They return to the Steppes invigorated. Tepig by this point seems a little better—and by better, it’s more that he’s replaced the self-deprecation with single-minded fervor. Kazuki follows behind him with his hands in his pockets, at a more leisurely pace. He would not be surprised if Tepig attempts to eat the next steel type they encounter.
“Don’t waste too much energy, we still have to find one,” Kazuki snickers. And really, there isn’t much of a rush. Once they’ve trained enough and obtained a good number of steel types to hand in to the professor, all that’s left to do is find Verai and visit the new area.
Tepig continues to march, embers puffing out of his nostrils, the fire burning bright in his eyes and his belly.

After a very eventful detour involving a Duraludon, several deaths, and the ultimate fox lady ever, they’re back on the path they were originally forging through. Despite the harsh beatings and generally being treated like a pair of sentient train tracks, Kazuki is energetic as he leads them forward.
“Alright, now we train.”
Tepig stares at him. Stares at him for a very, very long time. Long enough that Kazuki has to cede the staring contest and come to pluck him off the ground.
“Quit sassing me, it’s worth it. Once you’re a bit bigger, fine, you can beat the shit out of whatever dinosaurs we meet. Deal?” Kazuki says, looking down at the Tepig under his arm.
Tepig sighs, closing his eyes, which Kazuki takes as a yes. <Can you put me down? I’d like to walk.>

They encounter a Blitzle. It rushes towards them, lightning curling over its razor-sharp mane with the intent to char them to a crisp.
Kazuki side-steps, and because he’s still carrying Tepig like a bag of flour, they do avoid the first hit.
<Trainer, when are we going to train.> Tepig wiggles his legs but is unable to escape his trainer’s hold. He thinks, briefly, of biting the man’s arm.
“Not metal, not worth it,” Kazuki says easily. “You’ve figured out how to use your fire a bit more, but it’s still not hot enough to just melt through everything easily. We stick with the cogs.”
Tepig grumbles as they continue down the path, his glare set on the Blitzle.

“You’re a quiet one, huh?” Kazuki asks, raising a brow at the Tepig he’s finally setting down on the ground. Tepig shakes himself, but doesn’t say anything beyond snorting out of his nose. “I’ve got a monkey who doesn’t talk that’s chattier than you.”
That makes the fire type pause. <They don’t talk? Why?>
And this, in turn, makes Kazuki stop, because he had never thought about it. “… Don't know,” he says with a shrug. “Maybe he’s mute. Maybe he just doesn’t want to. Not like it matters. He usually just does what he wants anyways, and if there’s anything too complicated to explain with body language, he just draws it.”
<And you just… are okay with it?> Tepig’s face scrunches with genuine confusion, as this picture goes against everything he’s learned about his trainer so far, but it doesn't seem like the man is lying.
“Why not? As long as he can deal with the team and fight.” Kazuki looks around, thinking out loud to himself. “You'll need to meet them soon too.”

They find a Mareep grazing innocently in a field of little daisies.
“Not that one,” Kazuki says, moving to take a route around the distracted sheep. “Not unless you want lamb chops.”
Tepig stands corrected. He hasn’t met any of his teammates yet, but he dreads the experience. He hasn't been with the man for more than a day and he already feels unmoored, emotionally-speaking. He can only imagine what the others, who have had more prolonged exposure, are like.
“Come on, step to it. I said you could cook it at will, but that thing is still big enough to eat you.”
Tepig trots a little faster.

The mareep however, has keener senses than expected.
The sound of a squeal stops Kazuki in his tracks. He pivots, returning to the daisy field, only to see Tepig being attacked by the rabid sheep. He has to step in and quickly scoop the pig, driving the mareep away by kicking at it and bailing before it can change its mind and go for seconds.
“Yeah, you really need to get stronger soon,” Kazuki looks down at the bite marks littering over Tepig’s back. “Aren’t sheep vegetarian? Are you just bacon to the world right now?”
Tepig grumbles, but doesn’t protest being held like a sack of potatoes this time. His ears twitch with fear at his surroundings, wondering if the mareep will come charging out of the bushes. |

His paranoia is confirmed. The Mareep comes charging out of the bushes, chasing after them with bloodlust clear in its little eyes.
“What the actual fuck,” Kazuki says before breaking out into a sprint, unable to help but cackle at the turn of events. The Mareep is snapping and zapping at his heels, and never has he seen such a vindictive pile of cottonballs.
“Maybe I should catch it.” Violent lamb is starting to grow on him. But Tepig protests, demanding they run faster. spawn reset! |

They’re chased down the path, Kazuki still chuckling as he goes. He’s running, but it’s more of a brisk run, as if curious if the Mareep will actually try and chomp his ankles.
It does, but only accomplishes tearing a bit of his pantleg off. An enraged bleat sounds behind him, but Kazuki continues on, farther and farther, until the sheep is once again out of sight.
“All right, I think that’s far enough. Let’s keep going.” He bends down to replace Tepig back on the ground. Tepig stands up, but it’s a peculiar stance. He has his legs spread out wide, tense.
“Will you relax? What are the odds that thing will come back again?” Kazuki asks, because he loves to poke the sleeping bear that is fate. |

Fate returns to sleep. The pokemon that comes bursting out to the dry plains is a Doduo, its twin heads flailing wildly in the wind. Kazuki and Tepig watch it run around in circles for a good 10 minutes or so.
<What… is it doing?>
Looking back to where the bird came from, Kazuki notices a flash of something in the distance. He chuckles. “Looks like our little sheep friend’s pissed off it can’t find us. This one’s just one of the casualties.”
The Doduo gobbles incoherently, trampling all in its path as tiny sparks dance across its plumage. Kazuki steps out of its way, but Tepig is slower.

The little crash incident with the Doduo had led them to a quick retreat back at the shrine. It’s a considerable time before they return to the Steppes.
“This should be fine,” Kazuki hums, kicking away a few stones. The path they’re taking this time is up the side of a jutting stone hill, where grass tickles Tepig’s nose and the trees aren’t particularly tall. It’s actually pleasant. “No sheep, see? Now let’s find you some opponents.”
They continue up. Tepig is in front, using his snout to sniff for any occupied territories. He turns his nose to the air, taking in the scent of ozone. |

A Drilbur bursts through the ground, its long snout poking curiously at the newcomers. It must have heard them trudging over its home.
Kazuki’s brows raise and he takes a moment to look it up on his Pokedex, checking to see if it was the right type. The answer is no. “Hold the fire,” Kazuki says, causing Tepig to choke a little, as the pig had been building up an Ember to spew. Tepig frantically gulps, huffing out smoke from his nose. “It’ll crush you if you fight it. Keep moving, we got to get off its territory before it goes haywire.” spawn reset |

The Drilbur does chase them down, the digging trail of jutting earth following them until they reach the end of its territory, which turns out to be much farther than anticipated.
By the time they’re in the clear, they find themselves back on a familiar dry path. Tepig resumes scouting the area, sniffing the ground in a manner that reminds Kazuki a lot of how his own dog searches during their walks. He doesn’t rush his pokemon, sauntering behind the eager piglet as if he were, in fact, taking him on a nice weekend stroll.
“Anything?” Kazuki asks.
<A little bit further…> Tepig mumbles, trotting through the shrubbery, his nose still low but ears twitching, alert. |

A screech from the sky calls their attention.
Kazuki has little time to react; he dives, nabbing his piglet off the ground before the bird can come make porkchops out of him. “Fuck off!” He hisses as it swipes its claws on his head, trying to nab Tepig from his hands.
Tepig tries to shoot fire at it, but it’s moving too fast, and Kazuki is jarring his aim, plus he has to take cover. They scramble down the Steppes with it hot on their heels.

They manage to escape the enraged bird, Tepig tucked against Kazuki as they take cover in random brittle trees and outcrops of stone.
When the coast is clear, Kazuki returns to the open. There’s a few feathers sticking out of his hair.
Tepig glares up at him. <What am I supposed to train against?> He’s getting impatient. He just wants to fight now, to fight anything.
“Something that won’t have us jogging back and forth from the shrine,” Kazuki responds as he uses his free hand to pick the feathers out of his hair.

But the Steppes had spoken, and it said no. The first thing that bursts out as they return is a giant… nose?
“Stop smelling like fresh bacon,” Kazuki hisses, shaking Tepig in his hands, who continues to be lost because he has literally done nothing wrong in his young life.
The walking nose sniffs in their direction. Sniffs with enough force to pull the grass.
“NOPE,” Kazuki says, checking out harder than he’s ever checked out thus far. He books it down the steppe, resolving to dunk Tepig donut-style in the first pool of mud he finds. spawn reset |
