âWeâre going fishing.â
<Again? Okay! I love fish!>
âWhatever fish we get that is useless goes to him.â
<I didnât know Pansear liked fish! Catching it is really fun, you know, Pansear?>
âAnd then heâll cook it.â
<Ahaha, what.>
Sprigatito stares as Pansear climbs up on the nice rock he had picked out, gesturing for their newest member, a Mudbray, to park herself close. The mule slowly trotted over, letting Pansear rummage through a pack slung over her back to pull out a knife and a whetstone.
Pansear begins to sharpen the knife with great relish.
<What!> Sprigatito jumps to his feet, running over to his trainer. Kazuki is already sitting by the waterside, one leg propped up and the other dangling over the water as he prepares the fishing rod he purchased.
âWhat is it this time?â He raises a brow at the feline chewing his arm. âYou canât fish, cat. If you want to help, just wait until I reel something in.â

âFor fuck’s sake,â Kazuki hisses, âWho let it out!â
Tinnitus escapes. It floats there, buzzing loudly into his ear, emitting that same magnetic wave that screwed with his audio.
Pansear blinks, before hastily stuffing a Pokeball back into Mudbray’s pack.
The mule rolls her eyes at him, before turning her attention back up to the Magnemite. She’s heard of how it was captured from Sprigatito and Pansear. <If you want to torment him… wouldn’t you prefer to stick around?> She asks in a slow drawl.
The Magnemite buzzes, single eyeball moving from the mule to the trainer it’s revving to electrocute. Weighing between quantity and quality, it slowly dials its volume down.
Kazuki feels his headache alleviate a bit, at least enough for him to notice a bite on the line.

The fish he pulls up is a white magikarp with a large orange dot between its eyes. It flops, blubbing and flailing as it clings to his hook.
“Almost like koi,” he hums. “Not quite right, though.”
He turns, flinging the line and the fish on the end of it toward his awaiting party. “Have at it!”
Pansear acts quickly, shooting at it with a violent plume of fire, intending for a rather showy cooking debut.
Sprigatito, who up until now had never realized that the fish he ate had to be processed for him to eat, looks on in horror. He quickly musters a Magical Leaf, intercepting the flames and throwing the magikarp back into the water.
Pansear tenses. He slowly turns to look at Sprigatito, who yelps at the terrifying look on the otherwise cute monkey’s face.
You will rue this, it seemed to say.
Kazuki snorts at the brewing rivalry and proceeds to bait his next line.

But it returns; apparently a fish fueled by spite and who did not appreciated getting smacked with sharp flying leaves.
And it slaps him in the face.
Kazuki sputters, trying to get the fish to stop flailing on his line. “Are you—” he clicks his tongue, before tossing it again, this time straight at Sprigatito. “Stop fumbling there and kill it!”
Sprigatito yelps, before lobbing another Magical Leaf at the incoming fish.

<I’m a monster.> Sprigatito wails, face in his paws as Mudbray gently drags her tongue over his head, turning the tuft of fur on top into a cowlick. The magikarp had been sliced n’ diced perfectly by his leaves—which should feel like an accomplishment, were it not for the crippling guilt.
Pansear sighs, holding his fresh ingredient in his paws. What a baby! He grumbles soundlessly as he takes the fish to his makeshift kitchen-rock, using his new knife and the water nearby to gut and clean it. Sprigatito is a feline pokemon; he should be used to killing fish—plus, those tears are ruining his appetite!
Now Pansear would have to hold off on cooking it. He’d have to use up their salt, dry it, smoke it, and pack it tight until Sprigatito will let him cook the rest of it and make him see the light.
Kazuki, meanwhile, watches his team’s dynamic with mild interest. He’s drawing up his next line. “Guess it’s you and me,” he says, glaring at the Magnemite floating beside him.
Tinnitus glares back.

When the next bite comes, the magikarp is less impressive. He does like the striping on it, but the brown gives it the appearance of halibut.
“Alright, just—”
A sharp bolt comes crashing by his feet, narrowly dodged. Kazuki curses, having expected this, though making him assume it would play along by waiting is an impressive jerk move on Tinnitus' part.
“That all you got?” He taunts, bringing in another Spark, this one he uses to fry the magikarp on his line.

The magikarp becomes a sponge.
When Kazuki tosses the fish over to Pansear, the monkey’s less than enthused. This cut’s been overcooked. He settles with cutting off the charred bits and trying to even out the cooking. Maybe he can mask the taste and smell with touga berries. A lot of touga berries.
The sparks don’t cease, however. Kazuki continues dodging Tinnitus’ ritual zaps, following a hybrid between breakdancing and highland dancing as he keeps his legs moving while his upper half prepares his fishing rod for his next cast.
“Aren’t you getting bored of this?” The trainer hisses.
Tinnitus doesn’t respond, but zaps with enthusiasm as if to say ‘Dance for me, clown!’
Kazuki somehow manages to toss his hook into the water as he runs.

The next magikarp he fishes out is fairly similar to the last—or he thinks it is, in the brief span of time he has to look at it before it’s blitzed into oblivion. The fish is engulfed in electricity, its scales charring as it flails wildly on the end of his fishing line. The sparks nearly reach his hands.
This one Pansear won’t even try to catch. He signals his disapproval with two thumbs down, knowing damn well even if it survives, no amount of spicy sauce will save that thing.
Tinnitus squints, displeased at having missed the human once again. It begins charging up for another.

The magikarp clings to life by a half. It makes a break for it, managing to unhook itself and soaring beautifully across the sky.
Kazuki plugs his ears briefly as Tinnitus unleashes an outraged screech at the fish smacking hard against its chassis.
For the first time, the magnemite switches targets, its wrath now directed at the magikarp making a valiant escape towards the water by flopping over the ground.

By the end of it, Kazuki finds himself nudging a charred magikarp into the water, not knowing if the thing was even alive. The water’s surface doesn’t stir, nor can he make out a shadow.
Tinnitus isn’t present. After it had fried its target to a crisp, Sprigatito had tagged in (or rather, flew into a frenzy) and Kazuki could return the homicidal cyclopes and substitute the cat in.
“It’s fine,” he says, preparing as Sprigatito worriedly pokes the water with his paw. “It’s uh,” he snorts, “swimming with the fishies now.”
He sends out his hook and waits for the next fish.

The next one that surfaces is covered in orange splotches—very koi-like. He pulls it up, calling for Pansear’s attention. Pansear squints from where he has resumed honing his tools, rubbing his chin for a moment. He flashes a thumbs up.
Kazuki looks down to where Sprigatito stares at him. “You know, if you don’t knock it out, it’s just going to spring back up and die.”
The cat’s face puffs up. He shoots Kazuki and Pansear both a look. He knows that. He was there!
Kazuki, shrugging, tosses the fish to Sprigatito as if he were a seal accepting a treat with a flourish.
Sprigatito makes a valiant effort to pelt the fish with leaves.

And misses.
The magikarp ends up landing squarely on Sprigatito’s face, the cat screeching loud as he begins flailing and running around in circles. The magikarp somehow continues to balance itself on his head, using the momentum to slap the top of his skull repeatedly.
The rest of the team look on in various states of impatient, unimpressed, or mildly perturbed at the feat accomplished.
Unable to paw the thing off his face, Sprigatito summons more floating leaves.

The leaves send the fish flying onto the ground. It flops there in all its splotched glory, blubbing nonsense.
Sprigatito’s face is soaked. It’s also a little red, flushed from the embarrassment that overcomes him when he sees how his teammates stare. Mudbray looks at least mildly supportive, nodding for him to continue. Pansear is blatant in his disappointment. He doesn’t try to look at his trainer, trying to spare himself from the killing blow to his ego.
“Come on,” he hears Kazuki say, the words laced with amusement. “One more hit, cat.”
He puffs up his face as the fish flops closer to the water’s edge, scurrying over to bite its fins.

A slap fight begins between Sprigatito and the flailing magikarp, the fish surprisingly resilient. Once he got it clamped between his jaws, it begins thrashing violently, smacking him with its fins, spraying his face with spurts of water. It appears to be drying out from the sun.
<Jssh grr trr slrrp, mssur f’sh!> Sprigatito struggles, already rolling around on the grass.
Mudbray fidgets where she sits. On one hand, getting up is a lot of effort—on the other, she’s not sure how well Sprigatito is faring. <He looks like he could use some help…>
Pansear shakes his head and motions for her to stay seated.

After a few more minutes, Sprigatito stands victorious over the limp fish, his chest puffed out and taking great efforts to look proud of himself and not grossed out by the sensation of a squishy fish under his paws.
Mudbray gently clomps her hooves on the ground alongside Pansear, who claps politely.
“Send it off,” Kazuki orders monotonously, tossing his line into the water.
Nodding somberly, Sprigatito pushes the fish into the water with all the respect of a Viking funeral, watching as it disappears into the waves. So long, my enemy.
