This was, though they would never admit it, the tutorial Fairytale had actually deliberately avoided. Family, especially parents, was not a concept that they were particularly fond of after the experiences in their own life.
Still, they had decided that they wanted to rank up, so they had to complete at least a few tutorials. So, pushing aside their dislike of this concept, Fairytale put on their usual faux-smile and waited for the second player to arrive.
On a brighter note, Fairytale had decided they were absolutely poking holes in whatever background the game tried to give them for the fun of it.
Perhaps they could act as a changeling child might, they thought with amusement. A false replacement of the 'actual' offspring of this mother NPC.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1114138222038106173/1114206910871261274/kallisto3~jpg The first order of business was to get some goddamn shoes. Walking everywhere immediately proved itself to be a chore, and he couldn't quite fathom how the game was able to restrict him from running any faster from...whatever this pace was. It didn't even feel like he could jog! Kallisto was certainly not having it after having to trudge his way to the starting settlement, but he resolved he was going to complete these tutorials as fast as possible so he could finally start exploring more properly.
He made sure to follow the mini map, and thankfully he didn't get lost. He supposed one silver lining to this whole speed limitation was that the penguin he was given could follow him with ease. He had been prompted to give him a name, but he hadn't thought of one yet. Maybe one would come soon, or maybe he should just think of the first thing that comes to mind. At least the little one seemed very happy with himself...with walking?
❝Having fun?❞
<Oh, yes! I like walking!> the penguin replied while waving his flippers. <Better than being cooped up in the Poke Ball, I think. I also like battling. Are we going to battle soon?>
❝We'll finish some things the system wants us to do before that.❞
The penguin pouted. <But battling's the best part...>
Ignoring the whining, Kallisto breathed a sigh of relief when he finally saw the house marked on the mini map come into view. What he didn't expect, however, was that there would be someone else waiting there. A player? Yes, by the look of the username floating above his head. ❝Here for the shoes as well?❞

Fairytale tilted their head at the newcomer slightly. Their faux-cheerful smile was on their face, as usual, with a hint of darkness behind the expression. "In a way," They answer, amusement clear in their tone. They are deliberately vague and clearly shoe-less. No pokemon accompanied them, so it would be easy to mistake Fairytale for a newcomer instead of the returning player they actually are.
The other's casual tone was a sharp contrast with the formal attire he was dressed in with this game. They are about to comment on this when the scent of baked goods drifts from the house the two players are in front of revealing 'Mom' now in the doorway. "Oh, @kallisto and Fairytale ! Your fathers would be so proud if they were here today," A forlorn note is in her voice, and she shakes her head as if to clear unpleasant thoughts.
"I know you've been on this journey for a while Fairytale , but I'm so proud you for being here for your eldest brother! Such a good sibling you are! You truly are a sweet child. Speaking of... You must try some of the sweets! I originally made them for @kallisto to celebrate, but you're always welcome here, the both of you," She ushers the two in.
Fairytale's faux-cheerful grin is rather forced, having never experienced anything resembling parental support for a long time now, and quite uncomfortable with this whole matter. But, they obligingly sit at the table absolutely decked out in sweets to get this quest over with. Rather than speak as they had originally intended, they nibble at a cinnamon pastry. Maybe if they're quiet and eat this will go faster.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1114138222038106173/1114206910871261274/kallisto3~jpg Kallisto's annoyance had made him momentarily forget that he was supposed to be roleplaying, but he hadn't picked up needing to adjust until Mom came in the picture with a smell that reminded him of a bakery. So, it looked like any two players that would be paired up for this tutorial would be treated as 'family friends'. He supposed that made sense, since if he recalled correctly, a backstory would be concocted based on how they interacted with the NPC. It was a moment to test how ingenuous the AI was of the game, and so he decided he needed to put his best foot forward. For the QA part of his role, of course.
Based on how she was speaking, it seemed like this was to be Kallisto's Mom, with Fairytale 's parent somewhere else, nonexistent.
Second order of business, deny what Mom was saying to see how the AI would react. The trainer would walk into the house but not take a seat on the dining table. Instead, he remained standing and crossed his arms before shaking his head, ❝Mother, you know as well as I do that I do not indulge in sweets.❞ he had no intention of wanting to eat things in virtual reality, anyway, though he supposed he would need to cross that threshold to test how things tasted. ❝And how did you know of my arrival? It took me many years to be rid of my prison, one of which that you...❞ he let his voice trail off, wondering if the game would use this information and fill in the gaps.
<Know what? I wanna know!>
He forgot the penguin's existence momentarily and covered his face with his hand, exasperated. ❝Patience, Aegis.❞
<Aww, wait, is that my name? You named me, wow! I'm Aegis! Hello!> he was about to clamber to the table to greet the other player before Kallisto returned him to his Poke Ball. He would talk to him later. For now, Mom was still silent, with a terse expression on her face. It seemed like the game was still calculating.
❝Oh my...you have such a cute Pokemon!❞ she managed to say, ❝Won't you let it out to play for a while longer? I have sweets for Pokemon too!❞
❝You haven't answered the question.❞
❝O-oh...❞
Kallisto narrowed his eyes. Was that a stutter or the faintest sound of an audio distortion? Was he imagining things?
And then Mom smiled again. ❝It was my mistake, I made the sweets, thinking you were Fairytale 's elder brother. Oh, you two were so close back when you were kids, especially when their brother started to get busier and busier with their work...❞

As the other player got more into his persona and was clearly intent on poking at the NPC either accidentally or purposefully, Fairytale’s usual faux-cheer stopped feeling as forced. It seemed the other player had either missed or ignored the memo that ‘Mom’ was literally everyone’s mother here in UNOVR.
The green-haired Gardener took on a confused expression, staring at ‘Mom’ with a worried air. ”Mother… Are you feeling alright? I do not have any brothers. I am an only child. I always have been.” This was not a lie in the real world, but here, with the two of them addressing ‘Mom’ as both their mothers while proclaiming no relation to each other… Well, they were looking forward to what this ‘Mom’ thought of that.
‘Mom’ paused, and for a moment there was the slightest sound of static. Not simply within the NPC’s mind, but externally as well. Fairytale’s smile was innocently concerned as they waited for her response.
”Oh, you’ve got a strange sense of humor, Fairytale ! Of course you are my child…. YOu aLL ArE…” Her voice was distorted on the last line. That definitely sounded like a glitch in the making. Even ‘Mom’s’ appearance seemed to warp briefly.
Fairytale met the other player’s gaze, a challenge in their eyes. Which one of them could break the NPC first?
”My children, so cruel to me! Your fathers would never have condoned such behavior!! And to think… I had gifts for you both…” She seemed to be attempting to go back to the script.
Maybe the other player would take the easy exit of the offered shoes. It would be disappointing, but it was entirely possible.
Or maybe they could have some fun.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1114138222038106173/1114206910871261274/kallisto3~jpg Kallisto found it interesting that the other player quickly knew what he was doing and was also joining along. His appearance did not mean that he was naive, at least, but a person could easily change their appearance in his game; he needed to remind himself of that constantly. He hadn't expected though to refer to the NPC as Mom either, unless it was really meant to act as a mother figure even with two players. It would've been easier for it to just assume that they were related, but since the backstory already established that they weren't, well, it seemed it was generating some conflict.
He observed as the NPC thought. Kallisto thought he heard a crackle. This was...too easy, and not in a way that made him excited. In fact, it concerned him that what appeared to be a bug can be so easily generated, on the first tutorial quest as well, of all things. Or was this one of those 'features' that he was informed about?
While he didn't physically recoil, the man couldn't help but twitch his mouth when he saw the distortion. He glanced at the other player, only for them to look rather smug. Was it his turn to push its buttons? Was this like a turn-based battle to see who could glitch out the NPC first?
He kind of wanted the shoes, but...hm...he supposed that fostering connections with other players had greater value.
Alright, I did start this game.
He glanced at the cream on top of a cake that sat on the table. Without warning, he scooped up some in his gloved hand (gross, washing it later), and faced Mom.
❝Father would like you to have this.❞
And then he chucked the large dollop of cream at her face. [Glitch]4KlA5hcB1d1001d100

An inelegant snort left their noise as the other player dropped his dignified persona and unexpectedly threw the bit of pastry-cream at the NPC's face. It was not Fairytale's usual sense of humor, but it had simply been so abrupt.
It was quite odd to notice the the bonsai tree in the corner start glowing. To be honest, in all their time playing, Fairytale could not really remember encountering bugs such as this. Perhaps the tutorials, particularly the backstory one, were particularly buggy. After all, they had to be done with two players working together. It was hard to string together a backstory if another's backstory contradicted.
Or maybe players tended to cooperate with the NPC. In any case, 'Mom' currently had an expression like what Fairytale imagined a GPS might have while recalculating. "...How... thoughtful... The voice was slow when she finally spoke, face still covered. Fairytale hid a laugh behind their hand.
"My... children... are so thoughtful," It was slow, yes, but not in a glitched way anymore, that was clear. It was the voice a person pushed to the limits of patience.
"I should retrieve my gifts for them, so they can leave," She smiled, but it turned into a scowl as she went to walk away.
They heard her mutter as she walked away to retrieve the shoes in all likelihood, "Truly atrocious manners, just like their fathers..."
Fairytale laughed harder, and then once composed, they turned to the other player in the meantime. "So, I must ask... Are you a new player, or a more experienced one that skipped the tutorials, my brother slash best friend slash whatever story was attempted to be made up?" They grinned.
After all that had happened, they were in an unexpectedly good mood from doing this tutorial, so they generously gave their own answer. "I have been playing since around the Noonlight Raid, though I took a break for a time. But now I am all back and ready to play~!" Their tone was rather amused and delighted by everything.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1114138222038106173/1114206910871261274/kallisto3~jpg It was because he couldn't think of anything else to say. And the distorted face bugged him. Better a face full of frosting than a mouth or eye misaligned. He hadn't intended it to be funny, but the other player beside him snorted anyway. Well, it was an incredulous situation, and sometimes he forgot he was wearing Alexander's skin. Was this the action of Remmiel or of Kallisto? Hmmm. He still needed to better calibrate himself to what he imagined he would be like.
Oh but, weirdly enough, the action seemed to cause a graphic bug with one of the decorative trees. He had no idea how that was related, but maybe it was Mom's wrath being inflicted on the poor thing. No matter, the bonsai soon corrected itself and it was back to being a regular old tree, no inner radiation present. ❝I did think hard about what to do next.❞ he replied, even if he knew the question to be rhetorical (and also that he didn't really think hard at all).
With his free hand he pulled off the glove inside out so that the cream was kept isolated. He wondered if he could use the sink in the house to wash it, though it seemed odd to overstay his welcome. Looked like Mom had fixed herself too. The backstory seemed to end up as: my children are fucking gremlins.
Good enough. The bugs receded as quickly as they came, and they were still able to complete the tutorial. Mission accomplished? At least someone was having fun here, Kallisto thought, though he couldn't deny that hurling a dollop of cream like a child felt exhilarating in its own way. And the action spurred camaraderie, which was the other goal he had in mind for today. ❝New, and we seem to be...siblings turned estranged. I suppose that makes you my step-sibling.❞ he couldn't figure out their gender at first glance, so gender neutral it was.
He had no idea what Fairytale was referring to though. He hadn't looked that far into the game. ❝A raid sounds interesting, I hope to be able to participate once I am better equipped.❞ he glanced at his shoeless feet. ❝Truth be told, I was expecting something along the lines of NPCs clipping rather than distorted audio. Feels too intentional.❞ maybe Pokemon was finally taking its first steps into horror, which would be pretty novel.
Kallisto heard the heavy footsteps of Mom returning, but what he didn't expect were a pair of boots to be flung at his face. The boots he customized at the start of the game! He thought, before slumping a little from the pain of having literal shoes thrown at him. Right, realistic pain setting. In the UI, it looked like he sustained no damage since this wasn't a battle, but ouch. Fairytale's, on the other hand, were thrown at their feet.
❝Get out before I make you.❞
So much for kind and thoughtful Mom.

"It is my pleasure to welcome you to UNOVR in that case, step-brother~!" Fairytale cheerfully proclaimed, playfulness in their gaze.
At the comment regarding distorted audio, Fairytale's expression faded into something more serious. For someone who had been so cheerful moments ago or at least seemed that way, their new expression was icy. "You will find a lot more distorted audio depending on where you go, most of it is usually intentional, unlike what this probably was. Corruption is a strong theme of this game, after all."
They paused briefly. "...Following similar lines, I would recommend you stay away from Mistra, despite the story quest currently currently regarding collecting corruption. It is..." Fairytale trails off and shakes their head, a distant look in their gaze. Whether this new player takes their advice is up to him, but they have done what they can now.
'Reality' returns with a sudden thud of shoes hitting their new step-brother's face. Fairytale hides their amused expression behind their hand until they can control it, and then they cheerfully collect their own shoes. Luckily, they do not have to put them on physically to have their effect.
It would ruin their aesthetic otherwise, after all.
"It was nice to meet you! Congrats on the shoes~!" Fairytale cheerfully says, unable to resist poking a bit of fun. "Maybe I will see you around~!" And with that, Fairytale makes to exit.

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1114138222038106173/1114206910871261274/kallisto3~jpg Corruption is a strong theme in the game, after all.
It was? That was news to him, actually. Then again, many horror games started out this way, parading like they were just cute, harmless things on the outside, only to let something slip between the cracks, beckoning the player to explore and pry it open until it consumes them. Well, that was what the company wanted from Kallisto, or at least he assumed so. ❝I'll keep your advice in mind.❞
For a moment, he thought that Fairytale sounded like an NPC. Stay away from somewhere? All the more it must've held something that people were seeking. The way he spoke after all implied that he had been there himself, but whatever it was, he might've failed the attempt, or maybe the experience was not worth it.
But anyway, returning the matter of getting shoes thrown at his face: Kallisto took a few moments to regain his composure before picking up the shoes that fell unceremoniously to the floor. The item was added in his inventory almost immediately, and then right after, his feet felt like they were in something more comfortable than just cold wood. Ah, auto-equip? Weird, but convenient. His face still stung.
The other player made a swift exit, following Mom's advice. Kallisto couldn't help but groan and massage the bridge of his nose. ❝Apologies, Mother, perhaps we can meet in more amicable circumstances next time.❞ though it might be for the best that he would steer clear from the house from now on. He then left the building as well, and with Fairytale already long gone, he decided to send a friend request to keep in touch, just in case.
It was better to have friends in the face of corruption.
Inside the house, Mom's features would quickly soften to her default settings, but she would stare at the door for some time. All was quiet.
