile," she said, pulling up her ninja mask (yeah, she had one) to help filter out some of the smell. She was surprised by how immediately effective it was-- wasn't that why real ninjas had them? To filter out poison gas and smoke bombs and shit?
"Poison..." she murmured out loud, looking back down at the creature.
The ground was sticky. Jade could see a trail of something black and ichorous leading off into the trees. If there was a source, it was out there.
She looked back at the other player, then did a double-take and really looked. "You some kinda Frankenstein?" Jade stood up, dusting off her knees. It wasn't in her nature to ask for someone else's name, much less provide her own, but her tone was not unfriendly. "I'm headed this way. You coming?"

Crime shows? Oh right, he watched some of those before, as Natalie of course. "I used to watch True Crime documentaries in college, but not anything like Law & Order. That was more of my parents' kinda thing." He explained before continuing. "But I get what you're saying."
Eyeing the black, sticky, ichor with a more critical eye - walked over towards it and stuck his finger in it. He didn't have to worry since it wasn't like he could get poisoned, right? "Yeah, this is most likely poison."
He stood up to his full height as his eyes shined with mischief and curiosity. "Hey! Do you think I'll White Out if I try tasting it?" He laughed, amusement lacing his tone.
"Just kidding! I'm not that foolish~" Looking at the trail that the culprit left behind his visage settled into a more relaxed expression. Though the hint of mirth in his eyes didn't wane. "I'm actually a zombie of sorts~ I'm Redead! Nice to meetcha Kuniochi lady!"
Watching her exclaim she was going to wander off in a random direction caused the young man to follow her lead. "If we're gonna wander aimlessly in the woods - we might as well bring out our pokemon! You never know what we could find~"
Stating that he threw out a Pokeball as a green lizard-like pokemon, a Snivy, appeared in a flash of light. And he didn't look happy. "IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU LET ME OUT!" It hollered as the silver-haired player simply stuck a finger in his ear staring at the small creature with an uninterested and unbothered gaze.
"Yeah, yeah~ Keep yakking you stupid lizard. I'll put you back in the Pokeball and chuck you into a ravine if you keep complaining!" "THERE'S NO RAVINES IN A FOREST, DUMBASS!" The two squabbled for a bit but despite their words, there was no heat behind them.
Remembering there was someone with them Redead spoke up. "Anyways, this is Gohma, one of my pokemon!" He presented it with a flourish. Before eyeing the greenette as though expecting her to show them her pokemon with equal fervor.

Despite her poser ninja avatar, Jenny didn't know shit about actual ninjas, real or fantasy. She'd just thought it would be funny to cosplay as one of the default pseudo-oriental JRPG options from the character creation screen.
"I think it's pronounced Konnichiwa," she said over her shoulder, pushing her way through thin, leafless lower branches. She did stop to grimace at the idea of tasting the crap. "Zombie. Gotcha. I'm Je...ade." Her name (Jade Jager ) appeared in a tooltip over her head, accompanied by the KINDLER icon.
The idea of sending out a Pokémon made her pause, then rub the back of her head. "You might be onto something there, Re-dead." Hell, she still hadn't gotten the hang of all this yet. She didn't need to be worried about fighting off bears or wolves or rabid raccoons-- she had friendly Pokemon friends to defend her.
Halfway through the trees she stopped, reaching for her belt to release her Torchic, Roger.
The little fire chicken appeared in a burst of light that made Jade hiss and shield her eyes. <Zzzz.> He was asleep, just like she'd left him.
Jade nudged him with her foot. "Arright, sleepyhead. Naptime's over."
A wisp of smoke escaped the corner of the bird's beak before he woke up, eyes opening. <You need my help? Already?>
"What do you mean already, I- anyway. Maybe. Sure. Something big and dead out here, and it's not just the zombie." She thumbed over her shoulder at @redead . "This here's my buddy Re-dead. plus Gohma."
<...I get the idea. I'll lead the way then,> said Roger, shaking out his feathers and setting off down the path. He seemed unfazed by the stench, surroundings, or new acquaintances. Eyebrows raised, Jade glanced at Redead and then followed.

Redead stifled a laugh, at his new traveling partner's mispronunciation of 'female ninja' but didn't bother to correct her. Instead, he smiled at the greenette's introduction. "Nice to meet you, Jade!" Ignoring the almost slip-up, that was probably their real name before they corrected themselves. Not that it bothered him. He'd keep a secret!
Sometimes he had a hard time keeping his identity as Redead separate from the woman they were in real life. It must be harder when both your in-game and realm identities were the same gender.
Jade let out her pokemon, a cute little Torchic that he was tempted to name "KFC" or "Fried Chicken" cause, well, it was a firebird! Though he felt the trainer nor the pokemon would appreciate the joke and thus kept it to himself.
"Someone's sleepy~" He cooed at the Torchic holding back from just hugging the little chick. Aaaaaaaaaa! It was so cute and probably fluffy and warm! Eeee!
The little posse continued down their decided path forward. The trees seemed impossibly tall and the mist felt imposing as they trekked deeper into the woodland. Perhaps getting closer to the culprit of the corpse!
What secrets would they find? Would there be a reward? perhaps this was a hidden quest? Redead couldn't help but find out! A sudden rustle however startled the silver-haired man out of his thoughts as he spoke up - though not above a loud whisper.
"Hey! Jade! Wait! Did you hear that?" He frowned before speaking up a bit louder. "I think something's around here..."

The cute, fluffy, and warm Torchic paced through the woods, following the viscous trail like a bloodhound.
Jade's head came up like a deer in the middle of grazing, instantly alert. "Yeah, I do," she said, eyes narrowed. It hit her like a punch to the gut how little she knew about this world, how little her instincts could actually serve her in a fantasy setting. Her mind leapt to bear, her body poised to climb a tree or play dead or whatever-the-hell-else the situation required. But who was saying any of that would work? Some eldritch horror might come out of the trees. Or a goddamn Abomasnow that she'd have to battle with her cute little Pokemon friends.
But how would she know where she stood until it happened?PROMPT: [Prompt]yr7zCbd_1d100 <There's some Tall Grass ahead,> Roger reported, making Jade jump and swear. The chick gave her a Look and turned to Goma instead. <She hasn't been in any Tall Grass yet. She's afraid of catching Pokemon.>
"I ain't afraid, it's just..." Jade grimaced, shooing the chick away. "Fine, whatever, if that's where the trail leads we'll go there. But you better be ready to fight off some Pokemon."
<That's what I'm here for,> said Roger.
Something wasn't right about this Tall Grass patch, though. The closer they got, the louder the sound that @redead had perceived through the trees. It seemed to be coming from the grass itself, humming and harmonizing through the air.
It sounded like music. Distant, eerie, underwater. Like hearing a movie soundtrack on the other side of a tunnel.
The grass in the middle of the patch was withered. The sound was strongest there. 1d100

"Should I poke it?" Inquired Redead as he stared at the withered patch of grass.
Gohma, his Snivy on the other hand, looked at it warily as it moved closer to the grass. <"Something about this feels... wrong."> The snivy looked up at its trainer with as much concern as a lizard/snake creature could. <"I can't quite explain it...">
Redead pondered the situation coming to the realization it just might be the way pokemon are programmed. To them, this... glitch in the matrix was something otherworldly... unknowable.
Something dangerous...
"Right then! Hey! Jade! How about you have your Torchic light it on fire?" The silver-haired man questioned with a grin. At least if something goes wrong it'll be too focused on being burned to react right away... Hopefully.

"Don't poke it," Jade yelped/hissed, a strangled sound like muffling a trumpet mid-note.
She couldn't explain why. She'd never encountered anything like this before, real world or game, but all her instincts screamed to keep her distance. Normal Tall Grass was spooky enough, knowing something was gonna jump out at you as soon as you rustled it. This was something else.
You didn't poke a sleeping bear. And you didn't poke whatever this was.
The underwater notes thrummed in her ears, sour and strange. "Fire... sure," Jade found herself saying, voice distant. Her eyes were still riveted to the blackened grasses. That sort of makes sense. Like burning noxious weeds. She pulled her mask farther up her nose just in case, wincing at the thought of inhaling those burning fumes, then gave Roger a small nod.
<Get ready...>
As soon as the Embers landed in the patch of grass, it began to writhe and shrivel. A hissing sound escaped it, like air leaving a balloon.
The music Jade could hear grew frenetic, as if the conductor of the underwater orchestra was the one who'd just realized his coattails were on fire. As the flames crawled to the top off the grasses, charring them to ash, the music seemed to swell, to heighten in pitch. It hurt her ears. Jade covered them, swaying on her feet, as it reached a crescendo.
The image of the grasses burning played before her eyes like a series of stills.
Then only a ring of decaying ground remained, smoking and sizzling, leaving a pool of water behind. It was perfectly round, and something rippled faintly from below.
"Guess this is the source," Jade said after a moment, eyes riveted to the now-quiet pool. A spring? Is this what that big animal had been drinking from?
