CYCLE 4MOTHER OF MANY Underwater torpedoes fire from the ship's hull, sending Pokemon shooting through the depths like meteors.
The great eye of the Splashmother turns on GUN as the Wurmple's head-stinger drives into her body, an ant-bite to an elephant. Boom. Another dull impact as RIAN spears her side stick-first, slipping between scarlet scales the size of ship-sails. With CAIMAN's Rage and MUMBLE's Rage-Peck slugging into her one after another, even a creature as immense as the High Karp can ignore you no more.
A descending HP bar appears above the colossal koi as she turns to meet her assailants in another onrushing wall of water.
yQ5CXDwR1-1001-100 AOE SPLASH ATTACK DAMAGE WURMPLE, GROOKEY, TOTODILE, PIPLUP
Despite its distance, the wave rocks the boat and Ol' Blarney grabs for his hat and his mystery meat as he points with a trembling finger through one of the portholes. "Well, would ye look at that!" His voice shakes, but it seems more like excitement than fear. "She's called in the whole flotilla!"
Magikarp.
Your fishing expedition is interrupted by the swarm of gaping mouths and whiskered bodies that pour from the depths, summoned by their mutual mother's plight. Those who have completed the tutorial may have a flashback to your own (game) mom surrounded by her game-children. Filled with familial loyalty, the school of fish Pokemon flock around the Splashmother like a living shield of blank, staring eyes and golden-crowned fins.
Though they try their best to tear you apart, the Pokemon in the water feel only the rubbery lips and tickly whiskers of these useless carp. It's their sheer numbers, pressing up against you, that pose a problem. Particularly GUN and RIAN, who find their lungs or exoskeletal breathing-holes ill-suited to an underwater battle.
Stars twinkle in the sea as a black hole of swirling Magikarp block out the light.
"We've got t'hook her!" Ol' Blarney shouts, shrinking away and falling back on his old fisherman instincts. "She's feelin' defensive now, but a little ol'-fashioned bait to grease the larder and she'll be sidling along all pretty in no time!"
Is it worth it?
Can you do it?

The Splashmother flailed, her crimson plates shifting as she shook off her attackers. Rian's stick harpoon was torn from her side and the Grookey slipped down into the starry sea. <Let me back up!> Rian glubbed between mouthfuls of bloody fish-water. <I can take her myself!>
Suddenly, the sea underneath Rian solidified, and she felt herself pushed upwards. She struggled for footing on the slippery platform, only for the rising sea bed to nibble at her toes! <Hey! Get off!> she yelled, pulling back her feet and beating at the swarm with her stick. She picked one lucky Magikarp as her steed and, sitting astride him and using his whiskers as reins, and set about through the churning, glubbing swarm. She drew her longest stick and set about her with the new weapon, playing guppy golf with the rest of the Splashmother's brood and driving the swarm of Magikarp back into the depths.
Rian used Branch Poke +120 on School Shield (Super Effective +20x4, Rarity +10x4) pZFnVdQk4d20 +120
They fought back, nibbling at her toes with stiff lips. Even her steed fought back, trying to buck her off at every turn. She saw a familiar bug floating in the crimson tide. <GUN!> she called, riding the Magikarp over and extending a hand to pull Allotta Bambooga's Wurmple up onto the back of her ride.
Back on the boat, Big Bee watched the carnage. Magikarp flew every which way, landing wetly in the surrounding ocean. One even slapped down beside him on the deck. "We need to send backup! Another wave!" he called to the others. He hadn't saved the best for last. The most suited for the fight was definitely Rian and she was already stuck in the thick of it. "Taka," he called as he sighted the cannon on wounded flank of the Splashmother. "You hungry?"
Taka used Bite +35 on School Shield (Rarity +10, Trainer Class Bonus +5, Cannon +20) 1d100 +35
The meat-seeking missile shot towards its target. Taka's mouth was wide open, and he hit the side of the fish teeth-first and stuck fast. The Splashmother roared and thrashed, but Taka hung on. This was the biggest fish dinner he'd ever seen, and it wasn't getting away until he was full.

The Magikarp nibble viciously at GUN. They do little to stop it, eyes wide, seeing the universe far deeper than even the Splashmother could. A helpful pall saves them, scoops them from the peace of the ocean and the gummy, fish lip massage- Rian on her mighty red and white steed. She sets them down ever so gentle, his stinger trailing toxic poison in the water as they move, keeping followers from trailing too close. The urge to Bite The Leaf persists- yet they stop, and this may be love, or maybe just gratitude, or maybe nothing at all and GUN is a fucking Wurmple juiced full of Mamoswine Tranqs.

Allotta, meanwhile, is practically steaming. Well, not really, that was rather extreme, but how dare this big fish just... pull up a shield! That was totally cheating! Super, totally, for REALSIES cheating! It was like in a game if you healed 856383 times in one battle it was fine. But the boss heals once? Illegal!!!
"Blue!" The poor Sobble was just not managing to crawl back onto the deck, soaked and dripping. He yelps when he's snatched up and shoved into the Rod/Cannon. A frantic shifting of eyes before he sighs and accepts his fate. "Bee, you kicked that shield hard! Blue, take it down! Finns! Weird Mushroom guy! Keep blasting!"
She pressed the button with a whoop and laugh. Blue, with his new Sweeper abilities, readied his powerful fists mid-air so he could Sucker Punch the hell out of those fish. The sting of hitting the water was rough, the Magikarp that decided to chomp on his tail rougher, but it wouldn't stop him!

In his frothing RAGE, Caiman doesn't seem to notice the way his own blood mixes with that of the Splashmother, staining a localized point of the ocean pink. His attacks are fast, dangerous, but also reckless. He will not retreat. He will not be stopped.
Pushed back by the onrushing wall of water, the rabid water-type swims against the current to once again close the gap.
He doesn't need to be told to continue attacking. If anything, he'll need to be told to stop. Wounds deepen as he continues to throw himself with abandon against the horde of Magikarp and their matron but his continued RAGE keeps him barely afloat.
Above him, his health bar flashes red. Critical damage sustained.

Back on the boat, Finn is hastily loading his Piplup into the fishing rod cannon. The Swimmer is white as a sheet but his hands are steady as he secures his partner in the launching device.

Like a superhero, the penguin holds his flipper forward on the launch, using the momentum to deliver a sharp POUND into the Splashmother's side.

Manish watched with bated breath as Piplup flew through the air, soaring like a beautiful tiny rocket straight towards the large fish. The impact, however, was slightly less impressive. The penguin bounced off the fish and Manish could just imagine a squeaky toy noise in his head. “Huh” he said to himself. The other pokemon seemed to be doing some serious damage. Piplup? Less so. Maybe going back to the sandwich would be a good idea, especially after the giant fish retaliated and he could only wince as the penguin went soaring through the air from the hit. His pondering was interrupted by the literal wave of fish swarming towards Splashmother. Manish’s eyes widened; that was a lot of fish. He considered it to be too many fish. Really, just an excessive amount of fish. But his opinion didn’t really matter when they all descended upon the area Several of the fish flopped upon the deck and Manish let out a man shriek as one came near him. He slipped on the wet surface of the deck and found himself pinned down by a fish. He was expecting pain, but all he felt was the slight, undulating pressure of the fish flopping on him. Taking advantage of the slippery deck he slid himself towards the edge of the boat in time to watch the other’s pokemon successfully attack the barrier of flopping orange fish and he let out a cheer. “Yeah! Okay, um, uh, Mumble. Yeah, that’s your name. Penguin thing. Finish her off! Take her down!” Manish called, but couldn’t spot the little blue bird anywhere in the waves. “Mumble?” he hollered, but still couldn’t see anything. He even started to feel bad. That was just a tiny little bird he launched at a giant fish; morally there had to be something wrong with that, right? Manish finally pushed the Magikarp flopping on top of him off and sat up, only to spot his missing bird back on the deck. “Oh! Mumble! You’re back, great, really for round two?” His morality battle was short lived after seeing the pokemon was fine. Well, fine was a strong word; the Piplup looked like it had been shot out of a cannon at a large angry fish. In response to Manish’s call the Piplup shot him a glare before it grabbed the soaked bag of fried fish, stuck it’s tongue out at Manish, and went below deck. “Um. Uh, wait? Come back?” Manish tried, but the only response he got was the thwap, thwap, thwap of the Magikarp smacking into his leg. “Well, that was rude” he said to the orange fish before remembering that he was on a rocking ship in the middle of a glorious battle. Sure he didn’t really want to be there, but he knew someone who loved glorious battles. He fumbled with the pokeball in his pocket before pulling out the one he had smartly labeled as Ryan and pressed the button to release the Bulbasaur. With a flash, the chunky toad landed on the deck and immediately began to slide along the deck. Manish scrambled to scoop up the Bulbasaur. “Okay, um, hi, so, quick rundown. Giant fish mad, that mean Piplup is still mean, how do you feel about being launched out of a cannon?”Ryan’s eyes immediately lit up <Say less. Launch me right now. Right now. I've never wanted anything more in my entire life.> Manish nodded and ran to a cannon to load up the toad. He narrowed his eyes and bit down on his tongue as he aimed. The other pokemon battled had successfully punched a hole straight through the fishy orange shield and landed hits on the Splashmother. “Here goes, uh, um, something?” Not exactly the dramatic war cry he was hoping for, but there wasn’t time to contemplate it any longer. He fired. Ryan flew through the air, doing a flip as his bulb started to glow. Once he felt a large seed ready, Bulbasaur tilted down and fired a Seed Bomb directly into the maw of the Splashmother. CYCLE 5SPLASHMOTHER'S LANDING She swims up.
Magikarp and drifting stars scatter in her wake as the Splashmother aims towards the surface like a breaching whale, struggling to lose her assailants. CAIMAN and TAKA tear fiercely at her flanks as she roars in a burst of bubbles, fighting ever-faster, ever-harder.
The depths drop away as the High Karp buoys the unfortunate RIAN and GUN along in her slipstream, pulling them helplessly up along with her. EMPEROR and BLUE are pulled along as well, natural swimming ability giving them an advantage in pursuing the escaping fish.
As she breaches the surface with a powerful flip of her tail, all of the Pokemon are torn away by wind and water, stripped from her scales one-by-one by spiraling forces of sheer atmospheric pressure. The Splashmother launches herself like a rocket towards the only place she can be assured true safety.
But as she breaches the lower stratosphere, barely reaching cruising speed, the Splashmother hears something. It ticks like a timer, growing with intensity, like an alarm clock in the belly of a crocodile.
Tickticktickticktickticktick... ding!
From the deck of Ol' Blarney's ship, you see the ascendant red blob of the Splashmother suddenly stall mid-flight, as if just remembering she'd forgotten something back at the house. And she has forgotten something: an innocuous-looking seed, fired towards her mouth by a certain Bulbasaur, which she'd swallowed without a second thought.
BOOM!
The dusky sky is illuminated by a cherry-red firework, followed by a ripple of hexagonal game cells from the force of the explosion. Whatever was in that Seed Bomb, it didn't react well with the Splashmother's digestive system. Must have been all that hydrogen.
CONGRATULATIONS! <THE SPLASHMOTHER> HAS BEEN DEFEATED! "Ye did it," Ol' Blarney breathes, eyes wide as a Magikarp's. They glitter with tears and he wipes them on the back of his hand. "Ye beautiful bastards, ye actually did it!" With a jubilant cry, he hugs the four of you and his Grapploct, who lets go of him to point up at the sky.
<Wait, what's that...>
A shadow grows on deck, rapidly expanding. Something is descending. Something vast and red and white, something larger than the boat you're standing on. Ol' Blarney does a double-take, then shouts. "She's comin' in for a landing! Move, move, move!"
You're given mere seconds to either jump overboard or prepare to be crushed by the GIANT FILLET that crashes out of the clouds, splintering the mast and decimating the top deck of Ol' Blarney's ship. The fillet sits there, fresh, steaming, and perfectly cooked. Cue the 'awwws' from the studio audience. You've won.

Manish watched in awe as his little Bulbasaur caused the final move that took out such a large fish. It was like everything went in slow motion, Ryan soaring through the air, the seed firing out, Splashmother exploding a chunky bits raining down around them. It was beautiful and also quite smelly.
Doing his best to avoid slipping on a chunk of fish, Manish ran to the side of the boat and leaned over to watch Ryan awkwardly paddle back to the boat. As soon as he got close enough Manish helped pull the toad back up on deck and immediately pulled him into a hug.
“That was amazing! You did such a good job, Ryan! You totally exploded that thing! It was like, woah, like, um, it just went, like, boom! I’m so proud of you!” He hugged the pokemon to his chest. Happily little mushrooms appeared in his hair. Manish opened his eyes at the feel of weird pulsing coming from his toad. “Uh, Ryan? You okay?”
Ryan was starting to flash white, body morphing, growing, changing. Manish let out a yelp and set him down. “Ryan? Ryan, are you okay? Ryan?”
The flashing calmed down and in Ryan’s place was, well, a bigger toad with a more fully formed flower bulb on it’s back. The toad shook his head and legs, getting used to the new body. He looked up at Manish and smiled. <It’s me! I evolved! Oh this is so cool! Look at how big I am now.>
“You, uh, you’re still um, you, right?”
Ryan rolled his eyes, <Of course I’m still me.>
Manish laughed and once again hugged Ryan to his chest, only more awkwardly to accommodate the much larger size.
It was then that Manish remembered he was not, in fact, alone with Ryan. His eyes widened and he looked at the others on the boat. “Oh uh…” he coughed awkwardly and set Ryan back down. “Um, so like, uh, I know we didn’t really, um, you know, like do a lot of talking? I mean, there was some, or whatever. But um, I mean, we made a really gross sandwich together? Right? And um, I just, like, I wasn’t going to do this, but uh, Ryan really wanted to, and well. Um, I guess, uh, I’m just really glad all of you, uh, were here?” He glanced down at Ryan who gave him an encouraging nod. Manish took a breath and kept going, “it's just, like, there’s no way I would have um, you know, like, I know it was supposed to be for multiple people, but um, I just like, I’m glad we exploded that fish, uh together? Like, woah, we made a good team? Maybe not for cooking, we probably shouldn’t cook together again. That sandwich looked really gross. But maybe we could, um, you know, like, only if you guys wanted to! No pressure, or anything. But um. Maybe we could uh, maybe, again you can say no, but maybe we could hang out again? Or not! Totally cool if not. Just. Um, an idea?”
<That speech sucked.> A small voice chirped from Manish’s feet. He looked down to see his Piplup dragging a large chunk of former Splashmother over to him.
“You can talk?!”
In response Mumble just stuck out her tongue at him and dropped the filet onto Manish’s bare foot.

Chunky stars fell like gleaming rain, splashing into the ocean around the boat. Steaming, shining pieces of what used to be the Splashmother. Heh. Meateors. Big Bee thought, watching the shower. Off the side of the boat, Taka swam through the frothing hot pot, feasting on the spoils of war.
Ol' Blarney's Grapploct clambered over to Big Bee, its suckers plip-plapping across the wet deck. "Nice steering back there! I thought she was going to get away!" Big Bee said, offering a hand to shake with the Pokemon. It reached out three tentacles, which slithered around his forearm, covering it in thankful slime. Big Bee kept a brave face. "I'll be sure to leave a good review. Do you have a website or something?"
The Pokemon reached for something amid its mass of tentacles, and pushed the object into Big Bee's arms. It was round and hard, yet surprisingly warm. A business card?
No. It was an egg. Big Bee turned it over to check for contact details. It was blank, aside from some pale blue and brown patches of shell.
"Are you, uh, giving this to me?"
The Grapploct nodded, and pulled back a step, leaving Big Bee holding the slimy egg. "Oh. Wow. Uh, thank you!" He held the egg close, trying to warm it with his body. The octopus walked back across the deck, leaving him holding the heavy responsibility. "Does it need...water to hatch or something?" Big Be called after it. "I've never been a dad before."
