Starter pokémon? Check! Taro and "Miss Telto", as they had decided to name their sprigatito, were making their way over to the house marked on their minimap. Presumably this was their mother's home? Taro (or rather, Tyson) hadn't thought there was much backstory to the player characters of this VR-game-thing, but he was about to find out what MOM would tell him.
Once arrived at their destination, Taro would stop walking and look around. They weren't opening the door into the building just yet, which seemed to confuse this little grassy cat that had followed him here. <What are we waiting for?> Telto would look up at her trainer as they were just standing there in front of the door. "I presume we are not the only ones participating in this tutorial task," they would answer, "I am hoping for someone to accompany us, even if only for this minuscule part of our journey." The masked figure would look at his surroundings again, surely there must be other new players around for this?
<I see...> The sprigatito would say as she rubs a front paw across her face, she didn't sound very patient...

Unfortunately, instead of "someone," Taro was getting M'Foxy.
She had opted to simply. Ignore what was going on. Flick off the settings, and act like it wasn't happening. Which, so far, seemed to be working! Sometimes avoidance was the right answer.
M'Foxy slowed when she noticed someone by the distinctive plot-relevant little house. "Hiya!" She called, opting to vault over the little fence, rather than walk through the gate. She bounced over on the balls of her feet, smiling winningly at... the kind in a mask. Spooky! "I guess I can stop by now. It might be easier to fight off pokemon with... shoes." She mused, not elaborating in the least.
"Oh!" She blinked up at Taro again. "I'm M'Foxy! And this is Gex!" She said, flipping her hair back to reveal the little treecko on her shoulder. <...hello.> He said, a little uncertainly.

Taro saw a figure approach that looked humanoid, but.... certainly not human. They blinked a few times, adjusting their mask as this fox-like lady vaulted over the fence. As she introduced herself, Taro's only thought was someone sure had fun in the character creator of this game...
"It is my pleasure to meet both of you, Gex and M'Foxy," He would respond to the fox-lady, "You may call me Taro, and my companion here is Miss Telto." Miss Telto would tilt her head a little to the side and look up at M'Foxy and Gex. <Hi,> she spoke dryly before looking back at Taro, <I can't believe it didn't take hours of waiting for someone else to show up.> "Oh hush!" They shot an annoyed glance at the sprigatito before looking back at M'Foxy and her treecko, "You are here to participate in the first tutorial as well, correct?"

M'Foxy took the time, while the kid was introducing themselves, to get a better look at them. Seemed fine, nonthreatening. Polite enough. Mask was a cute touch. Introductions done, M'Foxy dipped into a sweeping bow. "Nonsense! The pleasure is all mine."
She turned to look at the house again. It looked.... normal, which meant it was really unbefitting the western vibes going on. "D'you think they do this intentionally? Like, chose to have the anachronistic early 2000's house plopped in a historic western town?" She meandered towards the door as she spoke, looking everything over. "Like, this isn't even a gotcha type deal, like that samurai guy back there," She waved backwards at some white-haired PC in full armor. "Becaue samurai and cowboys existed at the same time and could have dated, y'know?"
M'Foxy tried the door, which didn't budge. Huh. "I wonder-" She pulled out one of her earrings, fiddling with the hook before squinting at the doorknob. "Because samurai very much could have been exiled for all sorts of reasons- and as a result left and went to Cali-" Something clicked, and the door swung open.
"Oh, I-" M'Foxy looked at the now-open door. "I wasn't done with my story."
She twisted to look back at Taro. "You aren't actually a French pirate under all that, are you?"

"Ohohohoh~" Taro brought a hand to their mask's mouth after M'Foxy asked them a question, "I will have to disappoint you, Miss Foxy, I am most certainly not a pirate, nor am I French." They had listened to M'Foxy's ramblings about cowboys and samurai, and how the architectural style of Mom's house made absolutely no sense when compared to its surroundings. Taro couldn't say he disagreed with her logic, and definitely saw the appeal of a cowboy/samurai love story.
As the front door of the presumed childhood home of their characters opened thanks to M'Foxy's lockpicking skills, Taro would gesture to the many-eared PC to enter first. "Ladies first." He'd say ad he made a polite gesture towards the open door, to which his sprigatito responded as well. <Okay, I'll go in first then!> And with that, Miss Telto ran off into the house. Taro almost expected to hear a loud crash of some kind, but luckily for everyone involved nothing like that seemed to happen.
Yet.

M'Foxy liked the masked kid. They had a sort of charm about them, and she squinted thougtfully at the mask's face as the pokemon scampered into the house. "Hmmmmm, that's fine. You can be the gentleman thief. I guess I'll be the pirate- I am from France, y'know?" She said, following after little Miss Telto.
The house was... also charming, but boring. "Helloooo, mom! We're home!" M'Foxy called, not hearing any sort of movement. "Hmmmmmm. Iiinteresting." M'Foxy then dropped into a sneaky-crouch, scampering down a hall. "See if you can find anything good before she spawns in!"
She checked that here was no alarm, and peered into the garage. Nothing exciting. Shockingly clean, actually. Didn't mom know garages were for random boxes of junk, not for storing cars? M'Foxy spun, headed back inside, and saw another door. Basements had all sorts of secrets- sometimes expensive secrets! She grabbed the doorknob-
"M'Foxy! There you are!"
A hand found her shoulder, and M'Foxy yelped despite herself. Mom was there, smiling at her warmly.
"Shouldn't we go have lunch together? The three of us?"
"....sssure." M'Foxy said, letting herself be ushered intk the kitchen.

There was a big moment of wait what? in Taro's mind as M'Foxy mentioned thief. Sure, Taro might be a mystery man type, but they really didn't see themself as a thief. While M'Foxy was busy looking for whatever "treasure" she could find, Taro was looking for Miss Telto. "Where did that damn cat run off to this time?" he muttered under his breath while trying to see if she had hidden herself underneath the couch in the living room. Nope, Miss Telto was not in the living room. Taro was on their way to the kitchen when M'Foxy's yelp caught his attention. "M'Foxy, is everything alright?" They asked after they ran up to the source of the yelp, but their question was easily answered by the presence of Mom.
"Shouldn't we go have lunch together? The three of us?"
"Of course, Mom, I would appreciate a nice lunch." Taro would say as he followed his fictional mother to the kitchen, where Miss Telto had apparently been all this time. The sprigatito's face was covered in juices of whatever had been in the fruit bowl on the kitchen table before she had come here. <Oops...> She tried to put on the most innocent face ever as she noticed her trainer come into the room.
"What would you like for lunch?" Mom asked, "Should I make you your favorite sandwich from your childhood again? Or perhaps your Dad's favorite, from before the Onix indicent?"
Taro picked up Miss Telto out of the fruit bowl before answering Mom's questions with another question. "Would you be able to make us some grilled cheese?" He did not want to know what this Onix incident was, but had a suspicion he would have to hear it anyway.

M'Foxy let herself be ushered into the kitchen, flopping down in one of the chairs. She glanced at Taro, giving a 'what can you do?' shrug, and looked to Miss Telto, who got a thumb's up.
She leaned onto he table, and was instantly struck with a feeling of deja vu- Had she done this before? Maybe, but it would have been irl, with no fox tails or green cats. But they felt specific, too... part of the scene. Did something happen? Was the Matrix reset? Was Neo still out there, being... Neo?
Like- she glanced at Taro again. They were going to ask for... "Grilled cheese," She murmured, as they did, eyes narrowing.
Maybe she was secretly Neo.
"Grilled cheese? Oh, your father loved grilled cheese..." Their Mom sighed, turning to gather ingredence. "I think it was the last meal we had together, before..." Ingreedle at hand, she returned to the stovetop.
"He had gone out, that evening, to study the tunnel system beneath our home... He always came home empty handed, but swore he'd come home with fossil records one day." She wiped away a tear, thankfully not getting it in the cheeses. Suffering made for a poor grilled cheese.
"An onyx just came out of nowhere, and barrelled right into him. There was nothing anyone could do."
Cheeses miraculolious finished, and cut into triangles, Mom returned to the table, setting out four plates.
M'Fox felt ballsy. "What about my dad?"
Their mom looked up at her, and sniffed. "Oh, sweetheart.... he was riding the onyx...!"

Welp, there is was... Taro quietly listened to the story about "his" father that he had definitely not asked for, while not actually eating the grilled cheese Mom had prepared for him. After all, he was wearing a mask and didn't want to try out if food clipped through accessories in this game while another player was nearby. <Can you let me go? If you won't eat the sandwich, I will!> Miss Telto squirmed in his arms, but the second she managed to escape Taro decided to pull the sprigatito back into her pokéball.
After Mom answered M'Foxy's question, Taro was left with an awkward feeling in their gut. "Oh..." was all they said, giving the lots-of-fox-tail-ed lady a look of confusion. Of course this was a game, and of course this was all fictional, but at this point Taro wondered if it had been some sort of fate that the tow of them had met here. Probably not, but who knows.
"So- erm- Mother..." Taro would say, clearly still feeling a bit awkward about this conversation, "Why was this man riding an onix?"
"Well, you see," Mom definitely seemed to be getting a little more emotional here, "He was like a local celebrity for his formidable onix-rodeo skills, but that day... the onix got the upper hand and rumbled off with your dad still on him."

M'Foxy had no issue with eating the grilled cheese, eagerly crunching away with little regard for the tone of the current discussion. It was cheesy and buttery and perfectly crispy- This was what technology should be used for. Perfect grilled cheese. He listened idly to the rest of the conversation. Honestly, all of it sounded... damn cool.
"Onix-rodeo..." She murmured, caught and mystified by the sheer concept of it. Like a rodeo... but with Onix. If you were competent enough, did you upgrade to the steelix-rodeo? Alolan Exeggutor-rodeo? Her eyes were starry, imagining a world she would, unfortunately, never have access to. Maybe, in another life, instead of just a trainer... she could have been an onix-rodeo-master. She sighed. Not even a perfect grilled cheese could correct this.
Wait. She cocked her head, face squinting as she tried to remember. Tutorial quests... Quest... rewards. Her gaze flicked to Taro again, bright and mischievous. "Mom!" She crowed, far too eager after instantly hearing about her father's manslaughter of another person's dad, who happened to be sitting right next to her, and was also her sibling. "Did he leave anything behind?" M'Foxy pitched her voice tearfully, in this very tragic situation.
The very tragic situation that would give her shoes.
Mom looked over at her, and gently wiped her eyes. “He did- I’ve got something for both of you, actually.” She said, turning to a dresser and unlocking it-
Rows of shoes inside.
The pair she brought to M’Foxy were simple sandals, with a taller base than he was used to. M’Foxy just grinned, snatching them up and giving Mom a hug. “Thank you! These are baller- You’re the best!”
