"Holy shit."
She'd fucking done it.
Jade eyed the shaking Pokeball as it quivered three times, stopped, then was still. She waited a good thirty seconds longer than she needed to, counting down under her breath, then came out from behind the half-deleted tree where she'd taken cover.
Her UI was turned down as low as someone could get it, so there was no notification of capture successful! or details about the newest Pokemon she'd added to her dex. That was kind of a blessing. It was also a little bit eerie without that assurance, she had to treat this with caution. The last thing she wanted was to pick up something she thought was safe but was actually a grenade armed with a pissed-off housecat.
<Scaredy-cat,> said Roger, balancing on his egg. <Do you want me to do it?>
"Do what, pick it up? You don't even have hands. Nah, I got it."
...That's what she said, but boy, she took her sweet time about it. After circling around, Jade finally swooped in and picked up the Pokeball. It felt heavier than when she'd thrown it.
It shrunk in her hand until it was manageable size. Mystified, Jade put it in her pocket. That easy. Like pocketing spare change.
"Think I hit gold with the Pokemon trap concept," she said, looking her 'art piece' mannequin lure up and down.
<Not necessarily. I think that Sprigatito just likes people,> pointed out the Torchic.
Jade nodded vigorously. "Well, that's what we're going for. Sure as hell don't want Pokemon that don't like people. That's just asking for trouble."

Wellp, it'd been thirty minutes and no more wild Pokemon, so it looked like this 'better mousetrap' was a bust.
Or maybe it was just too obvious.
She'd started out trying to make the dummy look like a real trainer. The way she figured, Pokemon attacked people who went into the Tall Grass, right? Then making a mannequin-type thing and sticking it out in the grass was like a reverse-scarecrow.
In real life, animals were by and large scared of people. Sure, they were dangerous, but given a choice, even large predators and snakes would rather avoid you than take you on head-to-head. Pokemon were different. That's why they scared her. They were too much like people-- they'd pick a fight for any reason. At the same time, they might be reasoned out of it.
"I'm gonna paint it camo," Jade suddenly decided out loud.
"Zzz," said Roger, who had fallen asleep.
...Well, whatever. That was fine. Here was her new logic: she'd done a pretty good job making something that looked pretty human, from a distance. The problem was, when Pokemon started getting closer, they had too much time to realize the thing was still and unmoving and generally just fake. She needed to hit a balance where the Pokemon didn't see the mannequin clearly til they were too close to avoid being caught.
Jade hauled out the set of paints she'd borrowed from Mom's House. They weren't much better than those little starter set watercolors you used in grade school, but it was better in nothing. Man, what she wouldn't give for a set of those magic face paints from the Mime Circus. Can't believe I'm saying that...

Jade almost screamed at the sight of the ferocious Chimchar. She dropped her shitty watercolor palette, backing up with both hands raised like she was trying to prove she wasn't armed.
"Roger..." she tried to say out of the corner of her mouth. "Wake up..."
<Mmm...>
"Roger!"
<Who's Roger?> asked the Chimchar, dropping down from the vine above. Jade was surprised to hear the voice was female. <What are you doing here?>
Jade knew she'd just been saying that Pokemon could be reasoned with, but hell, she suddenly didn't feel so reasonable. She sure wanted to run for the hills. You ever see a chimp rip off your arms? No, you sure as hell didn't, because nobody would film that shit. But they could. She was more scared of monkeys than she was of bears.
"Roger, he's just... see... go, Sprigatito!" Jade chucked the Pokeball of the cat she'd just caught. The grass-type reappeared, scratching at one ear and blinking placidly. "Hell... attack!"

<Oh, I don't know,> said the cat, rubbing a paw over its face. <That's a fire-type and boy, I'd hate to lose.>
"Look, Sprigatito..."
<Pete,> said Roger, waking up. <Call him Pete.>
"Fine, Pete-- y'know, you got a point." Fire and grass weren't gonna go so well together. "Roger, you go. Drive that ape off before it rips my arms off."
The Chimchar looked alarmed. <Hold up, who said anything about arm-ripping? I just wanted to see who was out here.>

What the hell was a Chimchar doing in the Canopy anyway? Shouldn't they be up on the volcano with the rest of the fire-breathing little monsters? Sure, it made plenty of sense for a monkey to be in the jungle, but it'd caught Jenny off guard. It was like running into a Polar Bear in the Antarctic- sure, you could see it, but you'd never expect to find one there.
Jade looked up to see Roger faithfully squaring off against the monkey, who let out a little whoop of excitement. <Woo! You're really serious about this, huh?>
"Roger, get that thing out of here already!"
<She's not a thing, she's a Pokemon. And isn't this what you wanted? You were looking for friendly faces.>
Jade wanted to pull out her hair. "Sure, but..." she trailed off.
Pete the Sprigatito finished cleaning his whiskers and took a long stretch. <I decided to fight after all,> he said softly, "This Chimchar doesn't seem so hard." He waved his tail from side to side, drawing the Chimchar's eyes. <That's it... back and forth... back and forth...>

"What're you..."
Belatedly, Jade shut her mouth as she recognized the move as a Tail Whip attack. Sprigatito was battling. Seeming to sense that, Roger backed off, returning to the egg. "Looks like it's hatching," the Torchic reported.
"Mhm," Jade said, watching Sprigatito's cute puffy tail wave back and forth, back and forth. Chimchar seemed equally fascinated. What was it about that tail? Was it like a pendulum? Or was it just cute?
Roger's words reached her a couple seconds later and Jade's head whipped around. "Hang on, what did you say?"
The egg was hatching. Having a warm chicken sitting on it all day for a couple days had apparently thawed it out, even though she'd found it in the middle of a snowbank. Cracks were spreading across its shell from the top down.
<Ooh, that's a fire-type egg,> said the Chimchar, distracted by the hatching egg as much as Jade was. <I haven't seen one in awhile. Where did you get it? I want one!>
"Well, you better learn to ski then," Jade said, reflecting on the damn ski hill she'd had to navigate just to find the little beauty. But the hatching was slowing- it seemed like whatever was inside didn't have the energy to finish breaking out of the shell. "You wait right there, something's wrong. I'm gonna run to the shrine, get this thing healed up."
She looked around. "There's one around here, right?"
"I know where it is," said Pete the Sprigatito, blinking owlishly. Unexpectedly, the Chimchar also waved her hand. <Hey, hey! I do too! I'll show you. I can be like, your tour guide.>
Jade let out her breath, picking up the egg. "Well, get on with it then!"

They stood at the High Tide Shrine as the egg hatched.
There was no flash of light, no rush of power, no healing energy. Perhaps it was just the calm. Perhaps it was just the passage of time. Whatever it was, the shell fell away in shards of stone and soot, and a four-legged Pokemon fell out.
Like a rock.
"Ow!" It fell on her foot and Jade let out a yell. "What the hell?"
<Oh, you shouldn't drop the baby,> said Pete, who had decided to jump down on his own. Good thing, or he would have been dropped too. The cat crept forward to sniff at the creature which had hatched, giving it an experimental lick on the head. <It's a puppy.>
<It's a Growlithe!> Chimchar said excitedly. <A special one!>
Limping, Jade took a few paces back to get a good look at it. She'd been scared the egg would hatch into something scary, so it was a relief to see it was a dog. But what kind of dog was that? As she looked at it, it slowly dawned on her. "Oh. I get it." She closed her eyes, summoning images of iconography from around oriental grocery stores and the one Buddhist temple in Houston her parents had dragged her to every New Year. "It's one of those lion-dogs. The fu-dogs. Statues. Things."
Well, that was a two-pronged sword. On one hand, it reminded Jenny of a whole host of cultural divides, disappointed expectations, and unhappy holidays. On the other hand, it was hard to be scared of one of the friendly temple guardians, especially a baby one. She'd always thought they were cute when she was younger.
"I guess I gotta name it. Damn, Roger isn't here." Roger had named all her Pokemon so far.
<Oh, oh, I'll name it! How about Goose?> Chimchar asked brightly, dancing on the spot. Jade pointed at it accusingly. "You're not even on the team!"

A kerfuffle followed. Things were said, like "You're not even on the team" and "Who put you in charge?" and "Where's Roger?" At the end of the day, Jade was left with:
One Sprigatito (unchanged) One Chimchar (named Goose, which she confessed was what she'd always secretly hoped someone would name her) One Hisuian Growlithe (named Daniil by Roger, who'd finally shown back up.)
Roger was sitting on Daniil's head, which the dog apparently had no problem with. Guess he got used to it after being an egg for so long. That was good- she knew Roger would have missed his warm snoozing spot.
What the hell am I saying? She didn't care about these things. She was just hanging out in this world killing time while she waited for the AC to get repaired and for her life to turn itself around.
Aw, but who was she kidding? Lives didn't turn themselves around, and she'd already gone all winter without needing climate control. She might as well commit to the bit. Hell, Jade looked around and realized she'd been the only one who'd ever been fooled into anything different.
"Goose, you're on the team."
<Yay!>
"Roger, I know you're naming everyone after famous tennis players."
<Zzzz.>
"Fine. And Daniil, you're gonna watch over us, y'hear? God knows this group needs it."
<BAOOOOOOOW!> bayed the Growlithe happily at a volume that damn near broke Jade's eardrums. "Jesus christ!" the green-haired ninja swore. Well, she might not have a better mousetrap, but at least now she had a better... something. Better team? Better fire-type? Hell, she didn't know if any of that was true, but things were looking up.
Until she threw her Pokeball, anyway.
<What's up?> Goose asked, climbing up to her elbow to look at the Pokeball. <Why isn't it working?>
Jade looked at the Pokeball, dumbfounded. When she'd tried to catch the monkey, the ball had just acted like an ordinary piece of plastic. "This one a dud or something?"
She looked closer. There was a small, LED readout on the front. It said 'Out of BYTES.'
"...You gotta pay to catch Pokemon in this game?!"

That was the story of how Jade carted a half-wild Chimchar around with her on Beta Island for a good two hours while she hustled up every NPC with a side quest she could find. She did things she'd never heard of. Hell, she did things she didn't know you could do.
She talked to fishermen and helped them resolve their wifely disputes.
She helped Beta Bethany brush out her Stoutland's mustache.
She even made a dowsing rod out of some old sticks and used it to sniff out some old change.
But at the end of the day, she was a rich (rich?) pseudo-ninja, and she damn well better catch her Chimchar. She'd earned it.
