<Perhaps,> the Espeon purred as she stretched luxuriantly before trotting to catch up with her trainer. <Although perhaps your mistake was searching in a cave.>

"Hmm?" Taylor hummed, turning her gaze down to the Eeveelution. "Why would that have been an issue?"

<Well you assumed that they would seek shelter, no?> She waited for the trainer's nod. <Why would steel-types have a problem with a little rain?>

It was while her face was upturned that the wild Pokémon struck. The Nidoran launched itself out of the tall grass to the left and chomped down on Dinah's ear. She yowled, shaking her head to dislodge the creature and hissing in fury. Fortunately, the motion loosened the Nidoran's grip and the bitesize menace was launched a good several feet away. Landing with a dull thud, it laid still for a moment, winded. A moment of silence passed, before the little poison-type scrambled to its feet and darted away, fleeing.

<Yes, yes,> Dinah growled with dangerously slitted eyes. <I’m sure it was very funny. Now, can we move on?>

Oh that was such an optimistic suggestion. Truly, the Espeon must live in eternal hope if she thought that Taylor wouldn’t be ribbing her about that for weeks to come. Finally the laughter ran its course and the pair continued to move through the Steppes, Taylor occasionally chuckling and trying desperately to smother it.

So distracted were they by the rustling grass to the left, that they failed to notice the herd of Blitzle approaching on the right.

“Whoa!” Taylor yelped, snatching her feline partner up off the ground and spinning to the side, lifting the Espeon high, worried that she’d otherwise get trampled. The herd split to avoid the trainer, cantering past in almost perfect halves.

They had been moving for only a few minutes more – just long enough for the final member of the herd to gallop out of sight – when a strange, metallic, buzzing sound reached them. “What is that?” Taylor murmured, glancing down at Dinah to see that she’d zeroed right in on something in the grass a few meters ahead.

<Exactly what we’ve been looking for,> she purred in answer, stalking closer as though hoping to surprise the wild Pokémon.

Taylor yelped when the teen damn near appeared out of nowhere. In reality, the other player had been wandering the Steppes for a while, and just happened to have a relatively silent walk. She really hadn’t meant to startle Taylor, but the damage had been done, and the Magnemite had woken from its slumber.

“That!” She grinned, gently pushing the other player behind her body as though to shield her, while Dinah launched a Swift, hissing.

Taylor grinned, rolling her shoulders in an easy shrug. “It’s fine,” she reassured, reaching down a hand to pet Dinah as the Espeon returned to her side, seating herself beside her left leg. “Not a big deal, and nobody got hurt!”

Reaching for her golden pokeball, she tossed it gently in the direction of the fainted Magnemite, waiting until the chime played to confirm capture. “You’re welcome to catch a copy, if you like?” She offered. “Are you out hunting them for Ash too?”
