 QUEST LINE 2: GLOBAL SWARMING
POPULATION EXPLOSION ON BETA ISLANDA notification pops up on your UI: A video message from Professor Ash. "Hello, trainer. I trust your simple collection mission is going well. After all, it's barely been..." she makes a show of checking her slim watch, "...two weeks."
She sighs, the type of practiced and needlessly dramatic sigh of someone used to working with colleagues who blast through deadlines. "Anyway, let me add to what I can only assume is your vast laundry list of crucial tasks." The image switches to a topographical map of Beta Island, which shows the coast, rainforest, and central volcano in a series of cyan outlines. "My biomass monitoring shows a vast increase in island spawns. Something must have destabilized the ecosystem, and now certain Pokemon are breeding rapidly to fill the developing niches."
Ash realizes what she's said and paraphrases for your benefit. "The Pokemon are swarming. Defeating and catching them should settle the population for now, but we need to find out what has thrown off the balance. Investigate and get back to me." The video ends.

Big Bee checked to make sure the recording of Professor Ash had finished playing. He closed his UI just in case. "We have been busy," Big Bee grumbled. Swiping up in the air with two fingers, Big Bee opened his inventory and checked out his growing collection of Pokemon. Taka and Rian were powerhouses, and then there were the newcomers: Fennekin, Litten, and his brand new Clobbopus. Time for some battling experience, he thought.
He swiped over to the map. There was a large, blipping ring on the coastline. The Swarm. He flicked over to his friends list and sent a quick message to Allotta Bambooga. Nice text.
He tapped on the map, bringing up the fast travel system, and a second later he materialized on the crunchy, golden sands of Beta Beach. It didn't take long to find the trail of the swarm. The sand along the coastline had been churned up. Dunes were broken, grass was torn and chewed, and a stampede of footsteps left the whole beachfront a dappled mess.
"We're on the right track," Big Bee said to Taka. He pulled up his UI and checked to see if there was a new UI prompt. Nothing. He pulled up his minimap. There was right in the middle of the large ring. "They're somewhere nearby. Now where's Allotta?" |

"Allotta's not coming."You could hear the leer in her voice before you even saw her. Bergamot Gristleborg, the virtual villain, the witch of wideo games, slid out from behind a conveniently placed sand-snowman. There was sand caked on her palms and beneath her fingernails, as if she'd been hard at work constructing something (maybe a sand-snowman to hide behind?) Her high heels sunk into the sand as she crossed the stretch of beach towards Big Bee , gesturing leisurely down the Coastline. "I suppose you're here to catch more Magikarp," she said presumptuously, gesturing towards the sea. "You'd better keep away from the Swarm. I've been tracking it."There was no proof of this, and in fact, Bergamot seemed barely conscious of the battered trail of footprints and torn grass that were the clear signs of the Swarm's passage. "Oh, I was kidding about Allotta. She's probably on her way." The young woman narrowed her eyes. "But she has no idea what she's getting into. The Swarm... it's like nothing you've ever seen." She seemed to gloat over the words, relishing the danger. Without taking her eyes off Big Bee, Bergamot pulled up her UI and placed a PUBLIC QUEST MARKER on their current location. It blinked distractingly on her minimap, as it would for any other players in the area. If the Swarm was half as dangerous as she was pretending, they'd need all the help they could get.

Manish was casually minding his own business, nodding along whenever Lucy slowed down enough in her ramblings to make sure he was still listening when there was a ping on his little communicator. He pulled out the device and squinted. Huh, there was a giant marker on the map near him.
Lucy scampered up his leg and onto his shoulder to look. <Ohhh what do you think that is? Do you think it’s a fight? I bet it’s a fight. Can we go fight? It’s really close by. Like, really really close by.>
Manish wrinkled his nose, he didn’t really like the idea of going into something blind. He was pulled from his thoughts, though, from a loud chattering behind him. Manish turned and stared at what looked like a wave of pokemon coming near him. Without thinking he gripped Lucy to his chest and took off running towards where he thought the mark on his map was.
It didn’t take long till he saw a couple familiar faces. “Morgana!” Manish wheezed as he darted towards his friend. “Help!” He darted behind the smaller girl’s body and took a moment to suck in air. He straightened up and gave an awkward wave at Big Bee, “Hi…Um, help?” said again pointing at the swarm of Mudkip.
Lucy took this moment to leap out of Manish’s arm and square up with a nearby Mudkip. <Oh, you wanna go? You wanna go? Let’s go! Manish, game face on!>
It was then that it really set in that Manish was around people. Sure he was already friends with Morgana, she’s even the one who sent the request so they were practically BFFs. Big Bee, though, Manish really wanted to impress him. That might get the other player to be his friend as well! He stood up straight and pretended like his knees weren’t shaking.
“Right, um, let’s uh, do a Quick Attack?” Manish shot a glance over to Big Bee to see if he was watching.
Lucy for her part immediately dashed forward to land the hit on the nearest Mudkip.

Morgana was right. Big Bee had never seen a swarm like this. He hadn't seen a swarm of Mudkip, or any Pokemon really, aside from the tide of Magikarp. Come to think of it, that experience was quite comparable, so maybe Morgana was actually full of shit after all.
So not only was the swarm very similar to something he'd seen before, but the man fleeing them also looked quite familiar. "Manish! Hey man, what's up?" Big Bee asked, returning Manish's shy wave with massively amped enthusiasm. "Help? You got it! Taka!"
Big Bee looked over to see Taka tensing his jaw in anticipation, the massive muscles bulging like tennis balls just behind his cheeks. "Go! Bite attack!"
<No.>
"Why not?"
<Too far.>
The chattering swarm bore down on them, surging and kipping. Forty-one rounded fins cut along the beach in a tumult of adorable, vacant eyes, and pointy orange cheek pads.
"Now!"
<No.>
The Mudkip surged, a living wave of open mouths and flapping tails. One of them fell backwards with an adorable scream.
Big Bee took a step back, his knees turning to Jellicent as the swarm began to crash down on him. "Now?!"
<Yeah.>
Taka kicked off the sand, swinging his tail in a rough arc that cut the wave in half, spilling the yipping and squeaking Mudkip across the beach. He landed, teeth bared, and bit the neared one. It made a sound like a Houndour's chew toy.

Morgana had already passed through the Five Stages of Hilarity upon seeing Manish running towards them with 51 Mudkip on his heels. Now she had moved into Acceptance. "You've done well, my loyal pawn!" she called to manish , laughing smugly behind her hand as the man scrambled behind her for safety. Bergamot was confident she could protect him-- protect all of them! But she was not here to help people, really, she was here to cause unimaginable mental anguish and suffering. "You know, I could just float away on Guillotine," Morgana said pseudo-threateningly, pretending to swirl a glass of wine. The Piplup she was referring to peeked out from behind Manish, eyes narrowed. "What will you people give me if I decide to assist? Your wealth? Your credit card details? Or perhaps a Pokemon will do."Not giving Manish or Big Bee a choice in the matter, Bergamot pointed towards a troupe of Mudkip who had tumbled away from the main group and were yipping and kipping, preparing to launch their mass attack. "Guillotine, Bubblebeam!" she commanded, lifting the little penguin up like she was a plush stuffed sniper rifle and she! Bergamot Riddle! was the sniper. Bubbles fired out from her living penguin bazooka, missing every target with tantalizing ineptitude. The Mudkip proceeded to flow up and over her still-laughing form, burying her beneath their squishy blue bodies. |

"GUN! Tackle!"
There is a 'hrk' as Allotta flings the Wurmple as hard as she can into the crowd of Mudkip that were swarming all over some girl she didn't know (Bergamot Gristleborg). Maybe her precious bug friend would help relieve some of the... whatever was happening here.
Kind of looked like a circus full of clowns.
"Hey, Bee!" Ignoring the ankle biters, Allotta kicked and stomped her way towards Big Bee. It was only when she was nearby she noticed manish, giving him a wave as she passed by. "And the mushroom guy from the tower of rats! Hey!"
Turning around to look, Allotta wrinkled her nose at the flood of Mudkip lingering around.
"Why are there so many of these things? Do they not have birth control here?"
Oblivious to simple game mechanics, as always. That Tutorial Box had been closed before it even had a chance to do it's job. |

Manish chuckled at what he was hoping were empty threats from Morgana and gave another shy wave at Big Bee. He was already planning on maybe sending Big Bee a friend request, maybe, possibly, if he could work up the nerve. After all, they had interacted a few times now and he always seemed friendly. But those thoughts would have to wait as Guillotine missed every attack and the swarm came closer.
Not really wanting to be that close to the Mudkip, Manish scampered further backwards until he saw a new familiar face. He wasn’t sure of her name, but she did remember him, which he figured was good enough, even if it was just as mushroom man. He really didn’t feel like being picky as to who he was going to use as a human shield.
“Um, hi, it’s uh, nice to see you again” he quickly said as he moved himself behind Allotta and peeked around her to watch GUN do some serious damage. “Woah. Dang. That’s uh, that’s a cool, um, yeah.” His eyes wandered through the remaining few Mudkip to spot Lucy who was hissing at a nearby Mudkip.
“Okay, um, yeah, Lucy! Use Energy Ball!”
Lucy gave a nod and held her little lizard hands close together as she summoned up the energy around her, ready to blast it out to all the Mudkip near her.
Right as she was about to release the Energy Ball at the remaining Mudkip, one tackled her from the side causing her to fire directly into the air, completely missing everything. <Come on! That's not fair! I wanna do over!> she pouted.

Big Bee waved back at Manish. He wanted to go and talk to him, but he was clearly busy being accosted by that strange woman. He's a good guy, I should send him a friend request! Big Bee was about to bring up his HUD when Allotta Bambooga stomped over to him complaining about the swarms.
"Yeah! The quest said that by catching so many of the other Pokemon we'd thrown off the natural balance and they were breeding out of control."
Meanwhile, Taka was still chomping through the Mudkip swarm, just chowing down on the little bobble-headed idiots like he was a Hungry Hungry Hippowdon and they were little more than wet, salty marbles. |

Morgana sat up like a child popping out of a McDonalds ballpit, sending dead Mudkip models flying in all directions. " Ha-ha!" she said to save face, brushing Mudkip off her shoulders. Secretly, she was annoyed that Allotta Bambooga had rescued her so effectively. She was supposed to be a villain, not a damsel in distress. Surely there was a way she could twist this situation. "You fools! You've done my work for me, far better than I ever could!" she said, throwing back her head triumphantly as she pulled up her Catch screen. "The Mudkip... manish appearing at just the right moment... Allotta Bambooga... it was all a part of my plan." She radiated smug confidence as she tossed a Pokeball at one of the Mudkip that hadn't been explicitly killed, sucking it inside the ball. "That's one Mudkip the rest of you won't be catching."A white-gloved hand pulled up her menu and selected something invisible from her side of the screen. Beads of light began collecting around her feet as the game prepared to log her out. "Adieu!" The Coastline vista vanished as Morgana logged out. She told herself it was for dramatic effect, but honestly, she just wasn't sure how to make a graceful exit while covered in Mudkip goo. |

QUEST COMPLETE!
"Nice work, trainers." Professor Ash's voice emanates from your UI as another video message loads on-screen. "My sensors are reading that the swarm has been neutralized successfully."
The quest marker you had been standing on spins once in place before disappearing in a shower of pixels, leaving only two remaining on your minimap. "Take your findings to Dr. Bunya, I'm sure she'll be as pleased as I am. Keep up the good work."
The video message ends, the Professor's serious tone clashing with the peal of congratulatory music that plays. You defeated a whole Mudkip swarm! It's time to celebrate!
