CYCLE 1BAIT AND S'WICH At the end of the pier is what could be described as a "unique" fishing vessel, captained by one Ol' Blarney. The weathered fisherman sits astride the railing, beckoning you aboard. "Ahoy!" he calls, grinning cheekily. "Hope ye brought yer fishin' rods!" The boat lurches as waves lap at its wooden hull, rocking it unsteadily from side to side. Characters prone to motion sickness will feel it deep in their gut, stirring like a sluggish animal as they step aboard.
The boat is a patchwork of wood, glass, woven reeds, and glowing blue portals (pronounced "portholes") set in the deck like manhole covers. When asked about them, Ol' Blarney just sets his jaw. His eyes crinkle warmly. "Arrgh, well... let's just see if we even make it across th'barrier," he says, adjusting his cap. "Don't want t'be too hasty."
Huge, gauzy canvas sails billow out as the vessel pulls away from the docks, hugging the Beta Coastline. A brilliant blue Grapploct steers the ship, swaying back and forth on its tentacles as it surveys the encroaching coral reef. It hums to itself as it steers, eyes fixed on the horizon.
"This way, ye fine young people," Ol' Blarney says as he leads you to the small cabin in the center of the sailboat. "So! The Splashmother, eh? The High Karp, some call her. The Devourer of the Depths." His voice grows quiet, hushed, as he hunkers down and leans in. "Now, I've been on this coast a long time. Rumors get to spreading. And word on the seas is that the Splashmother, well, she likes neat foods. Food ye can pick up with your hands, and no' get messy. Y'see what I'm sayin', lads, lasses?"
Down a small set of stairs is a grubby kitchen, laid out with a spread of various ingredients. You see bread—vegetables—meat—condiments. Before you can dig in, Ol' Blarney raises a hand.
"This here's the bait," he says simply, gesturing at the foods.
You feel a lurch as the boat shudders, grinding against an invisible wall. At the same moment, the countdown in your User Interface strikes 0, and a new popup appears.
LOADING... SPLASHMOTHER'S LANDING
Strangely, subtly, you feel your world shift. Ambient music trickles in like starlight, swelling and building until it becomes a cascade. The dingy kitchen is bathed in a new light, something that even the NPC seems to notice and appreciate.
"Feel that?" Ol' Blarney breathes, breath rattling in his chest. "We're through."

The freshly evolved Wartortle looked at home on the rickets deck. He appraised the ocean with fierce eyes, as if challenging the Splashmother to show herself. <Finally, a fish big enough to sate my hunger.> His tummy rumbled dramatically, and he growled with yearning. <I'm coming for you Splashmother...>
"We need bait first, are you coming below deck?" Big Bee asked, as the group headed down into the kitchens.
Taka didn't move. He was transfixed by the ocean. <I've never been out this far before...> he said softly. For the first time, he sounded unsure, his ferocity tempered in the face of something so vast, unknown, and unforgiving.
"We're going to go out much further I think. Past the normal ocean boundaries. Are you ready?" Taka didn't reply, and after a moment Big Bee headed below, leaving his Wartortle with the steering Grapploct.
As they scoped out the meagre offerings on the table, a loading screen briefly appeared, and Big Bee shivered. "Did the temperature just drop?" he asked, checking his setting. There was no extreme temperature warning, like when he had climbed the volcano, so maybe he had just imagined it...
"So do we know what it. She. Is?" Big Bee asked. He had a faint hope that knowing what the Pokemon was would help illuminate the correct choice of bread and filling, but as far as he was aware Pokemon only ever liked different flavors. Is pumpernickel spicy? Sweet? None of the ingredients looked particularly fresh, let alone palatable, but he wasn't a fish.
It had been many years since he'd gone fishing, and it had never been sport fishing. Plenty of the guys at the office had big boats for deep sea fishing, but he'd always been more interested in surfing or swimming. Battling another living creature for sport didn't do it for him. "Have any of you gone fishing before?" he asked the others.
The boat crested a swell, and he grabbed the edge of the table, right next to a plastic bag of flatbread. I don't know what the others are going to pick, so I should just go with something wide and simple. Big Bee cleared a space on the cluttered counter, pushing fillings, toppings, and canned accoutrement to the side. He slapped down an oddly-shaped piece of flatbread and retied the bag.
"There we go. Lots of room for ingredients. An perfect foundation for the best sandwich the Splashmother will ever eat!"

Not two steps onto the vessel and Finn is having second thoughts. He's not prone to motion sickness, but the way the boat rocks beneath their feet and the dark water lapping at the side of the boat is enough to make him feel sick regardless.
He hides it from the others as best as he can, save for his white-knuckled grip on the rail. He's reluctant to let go when the captain beckons but pride in the face of his arch-nemesis Allotta Bambooga is enough to make him step away from safety.
He feels a little better once they're in the cabin, where he can't see the ocean's looming threat.
Not good enough to even think about eating; he casts a doubtful look toward the spread, especially eyeing the mystery meat. What is that? He grabs Emperor by the scruff when the Piplup tries to hop onto the surface and investigate, setting the unruly Piplup on his shoulder.
"Behave," he mumbles under his breath. Emperor sticks out his tongue.
Further thought is spared as the boat lurches, and the shock of it all catches Finn off guard. His eyes go wide, fear genuine as he reaches for the nearest available thing to grip onto and steady himself. The pleasant shift felt by others is not shared by Finn.
"Yeh," Finn replies in response to Big Bee; his tone is clipped, short. "Don't care for it."
Strange video game side-quests don't make him feel any more inclined toward the sport, but he'd signed up for this mess and so he plucks a couple slices of tomato from a plastic bin. It reminds him of the kind of thing you'd see in a fast food place.
"Honestly, all of these could be messy," he reasons, frowning. "Are we going for something she wants, or...?"
He lays the TOMATO on the flatbread regardless. They can take it off if they don't agree... right?

Manish found himself standing awkwardly in a corner of a small boat cabin trying his best to keep his long limbs to himself. Sure, he was able to make friends with Yggy and Morgana, but that was one on one. Being around a group of people, all who seemed to know what they were doing, made Manish realize that he really didn’t know how to do the whole talking to people thing. Maybe he just wasn’t cut out for this?
He didn’t even want to do this boat thing in the first place but Ryan convinced him to and now he didn’t even have Ryan with him! Well, at least out with him, the Bulbasaur was tucked nicely in his pokeball. Instead, he had his awful Piplup with him; said Piplup was currently doing its best to peck at his toes.
“Will you knock it off?” Manish whispered down at the penguin who just stuck its tongue out at him and went back to the foot attack.
“Look, you don’t like me, I don’t like that you almost killed Ryan. But you’re mine so we gotta, uh, you know, like, work together? Or something? Aren’t you designed to like me?” The only response he received was a particularly hard nip to the side of his foot.
“Ow! Stop it! Look, okay, you need a name. Like, any name. So, uh, what about Mumble? Get it? Like, it’s funny ‘cause you’re a penguin and kinda weird about feet and…Stop that!” Manish was interrupted in his ramble by the newly named Mumble picking at a thread on his pants and pulling. He retaliated by scooping up the Piplup and trying to hide a grimace as Mumble bit at his fingers.
“Don’t you, you know, talk? Ryan and Dwayne both talk.” Mumble replied by sticking out his tongue again. “Great, just great. Okay, look just stay quiet…which I guess, you know, since you aren’t talking to me, just keep doing that. Yeah.”
Manish was pulled from the tiff with his Piplup by one of the other people asking if they had ever fished. Oh god, okay, this was his chance to make a good impression. He could do this. “Uh, well, um no. Not really. But sort of? I mean…uh. Well, Father had this job where he had to learn how to fly fish and he did it, but that was before I was born. But uh, sometimes he talked about it? So. Um. No, no I haven’t” Manish could feel a blush crawl across his face and several mushrooms sprouted in his hair. Great job. Real smooth. Was it too late to throw himself off the ship?
The others had started on their portion of the sandwich so Manish looked at the options he had to choose from. “I mean, uh, we want the uh, fish thing to like it right? That’s a part of fishing; using the right bait? Right?” Of the tubs in front of him Manish wasn’t a particular fan of any of them, but looking at the choices the others had made so far he figured he should put some sort of protein in there. He went to reach for the Fried Fish, but his Piplup snapped at his fingers again. “Ow! Okay, fine not that one. Let’s go with…uh, Mystery Meat? Isn’t that the stuff that they put in hot dogs? People like hot dogs. One time Father did a job and there was a hot dog cart. I don’t know a lot about it, though. I wasn’t allowed to uh watch uh…” Manish realized he was rambling again and cut himself off. Why was this so hard? He really didn't think making friends was going to be this difficult.
“Mystery Meat it is.” He said quietly, slapping the mysterious pink gelatinous feeling meat on top of the flatbread and tomato.

The steady rocking of the ship was a close comfort for Allotta. While the others may have had reservations, a lot of them from how Finnegan Fjord was looking, she was doing just fine. The smell of brine and even the worn down appearance was just a sign this guy knew what he was doing! Fisherman could scrape just about anything together to get the job done with enough work and time. They were just better like that.
"My dad's a fisherman!" Allotta tacked on to answer Big Bee's question. She had been busy looking stuff over and touching what she probably shouldn't while the others had answered. Her own reply was after manish's awkward answer, hopefully smoothing over any anxiety the guy felt. "I learned how to fish practically before I could walk! This will be super easy since I'm here."
All confidence, and showing she hadn't listened to what Ole' Blarney said at all, she picked up the Tartar Sauce and squeezed the bottle over the sandwich. It came out in a nasty gloop, squelching and splattering a bit on the counter. The other piece of flat-bread was just thrown on the top, though, further mashing the ingredients together.
"Wow! I think this is the worst looking piece of food I've ever seen!"

CYCLE 2SINK OR SWIM Slick pink Mystery Meat sits in a sea of tartar sauce and slippery tomato slices, barely held together by a far-too-small piece of dry flatbread.
Calling it a “sandwich” seems like a stretch. But Ol’ Blarney has a positive, almost rehearsed, response. "A fine piece o’bait," he grunts appreciatively, taking it in one hand with no regard for the way it drips realistically all over his fingers. "Now, t' test the waters!"
A cranking noise issues from above you as an awning opens in the ceiling. A giant fishing rod descends, its meathook-sized tip glinting in the blue light of the portholes. Ol' Blarney fits the messy sandwich over the hook, where it somehow holds its shape, preserved by video game magic.
"Down we goo..."
The bait-laden hook descends, down, down, through one of the glowing portholes in the deck and into the waters below. As it passes through, the surface becomes transparent, providing the players a window into the scene beneath their feet.
A dark shape stirs in the deep. Platter-sized eyes blink open, luminous and vast.
"Aye, that's her... she's seen it noo'..."
Two long tendrils rise up from the abyss, grasping the bait, testing its structural integrity.
There is a pause.
You see something move-- something long and flat, like the tail of a whale. A wall of bubbles glows blue right before it strikes the bottom of the boat in an onrushing wall of water. Allotta Bambooga and Finnegan Fjord will see their selection menus light up RED as manish 's lights up GREEN, while Big Bee sees his screen gray out.
The floorboards lurch beneath you and the vessel tips almost 90 degrees, throwing you instantly off your feet. Jars of peanut butter and cans of baked beans roll off the counter as the Splashmother's attack hits like a tsunami. You hear Ol' Blarney roaring orders to Grapploct as a spray of seawater blasts through the largest portal, soaking exposed loaves of bread in salty brine.
All the ingredients in the kitchen are scrambled.
"Argh, she didn't like that!" Ol' Blarney sputters, holding onto the brim of his hat. The five of you now stand on the wall of the prone vessel as water gushes in from the main deck, which is slowly angling beneath the waves. "But a fisherman's secret is perseverance, aye, and that's the truth! Another try, lads, lasses. I'm sure the ol' clipper will hold up to another little Splash, no problem!"
As he says this, a terrible splintering sound from beneath you reverberates through the hull as something breaks loose from the bottom of the vessel. A quick peek through one of the portholes shows something large and wedge-shaped drifting away from the ship. "Argh, the keel's been had! We'll never right ourselves at this rate. Er... any of you fine young folk have a Pokemon willing to swim out there and fetch 'er back for me?"

"The keel?" Big Bee said, open mouthed. "As in, the whole keel? But that's like the bottom of the boat! Okay. Okay. This is fine, we can just. Shit. Okay." He scrambled for bread on the table, but everything was mixed up.
Lettuce? Jesus. The one thing slipperier than flatbread. Onions? Where's the dame bread! He grabbed a soggy bag of whole wheat and pressed it into Allotta Bambooga 's arms. "Uh, here! You're the master baiter, so I'm entrusting you with my part of the sandwich," he said before running for the stairs.
Halfway up the stairs Big Bee was hit by a wave of brine, along with a furious Wartortle. <She rammed us and just ran away!> Taka growled, his fluffy tail thrashing the deck and sweeping up long sprays of sea water. "Yeah! And she snapped off the bottom of the boat!"
Big Bee ran for one of the portals, and he and Taka dove down into the turbid waters. He grabbed Wartortle's shell, and the Pokemon surged below the waves of the choppy seas, its Aqua Tail whipping back and forth in flat, ruddering strokes. Salt, sand, and countless macroinvertebrates washed right into Big Bee's eyes, and he fought to keep them open in the off-blue wash of the sea. He pointed at a chunk of wood drifting ahead of them. "B-leuhgh!" he said eagerly, words coming out as bubbles.
Wartortle swung towards the driftwood and surfaced in a trough between waves. Big Bee gasped for air, purely out of reflex, and swung an arm out for the keel, blinking away liters of gritty water. "Okay!" he sputtered, one arm wrapped around the wood. "I've got it!" He felt a dull CRONCH through the keel as Taka gently bit down next to him. Together the pair began to swim the broken piece back towards the boat.

"Master... hell, yeah! I'll Master Bait so hard!" Allotta laughed, kind of like how someone evil might laugh in a movie, squeezing the soggy bread to her chest. She, for the record, didn't look bothered at all by their ship possibly sinking. This was a game, so the worst that happened was they got sent back to the shore and failed the mission.
She still felt bad for Big Bee, though, and the water surrounding her feet was concerning. It was making her make uncomfortable sizzling noises sine she was a Kindler, foot vapor steaming from her shoes at the contact. So, she called out Blue, intending for the Sobble to go and help out.
Allotta took out the soggy slice Bee had offered and then grabbed the Tartar Sauce again, globbing it on the top, then slid it down the way towards whoever was next in line. She looked proud the disgusting mess they were making.
Meanwhile, Blue, thanks to Taka and Big Bee, grabbed onto the Keel and pushed it back towards the boat. He was a pokemon, and a digital program at that, so what was he supposed to do?
But, looking at it... well, it looked like the Keel just snapped in place, like some toy model. Maybe that's why it had fallen apart so easy? He pointed at his discovery and then pushed, too weak to snap it back in place on his own. Oh, the humanity!

It's just a game. It's just a game.
The boat lurches violently, tips, and Finn lets out an embarrassing yelp that's hopefully lost among the chaos. With his pain threshold set to realistic, he really feels the impact as he's thrown into the wall-that-was-now-floor, splinters digging at his palms where he'd thrown his hands out to catch himself.
Oh my god we're going to die.
Rational thought flees his mind and his only response to Ol' Blarney's plea for aid is to scramble along the wall-floor and press his back to the floor-wall and shudder. Emperor, who'd been thrown from his shoulder by the impact, looks smug.
"Go... do something useful," Finn snaps. "Help them."
The smug expression doesn't fade as his Piplup waddles over to one of the holes and dives into the water. With the combined strength of Emperor and Allotta Bambooga's Sobble, Blue, they're able to produce enough force to snap the keel back into place.
Finn doesn't feel any better.
He forces himself to his feet, shaky and irritable, and slaps more TOMATOES onto the soggy mess without a word.

Manish had to repress a cheer when he saw that he guessed the right ingredient. He wanted to celebrate, but seeing as how he was the only one who got it right he figured it would probably be in bad taste. Either way the joy was cut short by the lurch of the boat. Never one for things like balance, Manish immediately fell to the floor and looked in a daze as water started to come in. Now, the only time he ever spent on a boat was on family cruises, but he knew enough to know that the water should stay on the outside of the ship. He scrambled back to his feet.
Thankfully it seemed like the others were on top of being cool and functional and doing their best to star in their own action film. He did not think he would be able to help a lot with the whole sinking ship aspect of things. Manish glanced down at the Piplup happily splashing in the water at his feet.
“You could help you know. Go out and, uh, you know, try to stop us from sinking and potentially drowning?” Manish wasn’t totally sure he could drown in a video game, but he wasn’t too keen on finding out, either.
The Piplup’s response was to bite one of his toes, which Manish was starting to interpret as a firm ‘no.’ Looks like he was relying on the others.
But seeing as a sandwich was starting to be made he figured he could help out with that part. Now to find where that mystery meat had fallen to when the boat was hit. He dropped back down to his knees to look around. When he finally found the now soggy package he raised the meat up in victory. “Got it!”
He turned back towards the soppy sandwich just in time to see his Piplup drop fried fish on top. “But that’s not…” his sentence was cut off by the glare the Piplup sent him. “Oh okay, um, well okay.” When he bought this game he really didn’t think so much of his time was going to be spent being bullied by a penguin.

CYCLE 3THE DEEP DARK Click.
The keel snaps back into place, easy as popping an arm back onto an action figure.
[ REPAIR SUCCESSFUL! ] A popup appears for each of the players, congratulating them on their timely actions. The wooden railing groans as it tips back the opposite direction, sloshing seawater back the way it came.
Ol' Blarney sticks his head out of one of the portholes. "You've done it, lad!" he shouts encouragingly at Big Bee and the Pokemon, water streaming down his forehead. "Noo' get back in here, before she blows!"
As the boat slowly rights itself, the subject of Ol' Blarney's ambiguous statement becomes clear. It's not the ship. It's not Allotta Bambooga .
It's the SPLASHMOTHER.
The disintegrating remnants of the original sandwich seem to have disagreed with the Devourer of Depths. Bubbles trickle up from below as she belches and shudders. With the messy ingredients and substandard plating, it's clear she's on the edge of losing control.
Enter the Sandwich Mark II.
A quake ripples through the seafloor as the whole wheat touches the water, followed by a roar of pure revulsion as the smell of fried fish permeates the waves like salmon in an office microwave.
The roar continues, growing in intensity, then breaks off with a sudden gurgle.
The Splashmother chokes. Retches. And—
"Here it comes! Hold onto yer hats!"
—vomits up a shower of brilliant white stars.
{DUNGEON THEME} "Jumps so high she gobbles up the stars in the sky, legend says." They fill the depths with glittering points of light, fanning out in swirling underwater constellations. A galaxy of light and color blossoms before your eyes, expanding into great whorls and fractals that turn the sunless sea below you into a magnificent night sky.
And bursting from the ocean trench, wreathed in regurgitated starlight, comes the massive head of a GARGANTUAN MAGIKARP.
Her eyes are moons, her whiskers comet-tails. She is the size of a whale, but something about her seems even larger, as if perspective serves to hide her true, vast nature. And she sees you, small and insignificant, your worthless hands still stained with her least-favorite sandwich ingredients.
With a flip of her fins, scales reflecting stars, the Splashmother turns and swims away.
Those with Pokemon Speech enabled hear Grapploct shout <Stop her!> from the top deck. Ol' Blarney yells "We're workin' on it, ye great slimy shrimp!" and whips back around to the four of you, adjusting his hat grimly. "Ye brought those Rods, didn't ye?" he grunts. Snatching up a Fishing Rod from the closest player character, he stamps over to the set of smaller, glowing portholes in the deck you asked about before.
He fits the rod into a small hole on the side of the opening and the portal whirs suddenly to life, humming with compressed, readied energy.
"Battle stations, men. Yer Pokemon aren't out of it yet!"

The Splashmother eats their horrible sandwich. She pukes up a whole galaxy.
Allotta's eyes shine as she looks at the beautiful (and weird) sight. She feels very small. Not in that way some people got about it when they want to be nihilistic, but in a very 'One with the Universe' type of way. She thinks this moment could be very romantic if not for the pulse pumping action otherwise going on right now. And present company. She wasn't about to go on a date with three guys, an NPC, and a fish.
The atmosphere was broken by the octopus, who she also wasn't on a date with, yelled about Miss Splashmother getting away. Not on her watch! The time for sandwiches was OVER. The time for violence was NOW!
"You heard that old guy!" She pulls her Rod from her inventory, leaving it to someone else to be robbed. "Let's beat the shit out of it! Woo!"
Blue made the most sense to load into the... whatever this was. But he was also still crawling his way back onto the ship from his underwater lego journey with Big Bee, Taka, and Emperor. So, she shrugged, took out GUN, and loaded the Wurmple up.
She cackled as he sailed through the air. GUN, as always, was having a deep spiritual experience so profound he just seemed dead.

"You've done it, lad! Noo' get back in here, before she blows!"
With the keel back in place, Big Bee gripped Taka's shell and the pair surged up through an open port-hole and back into the boat, just in time for the Splashmother to disgorge her starry innards.
A thousand constellations were painted across the obsidian waves, undigestible and indelible. Schools of stars. Reefs of radiance, roiling with real light stolen from the heavens. The Splashmother was a fishy Prometheus, and she had brought the fire down from the stars to ignite the very ocean around them.
Big Bee gasped, grabbing hold of the slippery gunnel as their insubstantial vessel sloshed in the Splashmother's wake. He watches her blink, an eyelid of wet canvas sluicing seas water across a vast oval of dark, fathomless glass. He sees but a fraction of her, and she doesn't see him at all.
A single hit had shattered their keel before. A creature that size could crush them a thousand different ways, but the stench of their fried fish abomination sent her running. "After her!" Big Bee shouted. He wasn't in command of anything, but it seemed like the thing to say.
Ol' Blarney grabbed his rod, fitting it into the nearest porthole and cranking it like any seaman worth his salt. "Battle stations, men. Yer Pokemon aren't out of it yet!"
Big Bee took over, muscles burning with the strain of raising the Pokemon Cannon. The weapon telescoped out of the porthole, and he shoved it sideways, aiming the mouth at the fleeing fish. Beside him, Allotta Bambooga fired GUN out into the waves. "Let's beat the shit out of it! Woo!"
"Yeah! I've got just the girl. Rian!" Big Bee called, sending out his sweeper. The Grookey burst onto the wet deck, falling onto all fours immediately.
<Where are we?>
"Out at sea. I'm going to launch you at the Splashmother, okay? We need to catch her. Stop her swimming away."
<...> Rian looked around at the boat, which was barely holding together. <Okay, but if this ship breaks I get the sticks.>
"Done!" Big Bee called, sealing a pact he has no way of keeping. The Splashmother was turning, and his shot was becoming harder by the moment. "Get in!"
Rian jumped into the Pokemon Cannon, and with a burst of porthole blue energy Big Bee fired the monkey. She flew stick first across the ocean of stars and struck the Splashmother's scaly side, driving deep into her flank like a fuzzy green harpoon

Their quarry retches and then throws up the night sky, which is extra as fuck but also kind of neat. Finn, meanwhile, is clutching the rail of the ship with a sour expression, drenched from the water that feels all too real.
Hate this game.
As his companions seem dead-set on attacking the Splashmother, for whatever reason, Finn resigns himself to their shared fate.
"Sorry, Caiman."
He plugs the rod into one of the openings and cranks the reel. His docile Totodile seems perfectly content until he's blasted out of the cannon toward the retreating figure of the Splashmother, foaming at the mouth as he goes into a frothing RAGE.
This better be worth it. Finn hopes they can carve her up and eat her. Vengeance. Magikarp fillet.

Manish stared in awe at the scene before him. The swirling sparkle of stars, the majestic fish before them, the spiralling pixels of high-def gaming stealing his breath. The moment was broken, however, by another bite to his toes. He glares at the Piplup. Everyone else seems to be taking the battle stations and getting ready to fight and Manish sighs. “But the mystery meat…” he whispers quietly to himself. This was already bad enough with the whole ‘being on a boat’ thing, now he has to fight? He lets out another sigh. He misses making sandwiches already. Although…he does see that they are shooting their pokemon out of a cannon and he just so happens to have an awful Piplup nibbling at his feet. “Okay, time to help out the team!” he says as he scoops up the bird. It takes a moment before the Piplup realizes what’s happening and it starts trying to squirm out of Manish’s grasp. Luckily for him, he’s gotten very used to holding onto slimy Pokemon so he has a solid hold on Piplup. He pops the penguin into a cannon, gives it a pat on the head, and says, “You know how you’ve been pecking at me all day? Well, time to do it on a bigger target. Have fun!” He would probably feel bad about it later, but for the moment it was rather cathartic to send his problem Pokemon far away from him via launching it out of a cannon. With that, Manish fires the cannon. The Piplup, for its part, accepted its fate fairly quickly while flying through the air and aimed all its not very repressed rage at their target.
