 QUEST LINE 0: CHECK IN THE BACK
A few minutes walk from the docks to Beta Island is a canvas-walled laboratory. A small metal plaque is affixed to the entrance which says "Professor Ash - Temporary Research Location. HELP WANTED!"
Inside, Professor Ash is waiting for you, as much as a terminal workaholic ever 'waits' for anything. "A trainer. How timely," she says, approaching you with long, brisk strides. She inspects you and, with no room to be picky, nods her acceptance. "You're lucky, in a way. We only have a few Pokemon left, so you are spared the agony of choice."
She unlocks a deep, metal filing cabinet and opens one of the drawers with a satisfying CLUNK. "This is what's left. We're desperately understocked, but you can blame my assistant Bunya for that."
Professor Ash gestures to the sparse innards. You count twenty-four slots where Pokeballs would ordinarily fit, but only one still has anything in it. She reaches in and picks it out for you. On the front is a piece of white tape with the name of the Pokemon written on in precise, angular letters.

"Oh, snap!"Blonde-haired, blue-eyed, and much more handsome than his typical acne-ridden teenage self could pull off, Yggy Brooks arrived in the Starter Lab with effortless grace. He literally spawned out of midair, landing neatly on his bare feet as easily as a panther. Bare feet? Why? was his first thought, then, Woah! It's cold!
It was cold. The temporary flooring of the makeshift Pokemon Lab felt cool underfoot, like his kitchen linoleum in the morning. Kenny— or Yggy, as he would now be known— had played plenty of Pokemon, but this was his first foray into VR. His little sister was spending the night at a friend's house, so he actually had the peace and quiet available to do a Deep Dive with the Nintendo WorldScreen his dad had won for him in a raffle last summer. Thinking about his dad made his stomach clench uncomfortably. Yggy brushed it off, turning instead to the silver-haired woman who'd just spoken to him. "Oh, snap!" he said again, doing a double-take. "You look like one of my teachers, ma'am. Are you like, a real doctor too? I've been wondering if the professors just all have doctorates, or if they actually do medical stuff like a vet."He gave a bright, hyper smile. "I'm YGGY! It's short for Yggifer. Oh, that must be my Pokemon!" He grabbed for the Pokeball just as another player spawned into the lobby behind him, hastening his choice. "Yowza! This one's mine!"

With a quick flash of light, a tall, put together, significantly nicer version of Manish spawned out of air and landed gently on his bare feet before promptly falling over. From his position on the ground Manish took a look around. It appeared that he was in some sort of lab which he found to be rather boring. But after twisting his neck to get a larger view, two people came into view, a teen boy and what appeared to be someone in a lab coat. People… ”People!” Manish let out before swinging his limbs around to right himself and standing up. “You’re people!” Manish pointed a bony finger directly into the face of the teen before remembering the few social norms he learned from tv, mainly that pointing was rude. He slammed his arms back down to his sides, cleared his throat, fixed his tie, and did his best impression of someone who had in fact talked to strangers before. “Hello, I am Manish. Yes, that Manish. I know, this must be very exciting for you to meet me and this is a very normal occurrence for me to meet people.”It was then that Manish noticed the small red and white ball in the teen's hand. “What’s that?” followed quickly by him seeing more in a drawer and picking up one of the others “what’s this? Can I have this?” |

"Oh heck yeah, Oshawott!" Yggy said, managing to read the label on the ball. He pocketed it without sending it out, distracted by the opportunity to make new friends with whoever else had just shown up. Some people would say that "making new friends" was the entire point of assembling a team of Pokemon, but it was hard to form a connection with something that looked like a baseball. Just makes you wanna pitch it, you know?
"What happened to that other guy?"...The other guy hadn't made as smooth of a landing. "Hey there, you okay?" Yggy piped up, concerned. He grinned suddenly. "Yeah, man, I am! It's totally cool, don't worry about the spill. It takes some time to get used to your character, right?" He was glad he'd made a character about his own size— he'd been tempted to make someone hilariously tall or tiny, but he'd been worried about... falling down and stuff. Like in that movie Seventeen Again. He was pretty sure Zac Efron had fallen down when he'd turned out to be a 30-year-old dude. But maybe that was just the shock of being a 30-year-old dude? Time would tell. "I bet you're actually tall in real life! Or short," he added, growing mischievous. "Or you're a paraplegic and can't move at all. Sorry, is that offensive? I just mean, if you can't move your arms and legs over there, it'd be really hard in here. Or would that even work?"He peered over Manish's shoulder at the filing cabinet, where another Pokeball had magically appeared. "Shoot, go figure! Yeah, you can have it! It's your first Pokemon, after all. Right, ma'am?" He looked earnestly over at Professor Ash. "...Or did you want to tell him he could? Sorry, I wasn't trying to step on your toes or anything. Um, Professor.""—Take it!" he whispered, lowering his voice.

Manish knew that it was totally normal to fall down on occasion, the kid confirmed it. He wasn’t totally sure what he was talking about with the whole ‘character’ thing, Manish just looked like himself. Well, ok, maybe he made some changes to his hair. But that was only because Mother demanded he let his luxurious hair grow out and he was curious what it would look like shorter! It’s not like she would know anyway. He hoped. Manish blankly nodded along with the ramblings, he was going in and out of the conversation but knew that at least 80% of listening was smiling and nodding. He did shoot a quick glance over at the professor, who appeared to already have toned them out. Taking the advice he gripped the ball tighter and hid it behind his back. He doesn’t know what it is, but he does know that he really wants it. “Well, now that we have these uh, balls we should probably get outta here and do, some very important things” Manish said while backing away and gesturing to the kid to follow him. He really didn’t know what was going on, but he would rather not get in trouble by with the labcoat. Better to get out now before she started asking questions he didn’t have the answers to. But fortunately for Manish, here was a whole actual real person who could tell him what he was supposed to be doing. “I have a question. I mean, I totally know the answer, of course, but let’s just uh, say for a second that I didn’t know the answer. Again, I definitely do, but what’s a pokemon? Also what are we doing here? And where do we go from here? The pokemon is in the ball? How did it get in there?” Manish dumped all in one breath. |

A great silence fell after Manish's rush of questions. Yggy sucked in his breath, eyes wide. "Oh, man..."To Yggy's credit, he recovered immediately. He didn't want to embarrass the new guy, and since Professor Ash seemed preoccupied with something at her desk, it seemed like the perfect time to fill Manish in. "Okay, okay, I got this. Yeah, it's a Pokemon! You know, a Pocket Monster? Like a cool monster pet? It's inside the ball right now, like a little house. That's how it works in the manga, anyway." He fished out his Oshawott's Pokeball to show Manish, then paused as he remembered something. "Oh wait, which one did you get? Did you see the name? Yeah, you should let it out!" Yggy's focus was immediately broken as he strained to see the label on Manish's ball, which the man was hiding behind his back for some reason. "C'mon, I wanna see! I don't think she minds," he added, jerking his thumb at the NPC. The silver-haired woman glanced up with a raised eyebrow, but didn't comment. "Oops, she heard me! Crap..."Returning to the first topic, Yggy held out his own Pokeball again, grinning bashfully. "Look, I'll show you how, okay? Watch super carefully." Maneuvering his thumb over the button, Yggy jammed it down with lightning-fast accuracy and precision, like a trained whack-a-mole speedrunner. Pressing the button in the middle would release it, right? There wasn't some special UI command? To Yggy's relief, the ball burst open at the intuitive gesture and the Oshawott materialized on the ground. Its blue ears flicked, startlingly lifelike, and it closed its eyes, rubbing over its whiskers with both paws. "...Oh my god, it's so cute," Yggy stressed. It blinked up at him, nose quivering. <Howdy!> it said. "Oh yeah, and they talk!" |

‘A cool little monster pet…’ Ok, Manish vaguely remembers reading something about that when he purchased the game. Pets that you could use for fighting. Manish was fairly certain that Mother ran a charity organization that was against using animals for fighting, but also this was in a game, so it was probably alright. He did make a mental note to not mention that specific aspect of the game to her though, just in case. Manish brought the ball out from behind his back and squinted at the label upon Yggy’s suggestion. “Bulbasaur” he said mainly to himself before his attention was brought back to Yggy. He needed to make sure he paid attention this time. “Woaaaaaaaah” Manish said at the appearance of the ‘Pocket Monster.’ “That’s so…cool! Are you seeing this?” he gestured at Yggy, who very clearly was seeing this. “And it talks! It’s so cute! Are they all this cute? I bet mine’s cute. Afterall, it’s mine.” Not wasting any more time Manish copied the movements he watched from Yggy and used both hands to press down on the little button the ball. Another flash of light and a Bulbasaur appeared next to Oshawott. It blinked it’s eyes, but they were off timed with each other as it stretched out it’s mouth in a large yawn. It gave a smile to Manish, who stared down at it with a slight frown. “It’s a toad,” Manish said, frown deepening. “Well that’s slightly hurtful,” replied the Bulbasaur. Manish squatted down and began poking at the Bulbasaur’s face and bulb, who seemed to tolerate the touch with mild confusion. “Slimey,” Manish muttered before looking back up at Yggy. “What do we do with them now?” He faltered slightly, “I mean, I definitely totally know. But uh, what uh, what are you doing to go do with yours? So I can compare that with what I absolutely have planned with mine. Yeah, that makes sense.” At this point the face poking turned into Manish gently scratching behind the Bulbasaur’s ear causing him to start twitching a back leg. |

Yggy perked his ears. "Oh, Bulbasaur, huh? They're pretty cool!" he said, providing his own ever-so-helpful opinion as Manish released the "toad" onto the ground next to Oshawott. Yggy covered his mouth, trying not to laugh at the man's observation. "Is it seriously slimy? Oh man, these textural details are great."He scooped up his Oshawott, putting his hands below the creature's armpits like he was picking up his little sister. <Woooh!> the water-type hooted, stretching out his arms and legs in surprise. <Great view up here, I'll tell ya!>"Aww, he's so nice! I'm gonna call him Watson," Yggy exclaimed. The Pokemon's fur felt thick and waxy, more like the pelt of a sea creature than a stuffed animal. It made him like it even more. "Because he's an Osha-wat, you know? What're you gonna name yours?"There was another reason he'd named it Watson. Yggy loved detective movies. And here in UNOVR, with his dad somewhere out there waiting for him, Yggy was the only private eye on the virtual block. The sound of someone— Professor Ash— clearing her throat caught his attention. "Oh, shoot, we should probably go soon, right ma'am? More people might spawn in. Hey, but y'know, Manish..." Yggy lowered Watson, seeming earnest again, "If you want to keep hanging out, we can like, explore together! I just started playing, so it'd be pretty fun to have a starting buddy." He grinned bashfully, and little embers seemed to rise from the ends of his hair. |

Manish found himself smiling at the teen as he picked up his Oshawott. There was a fuzzy feeling in his chest and while he would normally chalk that up to heartburn he couldn’t help but think that this is what he had been missing locked up in his parent’s estate. Another person to talk to; what a novel concept. Manish cleared his throat to shake off the thoughts and scooped up his Bulbasaur. “Watson, huh? That’s a good name.”He turned the Bulbasaur to look into his face “What to name you…hmmm. I think I’ll call you Ryan. My dad once worked with a Ryan. The guy was funny, wore a weird red bodysuit. It was a whole thing.” The newly named Ryan gave a lick to Manish’s cheek who only grimaced in response. The warm chest feeling was back when Yggy suggested staying together for a little while longer. This was the perfect chance for Manish to figure out what he was supposed to do without having to actually ask around about it. “That’s a great idea!” Manish coughed to stop himself from gushing too much, he didn’t want to come off as desperate (even though he was) “I mean, I suppose or whatever. It’s, ya know, chill.” He hefted Ryan around in his arms to get a better grip on the toad that kept threatening to slip out of his arms. “Thanks, uh, lady? Yeah, thanks for these little dudes. Bye!” He called to the professor before walking over to the door and holding it open for Yggy. “Let’s blow this popsicle stand.” |

Professor Ash watches you take the Pokeball. She nods once in approval. "Congratulations, Yggy Br00ks and manish . You are now— officially— Pokemon Trainers. Your UI should now be fully activated, and you now have the ability to catch wild Pokemon. You will also be approached by people asking for your assistance, so allow me to be the first. My assistant Bunya is on Beta Island right now catching starter Pokemon for all the new trainers we're expecting." Professor Ash tilts her arm, checking the time on a thin wristwatch. "She ought to have a shipment ready. Please go and collect it for me."
Professor Ash hands you BOTH a commuter pass for the Beta Ferry!
"This will let you travel back and forth as much as you like. Bunya's 'lab' should be set up right on the docks, right next to the fisherman I imagine," she says with a light, weary sigh. You notice a slight tug at the corner of her mouth, pulling her polite smile into a crooked grimace. "Remember to also stop by your house and say goodbye to your Mother. I'm sure she will miss you two greatly, even if you are only gone for the afternoon."
