Big Bee hit <ACCEPT> on the incoming friend request and pressed the button to <TELEPORT TO ARENA>. He felt a rush of excitement and fear, as if he'd just thrown a punch, and the meaty beach shack blinked out of existence. Everything went black, just long enough for him to worry that his character was trapped in a void and he'd have to message C0d13 for help, but there was an onrushing of stadium lights and sanitized sand. He shielded his face, eyes watering after the dark of the void. A simulated crowd of faceless NPCs cheered at him from the grandstands ringing the arena, and he gave them a tentative wave. They loved it.
In front of him, in two-foot tall neon lettering, were the details for the match, along with a collection of settings. He tapped at the options, looking over at Allotta Bambooga for confirmation as he set their battle to a 2v2 Mechanical fight. Big Bee's Pokemon had been returned during the travel, but as he accepted the rules and locked in his Pokemon selection, he was prompted to send Taka and Rian out onto the sand. He did, and they appeared with little HP bars appeared above their heads, along with their name and class.
Taka: Tank - 250/250 HP 1d50 (+5)
He looked around, shocked by the change in environment. <Where did the meat go?>
Rian: Sweeper 150/150 HP 2d20 (+5)
<An arena?> Rian asked. <Oh...OOOOOOH! Can I beat up that dumb Sobble now?> she asked, drawing her stick.
A warning appeared above Taka's head.
There was no option to accept or decline this one, so Big Bee just closed the window. A final popup appeared, explaining the mechanics for first time users.

The world goes dark and the void floats around her.
Then Allotta is in some place she's never been.
Raising a hand to guard against the stage lights, she turns in awe, a low whistle leaving her as she glances around at the NPC faces. See, somewhere along the line of Tutorial quests, Allotta had managed to skip right over this one. (Not that she was paying much attention to them anyway...)
She takes in what Big Bee's doing, vaguely, and figures he knows this better than her; so, he can choose whatever they're doing. Both Blue and GUN are automatically selected and sent to the field, having been put back into their balls at some point during the teleportation process..
"This is all so cool!" She flung her arms out, jiggling a bit as she did, and the crowd went wild. It wasn't real, sure, but she soaked in the attention. "I'm so glad my sister turned me on to this game! This is already so much more fun that sitting and watching bad TV!" Wasn't that what any good customer service person wanted to hear?

"I have no idea what to do! But it said I can go first! So!" Pointing with all the dramatic flare she could muster, Allotta grinned. "Big Bee, get yourself ready! Blue, GUN, attack!"
Blue had tensed up, unsure, stunned, but at the order he narrowed his eyes at the Grookey. GUN was still laying on the ground listlessly, so Blue picked him up in his weird grasper and brandished him like a knife- ass first. A squeeze and a purple stinger was popped out, which Blue swiped forward to charge at Rian with a Poison Sting.
It was followed up with a volley of Water Gun, aimed at the same target, quick and rapid to try and take down monkey for her stick related crimes. Taka was cool. Taka had just eaten a bunch of meat.

The popped out stinger shot towards Rian. She whipped out her favorite stick (a piece of mossy wood from a mango tree) and swung at the projectile like it was a softball and she was a world class slugger.
The stinger shattered into a thousand shards which bit through her fur, sinking into her skin and delivering their poisonous payload. <My arm!> she screamed, recoiling at the burning that was prickling up her left side. (24 damage)
To add insult to injury, Blue's Water Gun was right on the monkey, filling her screaming mouth with brine that left her choking on the sand. (39 damage)
<Rude,> Taka said, making no move to help. He looked over at Big Bee. <When this is over the meat comes back, right>
"Only if you win," Big Bee lied.
Squirtle launched himself at Blue, jaws clacking shut with each powerful chomp. Rian was right on his tail. She had a stick in each hand now, and brandished them like axes, swinging wildly and howling bloody murder as she bounded at her enemy.

"Ack!" Blue held up his stick thin arms to try and protect his face from the assault. It did little to help, especially when Taka was latched onto him like a fish on a hook. Still grasped in his pincher, narrowly avoiding the attacks, was GUN. GUN flopped around uselessly. However, there was something very special happening...
Rian's leaf on the top of her head was looking MIGHTY tasty. Neurons activating, GUN moved on his own for the first time since Allotta had owned him- jerking out of Blue's grip to use a nasty Bug Bite. That leaf would be his dinner!!!
Seeing this as his chance, Blue, tried to Sucker Punch Rian and get away from Taka. It was pretty tight quarters suddenly and he liked it better when he had a little distance.
"You guys got this! Go team!" From the sidelines, Allotta bounced around like she was a cheerleader. A few quick claps but she did glance at her pokemon's HP. Were they going to be okay? They seemed to have done a lot on the last turn...
"Hey, Bee!" Was hollered at Big Bee, since I needed to tag. "Do we have to go heal at the Shrine after this is over?" Or did it do it automatically?

The bug bite was Rian's undoing. As GUN chomped down on the leaf, her hair topknot came undone, filling her eyes with green fuzz. <Argh! I can't see!> she said. Famous last words, as Blue's Sucker knocked her down and out.
Rian has fainted!
"Rian!" Big Bee called, recalling the Grookey. He held the ball tight, and a popup appeared.
"This popup just said that they'll be healed automatically," Big Bee said, relaying the information to Allotta Bambooga . "I haven't been to the Shrine yet, what's it like? No. No time. Taka! Finish off that Sobble!"
Taka's annoyance at being tossed into a battle had grown into full blown rage as his chances of winning dwindled. He launched himself at the wounded Blue, chomping wildly. <You're my steak now!>

A dramatic gnashing of teeth, brought down on Blue's poor, poor arm.
<Ugh!> His HP was reduced to 0, the attacks plus the vicious combat making him unable to continue. The exact same pop-up appeared on Allotta's screen, which she read over carefully before humming and closing it.
With Big Bee's Grookey recalled, GUN stopped his hangry munching, once again placid and stiff as he had been when given to his trainer and her massive... personality. Allotta called Blue back as well, since it wasn't a good look to leave him laying out there with big X over his eyes.
"This is tough! My guy is, uh... a healer? Is that what it says?" She pulled up the stats page and gave it a quick look over.
"Hmm... does he still take damage when he heals? I could, like, try and healstall. That seems kind of lame, though."
A fine powder puffed off of GUN's rigid body, his Shield Dust soaking into his exoskeleton.

With the glass cannons shattered, it was down to the real rough and tumble of the fight. Tank vs Healer.
Big Bee pulled up his own status page. "Sweeper, tank, and support, I think. Yeah. Taka is a tank." He nodded over at the well-armored turtle, who was circling the healing GUN. "I appreciate that. You're an honorable opponent."
Taka gnashed his teeth menacingly, eyeing the chunky strip of worm meat. <Healing? More for me to chew on,> he said. Squirtle lunged at GUN, taking a stinger right to the side as bit down on the worm.

The Wurmple put up no resistance. Hell, even though he got a big bite chomped on him, he didn't react as if anything had happened at all. His HP bar went down, they could see the little ticking as it went from 'green' to 'yellow'. Aside from that visual indicator it was as if the bug wasn't attacked at all.
Much like Blue had, Taka was free to pick GUN up and wield him like a knife or just toss him around. Do whatever. The Wurmple didn't really resist. If he did decide to do those activities, though, he better be careful. That was still a sharp Poison Stinger that was popped out...
"I wouldn't say honorable." Big Bee made it sound like Allotta was some... super cool warrior! That wasn't the truth at all, though! "I just think it would be really boring. I don't want to win bad enough to stand here for ten minutes while GUN gets turned into a chew-toy is all."

"No no no. Of course you're honorable. You're a good person! First you shared your meat with me, and now you've avoiding underhanded tactics! The fact that it would be boring notwithstanding, many people would still heal stall just to win. I'm glad you're not a power gamer." Big Bee thought for a moment as Taka chewed on GUN.
The Squirtle chomped down on Wurmple, trying and failing to make much of a dent in his gummy opponent. It seemed like any force he put in was matched by an equally rubbery innards of GUN.

As soon as he'd said it, he knew it had been a bad move. He backpedaled immediately. "I mean it's just not fun for me. People can do what they want."

When @bee mentions power gamers, Allotta briefly thinks of Finnegan Fjord. She bets that he would be a power gamer. He was all stinky and competitive like that.
"No, I agree, I think they're dorks. Like, those people who make spreadsheets just to max out stats and make sure they have perfect stamina consumption in gacha games." Behind the screen, Kekoa thought to his encounter with some such people. An event was happening in a phone game he killed time with, and he was proud of having beaten it so he showed a screen-shot on the Peddit page... only for a bunch of dicks to mock him for using him stamina pots on it. Like, they seemed to not comprehend that he had a job and a regular life outside of grinding for materials.
Anyway, this was Allotta time. Kekoa could have his time when she logged off.
But, that did make her choice easier!
"Anyway! I choose...." Allotta gave a dramatic flourish, jiggling as she did. " to give up!" Walking out into the arena, and giving up the match, she tried to pick up what she could grab of GUN- wet with Taka's spit. As before, the Wurmple didn't seem bothered.
