The sky roars with thunderous applause as a giant serpent rises to full height, its jagged maw opening to unleash a resounding GYASHAAAAAAAAA!
Kazukiâs eyes move down to his pokemon, all of them huddled together in front of him, trying to take shelter from the storm under each other. âWhat⌠happened?â
No one speaks. Looks are exchanged; silent agreementsâbefore the lot of them step back, leaving only Sprigatito, who yelps upon realizing heâs been shoved into the limelight.
Kazukiâs gaze narrows. âIâll ask again. What. Happened.â The ground is shaking.
Sprigatito gulps, his ears pinned back. The urge to run and hide is strong. His trainer is furious, and Pansear on his shoulder looks ready to start chucking his armful of berries at any hint of lying.
Sprigatito steels his nerves. He shakes his fur and puffs up as best as he can under the rain. Heâs a leader now. He has to act like one. He has to tell the truth.
He opens his mouth and begins to explain from the top.

20 MINUTES EARLIER
Itâs training day! Sprigatito opens his eyes to see heâs been released in the middle of a pretty meadow: the scent of flowers in the air, plenty of room to walk around, and even a pond with glittering water in the center to play in. He quickly finds heâs not alone; heâs surrounded by his teammates.
âOi! All of you, listen up,â calls his trainer. âA while back, I was informed about some⌠glaring issues about this team, so todayâs going to be spent ironing it out and getting to know the new members.â
Sprigatito shrinks a little, and then even more as he sees his trainer wave his hand in his direction. Is this it? His karma for running away: getting scolded in front of everyone?
âBut let me make this clear. Any time Iâm not around, the catâs the leader.â
Sprigatito feels his heart leap as soon as the words register, unable to help the huge smile that stretches across his face. <Really?!>
âYes, really.â Thereâs a few murmurs among the group, but protests wither under his trainerâs glare. âYou all answer to him. Got it?â
The murmurs turn into various states of assent ranging from <Alright.> to <FineâŚ>
He divides them up. What follows are the usual sparring sessions, though Sprigatito finds the battles a lot more challenging than usual. Three of his new teammates are fire types, and they mean business.
So, he has to show them he means business too!
After Torchic launches a burst of EMBER at him, Sprigatito retaliates with a combination of MAGICAL LEAF and LEAFAGE, knocking her out of the ring they had drawn in the dirt.
âNo fair!â Torchic chirps, shaking off the leaves from her plumage.
âYes, fair! I can do that since Iâve been fighting as a Sweeper.â There hadnât been any rule stating he couldnât use Fast Attacks. âDonât worry, youâll learn how to do it too!â As a leader, he should impart wisdom and motivation to his teammates!
Torchic doesnât say anything, moving on to her next opponent, Tepig.
âCat! Come here!â
Sprigatito hops to his feet, heading over to his trainer, whoâs standing by the sidelines with Pansear, Mudbray, and Buizelâthe main team! Heâs a little upset they hadnât called him earlier for such an important-looking meeting.
âIâm taking the monkey into the deeper woods to find some ingredients. I wonât be long, but youâre in charge of watching over the team until I get back. Donât let any wild pokemon mess with the newbies.â He turns to Mudbray. âAnd if anything happens, you come and get us. Immediately.â
<You can count on us!> Sprigatito chirps, and then, meekly, he says to Pansear: âAnd um, I hope you can find some really, really nice ingredientsâŚâ
Pansear huffs, and before he knows it, thereâs a paw ruffling his head! Sprigatito whines, trying to fix his fur as Pansear climbs up to perch on their trainerâs shoulder. The two depart.

âNow what?â Buizel asks, looking over the clearing. The fire pokemon have stopped sparring, instead watching curiously, probably having seen their trainer leave. The outlier, Magikarp, seems completely unbothered by everything, having the entire pond to himself (after nearly getting mauled to death by the teamâs Carvanha; Kazuki had to return it and change its training to another day.)
âWe should⌠take a break!â Sprigatito grins. âWe already did some fighting. Itâll be good to take some time to play and relax while Kazuki is away.â
âHear, hear,â Mudbray yawns, following after him and Buizel as they approach the rest of the team.
Sprigatito explains their trainerâs brief leave. ââAnd since heâs gone, I was thinking we could do something fun. Is there anything you all want to do?â
The fire pokemon stare at him, before exchanging glances and leaning into each other to whisper (weird!) After a few words, Scorbunny grins and says: âLetâs play volleyball! You all know what that is, right?â At the round of confused looks, Scorbunny takes some time to explain the sport.
âIt does sound fun⌠but we donât have a ball?â Sprigatito tilts his head.
âYeah, we do!â Scorbunnyâs grin turns wider as he dramatically spins, pointing his paw at the pond. âThat buoyant fella will do just fine!â
âWe are not using Magikarp as a ball!â Buizel hisses, outraged at the mere suggestion.
Scorbunny pouts, crossing his arms. âKilljoy.â
âWhat did you call me?â
âHey, hey, no fighting!â Sprigatito says, stepping forwards to stop the two from clashing. âWeâre supposed to be having fun! We canât just go around hurting our ownââ
âWhy not?â Itâs Torchic this time who interjects. âEveryone should be able to handle some pain. What makes him so special?â
He can feel heat crawling over his face. Itâs a familiar frustration that he has to tamp down because- because heâs supposed to be a role model now! âThatâs not what I meant. Teammates need to care for each other.â
Torchic glares, stepping forwards and pushing into his space, her beak held high. âKnow what I think?â She snickers. âI think youâre just scared. I think you know that if we were pit against each other, weâd be a better team than you guys.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Sprigatito says, horrified with where this conversation has gone.
âHavenât you noticed?â Torchic says with a roll of her eyes. âOur trainerâs a Kindler. Those are fire-type specialists. So, itâs only a matter of time before he replaces you with all the fire pokemon heâs collected.â
âHe- he wouldnât! Heâs made us too strong alreadyâŚâ
Torchic stares at him, unconvinced. âThen prove it. If you win, Iâll shut up about this. But if we win, we get your spots on the team.â
It hurts. Not even Mudbray and Buizel coming to his defense makes him feel better. His eyes wander past Torchic, to Tepig standing behind her, almost protectively. Tepig meets his eyes, only to look away, muttering, âSheâs⌠not wrong.â
Sprigatito meets Torchicâs eyes again. He thinks heâs not hiding his anger well, based on how pleased she looks. She looks as if sheâs already won.
âFine.â

The Game begins.
âStop!â Magikarp glubs with panic. âPut me back in the water! My scales are drying out!â
âI am so, so, sorry for this,â Buizel says, clearly distressed as she comes back with the âballâ in tow. She exchanges glares with Scorbunny, who is skidding to a stop after searing the lines of a volleyball court on the ground.
âYou sure you want to continue?â Mudbray quietly asks Sprigatito as she sets up the ânetâ, which is more like a low wall of dry mud separating the two teams.
âI need to prove myself to them, donât I?â Sprigatito mumbles, pawing the dirt. âItâs just a game. This- this is nothing compared to what weâve been through.â
âPlayers, in position!â Scorbunny calls, his voice as booming as a refereeâs. The two teams arrange themselves on either side of the court. âIn the Old Team: Sprigatito, Mudbray, and Buizel!â He waves one paw in their direction, before spinning with a flourish, stopping with arms raised high and holding the flailing Magikarp to the sky. âAnd in the New Team: Torchic, Tepig, and The Champion Badass of the Brimstone Crater, Scoooorbunnyyy!â
Buizel mouths ânew team?â at him and Mudbray. Sprigatito has a very, very bad feeling about this.
âGame start!â Scorbunny beams, before launching Magikarp in the airââAYIEEEE!ââslamming his feet on the ground, and aerial punching the poor fish over the net at the speed of a mini-rocket. Magikarp smacks violently into Buizelâs face, who topples over and drops him. He groans as he flops on the ground.
âFirst point goes to the New Team! GET! SERVED!â
The rounds that follow are brutal.
The problem becomes quickly apparent as the points rack up. Even though sheâs used to standing on two legs, Buizel simply doesnât hit hard enough, too scared of hurting Magikarp. Mudbray is not fast enough to block the fast serves. And he isâheâs scared.
The other team is holding nothing back. Even inexperienced and with only one biped, they coordinate, blocking the hits and quickly passing them to Scorbunny, the most experienced player among them. Sprigatito canât believe how in tune they are with each other.
âHow!â he wheezes, getting up from where heâd collapsed trying to save the last round. âYou guys just met!â
âYeah, but we get each other.â Torchic chuckles, bouncing Magikarp on her head. âWeâre all fire types. And we're all traded pokemon.â
âNot me,â Scorbunny corrects, âI answered to no man.â
Torchic nearly drops the ball. âBut you said you had a human before this!â
âNah, that was Randy. Randyâs my friend. And business partner. Anyway.â Scorbunny catches Magikarp as heâs tossed over by Torchic. âLast ball! We only agreed to one set, and the scoreâs down to 8-24. Gunna need a hell of a comeback, Old Team!â
Sprigatito wants to cry. Heâs trying very hard not to as he staggers back up to his feet, but even Mudbray and Buizel are struggling to recover. Itâs Scorbunnyâs turn to serve.
âAt least it was a good game!â Scorbunny declares. âFellas, letâs go out with a bang.â
He tosses Magikarp in the air. Sprigatito sees fire.
âNO!â
Magikarp screams as heâs sent sailing over the net like a meteor, headed straight for Sprigatito, who squeezes his eyes shut, fear grabbing hold of his heart. The fallen leaves around him glow as they surge forwards in self-defense.
And then: a blinding light.
When everyone recovers from the flashbang, theyâre greeted by the sight of a monster. Magikarpâno, Gyarados seems just as bewildered by this change as the rest of them, his huge eyes taking in his new, massive body. âI⌠I HAVE EVOLVED!â he says, his voice no longer a stuttering blurble, but the rumble of a looming storm. âIâŚâ
Sprigatito steps back. All of them step back, as Gyaradosâ eyes begin to glow.
â⌠AM INVINCIBLE.â

Which brings them to now.
<Um⌠Kazuki?> Sprigatito mewls. <Are youâŚ> No, of course heâs mad. <Are you super mad?> Is he getting demoted?
Kazuki has his face in his hand. Pansear also has his face in his hands, but his hands are full of berries, so heâs buried his face in berries.
<Are you going to return Gyarados?> Mudbray asks.
Kazuki wipes his hand down, frowning. âNo.â It understandably causes confusion among the team. âWhat do you think will happen if I just shove him back in the ball? Heâll lose his shit the next time he comes outâlikely in the middle of battle. The problem is that he thinks heâs above taking orders. We deal with him now.â
<Incoming!> Buizel yells.
A harsh jet of water is shot their way. The team disperses immediately; Kazuki nabbing Sprigatito; Pansear holding on for dear life; Mudbray and Buizel barely diving in time; Scorbunny bolting as Torchic yanks Tepig out of the splash zone by his tail.
Kazuki takes out his PokĂŠdex. It blinks with a new entry. He skims Gyaradosâ file, quickly realizing just how fucked this team is. No one has super effective moves against him, and nearly everyone is weak to one of his attacks. Whoever designated Gyarados as a Water and Flying type is on his shitlist.
He wishes he hadnât gotten rid of his electric types. Never did he expect to want Tinnitus again.
The fire trio screams as another BRINE is sent crashing in front of them. Kazuki whistles sharply with his fingers, calling them over. They huddle behind a jutting rock.
âWeasel, youâre with me and the cat. Mule, youâre in charge of protecting the fire types.â Mudbray chuffs, displeased. She still bears a grudge against the trio. âYouâre the Tank, these three wonât survive a single hit from that fish. I need you all to stay out here and keep him distracted.â Heâs able to cover just a few more points in the plan before another tremor shakes the earth, and a corner of their hiding spot is blasted into chips by a rush of water.
The team splits into two. Mudbray creates a pile of mud while Pansear and Scorbunny mold them into balls, Torchic and Tepig heating them up to seal them into shape. With enough ammo, Pansear takes one improvised cannonball and holds it up to the rampaging Gyarados to aim, before lighting the ball on fire and chucking it in the air. Mudbray is quick to slam her hooves into it, launching the fireball.
Kazuki charges forwards. Buizel runs beside him, Sprigatito on his shoulder. They weave past jets of water, able to dodge thanks to the flaming onslaught disrupting Gyaradosâ aim. They need to get closer. Close enough to chip at Gyaradosâ weak pointsâwherever they may be.
<CEASE!> Gyarados bellows, before pivoting in the direction of those blasted little flames. He lifts his massive tail out of the water, aiming it, and unleashing a TWISTER.
Pansear drops the next fireball. He yanks Scorbunny, Torchic, and Tepig into a huddle under Mudbray, who braces herself against the rock theyâve been using as shelter. The fast-moving tornado rips a path towards them. The battered shelter cracks, then shatters. Mudbray grits her teeth as she bears down against the earth, barely keeping her team from being flung into the sky. Pansear grips the fire trio tighter, his tail wrapping around one of Mudbrayâs legs.
âShit!â Gyarados is preparing another TWISTER. The next one will wipe out the reserve. âWeasel! Into the water! Stop it!â
Buizel is already on her way. Theyâve managed to get close enough that it takes her only seconds to breach the water, her tails spinning to propel her straight to Gyarados. As she draws closer, she brandishes her fangs, preparing to BITE.
Gyarados howls. The wind on his tail vanishes, but he begins to thrash in the water, trying to peel Buizel off him. The pond may have been spacious to him as a magikarp, but as a gyarados, itâs barely just enough to summon a WHIRLPOOL.
<WhoaaoooAAAOOOOAAAA!> Buizel is spun in the pond, which has just turned into a giant flush toilet. Sheâs tossed out by the end of Gyaradosâ tail, sent careening straight into Mudbray and the rest of the team. Itâs a perfect strike.
Now itâs just Kazuki and Sprigatito facing off with the behemoth. They manage by having Sprigatito use MAGICAL LEAF as a diversion, allowing Kazuki to dodge the next round of BRINE. Itâs not enough. Theyâre not dealing enough damage. âI shouldâve let the monkey roast you over a spit, you piece of shitty tuna!â Kazuki yells over the commotion. âYouâd be about as useful! OR MORE SO!â
Gyarados roars.
âOoh fuck!â Kazuki leaps back as the giant fish throws itself mouth-first towards him. An ICE FANG nearly bisects his legs, piercing and shattering against the edge of the pond instead. Gyarados rears back, about to turn his own trainer into lunch when he feels something crash into his eye.
<AAAAAAAAAAAAA!> Sprigatito screams in tandem with Gyarados, hopped up on gallons and gallons of adrenaline as he scrambles over his terrifying teammateâs face. Gyarados is flailing uncontrollably, trying to dislodge Sprigatitoâs claws from his nostrils.
âCat! Goddamn it!â Looking around, Kazuki makes a dive for the end of Gyaradosâ tail. He grasps hold of it as it sweeps across the pond, finding himself airborne. Gyaradosâ scales are drenched, and really not all that ideal as handholds, but Kazuki has spent a better part of his life learning to grapple the sweatiest men on the planet, and he is not about to get flung by a fish having a tantrum.
Sprigatito thinks heâs turning green; greener than heâs supposed to be. Babiesâbaby cats includedâare not supposed to be shaken this hard, or shaken at all. Gyarados throws his head back and Sprigatitoâs claws dislodge, a sharp yelp escaping him as he clenches his eyes and braces for water. It does not come.
<Huh?> He opens one eye, finding himself still a mortifying distance away from the ground. Thereâs a grip on his scruff.
âNext time you want to pull a stunt like this, tell me, got it?!â Kazuki hisses, half-drenched, his hair sticking to his face. He pulls Sprigatito up and braces him against the flat of Gyaradosâ head with his arm, preventing the cat from being thrown overboard as the giant fish continues to struggle. In the next second, his vision is filled with water.
Gyarados dives as deep as he can go.
This fucker is trying to drown them! Kazuki growls, holding his breath. He looks down to see Sprigatito with puffed up cheeks, trying to do the same, but the cat hadnât braced himself. Bubbles escape his little nose; his minty face is turning a concerning purple.
Something, something, somethingâ
Something tickles Kazukiâs cheek. His eyes catch sight of blue threads curling in the water.
He grabs them and yanks.
Gyarados resurfaces explosively, screaming and thrashing even harder than he had before. But with every movement of his head, his whiskers strain further in Kazukiâs grip, the pain of it excruciating.
âGotcha,â Kazuki grins, before pulling hard enough to cross his arms. âNow HEEL!â
A yawning groan is heard, like the hull of a ship crashing, as Gyarados topples onto the edge of the pond, water flooding across the ruined meadow. The cat is still heaving on Gyaradosâ head, coughing up water and in no state to continue. He looks around, trying to search for anyone, anyone left on his team to deal the final blowâ
âHoly shit?â
A figure plods towards them. Sheâs a mess, soaked from the rain and water attacks, a lot frizzy from the battle, bearing fresh wounds and scars. Her saddlebags have been ripped to shreds. An unconscious pile composed of Torchic, Tepig, Scorbunny, and Buizel are stacked over her back, and balancing the pile is Pansear, who looks equally exhausted, but salutes in greeting.
Mudsdale snorts, turning her nose up at the sight of Gyarados brought to heel before her.
<Pathetic.>
Before raising her hooves and using HIGH HORSEPOWER.

The sun is setting.
There was no salvaging the meadow, but the sky is clear, and the lack of fire hazards did let them set up a bonfire. Pansear fills everyoneâs bowls, taking care to fashion them to each pokemonâs needs. Sprigatito happily walks away with a little bowl of vegetable stew clenched in his mouth, looking around for someplace to sit.
He spots Torchic, Tepig, and Scorbunny together as usual, huddled in one corner of the fire and eating quietly. Their wounds had been tended toâminor, thankfully, though the shame of how quickly they were taken out of battle is clear on their faces.
Sprigatito hesitantly walks up to them, placing his bowl down to speak. âUh⌠can I sit here?â
âThat depends,â Torchic mutters, using the tip of her beak to stir her stew. âAre you here to rub it in?â
âNo! Of course not, I justââ Sprigatito sighs. âI think we, um, got off on the wrong foot. I want to try again.â
She still seems suspicious but doesnât protest as Sprigatito sits down beside her.
âAre we still doinâ this?â Scorbunny scoffs, his face covered in soup as he waves a spoon at them. âYou heard the boss! He said weâd all get a turn on the team. So quit acting like a bunchâa babies and make up. Like we did!â He grins over to Buizel. âRight, Striker?â
Buizel scrunches her nose at him before returning her attention to Pansear.
Tepig snorts. âYou shouldnât give her nicknames she hates.â He looks over to Torchic. âBut heâs right. Letâs drop it.â
Torchic grimaces, finding the blow to her already-fragile pride unbearable.
Sprigatito jumps in. âUm! So, Kazuki said youâd be a Sweeper, right? What if I taught you how to do Fast Attacks?â His eyes are wide and shiny with excitement. âIâve really figured them out! And since youâre a fire type, your moves will look super cool! Ifâif youâre up for it, that is.â
Torchic blinks, taken aback. The puppy-dog eyes this cat is shooting her is quite frankly impressive. âFine! Okay, you can, just put those away! Let me eat in peace!â
Mudsdale watches her team, chuckling silently to herself. Still a ways to go, but better.
Now if only she could say the same thing about this.
âYOU CALL THAT A FUCKING FIGHT?â Kazuki stands over the collapsed form of Gyarados with his hands on his hips. Theyâve been sparring together for hours. Mudsdale has been acting as referee.
Gyarados groans, trying to recede back into the water, but his heavy body has no energy to even lift its own weight. <PLEASE, HUMAN. I WOULD LIKE TO RETURN TO THE COMFORTING ABYSS.>
âYou return to your ball when I say so. And considering the trouble you put us through? Youâve got a lot to make up for.â
Kazuki grins, raising his hand. In the dim light of sunset, a thread of lightning can be seen dancing over his veins, his palm glowing with power.
âNow letâs have some fun.â
