The battle had been over almost before it had even started, and they were back on the move. “You guys have gotten strong!” Taylor praised with a grin. “Dinah and I didn’t even have time to get involved before you took him out!”
Vixey’s chest puffed out a little in pride, though she tried not to show it. Archie would have preened, but being in the air made that rather difficult. He was back up in the skies again, scouting for further steel-types.

“Hmm?” Taylor responded, confused. “What do you mean?”
The Rufflet fluttered down to land on Taylor’s staff, perching at the top surprisingly gracefully. <Well, I won the bet, didn’t I?> He explained, haughtily. <I was the closest, with a prediction of half an hour! So how much do you owe me?>

“Ohh…” Taylor nodded, understanding now what he was talking about. In the next moment, a sly smile curved her lips. “Well, you see, you found the Klink before we’d even had a chance to settle on the details, so I’m afraid you don’t win anything!”
An indignant squawk left the little flying type, and his feathers puffed up in outrage. <What?!> He demanded. <That’s not fair!>

Taylor laughed. “Ah, but you can’t dictate the terms of a bet after the bet is won, little bird!” She insisted with a grin. “They have to be set beforehand. Else anyone could demand anything, and that way madness lies!”
She was talking absolute garbage, and everybody knew it. Dinah huffed. <You’re a pokemon anyway, not a trainer,> she pointed out, her tone making it clear just how much of an idiot she thought he was. <What would you even do with any number of BYTES?>

“She has a point!” Taylor chuckled, earning a rare grin from the Espeon. For once they were on the same side, rather than bickering!
<Well…> Archimedes started, trailing off and scowling. <Well, I don’t know, but I’m sure I would’ve figured it out!>
Taylor laughed, smoothing down his ruffled feathers with the hand that wasn’t holding her staff. “Take it as a life lesson, bud,” she advised cheekily.

The Rufflet huffed, shaking out his feathers and launching off from the Black Belt’s staff. <See if I bother alerting you to nearby steel-types again today,> he grouches.
“Aw, come on, Archie!” Taylor called laughingly as the flying-type gained altitude. “Don’t be like that!”
Thankfully it was clear that the Rufflet was mostly teasing – she knew he wouldn’t actually sabotage this hunt over something so silly. At least, she really hoped he wouldn’t…

Time passed. Not quite the hours and hours that Dinah had predicted, but certainly enough for the sun to have tracked noticeably across the sky. As they crested a hill, a herd of Doduo could be spotted in the distance. Taylor paused for a moment to watch them, fascinated by the way they took turns grazing and racing each other across the Steppes. spawn reset |

<Taylor?> Vixey’s voice calling her name had the trainer startling a little, but once she caught on to who had called out, she chuckled at herself. The Vulpix was standing half-way down the hill they’d just crested – apparently she’d been stood watching the two-headed birds for longer than she’d realised!
“Coming!” She replied, hastening to catch up with the Vulpix and the Espeon.

<What had you so fascinated?> Dinah asked as they began moving again.
“Oh,” Taylor shook her head. “There was a flock of Doduo in the distance – I was just observing how they behave when they don’t know they’re being watched. It’s really quite interesting!” Although her field of research outside of the game wasn’t animal behaviour, it was something she’d always been interested in.

“For instance,” Taylor goes on, excited to share her observations now that someone has asked. “Did you know that they graze off the grass, here? It hadn’t really occurred to me to wonder about their diet, but I don’t think I would have guessed they’d eat grass! Seeds and berries maybe, but…”
For the next fifteen minutes or so, Vixey and Dinah found themselves on the receiving end of a lecture about avian nutrition and behaviour patterns. If Dinah regretted asking, she didn’t show it, for once concealing the eyeroll that seemed to batter against her self-control in a rare display of tolerance. |

Just as her impromptu info dump seemed to be ending, a young Doduo appeared a few meters away to their left, seemingly having split from their flock to come investigate the strangers. Taylor beamed as she watched it, the flying-type’s curious chirping as it peered in their direction warming her.
<It almost looks like it’s trying to study us, back,> Vixey remarked, wagging her tail loosely in the wild pokemon’s direction. |

<You do remember you have a Doduo of your own, right> Dinah intoned as they moved past the curious bird and continued their search.
Taylor turned her eyes to the sky and watched Archie for a moment, as he coasted on thermals and kept a weather eye out. “Zazu? Yeah, why?”
The Espeon shot her a disbelieving look. <Because, if you’re so interested in the species’ behaviour, you could observe, or even ask, him.>

It was at this moment, before Dinah could answer, that a Yanma buzzed angrily up to the little group. <FIGHT ME,> it insisted, in a nasally voice.

“No thanks,” Taylor replied, not pausing in her walk. The Yanma buzzed in confusion, and Taylor glanced to Vixey and lifted a brow meaningfully.
That was all the Vulpix needed to see, and without any further hesitation, she shot a series of Embers at the bug, peppering it with fire until it decided that nope, this wasn’t a good idea, and ran the fuck away.

Dinah snickered at the fleeing Yanma, and as though attracted by the commotion, another Doduo appeared, twin heads popping up out of the tall grass comically. <Again?> The Espeon groaned, as Taylor launched into yet another lecture on the habits and habitats of various bird species. |
