{TUTORIAL: PUMPED-UP KICKS}You're about to leave on your Pokemon Journey—but you have no goddamn shoes! Unless you want to run through the tall grass barefoot for the rest of the game, return to MOM'S HOUSE (marked on your minimap in the starting town) and say goodbye to the woman who's raised you all your life!
MOM likes to tell long, convoluted stories about what it was like raising you as a single parent and seems to offer new, alarming details about what happened to your father every time. She will only give the players the RUNNING SHOES when they have completed learning their in-game backstory. YGGY BROOKS was not the kind of person to leave home without saying goodbye to his mother. He didn't even get on the internet without telling his mother in real-life. He texted her six, no, ten, no, fourteen times a day. Even if this was just a Game Mom with some generic Game Face and Game Dialogue, he was definitely definitely going to check in before he jumped on the boat to Beta Island. "My House," the teen muttered to himself, checking between the minimap and the view in front of him. The ragtag cluster of buildings only had one real, house-shaped structure apart from the Pokemon Lab. That had to be it, right? It didn't feel like his house. That was Yggy's first thought upon ringing the doorbell like a glorified Boy Scout selling magazine subscriptions. Kenny lived in a two-bedroom apartment and shared a room with his little sister (she'd promised not to bug him while he was gaming). This felt like someone else's house. Someone he was already hype to meet. He rang the doorbell again cheerfully, utterly fearless.

"I think you mean our home," said Big Bee, whose mini-map had lead him to the same house. It seemed that in the whole of UNOVR there was only one starting house, and a single, communal Mom. Bryan had grown up in a house of five, very active kids, who had worn his parents down to barely functioning nubs with their combined extracurriculars. Bryan wanted kids some day. Actually, maybe just 'kid'. One would be more than enough.
"I'm Big Bee, this is great, isn't it? Just like the games," he said, smiling and sticking out his hand in a warm greeting that was so relentlessly practiced that it was sure to seamlessly ingratiate him with the young trainer. He could almost feel the five-star reviews rolling in already.
He's pretty young, Bryan thought, looking over the fresh-faced character.
His smile almost faltered. It was only through sheer, tooth-clenching control that he kept his face straight.
Fuck. He's a kid. Oh shit. Oh Bryan you idiot you've fucked it up right from square one. Chilling lines of digital sweat rolled down Big Bee's back as the game responded to his increased heartrate.
He made a kid. Trainers are supposed to be kids! 10 years old! Just like Ash! Dammit dammit dammit! He's the only one that's seen me. I can still edit my character and age them down. It's fine! How much is a character re-spec? Is it 200 BYTES? I've only got fifty! Should I just make a new character?
Big Bee was saved from this spiral by their Mom answering the doorbell. "Hey my little Scorbunnies! You two look like you're heading off on an adventure," said the serene mother of multitudes. "I can't believe the day has already come, it's just like the fortune-teller told me the day you were born," she continued, opening the front door wide and retreating into their house. She drifted towards the kitchen and threw open another door, this time revealing a pantry full of stacked boxes of Rapidas branded running shoes.
"I always make it a point to go right after they let me out of the hospital. They tell me I should stay overnight, but honestly I just need to sleep in my own bed. There's nothing like waking up to the sounds of the Pidove warbling in the trees after a hard labor. Besides, the pillows in the maternity ward are too soft, and-" she heaved at what turned out to be a keystone box, and a whole column of shoes and dried food came crashing down, spilling pasta and inner soles across the floor.
"Mom!" Big Bee said, rushing forward to dig the woman out of the pile.

"Oh my god! Yesss! I've always wanted a brother," Yggy exclaimed with a pringle-sized grin, whirling around. "Yeah, I'm a big Pokemon fan! Gen 5 was actually my first game, so I'm really excited." He stuck a hand out for the handshake, craning his head to look up at his epically tall bro. Strangely, his bro seemed nervous. Yggy was surprised by the sweat he could perceive on Big Bee's brow, the detail in the skin and rendering. It was amazingly realistic. But why's he sweating? The temperature was comfortable, though a little cold underfoot considering the fact that neither of them had shoes. "So, do you play basketball?" he tried to ask just as Mom opened the door, interrupting them. Yggy burst out laughing, and kept laughing as the two of them followed their game-mother into their mutual My House. "You seriously think you gave birth to us?" he blurted out, "Do you like, remember anything about us? Like when we were kids or whatever?" Mom was unable to reply as a waterfall of foodstuffs and footwear swept her away like a bad infomercial. "Crap! Is she okay?" Yggy ran forward to help Big Bee dig her out of the pile, wrinkling his nose at some of the food items. Dried plums? What the heck? Her head popped out of the pile, blissfully unaffected by the avalanche. "Of course I remember, sweetie," she said, apparently answering Yggy's question from earlier. "It was hard raising you alone, especially after what happened to your father."Yggy's stomach dropped, and his busy hands stilled for a moment from clearing the pile. Not noticing, Mom continued on. "It was hard for him, working day after day in the factory with all those Rapidas. Some nights he used to come home and he wouldn't even recognize me. Just whispering 'shoes, shoes.' I'd say the company stole his soul, but maybe I should say sole!" Mom gave a tinkling laugh, standing up and showering the surroundings with more packs of shoelaces and mystery pantry items. "Be good boys and clean that all up for me, won't you?""Aw, man," Yggy said as she whisked away to the kitchen, singing a song about cooking them lunch, "I shoulda known she'd stick us with chores.""...What was that?""...Yes, Mom!"

"I used to play basketball," Big Bee told Yggy, as the 'brothers' cleaned up the Rapidaslanche. "But I'm more into surfing and climbing these days." He hauled out another armful of fallen boxes and tried to rebuild the towers, keeping the food and the footwear separated.
"I think this'll be enough exercise for today though," he said, wiping his forehead. He was still sweaty from his freak-out at the door, but had disguised it artfully as exertion from their digital workout. "Do you think this burns any calories?"
When they'd finished re-stacking the pantry, Mom returned with refreshments. "Here you are my hard workers!" she said, handing Big Bee a mason jar berry smoothie. It was an outrageous swirl of electric purple and molten gold, with a little sprig of mint stuck into the foaming mix. "Thanks Mom!" he said, getting used to the idea of having such a charming woman as his mother. Big Bee took a sip of his smoothie. It was amazing. "Whoa! This is the best drink I've ever had!" he exclaimed, and Mom's face lit up with sheer delight.
She gave another tinkling laugh and set the tray down on the kitchen bench. "Anything for my special boys." She laughed again. "You two look like a pair of Mime Jr's with those flushed cheeks," she said. "Though, I suppose..." she trailed off, the cheer draining from her voice. "I suppose you're Mr. Mimes now...All grown up and leaving the nest. Spreading your wings and learning to fly like those Pidoves in the big oak tree out back." She took a deep breath, looking lost.
Big Bee felt lost too. What was happening? Was she sad now? How was he supposed to deal with that? She was just a program, right? An NPC? So why did he feel so out of his depth? Should he give her a hug?
"That's just how kids are. You'll find that out for yourself one day. Some times they leave right on cue, like clockwork. Just poking their head out right on twelve o'clock like a little cuckoo clock." Mom took another breath, as if preparing to sneeze. She held it for a long few seconds, before letting it out.
Big Bee felt the smoothie in his stomach turn to electric ice that froze him from within as he watched the shift in his digital mother. He didn't have time to register amazement at the subtle programming. All he felt was fear, as he watched the emotional car crash happening in slow motion.
"Sometimes they need a little encouragement. A little push out the door." She made a feeble little shoving motions for emphasis. "And sometimes I need to get your father to blast them out of the awnings with the hose because their droppings are making the front porch a mess, and we're having the neighbors over for dinner tomorrow."
Here it comes, Big Bee thought. He was petrified, as always, as the oncoming train of female emotion hurtled towards the conversation. He was stuck, helpless, his mouth a tiny little 'o' of shock, lips parted around the straw he had been sucking on.
"And sometimes...sometimes they leave before you're re-re-ready!" Mom said, bursting into terrible, horrifying, heart-wrenching sobs. She grabbed the front of her apron, working it in distress and, weeping thick tears at the news of her two sons leaving.

His mother, crying because she didn't want to face the future alone, was not totally unfamiliar to Yggy. The teenager dealt with it the way he always did. "Mom, don't be so dramatic. We're not going anywhere," he said. He wrapped an arm comfortingly around the weeping woman's shoulders, unsettled by the warm, sticky heat rising from her body. Is this seriously a game? Maybe his mind was filling in the extra details because he already knew this kind of situation? "Y-yes y-you are!" she gulped, "L-like I said, you'll see it for yourself someday. A Mother knows when it's time..."Yggy sent a frustrated glance Big Bee's direction and took a deep breath. "Look, Mom, it's not that big of a deal," he said brightly. He lowered his voice, becoming more gentle. "All that stuff about leaving the nest and all is great, but like, in real nature it doesn't always work that way. We're not animals, you know? Families take care of each other." He could feel her quieting down a little and decided to flex some of his knowledge from Biology. "And even like, in nature, some birds do stick around after they leave the nest. They help their parents take care of the other generations of babies. Like crows! They actually—""What are crows?" she asked through her tears. Yggy stopped. "Uh, I mean Rookidee, I guess," he said after a moment racking his brains for a Pokemon equivalent. Shoot, I almost forgot she was a NPC.
Dabbing her eyes at the kitchen table, Mom seemed to have calmed herself a little. "Thank you, sweetie," she said. "You've always been the responsible one in the family. Ever since your father slipped on the front porch with the hose and broke his thorax, the hospital bills overseas have been so high...""Oh my god, what? Mom, I'll send you money!""You're both such strong, independent young men," she continued, taking a sip of her own mason jar smoothie. "Go on, take them. The RUNNING SHOES your father left for you. I know he'll be so proud of you."

As the situation calmed down, Big Bee joined Yggy in comforting their mother. "Don't worry Mum, we'll help pay for Dad's medical bills," he agreed. He wrapped an arm around the woman and shot his brother a glance that clearly said 'What the Fuck?'"Running Shoes?" he asked, looking back at the re-stacked pantry. He had seen a nice looking pair of Air Gyarados while he'd been sweeping up the spilled pasta. "Well, with a pair of those on we'll be back before you know it, right Yg?" He gave a quick, reassuring laugh and went to check out the shoes. They were right where he'd left them, pressed between a pairs of lime green Croconaw Martins and a box of fluffy Sliggoo Slippers. He pulled them free, carefully, and opened the box on the kitchen table. Crepe paper crackled and whispered as he uncovered his prize. The sound filled his ears, like the constant rush of a waterfall, or the brush of scales from a great, winding serpent. "They're...awesome," he said, taking out the pristine sneakers. They were cream and crimson, and studded with imitation scales. The rim of the shoes were patterned to look like the gaping jaws of a Gyarados about to consume him, feet-first, and the tongues were styled after the tongue of the beast, flopping forward and bobbing grotesquely with each step. I need to get me a pair of these to wear around the office. Big Bee pulled them on with fervor. "Yg, what did you get?" Yggy Br00ks

"Mine have wings!" Yggy exclaimed, then showed them to Big Bee. "Nah, just kidding. Not real wings, anyway. Just chicken wings." Who didn't love the classic chicken-and-waffles sneaker print? No, seriously. Golden-brown and marked with deliciously syrupy Hydance logos, Yggy couldn't have been more thrilled with his offscreen father's parting gift. He pulled on his new hightops, enjoying the waffly texture beneath his fingers, and stood up again. "D'you think I can jump higher?"He jumped. No change. "Woah, I could jump forever in these things!""You always did love jumping," said Mom, who'd come up behind them again. She'd composed herself after her brief breakdown and was clutching her mason jar smoothie with both hands. After a tense moment she let out a sigh. "Oh, look at you boys! You look so handsome in your new Running Shoes.""Yeah, check out Big Bee's! They're like whole Gyarados!" Yggy said eagerly. He was anxious to distract Mom from what had set her off earlier. I wonder if she's like this for everyone. Would she be able to handle it when her children were leaving home by the hundreds, or would it get easier with time? Yggy didn't know, but it did make him miss his real mom. And his dad, too. Family is important.Real family, but found family too. Like friends, and video game NPC's. And lucky me, today I found both!"Mom, I'm gonna send you a friend request, okay? You can text me whenever you want," Yggy said after stacking up his and Big Bee's empty shoeboxes and returning to the kitchen. Mom looked up, a fleeting expression of surprise crossing her face. It was replaced by determination. "If it's not too boring to message a silly old mom like me," she said faintly, then gave a little laugh. "Maybe I can send you boys something from time to time if I see anything at the supermarket."What supermarket? Yggy wondered, then thought better of it. He sent the request. Mom gave no indication of receiving anything, but the status 'accepted' appeared in his User Interface. I guess she's got my number he thought. He ended up spending the next hour or so cleaning up the closet, moving some old furniture, then finally bidding their communal mother goodbye. Some people might have been annoyed about wasting an hour of gameplay doing household chores, but Yggy didn't mind. Good karma always paid off. And at the end of the day, when friends logged off and bosses were defeated, Mom would always be there waiting for him. That was something worth protecting.
