He woke up to a crying penguin in the middle of the woods.
<Hic...I was so worried! I kept running and running, just like you told me, and then it got so dark! And then, and then..!> they were out, just like that. In Asper, as the game said. Kallisto didn't want to worry his partner, but he had to admit that the more seconds passed, the more his memory of what exactly happened in Mistra became hazy. Trying to recall made his mind conjure flashes of imagery, sharp and painful like broken glass. And before he lost consciousness, the reflection in the lake...
He shuddered and hugged the penguin tighter, but he took care not to embrace him too tightly. Fairytale was right, he should've never gone to that place. What was he thinking..?
<Brrr...Master, was your body always this cold?>
❝What?❞ so he wasn't just imagining it? No, that buzz still hadn't gone away, and if he chose to focus on it, closing his eyes...C̴̲̿̿̀͊ở̵͇͎͉̼̥͊̅͂̔̿͑̚m̸͍̣̟̋͛̔̕e̷̢̧̩̻̙̣͖͛̑̍̃̀̓̎̒̂̿͑͘̚͠
He suddenly pushed Aegis away, letting the poor Pokemon fall on the ground. It was only then he realized that the grass surrounding him had already begun to wilt; its colors changing from vibrant green to a dull yellow.
<Ouch! Master, what was that--Master?>
He had already stood up, holding Aegis' Poke Ball and opening the UI to log out. ❝Sorry, Aegis, I...need to step out for a while. I'll be back soon.❞
<Huh? Wait--!>...
Remmiel's grip on the porcelain sink turned his knuckles white. He stared at his reflection in the mirror, trembling.
He wasn't melting, he wasn't melting, he wasn't melting. It was just a game, just a game, just a game.
The whole thing was stupid, he realized. He had pushed it away, forgotten about it, denied it, but truth to be told, he was never quite good at figuring out who he was in a sea of pretending, of changing faces and voices and opinions. He thought he put that all behind him, for high school were the worst years of his life, which was why he made sure to pick a course that no one amongst his peers would pick, just to make sure, just to get away...
He splashed water on his face. Let it drip off his skin. Something was clearly wrong when he spawned again in Asper. What did the weird scientist say? Mostly, one was gambling whether the Pokemon would be able to obtain a "sample" or not. He had no clue what this sample was supposed to be. There were other possible things that could happen, though...and since Aegis came out of it without any notable injuries, did something happen...to him?
Just thinking about going back to UNOVR in Alexander's skin unnerved him to no end. It was already something he grew uncomfortable with over time, but now...
He wiped his face with a towel and went back out to his little living space. Rubbing his face with his hand, he sat down in front of his laptop and searched up about cosmetic changes in UNOVR, though he had a feeling it would be a surprise expenditure. He sighed, thinking that he really could just stop playing, but he was annoyed to think that he did grow fond of Aegis, and he did promise...
