She quested North, through winding switchback trails and pillars of sharpened steel, eyes fixed on faraway places.
It got colder as she went. Even with her settings on reduced, she felt her legs grow leaden. The Steppes were temperate, the air charged with perpetual electricity and the ground dusty. Birds flocked in distant clouds overhead, outracing the storm.
"This is epic," Bergamot murmured, and forced herself to walk on.
She wished she had a Ride Pokemon. She'd been confused when the Saddle system first came out- previously in the Beta, there had been nothing in place to stop her from floating, flying, or being carried by any Pokemon she wished. Now, fully exploring the Steppes for the first time, she understood why.
She could go anywhere. Do anything. The only obstacle was time and distance.
And cold.
Perhaps it was just her imagination, but it felt colder as she pressed on. Towards the northern point of the map. Towards the strange, shadowy peaks on the horizon. Towards the Corruption Zone.

Baaaaaa!
Bleating caused her to look up. A flock of Mareep were gathered at the top of the hill, spread out in a dark, ruffled shadow along the crest of the hill. Their ball-shaped tails arched high, anticipating the coming storm. She could see blue-white static crackling in the air.
"Not today, Satan!" Bergamot cried cheerfully, shaking one fist at the walking petting zoo, and pressed further to the North.
She was looking for something.
Something strange. Something sinister. Something human-shaped and long as a shadow, but white as dirty laundry. Something that wiggled in the plains like a worm, and which drove you mad to look at.
Morgana had been reading too much Japanese Creepypasta recently. Nevertheless, it drove her onwards.

Half an hour later, Bergamot realized she was walking in circles.
I'm sure I've seen that spire before, she thought, frowning at the jagged spear of metal. There was a large dent in one side. Isn't that where Jack tackled the Magnemite? She'd been here before. In fact, she'd started her journey wandering in this direction.
Shaking out her shirtsleeves, Bergamot pulled up her map, narrowing her eyes. I should have been heading directly North. What happened? She hadn't been watching her minimap religiously, but she shouldn't have doubled back like that. Had there been a glitch?
I remember when we used to be able to report those. C0D13 would scan your noseprint and enact his most recently updated version of justice. One year later and Hydance were still trying to get away with calling bugs 'features' and denying any responsibility.
There was one easy way she could think of to keep her way: find a landmark. With an active flag on her minimap, she should have no difficulty telling which direction she was headed in.
The Giant Shrine should do.

Lightning flickered in the clouds above, illuminating the Steppes with pale, flickering light. The scenic vista looked like an old television screen from here, its picture stobing messily before resuming its normal broadcast of yellow grass, rolling hills, and daggerlike steel spires.
In the distance, one of those spires moved.
Morgana made fake binoculars with her hands to zoom in on the moving spire. "I do believe we have a Duraludon in our sights," she drawled to herself, putting on her airy southern debutante voice for the occasion. Jackpot. Professor Ash would pay big BYTES for one of those monstrosities, and Morgana herself had no particular interest in owning one (mostly due to the fact Sarah Lee already flaunted one).
But as it drew near, the girl in the blue dress realized she was in a predicament. What's strong against Steel? she thought. FIre, was the obvious answer, but unlike the aforementioned Sarah Lee, Bergamot was no Kindler. Well, she had briefly dabbled in it for the sake of spite and memery, but she really wasn't.
Just a moment. I do have a fire-type.
Eyes alight with pre-celebratory triumph, Bergamot threw out a Pokeball. "Go, my crony!"
Crony 2012 the male Salandit, materialized in the grass. He was squat, lizardy, and about a foot tall.
The Duraludon, on the other hand, was the size of an airstream camper. Particularly when it hit the ground on all four legs-- still well out of their range-- and began charging a beam attack.

With the Giant Shrine still crackling nearby, Bergamot had the utmost confidence in her chosen battler. Crony 2012 was a weak, slithering little skink more at home in a den of snakes than on the open plains, but even a male Salandit could win against a Duraludon in the right setting.
That setting was the Giant Shrine.
Morgana's easy landmark had unwittingly been turned into her advantage. As far as she knew, the shrine only healed players' Pokemon, not wild ones - though she'd seen wild Pokemon gathered around there at times. Perhaps they were just curious, or worshipping in their own way.
Either way, she had this in the bag.
As the beam attack hit Salandit, the Giant Shrine also flared, sending an opposite charge the other direction. Both forces crashed on Salandit, ringing the startled lizard Pokemon in blue and orange light as the two forces fought to equalize in its slithery little body.
<Gnehhh??!>
"Ohohoho! You'll have to do better than that!" Bergamot cried as the blue light won out. Static played across Salandit's body as its pupils dilated, body supercharged by the nearby Shrine's power. "Use..." She realized she had no clue what moves Salandit had. The usual 'bubblebeam' or 'water gun' she could generally rely on was unlikely here.
"Use Ember!"
Crony skittered forward, embers flying from his narrow snout. Bergamot wanted to cackle at her success, but restrained herself. She was trying to limit herself to just one cackle per minute.

"Hey miss! You need some help?"
Yggy Brooks- Warrior, Beginning Trainer, and Hoopster- waved enthusiastically as she came jogging over the far ridge. "Woah, that Duraludon looks wicked!"
She'd been hanging out in Professor Ash's campsite, hammering old tent poles and things, when she'd seen the lightning strike the Giant Shrine. That in itself wasn't that rare, but it seemed like some big battle was going on. Is it the World Event? Did I miss the notification? the blonde wondered, sprinting as fast as she could towards the flashes of light and roars. It oughta be any day now...
She was both disappointed (because it would have been awesome) and relieved (because she totally wasn't prepared, her skill trees were all messed up) to find a one-on-one solo battle happening instead. But man - what a battle!
"I saw you at the Round 2 party, right? I'm Yggy! It's short for Yggmalion. You know, the guy who carved his own wife?" Had she done that one before? It was getting hard to keep track.
Anyway: focus. They needed a ground-type or a fighting-type. "Randy, I choose you!" Yggy exclaimed, spirited, and threw out her Sandile.
<What?! I don't want to fight that!> squeaked the alligator, immediately burrowing into the ground.
"Aw it's okay Randy, it can't get you underground. Use Sand Tomb!"
Pinging sounds came off the Duraludon as a vortex of sand began to swirl around it, settling on its shiny back and shoulders. It roared furiously, struggling against the attack, and smashed one metal fist down on the ground. Hope Randy wasn't there... Yggy thought nervously, then turned back to Morgana. "So... what's up?"

"I don't know you at all," Bergamot declared boldly, tossing her hair. "But the hills know my name is Bergamot Gristleborg." She attempted to smirk, a ridiculous expression on anyone but especially Morgana, and ruined the moment further by staggering in place as Duraludon struck the ground with both warhammer hands. Ripples spread from the impact, causing the earth between her feet to shake and sway.
The Ember had barely done anything to the dragon's metallic hide. In hindsight, Bergamot supposed a few stray sparks wouldn't do much to a car, or a refrigerator, or anything else tough and insulated. It was probably more like grinding black pepper on someone who was mildly allergic. (This was just a hypothesis, as Chryssa had never encountered anyone who had this particular skin allergy.)
"Use Poison Gas!" Bergamot declared, forgetting the rules of Pokémon in favor of move variety. Crony 2012 knew better, but what kind of evil minion would he be if he didn't go along with whatever his master told him?
Flame licked around the reptile's thin snout, then guttered and sniffed out. With a squeaky wheeze, dark smoke poured out instead, billowing towards Duraludon. The steel-type swatted it away, annoyed.

"Haha- what does that mean, anyway?"
Yggy wanted to talk to the new girl really bad, especially since she was saying weird stuff, but there was a problem. Randy. The Sandile was still underground and definitely couldn't hear her, even if she yelled super loud, because Duraludon's roaring was so noisy.
"Randy, c'mon, come back!" Why'd he have to be so shy? Yggy knew the Giant Shrine must have healed him, so the Sandile ought to be at full health. Maybe Randy just wanted it to stay that way? Man, talk about not being a team player! How selfish do you get? She'd have to have a big Baseball Talk with Randy later, but right now it looked like she was gonna have to send out another Pokemon. Especially since it looked like Morgana didn't even know her Pokemon types.
"Geez, you can't use Poison Gas! It's a Steel-Type! They're immune," Yggy said, scratching the back of her head as the metal dragon tore right through the lame little cloud of toxic fumes. "It's okay though, I got you!"
Yggy tossed another Pokeball, sending out Nugget. The Pikachu looked around, sparks already crackling along his cheeks. There was no type advantage here, but Yggy had a different advantage: the advantage of surprise! "Let's do it! Gigantimax, Nugget!"
Oh yeah. Not supereffective? Not a problem. They had Pika-power on their side!

Morgana disguised her ineptitude by laughing triumphantly. "Ohohoho! You're starting to catch on," she said, tone dropping to a low, sinister murmur.
Actually, she'd just forgotten Salandit's ability (which usually allowed to to poison steel-types despite their immunity - corrosion? Something like that) didn't work on UNOVR, so she was simultaneously smarter than she looked and also dumber than she was pretending to be. "I've tricked you into assisting me in a hopeless battle, Yiggy Brooooooks." She pronounced it the way it was spelled.
Her eyes shone. "So what are you going to do?" The challenge was unmistakable. "Fight me? Fight the machine? You and your Pokemon are helpless in the face of my treachery." Actually, the blonde's ground-type Sandile unmistakably had the advantage here, but Morgana pretended that wasn't true. "Face it, foolish trainer. You've fallen right. Into. My. Trap."
<Ssssneee...>
"Use Poison Gas again, Crony 2012!" Bergamot raised her voice, deviant, defiant. "Hoho! I'll teach you to order me around."

"Uhh," said Yggy, uncertain. Maybe she would have been creeped out or something if the other girl hadn't just been totally knocked out seconds after delivering her big whammy line, but she had, so Yggy was kind of just confused. "...I guess you'll come back in a second." The Giant Shrine was already crackling, sending tendrils of healing energy out into the ground. "Anyway, c'mon, Nugget! Let's help that Salandit!"
<Gotcha! I'll get my growth on!>
Manish always did this part better than Yggy, but they had the whole shining giant Pokeball animation thing, then Yggy wound back her arm and delivered her best baseball pitch onto the field. The Gigantimax Pokeball made an arc of pure light as it flew towards the roaring Duraludon.
Then the Pikachu began to grow. Boom. Twice the size. Boom. Six times the size. Exponentially, incredibly, Nugget grew until it rivaled the Giant Shrine for size, his plump, chubby yellow body reminiscent of the first-gen PIkachu sprites.
"ELECTRO BALL!" Yggy called, both hands around her mouth. She saw one of the giant, black-tipped ears twitch as the behemoth registered her commands and took a step forward. The ground rumbled as electricity streamed through the air, collecting in a ball the size of the Duraludon's whole body. She saw its eyes widen, realizing the danger too late.
"Man, I can't believe we're gonna win this whole battle for that girl..." Was it too much to hope she'd be grateful, or at least think Yggy was cool?

Morgana rose to her feet like a reborn zombie, filled with the electric energy of the shrine. Her pupils dilated, her heart stuttered in her chest, and her lips drew back to show her teeth.
Her gaze swept the yellow grasses like lasers, leaving swathes of gray stone in its path. "Ha! Revived," she said smugly, then looked up.
She'd been afraid to see what had happened of the Duraludon, but she was even more surprised to see her view obstructed. Crimson clouds boiled and scudded overhead as she looked over the bulk of a Gigantimax Pikachu. Its back currently faced her, striped with brown and yellow like giant scars.
"Oh, boo," Bergamot uttered, cross. How was she supposed to top that? And she did remember that big Pikachu from the Round 2 party, now that she thought about it. Drunk as she had been at the time.
As the Electro Ball spun through the air, Bergamot dusted off her skirts and recalled her Salandit. She had a new crony now, and her name was Yggy Br00ks.

The Duraludon lay in a smoking heap on the ground. Yggy's Pikachu prodded it with a giant foot, making sure it was completely knocked out. The steel hissed and groaned, emitting steam from the patches in the dragon's armor.
"Oh man, I can't believe I beat it all by myself!" Yggy let out her breath, then seemed to remember Morgana. She looked over to see the woman in the blue dress had regained consciousness. "Hey, you're back!" Yggy grinned, stretching both arms behind her head. "I beat that Duraludon for you! Pretty cool, right? What do you think of my Pikachu?"
As she asked, the time expired on the Gigantimax and there were two puffs of crackling lightning as the Pikachu resumed his original size. "Thanks, Nugget!" Yggy recalled it. "He was one of my very first Pokémon! I keep trying to catch another one, but they're kinda hard to find now." Ever since the Pichu swarm last year ended, Yggy hadn't been able to find another one for anything.

Morgana ignored most of Yggy Br00ks's questions, zeroing in on one thing.
"Oh? What would you give for another Pikachu?" she asked, blue eyes tracking the tomboy like lasers. "I may have a Pichu in my possession. Crony, use Poison Gas, I need aesthetic."
<Hckss?!> said the Salandit, suddenly thrown out again. He was getting a lot of whiplash from Morgana today. Dubiously, he began to pump purple smoke from behind her, giving her an ominous miasma.
Now sufficiently threatening, Bergamot lowered her voice, basilisk gaze vacant. "What deal would you make, Yggy Br00ks? Would you sell your soul? A memory? A legendary egg?" She didn't really want a legendary egg, to tell the truth, she still needed to get rid of this Kyogre one she was carrying around. She had no time for babies. "Actually, scratch that. Do you want a Kyogre egg, too?" Might as well put all her eggs in one basket.

"Uhh, uhh, hold up." Yggy held up her hands, head spinning. "Did you say Kyogre?"
A volley of images seemed to fade in behind her eyes. Her field of vision should have been taken up by Morgana, by the Steppes, by the smoking Duraludon crumpled in a pile of twisted steel. So why could she see darkness, fading in like a veil over her eyes? Why could she see code, unspooling freely from her own body and the Pokemon dissolving in the water? Why could she hear voices fading, feel Raine's bodiless head in her arms, sense Watson disappearing—
A giant golden eye, opening. Pupil dilating.
"Yikes! Nope, nope, nope. You were in Beta, right? Kyogre's way too scary. I know some people have little ones, but it's not for me," Yggy objected plainly. Pixels raced up and down her form, distorting her to the naked eye. Then she gave a yelp. "Crap! Duraludon! Hurry, we have to catch it before it de-spawns." She fumbled out her golden Pokeball, pointing it at the big steel-type. "You're gonna catch it too, right? There's a pretty short window, so you better hurry."
The rush of adrenaline helped to clear her head. Before all the stuff about Kyogre, hadn't Morgana mentioned a Pikachu?
"I do super need a Pikachu. I could give you, uh..." She'd just traded half her Pokemon to Bethany on Beta Island for a Dunsparce. "Oh! I can trade you the Duraludon!" It seemed kinda sketchy since they were both copies of the same Pokemon (Hydance claimed this was an intended feature, but it smelled like a glitch to Yggy), but it should work. Right?
