 When a Wild PKMN appears, reply using the <ATTACK> button to weaken it! You may reply as many times in a row as it takes to knock out the Wild PKMN. But watch out— it might fight back! If your PKMN faints, you must go to the closest SHRINE to restore your PKMN. When the Wild PKMN's HP reaches 0, the player who struck the final blow may choose to capture it. “I can’t believe we went through all that effort just to get a freaking cat out of it. That’ll teach us to help out” Manish grumbled as wiggled his toes into the golden sand of the beach he was on. It wasn’t as nice as some of the beaches he used to go with his parents, but it was still pretty good
Ryan toddled along beside him, occasionally digging into the sand to look for shells. He wasn’t too big of a fan of the grit of the sand touching him but at least Manish was out and having fun. <Aw don’t be like that, it was fun. Did you see me tackle that one Patrat? That was so cool. I should tackle more things. Besides, we got a Wurmple from trading away the Meowth!> Ryan eyed the pokemon that was making itself at home in Manish’s hair.
“Oh yeah!” Manish reached up to pat the worm, he had almost forgotten the bug in his hair. “Hey, uh, do you also need a name?”
<’Spose so, if you’re into that sorta thing.> If she was capable of it, she would have shrugged her little Wurmple shoulders.
Oh man, if Manish would have known that there was so much naming involved in playing he would have had one of the help create a list of names for him to choose from. Alas, he was reliant on his own very limited creative capabilities. “Oh, worm? How about…Dwayne. It’s a pretty solid name.”
The newly named Dwayne rolled her eyes, <Sure whatevs, I’m gonna sleep. Don’t wake me up.> and with that, she snuggled herself down fully into the hair on Manish’s head and proceeded to tune out her two new companions.
Manish looked down at Ryan who could only shake his head in response. Whatever, a sleepy worm was better than a murderous cat any day so Manish wasn’t going to complain. Besides, he had a beautiful coast to moodily walk down while he contemplated life.

Manish was contemplating the pros and cons of breaking out into a poor rendition of How Far I’ll Go when what appeared to be a penguin ran out of the ocean and directly into his legs. Manish gave out a yelp, tried to regain his balance by wildly swinging his arms, and ended up with his face in the sand just in time for a wave to come up and smack him. Manish let out an undignified splutter and sat up, reaching one hand to his hair to make sure that Dwayne was still pretending he didn’t exist. Luckily the worm had strategically stuck himself between a few mushrooms and was clinging tight. An angry hiss to his left reminded Manish of the reason why he was currently sat in a pile of wet sand with the ocean rhythmically washing over his legs. “What the heck is that!” he yelled, pointing. The Piplup gave another hiss and dug its little webbed feet to post up on Manish. Luckily Ryan had the wherewithal to pay attention and jumped between Manish and the attacking pokemon. <A Piplup; we gotta fight it! Come on, Manish, just like with the Patrat!>“Uhhhh…” Manish was drawing a blank. There was a faint memory of Yggy trying to teach him pokemon types, but Manish toned that conversation out; it sounded boring. “Do a uh, thing? Attack thing?” The Piplup was slowly moving side to side, looking for a way around Ryan to get to Manish <Gonna need you to be a little more specific than that, bud. What kind of attack?> “A…leaf one? You got one of those?” Ryan was part plant, right? He would probably have something leaf related. Then again, he was also a toad. “Huh. I just noticed. You’re a toad, Dwayne is a worm, we got rid of a cat, that’s a penguin. They really didn’t do a whole lot of creative stretches with the animals in this game did they?” Manish pondered while stroking his still dripping moustache. <Not the time! And yes, I can Razor Leaf it.> “Oh. Yeah, no you’re right. I’ll ask Yggy about it later. Uh, but yeah, uh do that razor, uh, thing. Yeah.”The direction was good enough for Ryan as he dug his feet into the sand and shot leaves out of his small bulb directly at the Piplup. <Take this!>Ryan uses RAZOR LEAF on the attacking PIPLUP! |

Busy feeling accomplished from his successful attack, Ryan didn’t see the Water Gun headed straight for him until it was too late and he took it right in the face, causing him to slide backwards on the wet sand. <Not fair! I wasn’t looking!> he yelled. In return the Piplup stuck out it’s tongue and him. Seeing as how they were a little distracted Manish took this opportunity to flip over onto his hands and knees and try to make his escape. While it was a good idea, Manish isn’t what could be considered ‘stealthy’ and the Piplup instantly tagged him trying to crawl away. The penguin once again focused on Manish and let out another hiss while running towards him. Manish screamed “Ryan! Ryan, stop it! Don't let it get me!”Taking that as close enough to an attack command Ryan shot out his vines to whip the Piplup back away from Manish. Ryan uses VINE WHIP on PIPLUP |

Apparently Piplup’s do not appreciate getting tossed aside like yesterday’s garbage by toads because the penguin took the hit and then charged Ryan, delivering a vicious Peck. Manish froze at his little toad taking the hit. Was this really ok? Like, sure, ok, he knew it was a game. But he liked Ryan. They bonded. Seeing him get hurt wasn’t really something he was into. “You uh, you ok? We can leave, do you want to leave? I can run us away from here?” He asked, scooting a little closer to Ryan. The Bulbasaur shook off the hit and grit his teeth. No way was he going to back down from this fight. <Don’t worry about it, I can take it! Now let’s hit it again!> Manish was still partially formatting an escape plan but nodded, “Ok, sure, uh do the leaf thing again? To maybe, you know, stay away from it?”Ryan gave another nod and shot more leaves out of his bulb at the Piplup. Manish pulled Dwayne from his hair and hugged the worm to his chest for comfort. Dwayne, to her credit, tolerated the hug. Ryan uses RAZOR LEAF on PIPLUP |

The Razor Leaf caught Piplup right in the face, sending the penguin back quite a bit. Manish let out a cheer, holding Dwayne in the air like she was a little foam finger. Dwayne was still pretending that none of this was happening to her and pretended to be asleep. Invigorated by the cheer, Ryan dashed forward to meet the Piplup in its next attack. At the last moment Ryan turned, taking the Pound on the thickest part of his side. Sure it hurt but compared to the other attacks it was basically just a tickle. “You’re doing great! Uh, how about you, uh, remember that thing you did with the rat? Do that again?” Manish called. <You mean when I Tackled it? Oh I can definitely do that.> Ryan jumped back a little before charging forward intent on throwing his entire weight into the Piplup. Ryan uses TACKLE on PIPLUP |

Ah hubris, how cruel it can be. Ryan thought that this would be an easy little brawl, take out this penguin, show off his superiority, impress Manish, and they could continue on with their life. But dang, that Piplup really could put up a fight. It responded to his Tackle with a Water Gun directly into his face. Now he knew how Manish felt when he face planted into the ocean. “Okay, look, I am once again going to propose that we just, you know, leave? Please?” Manish called from his spot in the waves. Were they getting higher? Was that a thing? He should probably move away from them. Preferably move far away from this entire place where angry penguins beat up his Pokemon. <No! I can do this!> Ryan yelled as he stood back up. He was either going to take out this Piplup or die trying. Well, not really die. But as close to dying as he could get. “Urrgh, okay, fine, do the Razor Leaf thing again. That seemed like it hurt?”Ryan gave a nod and once again shot leaves out of his bulb at the Piplup. Both fighting pokemon are breathing heavily; clearly the fight has taken a lot out of them but neither is backing down. Now things were personal. “Ryan?”<What next?>“Are you really really sure? We can go, like, right now? We can go so fast. Dwayne won’t judge.” The worm in question definitely felt like she would judge, but not right now. Right now she was pretending that she was still nicely sleeping in her pokeball, not being squeezed by an overgrown manchild. <I said what next?> “Uhhhhh something new? Something big? You got one of those?”Ryan smirked <Oh I’ve been saving this.> He bent his knees and prepared to attack. "O-ho-ho-ho-ho!"A high, arrogant laugh rang out, startling flocks of aesthetic Wingull from the beachside palms. The camera panned away from Manish and his fainted Bulbasaur, away from the wild Piplup, up, up, up to a smug-looking young woman poised on the edge of the tidepool as if it were a gold medalist podium. She threw out a white-gloved hand. "Prepare for trouble!" she cried out in challenge. There was an awkward pause as she snapped her fingers repeatedly. Another Piplup sidled out from behind her. "Pipplup luplup!""To protect the world from deforestation!"
"Piplup luplup piplup?""...No, I'm sure that was right. Anyway," the girl said, tilting her chin back to gaze down on Manish as if from an even higher elevation, "It looks like you're washed up, trainer. Now, whatever will happen to this sweet little Piplup you've failed to capture..." She caressed the Golden Pokeball which had appeared in her hand. "Why, it would have to be a most wicked and dastardly villainess to steal a catch when you're down, but!" She sighed, dramatically, and held a hand to her heart. "...that is a burden I, Bergamot Gristleborg , will bear. Guillotine!"She clapped twice, and the Piplup at her side jumped to attention. "Pound, at once!"One flipper glowing, the girl's Piplup leapt forward with a swift chop, aiming to knock the pre-weakened wild Pokemon out with a swift blow to the neck. GUILLOTINE USED POUND!

“No no no no no no no! Ryan!” Manish crawled across the sand to scoop up his knocked out pokemon. “Are you, is he dead?” Tears were forming in his eyes. He didn’t know Ryan long, but they bonded. He was his first, he was there for at least three events in Manish’s life. That was more than, well, basically anyone he ever met. It was important.
Dwayne settled back in Manish’s hair after shoving aside a few drooping mushrooms. <No, you idiot. He’s not dead, just knocked out. You gotta go heal him at a shrine or whatevs> she said before going back to pretend sleep.
“Oh, ok, but what about…” he was going to ask about the Piplup, but apparently he had a savior. A beautiful, wonderful savior who apparently had a flair for the dramatics and was able to knock out that awful penguin in one hit! She was so cool and strong! Ignoring what was probably supposed to be insults, Manish shifted up to his knees in front of her. “Woahhh thank you! That thing was the worst! I uh, wow, yeah, like, I really appreciate you saving me and Ryan! That was really nice of you.”
He glanced down at Ryan. “So, uh, I gotta go heal him, but wow, that was like, geeze, wow yeah that was really cool. Thank you.” Manish was quite a groveling site: on his knees, covered in sand, sea water, and tears, knocked out toad in arms, worm in hair steadily being surrounded by mushrooms. Truly a majestic site.

"Ugh!" She looked down her nose at the groveling, grateful man. "It was merely a common Piplup, unlike my magnificent Guillotine." She grabbed up Guillotine and aggressively stroked the penguin's head, like a rich person with a purebred persian cat. Bizzarely, the young woman held out the Pokeball with her pilfered catch to Manish a moment later. "I only caught it to teach you a lesson," she said loftily, "I have no use for Piplups, as I already have the most superior one." She opened her arms suddenly, releasing Guillotine like someone releasing a cat by just dropping them. Unlike a cat, however, the Piplup drifted vertically into the air, kicking its back feet like it was swimming. "Ohohoho! See now?" Bergamot said smugly as the baby penguin orbited her head, not explaining what Manish was supposed to be seeing. She jumped down from the side of the tidepool and made a big deal of standing to the side, leaving the way clear for the other player to pass. "I planned to battle you and steal all your Pokemon," she said, clearly a little perturbed, "But since your Bulbasaur is fainted, I shan't stand in your way." She gestured blithely up the beach. "The Shrine isn't far from here. Go in peace...for now. O-ho-ho-ho!""We will meet again! And you will rue the day!" she called after him, laughing menacingly. A minute later, a Friend Request from Bergamot Gristleborg would appear in Manish's inbox.

Still slightly teary eyed, Manish took the ball from his savior. She was clearly an expert at this game. Look at her penguin! It was swimming through the air! She was definitely way better at this than he was and she was nice enough to give him his least favorite penguin. He wasn’t totally sure what he was going to do with it. Maybe he could trade it as well or something.
Either way, he was grateful. “Thank you again, you really are the best. And I really am looking forward to seeing you again!” He called as she left.
Manish sat on the ground, still trying to get his bearings after the fight when the little beep from his inbox pulled his attention. What…A friend request! He made a friend! Manish actually did it! Oh man, okay he was definitely telling his mother about this (omitting the violence part of course.) He knew he could do it, he knew that this game was going to be his ticket to making friends. Manish quickly accepted the friend request.
With a new sense of purpose and fueled by friendship, Manish picked himself up out of the sand and started his trek towards the shrine to help out Ryan.
