Honestly, the first thing Red Velvet wanted to do was start catching some sick pokemon. The second was to find his dad, but honestly the pokemon had to come first. That was like... the most basic of basics.
Unfortunately, though, the pokemon had to come second because some power-tripping developer had locked RUNNING behind a party-only quest. Like, whose idea was that? Even in World of Warcraft, the tutorial dungeon could be soloed if no one else was queued up for it after like ten seconds.
This... was ass. He was standing on a well-marked path, the Mom House within eyeshot, waiting. Watching the other players and npcs mill about. He was waiting for a tell, a sign they were new and unexperienced.
The tell was... if they were barefoot or not.
After waiting FAR too long, the winds of luck changed, and he pounced. "Hey- ma'am," He drawled, sidling up to Galatea. "Quick question- how about you come with me for five minutes, shoot the breeze with mom, and get the hell outta dodge. Deal?"

After obtaining her starter - and listening to what Professor Ash had to say to her - Galatea was almost prepared to enter the game entirely after a moment's pause. At least, that was before she noticed the Tutorial Mode popups in the side of her vision, each having little blurbs underneath them detailing what they would unlock. Which was nice - she'd never played any of these types of games before, her old life's expectations and desires being most prevalent at the time - so it was good to at least learn the basics of this game. Of course, the red-haired woman opted to go in order of number, instead of just clicking the one that interested her...so now, here she was. Walking about on a well-trodden path, her Mother's house clearly visible in the distance, some quest markers dictating objectives - Go to Mom's House, Learn About Yourself, Get the Running Shoes - simple little things that felt quite complicated to the statue, looking at the house and at the objectives. Should she just go up to her mother's house and knock? Or should she just open the door? Would she have to improvise the entire conversation, or would there be leading questions? What would the conversation even be- "Hey- ma'am," a new voice shook her out of her mind. A interesting looking person stood beside her, also without shoes on. Oh, so they must be doing this tutorial as well... "Quick question- how about you come with me for five minutes, shoot the breeze with mom, and get the hell outta dodge. Deal?" The statement was simple enough - a request to complete the tutorial, and then leave right afterwards. That would be fine. "Deal." The word came out of Galatea's mouth before she even had time to note her response to 『Red Velvet』 . But it felt right to say in response to this.

Red Velvet grinned in response. "Sick," He said, turning to head straight for the place. Green grass, picket fence, couldn't miss it. "Don't ask too many questions. Apparently whoever designed her had a fetish for getting stuck in dialogue boxes for irl hours." He explained, only hopefully intelligibly, pushing open the front door to the place.
The air smelled of tea and candle smoke, mint and lemon, and Red Velvet half-tripped over the threshold as he was walking in. "Ah, fuck-"
"Kids?" The call came from further in the house, their mother sweeping into view, looking at the pair of trainers- And giving a soft, gentle smile. "Oh, look at you both- It's so good to see you again!" She said, moving over to give Red Velvet a surprisingly strong hug, looking to Galatea next for whatever the young trainer was most comfortable with.
"Hey, so, we heard about our dads" Red Velvet started, trying to nip this quest in the bud. "Terrible, tragic stuff that happened with the... everything. So! We just came by to get our shoes and get on our way."
"Of course- Come in, I've just put some tea on. Red Velvet, dear, could you get the sugar down? And Galatea! How have you been?" Mom said, ushering the two into the kitchen. Red Velvet stifled a groan. This was going to take forever.

At the smile of the black-and-red haired character, Galatea offered a little smile of her own, letting them explain to not ask...too many questions. Ok, simple enough. And as the door opened, to the smell of mints and lemon, their mother sweeped into view, a happy tone in her voice as she gave 『Red Velvet』 a strong hug - prompting the red-haired woman to offer a handshake instead of a hug; 'It was what she was most comfortable with after all,', her mind chimed in as she walked into the home. At the mention of tea, one could see Galatea's eves light up slightly, and her seemingly statue-like posture relax a bit, walking into the kitchen as the other player stifled a groan. Was it tea time already? Probably not, but it had been a while since she had a good cup of tea... "I've been well, mother - I just got my starter from Professor Ash, so that was quite an exciting moment, I must say!" She began to talk to the NPC, her voice losing a bit of its monotone quality in favour of a bit of warmth. "What about you, how have you been? It must have been quite hard after father..."

Red Velvet tried to not look too irritated. He was just- Like, he wanted to play the game. Right? That's what people do, when they start games? They want to play them. They don't want to sit through a cutscene, or an unskippable "this is how you pick up items!" tutorial. It's why he skipped the starter lab- Why go through some back and forth for ten minutes when you can start, in game, doing things.
And now he was here, apparently having tea and listening to the longest conversation in the world. And, like, yeah, maybe Red Vel's ethos had been "be a mean little guy" but... He got the sugar down anyway. Whatever. He sat down in one of the stupid kitchen chairs, propping his feet up on the one catty-corner to him.
"Oh, Galatea, that sounds wonderful!" Their mother prattled on. Red Velvet let his head hang back over the back of the chair. He was going to die here. "That Professor knows what she's doing- I'm sure your new partner is perfect for you!" At the mention of Galatea's father, though, her expression turned a bit sad, and she was quiet as she brought the tea set over to the table. "Well, thankfully I have you all to keep my spirits up!" She replied, giving Galatea another smile. "I always told him to be careful... But he loved the stage. I think- That's how he would have wanted to go. Giving authenticity to Hamlet." so saying, she shook her head.
She glanced over at Red Velve. "Did you get a pokemon from the professor as well?" He jerked, suddenly snapped back to attention. "Oh- Uh, yeah? A little pepper guy." He gave a half shrug. Maybe she would get the picture. Mom did not. "Oh, how wonderful! That sounds perfect for you." Red Velvet rolled his eyes.
"Make sure you're careful out there, okay?" Did she not sotp? "I know all of you seem to like following in your fathers' footsteps... So you especially, Vel! Know yourself, and don't get into any fights you can't win." With that puff of determination, she clearly deemed that conversation topic over, and set about pulling sandwiches and teacakes from the fridge.
"Wh- wait a minute. What does that mean-"

Galatea gave a small smile as their 'mother' prattled on, listening almost intently. Noting the reaction of her fellow player, she opted to just continue to watch instead of responding. Though, at the mention of Galatea's partner, she'd exhale - mainly out of nervousness. "Thank you...I hope so too." Trying her hardest to at least remain cordial, when her mother became silent after the mention of her 'father', Galatea seemed to become more quiet as well, suppressing the urge to wring her hands, or at least speak up, mind preparing to race a mile a minute. 'Did I say something wrong, was it a sore topic to bring up, oh goodness, I hope that it wasn-' Her thoughts were cut off with the cheerful declaration of having people to bring her spirits up, the smile at least putting her at ease. And then, the matter of death. Giving authenticity to Hamlet...a quiet laugh, although a bit melancholic given the subject matter - even though this was an NPC in a game. "Well, all the world is a stage, and men are merely players in it - if he wished to give more life to the production, then I can't be too mad at him, doing something that he loved up until the very end." Then, there was her mother's advice, after asking Red Velvet what his starter was - a pepper? there was a pepper starter? Now that was curious, indeed. Know yourself and don't get into battles you can't win. "I'll try." she opted to say instead of the many other thoughts. It was the truth after all; she did at least need to know herself, who she was inside and out. And if the game could help her with that, then the rest of the advice was still good advice, at least to her anyways. Don't get into battles you can't win, be careful...all good advice.

Red Velvet blinked uselessly at MOM as she set food down on the table. "Um. Thanks." He said, manners having not left him entirely yet, despite the utter weirdness of what the heck was going on. Maybe he was reading too much into this- it was a pokemon game, and the main drive was pokemon... fighting. Maybe that was what she meant?
His eyes slid over to Galatea . What she's said... a line from Hamlet. It wasn't... like, impossible, that someone would just happen to know it, but... His eyes went back to MOM with suspicion. How much did she know? About everything? The sandwich placed before him was left untouched. "Oh, that's right- I have something for you both. Give me just a moment..." MOM said, bustling off.
Red Velvet squinted, finally sitting up, leaning over the table. "Is something weird going on?" He asked, voice a bit hissed, as if worried MOM would hear. "Your- your real life fam. Do they act, or something? Anything?"
Before she could answer, though, Mom returned, two boxes in hand. “Here you two are- some brand new shoes! You should be able to get around just fine in these. Be safe, okay?”
Red Velvet blinked, taking the box, opening it to see the black boots within. “Oh… sick. Thanks, Mom.”
