He rested, and thought, and returned to the Steppe alone.
Verai was on the precipice of something- he could feel it, a cliff's edge he trod along. It wasn't that he was nearly back to his old self- He was anything but. He was still blind, and even if that sight were restored, he wasn't the same as he had been months ago. But it was not being restored. There was simply... something else. Not in its place, but comfortably beside.
Verai was close to an understanding- but yet still far from it. So he closed his eyes, and sought it out.

He walked with purpose, and after a beat pushed himself faster, again and again with confidence until he had broken into an easy run. He let the noise of the steppe suffuse him, taking it in with each breath. He kept free from reaching sire, from stray stones, from pit and tunnel. He was confident- cocky, maybe- but Verai knew it wasn't enough. It was one thing to run through a field-
It was another entirely to fight.

He ran, and he listened. There was the scuffing of talons in grass, the rustle of feathers against feathers, the hoarse cry coming from sharp beak. An eagle-chick, though they were invariably called something else entirely. Verai could hear it, could tell where it was- half an arm's length from a spire, picking at the grass. Likely looking for a meal.
Verai considered himself grateful, then, he had not brought the others along, simply passing by the side of the creature, who when not attacked, simply paid little mind. It was a comfort to have Kitten, or some of the rest of the herd, with him, but the lone wolf actions he took now afforded the chance to usually... not draw ire at all.
He doubted it was something he could teach her. spawn reset

Verai slowed to a stop only at the edge of the Shrine. Despite that the Prince had taken the Shrine itself, there was still power here, latent and residual. He took in slow, deep breaths, feeling the static flick along the edges of his armor, catching and sinking into the metal. The thought of being electrocuted had been terrifying-
And yet, now, it was something almost soothing. Even in his fight with Kazuki, where he had decimated both of them- Verai's only fear had been for Kazuki, for the strange catch of his voice. Not the jolt that had surged through both of them.
Had that been because of Kazuki, or the Prince's gift? He did not know.

Verai heard the blitzle approach, the hoofsteps in the grass, the spark of its mane. Verai pulled himself from his thoughts, glancing towards the pokemon who, too, stood at the edge of the Shrine, looking first at the hole made, and then up at the sky. "It's sure to come back," Verai said, confident in his words. "The Prince would not leave us with nothing here."
Not that there was ever nothing in the Steppe, not with traces of His power everywhere, from the deep tunnels to the lightning that connected the land and sky. spawn reset

Verai offered a prayer to the Shrine and Prince both, and turned. He broke into a run again, wind caressing him as he went. The sky broke, finally, rain falling on him in a torrent, sinking into his clothes and weighing down his hair. He shook himself out a bit, trying to keep it from his face, slowing only as he passed the research tents-
And as he came within view with the gate that lead to Mistra.

Verai stared at it, as the rain crashed, thunder snarling ominous intent. It, like the Precipice Shrine, was something he could- could sense. It was an abhorrent wrongness, thick and cloying. The same sense that, in a much weaker state, clung to Kazuki. Something from there had gone out with him, and-
And Verai realized he wanted answers. He needed to know what it was, why it had wrapped itself around Kazuki, and not so many of the others who had entered. Was that other trainer responsible, somehow? All he had were questions... spawn reset

Against his best judgement, he walked towards it. It seemed to loom, as he did so, malice swelling higher and wider, tendrils reaching from it- but unable to grasp foothold in the Steppe. Was that the Prince as well, or a simple limitation?
(He'd found himself thinking of this less like a game- not like before, out of not understanding, but- but something else. None of this was truly real, and he knew that. Didn't he?)
Verai looked around, but couldn't make anything else out- just the Corruption. "What is it you want?" He asked, voice rather small in the yawning darkness. It did not answer him.

The silence stretched- There were no answers for him here. Verai stepped towards the edge, a hand bracing on the edge of the gate- and hesitated, his other hand inches from the barrier. He needed to know- but not recklessly. Not on his own. There was reckless decision making, and there was throwing away his own life.
With a shaky breath, Verai drew back, letting sparks cast over his fingertips, as if to cleanse them, before he turned his back on that, too, and moved. spawn reset

The rain was relentless, thick and heavy droplets that fell on Verai as he stopped, leaned against a spire to catch his breath. The thought came, as it always did, to simply not- to have his cats, to find Kazuki, to find anything else to do that wasn't running while soaking wet in full plate.
But he would not have gotten to where he was by giving up, and with another sharp breath he drew himself up, and pushed himself forward again.

He ran in the rain, avoiding stray stones and fleeing pokemon. He had to keep pushing himself, keep fighting, keep growing- Stagnation in the arena meant death, plain and simple, and the stakes here were-
Were so much lower. This was not life and death- it was nothing close. Verai sucked in air with a grunt. It was a game. Wasn't it? If he fell in battle- when, most certainly- he would simply wake up outside the arena, or at a Shrine.
Right? spawn reset

He slowed to a stop, again, reaching the border where the Steppe and the Timberland met. And, despite the distance, if he turned, he could pick out the portal to Mistra. Had it always been so prominent? Verai huffed, walking along the edge between the areas.
It was near here that he'd found the Prince, and then that Kazuki had found him. But why here? And why always he and Kazuki, stumbling upon things together? It seemed too unlikely to be chance or coincidence... so why?

Verai turned, half expecting Kazuki to simply be there, and instead almost tripped over a doduo, which was entirely unmoving out of the man's way. "Excuse me," Verai apologized, stepping over the little creature and continuing on his way. He shouldn't be thinking about Kazuki at all, in honesty. He needed to be honing his abilities, not... getting lost in sentiment. spawn reset

Verai moved back into the Steppe, his pace more sedate. He needed to not dwell on thought and hope, but instead focus on his goals- He needed to know where his weaknesses laid in a fight, and so he needed a fight that would challenge him. The duraludon here were, supposedly, the strongest pokemon in the game yet aside from those in the arena. Verai was avoiding those because-
He shook his head, and kept walking.

A magnemite bumbled in the air before him- He was getting closer. Verai paused, feeling it drift- and then he lunged, vaulting over the pokemon, who squeaked and beeped as it went, Verai landing on his feet. He let out a short laugh, heading forward again. It was all coming back. And, despite that, he felt proud. spawn reset
